Head Football Coach Casey Selfridge’s mantra for his players is simple: process over product. He has made his philosophy very clear since coming to Greenhill in the fall. Just look at the pinned tweet on the twitter account, @CoachSelfridge. It reads like this: “Process > Product, Process > Product, Process > Product, Process > Product, Process > Product, Process > Product, Process > Product.” Coach Selfridge’s coaching philosophy of “process over product” is simple. He wants his players to focus on the journey to the prize, not the end result. “When I first came [to Greenhill], I asked the kids their goals and the answer was to win an SPC title,” he said. “That sounds great but if the kids and the program don’t understand what it takes to achieve those goals, then they’re just
empty goals,” Coach Selfridge said. Coach Selfridge has taken over Greenhill’s football team in a much different spot than he did in his previous head coaching job. Coach Selfridge spent the last six seasons as the Head Coach of Lakeside School in Seattle. In his first year there, he took over a Lakeside team coming off a 2-8 season, and quickly got the team to their first state playoffs in over 14 years. His teams at Lakeside set eight overall team records and 27 individual school records. Last season under Tom Williams, Greenhill football finished with an 8-2 overall record (6-2 in SPC 3A), which was the team’s first winning campaign in 15 years. Highlights from last season include the Hornets 42-27 victory at St. Marks in the first game of the season, Greenhill’s first win over their archrival in 13 years. The team returns last year’s top two leading receivers, seniors Xavier Bryant and Kassidy Woods, but is without thier starting quarterback and running back

from last season. “I came in and saw that they were 8-2 [last season], they had some really special kids, and that everything was on the upswing. It made me kind of pause for a second and say ‘ok. what am I going to add to this,’” said Coach Selfridge. cont’d on page 17

Greenhill held a mandatory anti-racism training session for all school faculty in August prior to the beginning of the school year. The school’s six-person Equity and Inclusion team worked together to organize the training session. The Equity and Inclusion team is made up of faculty who work to ensure Greenhill is an inclusive environment for everyone.
The training was conducted by an organization called Border Crossers. According to their website, Border Crossers’ mission is to “train and empower educators to dismantle patterns of racism and injustice in schools and communities.” As part of the training, faculty members from all departments were split into four groups, each led by three to four facilitators from Border Crossers. The day began with an activity where everyone introduced themselves and shared one word that encapsulated their feelings on the

upcoming training. The facilitators gave a basic foundation of the idea of race, different types of racism, and racial identity to their faculty groups. Once the training commenced, a series of discussions were held on the history of racism. The discussions focused predominately around racism in America. This laid a basic framework for the second portion of the training.
