COMETS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK FROM DISAPPOINTING 2010 SEASON The Olivet College softball team finished the 2010 season with a 14-18 overall record, including a 6-10 mark against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponents. In 2011, the Comets hope to bounce back and finish with a winning record.
PITCHERS Senior Katie Harper (Vassar) returns for her final season in the red and white. She has started 52 games in her first three seasons at Olivet and has posted a 31-21 record to go along with a 2.93 ERA. Harper has struck out 238 batters and walked only 99 in 347 innings. Juniors Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) and Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) add depth in the circle. During her freshman campaign, Cook had an 11-7 record. Greene, who transferred to Olivet prior to last season from Eastern Michigan University, started 12 games and finished the year with a 5-8 record. Sophomore Breanne Harmon (Quincy) had a solid rookie season. In 30 innings pitched, she struck out 32 batters and walked only 11.
CATCHERS Senior Christine Daub (Hudson) started every game last year behind the plate in her first season at Olivet. She was ranked four on the team with a .323 batting average and made just one error in 173 total chances for a single-season school record .994 fielding percentage. Freshmen Courtney Klinger (Jackson/Northwest) and Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) are also going to have chances behind the plate in games.
OUTFIELDERS Senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) returns for her final season in the red and white and is likely to get the starting job in centerfield for a second straight year. In her career, she has played in 83 games and is hitting .264, while scoring 42 runs and stealing 37-of-40 bases. Junior Nicole Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Valley) along with sophomores Breanna Bunker (Charlotte) and Ciara
2
Santos (Lansing/Everett) all contributed in the outfield last season and are going to get opportunities this spring. Batting from the left side of the plate as a slap hitter last year, Wernette was third on the team with a .333 batting average. In their first season at Olivet, Bunker and Santos played in 25 and 20 games, respectively. Santos batted .311 and drove in nine runs. Also looking to contribute in 2011 will be freshmen Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville).
INFIELDERS When she’s not in the circle, Greene will start at a corner infield position. For her efforts, she was a 2010 second-team All-MIAA selection. Senior Kate Boss (Charlotte/Maple Valley) and sophomore Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) are two other returning infielders. Last year, Boss started five games at second base, while Maas started two at first base and seven games each at shortstop and third base. Junior Bridget Lathers (Grass Lake/Lumen Christi) is able to play this season after sitting out last year. She came to Olivet after playing two seasons at Jackson Community College. Junior Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine) spent her first two collegiate seasons of softball at Lake Michigan College. Lenard is a versatile player who also has strong potential to be the starting first baseman. Sophomores Ali Lund (Owosso) and Ashley Mallo (Constantine) saw the majority of their playing time on the junior varsity team last spring. These two, along with freshman Sarah Mecham (Eaton Rapids), are going to battle for playing time this year.
SCHEDULE For the seventh straight year, Olivet will start its season by playing 12 games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Over the last six years, the Comets have compiled a 4420 record in Florida. Olivet will then play four non-conference doubleheaders before hosting Hope College April 7 for its first MIAA doubleheader.
