COMET BASEBALL WORKING HARD FOR A HIGHER MIAA FINISH IN 2011 The Olivet College baseball team posted a 10-30 record during the 2010 season. The Comets are optimistic that they have the players who can turn it around and finish the 2011 season with a winning mark. Head Coach Ted Mahan is hopeful because 20 of 27 players on the roster had a 3.0 or higher grade point average during the fall semester. “In my coaching career, the student-athletes who have done well in the classroom have done a great job with carrying the same work ethic over to the baseball diamond,” said Mahan. “They have a great understanding about what it takes to be successful in both areas.” PITCHERS The success of the 2011 season will be determined on the success of the pitching staff, particularly the starters. Leading this group is senior captain Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak). Over his first three seasons, he has posted an 8-13 record and 5.64 ERA in 162.2 innings. Sophomore Jay Magro (Bridgman) is another returning pitcher, who started nine games during his rookie season. Olivet also gets a boost in the starting rotation with the return of junior Sean Alexander (Fenton) and sophomores Nick McCleary (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and Justin Pitt (Imlay City). All three did not pitch during the 2010 season for various reasons. Junior Lee Cline (Mt. Morris) transferred to Olivet from Mott Community College and is also going to be in the mix for starts. Alexander was 3-3 with a 4.96 ERA, including a no-hitter against Kalamazoo College, during the 2009 season. McCleary made seven appearances on the mound in 2009 and was the winning pitcher in Olivet’s win over NCAA Division I University of Toledo (Ohio). Pitt saw action in six games, including four starts, during his freshman campaign. Senior Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) and juniors Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly), Adam Ruhle (Royal Oak/Shrine Catholic) and Ben Steffler (Lapeer/West) have all pitched in relief in the past and are expected to have a similar role this spring. The freshmen trio of Jake Ball (Cadillac), Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/ Avondale) and Chris Watkins (Grand Junction/Bangor) are also going to get chances to pitch. INFIELDERS The Comets welcome back five letterwinners to the infield, led by senior captains Beau Felix (Hartland) and Ben Kosmalski (Canton/ Plymouth). Felix had a breakout season last year, as he was second on the team with a .395 batting average to go along with 44 hits, 26 runs scored, five home runs and .631 slugging percentage. Playing
2
first base, Felix made only six errors in 229 chances for a .974 fielding percentage. Kosmalski started every game at second base, posting a .361 batting average and ranking second on the team with 52 base hits and 12 doubles. Sophomore Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) returns to the infield and is likely to be the starting shortstop after hitting .242 during his first season at Olivet. Other returning infielders are j u n i o r s A u s t i n C l a r k ( O s s i n e k e / A l p e n a ) a n d Ty l e r O l i n s k e (Neguanee). Clark split time between first base and catcher last season, while Olinske started 18 games at third base. Freshmen Chase Carter (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Catholic) and Chris Dael (Sterling Heights/University of Detroit Jesuit) had great high school careers and are also in the mix for playing time in the infield. OUTFIELDERS LaFramboise and senior Jimmy Keenan (Charlotte) return with the most playing time in the outfield. LaFramboise started 21 games in left field last year, and Keenan started the other 19 games. Keenan also made four starts in right field. Also look for senior Phil Sullens (Belleville) to be a starter in the outfield. Freshmen Andrew Engle (Greenville), Matt Newby (Lansing/ Eastern), Peters, Pat Russell (Almont) and Jonny Zawacki (Alpena) add depth in the outfield. CATCHERS Clark made 13 starts behind the plate last year and enters the season as the starter. Olinske is a solid backup, while Dael is a versatile first-year player who could also start. SCHEDULE Olivet will travel to Fort Myers, Fla., March 6-14, to open its season at the Gene Cusic Classic. While there, the Comets will play eight nine-inning games against eight different schools. One of the games is against Heidelberg (Ohio) University, who is ranked No. 1 in the preseason d3baseball.com poll. Upon returning home to Michigan, Olivet will play a nonconference game against Rochester College March 23. The Comets then open MIAA play at Hope College March 26. Olivet will play a home and away doubleheader against each of the seven other MIAA schools. Other non-conference games on the schedule are a doubleheader at Oakland University April 19 and a nine-inning game at Aquinas College April 27.
