A Message From Dwight & Mandy

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Oklahoma Zoological Society achieved record growth in 2023!

From habitat expansions and diversification of our gardens to a baby boom and introduction of new species, growth is everywhere you look at the Zoo.

Over the past year, we have achieved significant milestones in our mission to connect people with our world’s vanishing wildlife and wild places to inspire conservation action. We provide a safe and nurturing environment for our diverse range of animal residents, monitor Oklahoma’s pollinator population, and enhance the gardens that beautify our grounds.

Conservation is a pillar of our work, and we are thrilled to play a part in stabilizing populations of endangered and critically endangered species. This past year we welcomed twin Sumatran tiger cubs, a male okapi, three Santa Catalina Island rattlesnakes, a female chimpanzee, and four African lion cubs – the first in 15 years! Our caretaker teams work hard to ensure that the animals living in our care receive expert veterinary care, plenty of enrichment activities, and the opportunity to exercise choice and control in daily life.

Expedition Africa, presented by Inasmuch Foundation, will have its grand opening in Spring 2024. This nearly 13-acre expansion is the largest construction project at the Zoo in 100 years. Pathways and some exhibits are already enjoyed by our guests with additional animals frequently moving to their new homes.

Love’s Pachyderm has been reimagined into a dual event and exhibit space while keeping historical aspects that make this building so beloved by the Oklahoma City community. If you haven’t already, please visit and immerse yourself in all the wonders the beautiful continent of Africa has to offer right here in your backyard!

On behalf of the OKC Zoo community, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your commitment to our cause. Your contributions have made a significant impact on the growth and success of your OKC Zoo. We look forward to your continued support as we strive to provide an even better experience for our valued visitors and animal residents.

Gratefully,

Dwight Lawson, Oklahoma City Zoo Executive Director & CEO

Mandy Heaps, Oklahoma Zoological Society Executive Director

Conservation at the Zoo

Conservation is central to the OKC Zoo’s mission, but it will take all of us to preserve and protect the world’s vanishing wildlife and wild places. You make a difference by donating to the Zoo’s Round Up for Conservation program when making purchases in the park. Together, we can combat climate change, reduce pollution, and save our planet’s diverse plants and animals.

Baby Boom

• The OKC Zoo participates in Species Survival Plan® (SSP) programs in accordance with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

• An AZA SSP Program develops a breeding and transfer plan that identifies population goals and recommendations to manage a genetically diverse, demographically varied, and biologically sound population.

• Success is achieved when SSP animals can meet program goals and come from biologically sound populations because of a shared commitment to cooperative populations and program management.

Your Zoo celebrated 42 births and hatchlings during the past fiscal year.

Celebrating 20 years

In February 2023, grizzly bear brothers, Will and Wiley, turned 20 years old. Rescued from the Alaskan wilderness after their mother was killed, Will and Wiley were approximately five months old when they arrived at the OKC Zoo in 2003.

As part of the OKC Zoo’s Operation Bear Care campaign created to share Will and Wiley’s story, Southwest Airlines transported the cubs on a commercial flight from Alaska to their forever home at the OKC Zoo. We also hosted a public naming contest for the bears with thousands voting to name them after iconic Oklahomans, Will Rogers and Wiley Post.

Will and Wiley were among the first animals to relocate to Oklahoma Trails when it opened in 2007, making this a popular destination among Zoo guests over the years.

OKC Zoo Initiatives

Zoo Conservation Programs Implemented

Painted Dog Research Trust

The African Painted Dog is listed as endangered due to habitat loss and human conflict. The animals are also vulnerable to vehicle collisions. The OKC Zoo supports Painted Dog Research Trust’s (PDRT) research and conservation efforts in Zimbabwe including species population monitoring using GPS collars, wildlife-vehicle collision prevention, conservation education programs for local school children, and community livelihood programs for women.

$58,000

Monarch Tagging

Once ubiquitous throughout Oklahoma, the beloved Monarch butterfly is endangered and threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, climate change, and overuse of pesticides. The OKC Zoo partners with Monarch Watch to tag butterflies during their annual migration each September. Data from this project is used to understand migration pathways, how weather affects migration, and the survival of migrating Monarchs.

In 2022, 40 volunteers and staff successfully tagged 100 Monarch butterflies on zoo grounds. Taggers also weighed the insects and checked them for parasites. Two of these butterflies were retagged in El Rosario, Mexico, 1,295 miles from the Zoo! This extra data helps provide important benchmarks to track species’ health during future migrations.

Lizard Tracking

Texas horned lizards were once common in central Oklahoma, but their population has sharply declined due to habitat loss and the disappearance of their favorite food – native ants. As a result, the Texas horned lizard was declared a species of special concern by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The OKC Zoo partners with the University of Oklahoma to track healthy lizard populations living on Tinker Air Force Base. Additionally, Zoo staff and OU students established and maintain a head start program raising lizards on Zoo grounds in a protected environment before releasing them into the wild to improve survival rates and increase the native population.

In 2022, 23 Zoo staff members joined the tracking team to monitor the well-being of the lizards living on Base. Three lizards from the head start program were tracked into brumation (winter dormancy). This exciting development confirms that the reintroduced lizards can emulate natural behavior which is required for survival through Oklahoma’s winter.

Conservation Fundraising & Partnerships

Fundraising Recap

Round Up For Conservation

Guests may support our initiatives by rounding up their purchases to the next dollar amount when visiting the Zoo.

$145,091.67

Total funds raised in FY 2023

Local

Conservation Partners

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife (ODWC)

We work with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) to monitor native species including bat, winter bird, and lesser prairie chicken populations in our state. We also provide financial support to the department and office space for ODWC staff.

The Nature Conservancy of Oklahoma

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is one of the Zoo’s legacy conservation partners, and we contribute $20,000 annually to support scientific research conducted on TNC’s 12 nature reserves in Oklahoma. TNC uses this research to inform and guide its landscape restoration and management activities. Native species positively impacted by this work include monarch butterflies and other pollinators, bison, elk, American black bear, bats, songbirds, chicken turtles, native fish, and native plants.

Global Conservation Partners

Foundation for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Guatemala (FUNDESGUA)

Your Zoo partners with FUNDESGUA to protect the Guatemalan beaded lizard and the Campbell’s alligator lizard using science-based strategies embedded in local communities to guide everyday actions. In Guatemala, lack of access to electricity causes locals to chop down old-growth trees to cook and heat homes. To combat this and protect the lizards’ remaining habitats, FUNDESGUA supplied saplings for community-managed forests with fast-growing native Eucalyptus and Pine Oak trees for easy access to firewood.

Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA)

The Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) is an action-oriented global partnership focusing on species that are at high risk of extinction and working in turtle diversity hotspots around the world. TSA has made a bold commitment to zero turtle extinctions in the 21st century using a three-pronged approach:

• Restoring populations in the wild where possible.

• Securing species in captivity through assurance colonies.

• Building the capacity to restore, secure, and conserve species within their range country.

Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF)

The Cheetah Conservation Fund is committed to developing best practices that benefit the entire ecosystem where cheetahs live. Due to habitat loss, cheetahs compete with humans for space and food. They are also seen as threats to livestock. CCF combats this issue by placing livestock guarding dogs with local farmers. This solution has reduced livestock predation by 85% for farmers using dogs.

Giraffe Conservation Foundation

Giraffes are in serious trouble. The world’s population has declined nearly 40% in the past 30 years due to climate change, habitat loss, poaching, and civil unrest. The OKC Zoo contributed $20,000 last year to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to support wildlife veterinarians in Tanzania and Uganda and African students conducting research with conservation applications. You can help giraffes by rounding up when making purchases at the Zoo. Our Round Up for Conservation Fund is used to help hundreds of species around the world, including giraffes.

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (DFGF)

Founded by conservationist Dian Fossey over 50 years ago, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (DFGF) is the world’s longest-running gorilla conservation program. The OKC Zoo is a legacy partner and contributes $20,000 annually to support day-today operations of the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, which is the base of field activities. You may support the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International by making a restricted gift to OZS or rounding up when making purchases at the Zoo.

Emma Hedrick loves animals.

She spends as much time at the OKC Zoo as she can, participating in animal encounters, education camps, and simply walking the grounds with her parents, Melissa and Rafael Hedrick.

Emma’s enthusiasm for living things led her to learn more about conservation and what it means when a species is endangered and facing extinction. When she learned how the OKC Zoo works to protect wildlife and wild spaces, she asked her parents if she could donate her allowance to the Oklahoma Zoological Society to support conservation efforts.

“My worries are that if an animal becomes extinct it would destroy the ecosystem,” Emma explained. “My hopes are that all the endangered animals are saved.”

Oklahoma Zoological Society is proud to partner with Emma to help protect wildlife and wild places.

Education

Education is fundamental to our commitment to species preservation. Since the 1960s, the OKC Zoo has offered engaging programs that connect our community with wildlife to encourage conservation action.

Nature Explorer Preschool Ages 3-5

The amount of time children spend outdoors decreased significantly over the last 20 years.

At Nature Explorers Preschool, we pride ourselves on providing children with the opportunity to connect with nature in hands-on, meaningful ways. This unique experience not only helps students develop a profound understanding of the natural world and their role within it but also nurtures their sense of wonder and curiosity.

Additionally, outdoor and nature-based activities can help students develop important problemsolving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. Through the Nature Explorers program, we foster empathy for animals and help children understand

how humans and nature are connected. We also show children how their active participation in caring for nature can have a positive impact.

Using the OKC Zoo as a classroom, an average day at our center is dedicated to outdoor activities in which our students learn about animals, their habitats, their vital roles in our world, and our shared responsibility to protect and preserve them. In addition, our curriculum is aligned with the Oklahoma Early Learning Guidelines, Oklahoma Academic Standards for Pre-K, and the development of school readiness skills, all of which are integrated into our daily routines.

Conservation Club Ages 8-13

Protecting the planet starts here! This program teaches young environmentalists how to make the planet a place where wildlife and wild places thrive through hands-on activities, chats with experts, and expeditions through the Zoo.

Field Trips

Schools across Oklahoma come to the OKC Zoo for educational field trips with their students offering the opportunity to interact with and learn about our earth’s amazing plants and animals. Schools are welcome to include a Zoo Class during their day at the Zoo and meet our animal ambassadors up close!

Read for Adventure Sponsored by OG&E

Thanks to our generous partner, OG&E, the Zoo published a children’s book, Juniper’s Butterfly Garden, to teach kids the importance of protecting pollinators. The book is available at public libraries throughout Oklahoma. Families who check out the book receive four free tickets to the OKC Zoo.

The Inasmuch Foundation is a catalyst for positive, impactful change.

The Foundation’s presence is felt throughout our community, including the OKC Zoo. Inasmuch Foundation supports the growth of our Zoo through expansion projects like Sanctuary Asia, home to our beloved Asian elephant herd, and Expedition Africa, the Zoo’s largest habitat expansion in history.

Inasmuch Foundation Chairman and CEO Bob Ross says he is proud of their partnership with the Zoo.

“The Zoo is such an important part of Oklahoma City. It touches everyone. All families come to the Zoo because it’s so well-regarded. Everyone knows how fabulous our Zoo is,” he said.

The Foundation’s Board Chair, David Griffin, agrees.

“There is always something to see, something to learn about. There is a huge educational component. And to see the work they are doing in conservation and environmental stewardship,” Griffin explains. “It’s been an important part of our family.”

Mr. Ross believes it is vital to keep investing in the OKC Zoo.

“We have something very special there, and it’s something the whole city is proud of.”

OKC Zoo Completes New Administration Building

In the spring of 2023, construction was completed on the Zoo’s new Administration building. Finally, all of the Zoo’s internal departments could be housed together rather than spread throughout the park. The building boasts several conference rooms, a full kitchen, and ample space for staff expansion.

Designed by architectural firm Beck Design, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Conservation and Administrative Building aligns with the Zoo’s commitment to advancing projects that support a sustainable future. This state-of-the-art, green building provides an innovative new space for team members that combines modern function with the beauty of nature and bold design. Natural light enhances the building’s interior which also highlights a variety of repurposed, eco-friendly, and biodegradable components. The OKC Zoo is pursuing LEED status for this building.

Events

The OKC Zoo hosts events throughout the year for the public to enjoy. From familyfriendly holiday events like Haunt the Zoo and SAFARI LIGHTS to annual fundraising soirees like ZOObrew and the Zoo Gala, the OKC Zoo is the premiere location for a WILD time.

OKC Zoo Gala Journey To Africa

Co-chairs Cindy Batt and Donita Thomas planned the wildly successful OKC Zoo Gala: Journey To Africa, presented by Dr. Margaret Freede and Judge Dan Owens. The 2023 theme was a nod to the Zoo’s largest habitat expansion in its history, Expedition Africa, which brings the African savanna to the plains of Oklahoma. Guests enjoyed a performance by African drummers during the cocktail hour and experienced an exclusive preview of Expedition Africa before it opened to the public.

Byron Gambulos has lived a charmed life.

Business leader, war veteran, husband, dad, and grandpa, he has built

a close-knit

circle of friends and family here in Oklahoma City. Of all the experiences he’s enjoyed, his favorite memory in his entire life happened at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

In 1952, Byron was recalled by the military to serve in Korea. He opted to wait until the last minute before leaving his wife, Pat, and children to go overseas. At 6 am the morning he was to depart, the Army called him and said, “Stay where you are. We are discharging you.” Byron said he and Pat decided to celebrate by packing a picnic and taking their two children to the Zoo to celebrate.

“Those were the best peanut butter sandwiches I ever had,” he recalled, laughing.

Thus began his love affair with the OKC Zoo; one that would span the next 70 years. Byron worked with other Oklahoma City business leaders including John Kirkpatrick, Ron Rosser, and Don Zachritz, to help build the world-class zoo we enjoy today.

The Gambulos name can be found around the Zoo but most prominently at the ZooZeum housed in the old bathhouse. Byron and Pat recognized that the Zoo’s rich history should be shared with new generations visiting the grounds. They created the first museum of its kind dedicated to the Zoo’s evolution from a roadside zoo with one white-tailed deer in

Wheeler Park to the 150-acre jewel it is today. Byron is most proud of his grandson, Blake Cody, who is following in Byron’s footsteps serving on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Zoological Society. Blake took over operations of Byron’s Liquor Warehouse on NW 23rd Street after finishing college and was instrumental in establishing one of OZS’s most popular and successful fundraising events, ZOObrew.

“My involvement with ZOObrew as well as the young professionals group, ZOOtroop, helped me form a deeper connection to the Zoo,” Blake explained. “Through the family ties, many events and fundraisers, as well as countless days spent walking the grounds, I have formed a deep fondness for the OKC Zoo, and I hope to aid its continued growth and success for future generations to enjoy as my family and I have done.”
