GHANA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL DEFINITION OF FEE CATEGORIES

In Ghana International School there are four fee categories. Please see the details below.

Staff fee category. This is available to the children of employees of the School only.

Ghanaian fee category. This is available to the children of families where one or both parents are of Ghanaian nationality. Children must be registered at birth by a parent who must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate to register. Once registered as babies, children are placed on a waiting list. Offers of places are allocated on a first come first served basis. That means that the Office of Admissions looks at a child’s date of birth and its proximity to the date of registration. Ghanaian applicants may only be admitted at the start of the new academic year in September.

If a family is applying for a Ghanaian place after the child has attained two years old, the first possible entry point is Year 3 which is the first year of Junior School.

Long Term fee category. This is for parents who are foreign passport holders but have been living and working in Ghana for a period of at least ten continuous years. Long term parents must register children at birth as for Ghanaians and provide a copy of the child ’s birth certificate to register. Before a family is registered as Long Term, they must provide evidence (from resident permits in passports) of a parent’s continuous residency. Long Term applicants may only be admitted at the start of the new academic year in September.

Short Term fee category. This is for families that are new to Ghana and have, typically, been posted to the country for a limited period of time. Parents must provide their child’s birth certificate to register. This is the only fee category that is able to gain ‘on the spot’ admission.

However, when classes are full, Short Term applicants can be placed on a waiting list. Short Term applicants may be admitted throughout the School year as appropriate.

Please note that all admission enquiries must be undertaken by a parent or legal guardian.

The Office of Admissions will not communicate with ‘third parties.’

The registration fee of $100 is the same for the Ghanaian, Long term and Short Term fee categories.

Parents, please help us by: 

Registering your baby as soon as you have obtained a birth certificate (if you are in the Ghanaian or Long Term Fee Categories).



Always communicating directly with the Office of Admissions and not sending third party representatives ( who will be politely turned away).



Meeting all the deadlines for the submission of documentation and payments of fees. Delays will halt the admissions process.



Application Reminders The School is extremely popular! All Ghanaian applicants for Primary School must be registered at birth or as soon after to have the opportunity of gaining a school place. Parents must present a birth certificate in order to register their child.

Parents who have not registered at birth or within the first year of life risk not gaining their desired place.

The Office of Admissions will not register children who are over two years old for the Infant School. The next possible entry point is Year 3 which is the first year of Junior School.

All prospective students are assessed in term two prior to the new academic year in September.

Interested in Admission to Ghana International School and you are out of the country? The Office of Admissions is more than happy to conduct Skype interviews. Once you are in the country, come yourselves to see the Head of Admissions and appreciate the excellent service offered at the School.

The Office of Admissions will not deal with third parties or representatives, and will only conduct interviews with parents or legal guardians.

ONLINE ADMISSIONS TESTING

The Office of Admissions is happy to report the successful piloting of online entry assessments which were conducted this academic year with the Examination Records Bureau (ERB) Tests, which were undertaken in the IT labs, have all run smoothly with the results being communicated to the Office of Admissions and parents within 24 hours.

This international testing method is a step forward in ensuring a non curriculum based entry assessment that is suitable for children from diverse backgrounds. It also guarantees transparency and fairness in the entry assessment process.

ongratulations to Dr. Ashun!

We are very proud to announce that Dr. Mrs. Mary Asabea Ashun, Principal of Ghana International School has been appointed to serve as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA).

A

ISA is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to leading and supporting strategic thinking, professional learning and school effectiveness in all its schools. It currently has a membership of 76 schools across 34 countries. Together, these schools serve approximately 27,000 students supported by over 3,000 teachers.

Established in 1969, AISA offers and supports a wide variety of powerful professional learning programmes specifically designed to meet the unique needs of diverse international-school bodies in Africa.In February of this year, AISA collaborated with GIS to organise a Professional Learning Institute (PLI) under the theme, “Empowering the 21st Century Learner Through an Integrated Approach”. We anticipate that this appointment will strengthen the bonds between GIS and AISA, enabling us to provide more training and learning opportunities for our teachers and students.

r Ashun joins a nine-member board that oversees AISA’s finances and strategic planning. As a member of the Board of Directors she shall serve for a term of two years with an option to extend for an additional year. Of note is the fact that Dr Ashun will be the only person of colour on the Board. Along with AISA, we applaud this diversity at the highest level of decision making in the African International School environment. She brings to the position rich experience in educational leadership and strong administrative skills.

I have no doubt that, given the passionate educator she is, Dr Ashun’s experience and knowledge will help to strengthen AISA’s impact. In supporting Dr Ashun to serve on this board, we, as a GIS community will be helping achieve our School’s strategic goal 4, which is “To make impact in our community through service”.

Community Service

As many parents are already aware, the key words for the new academic year are SOCIAL RESPONSIBILIY. Through community service projects, special events and day to day classroom learning, the School is passionate to imbibe in its students a sense of social responsibility.

“With privilege comes responsibility”, and this approach is evidenced throughout the School as we work tirelessly in line with our fourth strategic goal “To make impact in our community through service”.

his annual event for all new families was exceptionally well attended. Parents and some accompanying children were able to meet the Principal and key members of her management team.

The event culminated in a buffet and tours of both the Primary and Secondary Schools.

This event was repeated on Friday 13th September in the Office of Admissions.
