We are celebrating 40 years of enriching people’s lives through recreation! Our department was established in 1976 to provide the citizens of Alpharetta with quality recreation programs, services and parks. With the support of citizens and City officials, our department has developed activities and facilities consistent with the City’s core values of Excellence, Stewardship, Integrity, Service, and Loyalty. Our focus this year is “Let’s Play it Forward” and we look forward to meeting the leisure needs of our community in the next 40 years!

PoIntS oF PrIde: Meet alphie!

Earlier this year, our department adopted a cute, kid-friendly mascot named Alphie, the Park Pup. Alphie is our official “Ambassador of Fun” and has helped us to enhance public awareness of the recreation programs, facilities and services available through City of Alpharetta Recreation and Parks. Promoting the benefits of leisure, health and wellness for people of all ages is Alphie’s main focus. Be on the lookout for Alphie – coming to a park near you!

MoU with the City of Milton: The Memorandum of Understanding between the cities of Alpharetta and Milton, for a mutually beneficial partnership for provision of recreation and parks programs and services, has been extended another year.

MoU with the City of Johns Creek: In 2016, the cities of Alpharetta and Johns Creek entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for a mutually beneficial partnership for provision of designated youth recreation programs in Spring and Fall 2016. The terms of this partnership are reviewed annually to ensure the goals meet the objectives of the arrangement. alpharetta Bike Share Program: Explore your City of Parks!

In Spring 2016, the City of Alpharetta implemented a Bike Share Program to provide residents and visitors a bike-friendly transportation alternative. Bike “docking” stations are located in designated areas along Alpharetta’s Big Creek Greenway for people to access. Each user must set up an account at www.zagster.com/Alpharetta. Bikes can be rented by accessing a website account or through Zagster’s mobile app.

First 3 hours of use each day are at no cost. Each additional hour is $3, with a cap of $24 per day.

e employee recognition: Deputy Director Lisa Cherry and Recreation Coordinator Cara Prell successfully completed the requirements to obtain the distinction of Certified Pool/Spa Operator.

Marketing/Accreditation Coordinator Amy Rickman and Ms. Prell were selected to attend the Leadership GRPA I program held at the 4-H Conference Center in Eatonton, GA in April. This prestigious training opportunity is held annually and limited to 21 recreation and parks professionals from the state of Georgia.

Park and Ca CaPItal ProJeCtS SUMMarY: Wills Park: Water quality and drainage study for storm bank restoration and protection at Wills Park is complete.

Partnering with Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association, we were able to purchase two new baseball scoreboards at the park. Indoor renovations were completed at Wills Park Recreation Center in early 2016. This includes painting, new lighting and ceiling fans in the multi-purpose room, as well as new flooring in common areas.

Webb Bridge Park: Phase 3 of the drainage and erosion control project at this park was completed in Spring 2016. north Park: Drainage improvements at the North Metro Miracle League were completed in Spring 2016.

Brooke Street Park: A new bandstand was constructed on the lawn behind City Hall. This lawn is the site of the City’s annual Memorial Day Tribute and Veterans Appreciation Day Ceremony. alpharetta arts Center: The City is in the process of developing a plan to re-design the old Fulton County library into a new arts center. Citizen input was obtained through a series of public meetings as well as an online survey to determine the types of programs, events and offerings citizens hoped to see at the new center. Implementation of the plan will begin when funds for the project are available.

An ongoing adult recreation program, the ACB is open to all adult band musicians and high school students with the recommendation of their band directors. The ACB performs for such City events as July 4th, City Tree Lighting, Taste of Alpharetta, and Old Soldiers Day. Other concerts are held at churches, senior resident complexes, and special events. No auditions are required and openings are available in most sections.

Do you have an active, flipping, twisting, gravitydefying ball of energy living in your house? Let them release their energy while developing a love for physical activity in our gymnastics center. A viewing window is available for parents to watch classes.

They are implementing baseline testing programs, in game sideline measures and tools such as Pete Carroll’s ‘Hawk Tackle’ keeping the head out of tackling, that are unprecedented in youth football.

Hands down, one of the best leagues in the country, according to Buddy Curry, NFL All Pro and Defensive Rookieof-the-Year, and USA Football ‘Heads Up Tackling’ liaison.

With two state-of-the-art, synthetic turf fields (safer, softer and faster playing surfaces) NAFL’s home fields are located at Alpharetta North Park. Founded in 1975, NAFL is an all volunteer organization led by members of the community.

Wills Park Equestrian Center

Wills Park Equestrian Center is a unique feature of the Recreation and Parks Department. The center hosts a variety of events including 50 Horse Shows, 15 Dog Agility Shows, and 10 Special Events for the 2017 show season. Call 678-297-6120 for more information. Many of these events are free to the public. All events are geared to people of all ages and are held rain or shine. Dust off those boots, put on your fanciest of hats, and make plans to enjoy one of the finest show facilities in the Southeast!

SPeCIal eventS

The Animal Rescue Fair is one of the most unique events held at the Center. Over 5,000 people attend this event annually, one of the largest in the Southeast. This event offers a variety of rescue facilities a better way for adoptions.

Additional events scheduled for 2017 include the 25th Annual North Fulton Cub Scouts Day Camp, and the 3rd Annual Celebrate Freedom Rodeo offering various rodeo disciplines and vendors.

We also offer a variety of Private Corporate Rentals during the calendar year.

HorSe SHoWS

Horse Shows are the majority of events hosted at the facility. We host local GHJA and Nationally USEFsanctioned (A) rated Hunter Jumper Horseshows. Notable horse shows include Brownwood Farms, Elite Show Jumping, Cheryl & Co., Equus Events, and the Bolshoi Benefit, all of which have hosted shows at the facility for over 25 years. Most of these shows offer free admission so bring the family and enjoy the grace and elegance of horse and rider.

Horse owners may purchase a daily or annual riding pass and must use the facility in accordance with park and riding pass rules and regulations. Passes may be purchased at the Equestrian Center Manager’s Office.

doG SHoWS

The Dog Show schedule typically runs early spring to late fall and follows the AKC Calendar. Some notable clubs showing this year include Atlanta Obedience, 4 Paw, and Sirius Dog Agility. There are vendors at every show so be sure to bring home the best for your dog. Agility trials are races negotiated over an obstacle of jumps, tunnels, tires, weave poles, and seesaws. The dog with the least faults and best time wins. These are great shows for people who love their canine friends!

Under the terms of the partnership agreement with the City of Milton, the City of Alpharetta defines a “Resident” as one whose legal domicile is located within the tax jurisdiction of the City of Alpharetta or the City of Milton. Milton residents pay Resident fees for recreation programs. City of Alpharetta residents and City of Milton residents who are returning participants in a specific program may register during “PRIORITY REGISTRATION” period. All other City of Milton residents may register during “CITY MILTON REGISTRATION” period. “OPEN REGISTRATION” for all others begins two (2) weeks after the start of Priority Registration PLEASE NOTE: The privileges of advanced registration and the same fee structure for recreation and parks programs for City of Alpharetta and City of Milton residents shall be in effect for the duration of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Cities.
