1. INTRODUCTION GENERAL DATA: This project began on March and ended by the first week of June. It was designed for two groups of students. One group of 22 students from Institut Els Alfacs in Sant Carles de La Ràpita in Tarragona (Spain) whose ages are 14-15 years old. The other group of students is from I.C. Via Carotenuto 30, Rome, Italy and they are 13-14 years old. It took place within the Foreign Language English subject. The Spanish students learnt about the Italian eating habits and vice versa. We used English through the whole project. Different work and communication and collaborative tools were used such as the chat in our Twinspace or Padlet. The process and result of the project is reflected in its Twinspace. The students had the opportunity to work in national and transnational groups. Respect values for other cultures were worked through the use of the foreign language (English) that we used in the project.

OBJECTIVES: • Analyze a personal menu of what we usually eat and create a new, healthier one. • Raise awareness, promote and train in the need and development of healthy eating habits. • Know the health benefits of taking non-processed food. • Know the different food groups, properties and origin of them and compare them with the diets of the other country. • Practise intake of healthy and natural foods. • Value food hygiene. • Investigate and collect information on general culture and gastronomy, in particular, from the partner country. • Foster tolerance, solidarity, group work and the feeling of being a European citizen. • Use the foreign language (English) to communicate with the partner country students. • Use of ICT.

2.2. DISCUSSION FROM STEP 3 The students watched 3 videos in class about healthy eating options. After that, they discussed in pairs in class about it. Then, some of them reflected some of the new things they had learnt in a “Discussion”.

Here you can see some examples of their reflections:

I learned some useful info from video 2 since every day I eat a snack at the school breaks that now I might change my diet. -Mar Castellà Vidal I learned a lot of thinks to this project I learned good healthy habits… -Josep GasparínYes, I learn most from vídeo two. I applied the vídeo to my daily routine by eating boiled eggs instead of fried eggs for breakfast. Also I change cookies for nuts to snack.-Africa Ruiz Yes, I learn to eat healthier and the reason why I did it. -Ámbar.

2.3. REFLECT AND COMPARE: 2.3.1. DISCUSSION In order to reflect on their eating habits and then compare them to the ones from the other country students, they asked and answered questions about it. Some

of the students asked short answers, others wrote a paragraph explaining about their country and some others replied using a voice recording which you can alse

listen to in the links below:

FOOD HABITS IN SPAIN

Italy and Spain, are Mediterranean countries characterized for being two of the most healthy-diet-countries and have both very rich gastronomies. With the globalization, eating habits in Spain have changed and we started introducing americanized products, but not in all houses. In my house we try to avoid ultra processed food and we normally eat palm-oil-free food.

We always cook with olive oil. In our town, we also have a lot of fresh fish because our privileged geographical situation next to the sea and our fabulous climate, helps us to balance our diet.

A typical food when a large quantity of people get together is the famous paella. This well-known dish is very personalised depending on everyone likings, can be made with meat, seashells, vegetables‌ and not everybody likes rice at the same point of cooking!

As many countries, we divide our daily food ingest in four meals: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner being lunch the most important one.

People normally only eat snacks and fast food in special occasions like in weekends or while being with friends, but on the morning break people started buying unhealthy chips and sweets more and more at the highschool bar. Are these food habits the same in Italy?- Arnau Bel 31

Food in Spain. The food in Spain is wonderful. When someone thinks about food in Spain they think about paella, fuet, seafood... because they are the most popular things that we eat here. Some popular food here too is the omelette and I think is one of the most delicious things that I eat I love omelette and it’s very easy to do. In Spain we eat at 14.00 more or less if we are not at school because we finish at 14.45 so we eat at 15.00. For lunch I usually eat pasta and meat or vegetables and an omelette. At home both of my parents cook together and sometimes my brothers and I help them, we always have home prepared food for lunch but for dinner we sometimes have precooked food like “Yatekomo”.

Sara Masdeu

Here in Spain, it depends on many things at what hour we have lunch, usually, it depends on at what hour we get home from school or work, for example when I used to go to school I had lunch around one o'clock but now that I go to high school I have lunch around three o'clock.Mar Castellà Vidal

32

Foods habits in Spain People of Sant Carles de la Ràpita we eat five times. Breakfast (a glass of milk), morning snack (sandwich), lunch, afternoon snack (fruit) and dinner. We eat a lot home-cooked food. Usually cook my mother, except some Sundays, that my father cook paella. At half past seven I have breakfast, at ten o’clock I have morning snack, at quarter to three I have lunch, at half past five I have afternoon snack and at nine o’clock I have dinner in days of school. In my house doesn’t eat prepared food because cook my mother or my father. Some traditional food is rice, noodles, bread with tomato, fish, earth snails, cannelloni, custard,

Catalan

“calçots”

and

sausages.

Food habits in Catalonia Today I will talk about traditional food of Catalonia. The typical Catalan dishes are esqueixada de bacallà, arròs negre. A good arròs negre is always served with allioli. Fideuà, mandonguilles amb sípia; this combination of meat and seafood is very common and we call it mar i muntanya, literally, sea and mountain. Canelons, it is traditional to eat them on December 26th using the left overs from Christmas dinner. Another dish are botifarra amb mongetes, this is a very special dish reserved for festive occasions. Vegetarian traditional Catalan food to die: pa amb tomàquet, calçots, escalivada…

The traditional desserts in Catalonia are crema Catalana this is a very old traditional dessert to the region, mel i mató... Which is traditional Italian food? Alèxia Brusca

Eating habits in Spain In Spain we eat a lot of paella and potato omelette but we alse eat more things like fish, meat etc.At breackfast we usually eat nesquik, muffins, toast with marmalade. At dinner we eat meat with potatos, potato omelette etc. And for dinner we usually eat cereals, pizza, etc... At lunch spanish people usually eat cereal, soup, hamburger... but some hours after having lunch we eat a Snack like a “bollicao”. By Luis Ordean

In Spain it's habitual breakfast two times every morning. One time is when we wake up and the last breakfast it's midmorning. MARTA MARIANO

2.3.2. DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES After asking and answering questions to each country about their eating habits, they spotted the following similarities and differences between them both:

Differences: -The most differencie with the Italian people is that, they have lunch at 13:00 and we have lunch at 14:30, because all the teenagers in Spain finished the school at 14:30/15:00. -In Italy the people eats more pasta and they hasn’t eat much variety. And the Spanish people eat a lot of types of food, for example: fish, pasta, meat, rice… - In Spain is typical eat appetizer like fish, potatoes, bread in tomato, ham… In Italy the people hasn’t eat appetizer (not all).

Similarities: - In Spain, the people eats a lot of Pizza too, because it's a delicious Italian typical food, and we love this food. - Spanish and Italian food have three basic dishes, first, second and third dish. Silvia Gomez and Paula Serrat

-Josep GasparínSimilarities In Italy and in Spain people usually have milk and biscuits for breakfast.

Differences The diference in Spain and Italy is: In Italy often eat pasta and in the mediterrani are more variety: fish, meat... In Spain normaly for dinner is at 21:00 P.M and in Italy is at 19:00 P.M In Spain don't use so much time for cooking. 42

DIFFERENCES Italian people have lunch between 13:00 and 13:30 and we have lunch between 14:30 and 15:00. And they always eat pasta at lunch, we have more variety: one day we eat meat, another fish, vegetables, pasta… In Italy, is usual to have dinner at 19:30, in Spain, having dinner at that hour is very soon, we have dinner at 21:30. There, they stay a lot of time eating with their family, with their friends, talking… On working days, we eat very quickly, but in holidays we can stay a lot

of time talking with our family, friends... SIMILARITIES Italian people usually eat milk and biscuits for breakfast, and some Spanish people eat milk and biscuits for breakfast too, but some Italian people drink tea for breakfast, we don’t. In Italy, they eat a lot of snacks, we eat them too, and we eat a lot chips too. Spanish people love them! Our both meal of the day is lunch, but in Spain breakfast is a very important meal too. In Spain, we eat pizza as a take away foot. It is very traditional in Spain that teenagers meet and take pizza and eat it at home. Here, we have a lot of variety of pasta too, but we have taken the idea of pasta of Italy. This is a consequence of globalization.

Alba Taulés and Marta Mariano

43

GUILLEM ROIG and NOAH SANCHO Differencies: In Spain, the appetizer consists of tapas like fried fish, potatoes, on the other part in Italia the appetizer is the famous “antipasto”, which consists in meat, vegetables, fish… Italian people eat more pasta than Spanish people. In italia they cook pasta different, they boil the pasta until is “al dente” and here in Spain we boil pasta until is soft.

Similarities: The both countries cook using olive oil which is the base of the mediterranian diet, they also eat fish, meat, vegetables, rice and pasta like in Spain. We eat in the same order the first plate, the second plate and the dessert. We eat also at the same hours, we have lunch at 14:00 and we have dinner around 20:30.

44

Differences. With all the information that we have read these are the differences of the eating habits between Italy and Spain Spanish people eat later than Italian people, they have lunch at 13.00 and almost all of us have lunh at 14.00 or even later and they have dinner at 7.30 but we have it at 21.00. They spend more time eating too. Italian people eat a less variety of food and we eat vegetables, pasta, fish and meat.

Similarities Some similarities are that on the south of Italy have dinner at the same time as us and some of the food that we eat is the same as the people of Italy, for exemple pizza, some snacks, meat,... Each country has differents things but we always have similarities.

POL FAUS

Food in Catalonia

Hello, today I’m going to talk about food in Catalonia. In Catalonia we eat some types of fish, vegetables or seafood depending on season. The restaurants design the menu depending on that, and people in houses too. Mussels and seafood are a very common food here, in La Rà pita, but the best season to eat them is in summer. Paella, black rice and bread with tomato, are some tipycal food in Catalonia.

46

Meal times also depend on the season, in summer people eat later because they spend their time on the beach, sometimes we eat late because we are having a party. There isn’t a specific time to have a meal in summer, and I like it very much. And the other seasons depend on the working times. We usually have a small breakfast, a big lunch and normal dinner and an afternoon snack, particularly for young people. In Spain a typical tradition is having lunch with grandparents on Sundays and everyone contributes with something special. The food is cooked, mostly, with oil, not butter. We love also fast food, but not for every day, only some occasions.

47

DIFFERENCES Food habits in Mediterranean countries are very similar between them, nevertheless, there are some of them that change between Italian and Spanish people. In Spain, we also eat pasta but not that much! In my house, for example we eat pasta twice a week. We normally eat pasta with tomato or with cooking cream. Lunch is also our main meal, but we eat a bit laterer. We finish school at 14:35 and we have lunch almost at three o’clock. Believe it or not, we normally call all kind of long pasta the same way without differentiating between pappardelle, fettuccine, tagliatelle… for us, it’s all spaghetti. What about if you teach us the name of all kinds of pasta?

SIMILARITIES There are some similarities to Italian and Spanish food, there are some examples. Italy has pizza and every town has a regional bread. Spain has more or less one Italian bread. Both Italian and Spanish cuisine have a wide array of cheese varieties. Another is that both cook with olive oil.

Differences Spanish people eat a lot of paella and potato omelette. In Italy people eat pasta almost every day. In Italy people have lunch at 13:00 and in Spain prople have lunch at 15:00.

And a big difference betwween Spain and Italy is that we eat very fast but in Italy people eat slower than us. We have dinner at 20:30 but in Italy they have dinner at 19:30. Similarities The Mediterranean diet is inspired by Spanish and Italian food. The pasta in Italy is a very important food in their lives and in Spain it also eats a lot. Another thing that has in common is lunch time: 14:00 and what they eat: 21:00. (it depends on the family ) The menu in Italy and Spain usually consists of three dishes: the starter, the main one and the desserts.

Similarities In the forum I can see we have more similarities with Italy that I can thought. For example: ‘Italian people do not usually have tea in the afternoon, maybe old ladies. The same as us.’

In Spain when you have a busy job usually the people takes a tapperware with food to the office and eats there. And the Italian people eating habits are changing because women go to work, they have less time to cook, so we go to fast food much more than in the past.

In general what is fast food comes to be the same but when we talk about processed food they are not so similar anymore. Ámbar López-Chicheri Reverté and Mar Castellà Vidal

DIFFERENCES In Spain people cook the pasta for more time and in Italy they cook for less time. In Spain people have lunch between the 14:00 and 15:00 and in Italy between 12:00 and 13:00. For dinner in Spain people eat between 21:00 and 22:00 and in Italy between 19:00 and 20:00. In Spain people eat a lot of rice and in Italy eat a lot of pasta.

SIMILARITIES The Mediterranean Diet is known to be one of the healthiest due to the great variety and quality of the food used for cooking, the most famous ones are the Italian and the Spanish cuisine. Food is very important in both Spanish and Italian culture. Olive oil is used for cooking instead of butter or sunflower oil. Both the Italian and Spanish people love pasta.

Dear Spanish friends, we prepared a healthy weekly menu for young students who also practise some sports. So they need to eat some calories because they move a lot every day but they also need to have a healthy habit. I hope you like it. Bye

Melissa

I think we learned a lot thanks to this project. We learned good healthy eating habits with our Science teacher and our English teacher. We learned how much sugar the snacks we eat have, we learned to drink more water and less juice, more fruit and less sweets.

Similariti Eloisa es and differenc es between both countrie s

Michele

The main difference between a healthy and not healthy menu is that unhealthy stuffs are rich of sugar and calories. In our class we have a poster with some drinks and the quantity of sugar inside. We’ll post a photo for you. Both Spain and Italy produceolive oil, so they use a lot of olive oil instead of butter. Furthermore, their climate is very hot so they have oranges, strawberries, and lemons. They both eat meat and fish and some recipes are very similar, such as cochinillos asado is very similar to maialino very popular in Sardinia. I think that there are more similarities than differences between Spanish and Italian food because we are two mediterranean countries. We finish school at 2:00 p.m., so we have lunch at least at 2:30, but generally speaking people have lunch at 1:30, for example if you go to a restaurant. When we say we eat pasta, it doesn’t mean we eat only spaghetti and tomatoes, even soup (minestre in Italian) is a kind of pasta for Italian people because we usually have small pasta in vegetable soup for example. Same thing for dinner, we say we have dinner at 9:00 pm, but if you go to a restaurant at 10:00 maybe it’s too late and you have to wait a lot or you have to go somewhere else.

4. OUR MENUS Following with Step 6 in our Project, the students had to create a weekly menu using spreadsheets, or any other type of document they preferred to use. Tus, the students at Institut Els alfacs created a menu individually and posted it in a Padlet for all of us to vote the one we liked the best. The winning menu was Iker Paul de la Montaùa’s. On the other hand, the students from I.C. Via Carotenuto, 30 worked as a group and created one menu together and posted it in the Padlet, too. Here you can see all the menus they created and we hope you can get lots of useful ideas from them.

5. ASSESSMENT AND CONCLUSION We created two questionnaires to assess our project. One questionnaire was answered by the students and the other one by their families. After analysing the respones of the questionnaires, I have to say that the project has been very fruitful and our students agreed that they learnt about healthy habits. They also said that it was too much work in general, so that's a point to be taken into account for our next projects. However, we managed to finish waht we planned and in time. The families responses were all positive, too. They said that their children had mostly shared the activities that were doing. Most of the students and famĂlies asked if they liked to participate in a future etwinning project affirmed that they would like to do it.
