The ICOMS is the biennial opportunity IAOMS provides to its fellows and all interested OMF Surgeons worldwide to participate in a four day forum of scientific discussions, spearheaded by state of the art symposia and keynote lectures.

It is primordial to emphasise the importance of free papers and posters. Often, these papers present original insights, new methods and materials as well as “first-time” reports on very recent and ongoing research projects. These papers also promote young talented surgeons and researchers by giving them an international audience that provides a “peer review” during question and answer sessions. These papers and posters are very valuable to both the presenters and the audience.

This program reflects the state of our profession in terms of its scientific interests. Statistical analysis of its contents would give meaningful information on the most popular and the most innovative subjects, but also on the geographical distribution of centers of research and excellence that are represented during the conference. As a profession, we hope that the outstanding quality of the program reflects a sound strategic vision for the future development of the scientific foundation of our clinical practice.

Scientific inquiry is the engine of progress that informs the delivery of healthcare, whether it is the introduction of a novel technique, a case report of interest, a clinical series or a sophisticated double-blinded controlled clinical trial.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, although established for decades in many nations, is still a relatively new and emerging surgical specialty in many regions. As our specialty possesses knowledge across both the medical and dental spectrum, our contribution to the treatment of a wide range of diseases and disorders that affect our communities is unique and a great source of pride.

As specific surgical techniques continue to grow within the scope of our practice, sub-specialty areas have developed and require recognition for their contributions. While oral and maxillofacial surgery may overlap with the activities of a number of other specialties, the skills gained by formal oral and maxillofacial training provide an unparalleled insight into the structure and function of the craniofacial skeleton, the masticatory system and the complexity of the oral/dental environment.

The range of scientific papers within the program reflects the diversity of our community of practitioners as well as the strengths of our specialty and Association. We wish to thank all surgeons who have taken the time and effort to prepare and present their work and we hope your participation in the program will be valuable and meaningful to your role in the profession.

Message from the Hon. Jill Hennessy, Minister for Health On behalf of the Andrews Labor Government, I offer you a very warm welcome to Victoria for the 22nd International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Victoria is a world-leader in health and medical research, and I am incredibly proud of the work being done at our hospitals, our medical research institutes, and our universities to improve patients’ lives, their experiences, and their outcomes.

Victoria is home to around 150 biotechnology companies, 10 major medical research institutes, 10 teaching hospitals conducting significant research, and 9 universities, and our outstanding health and medical research capabilities across a range of fields are recognised both nationally and globally.

Through international partnerships, we may find new solutions to global health challenges, so I hope this conference will be an opportunity to learn and share your knowledge and expertise, strengthen existing friendships and build new ones, and identify and enhance collaboration opportunities.

Bone and Implant plug and play solutions… or what is the third dimension!

Professor Nasser Nadjmi Director of the Cleft team at the University of Antwerp and Director of the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Antwerp, Belgium

Bone augmentation is one of the most important and most difficult steps in implantology. Also the standard techniques used are very sensitive, bound to a certain experience from a large number of surgeries and have a high learning curve.

Despite these facts augmentation procedures are often the least planned part of the therapy and based on poor diagnostics.

Due to a lack of standardised protocols these procedures are often performed by the surgeons favourite method instead of the most indicated one.

It is astonishing, that for the implant placement most advanced techniques are used – cone beam, navigation templates etc. – whereas augmentation procedures are often based on a high percentage of improvisation.

3D diagnostics, the use of standardised protocols (plug and play) for implant placement as well as augmentation and prefabricated allograft materials do allow a reduction of treatment time and trauma for the patient by raising the reliability and success rate of this procedure. This will make these procedures open to a larger number of implantologists and improve overall quality of implant treatments.

The aim of all surgical procedures presented, is purely to reverse the effects of facial aging and to give the patient a more relax and youthful and natural appearance. Patients should look better after the surgery but definitely not be changed. Our philosophy is to restore the effects of aging of the face without changing the individual facial expressions.

Successful facial plastic surgery is a result of good understanding between patient and surgeon. The problems encountered in correcting the facial rejuvenation are as follows.

1 The dermal component, which is dependent on intrinsic and extrinsic aging process (dermal elastosis).

2 Descending of the facial fat, with causes jowling and deep nasolabial groove.

3 Increase or decrease of facial fat during the aging process.

The specific need of each patient lies on the basis of the correction of the above-mentioned components. In this presentation Professor Nadjmi will discuss his experience in facial rejuvenation using “Extended SMAS Facelift” in combination with “Endoscopic Brow lifting”. The surgical procedures of upper and lower blepharoplasties will also be discussed in detail.

The International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Foundation (IAOMSF) is the charitable arm of IAOMS. For almost 20 years, IAOMSF has been dedicated to the mission of advancing the standards of care through improved education and training.

The Foundation directly supports surgeon-to-surgeon educational efforts led by experienced clinicians who travel from around the globe to developing countries to teach young surgeons and trainees state-of-the-art skills and procedures.

Charitable contributions and support to the Foundation help surgeons train others and secure medical equipment for these underserved areas. As a non profit organisation, IAOMSF relies on the generosity of doctors, members and the public to continue supporting its world-wide efforts. The Foundation events held during ICOMS 2015 offer an outstanding experience whilst making a valued contribution to the Foundation and its programs.

Ravi Hebballi is a Maxillofacial Surgeon from Bangalore, India and is currently the Councilor to the IAOMS from the Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AOMSI). In spite of his busy practice, he is a prolific artist. His paintings are mostly thought-provoking abstracts.

He has been invited to showcase his talent in various places in India and abroad, including the Indian Embassy in London.

BUSINESS CENTRE A business centre with reception, secretarial support, business equipment for sale and photocopying services is located on the ground floor of the Exhibition Centre, closest to the Clarendon Street entrance to the building.

CME ACCREDITATION The certificate you receive will contain confirmation of 20 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours to those who have attended the ICOMS 2015 Conference. These credits will not be certified by a national or regional CME accrediting agency.

CLOAK ROOM/ LUGGAGE STORAGE The cloak room is located at the Hilton entrance end of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, off the main foyer on the ground floor.

There are four car parks available at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, all open 24 hours, seven days a week.

DAILY CATERING All lunches, morning and afternoon teas from Tuesday to Thursday and morning tea on Friday will be served in the Exhibition Hall.

DELEGATE LIST A copy of the delegate list has been emailed to delegates prior to the Conference in the pre-arrival letter.

The delegate list contains the name, organisations and country of registered delegates, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors. Some delegates may not appear on the list as they have elected to withhold their name due to privacy.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Every effort has been made to cater for all delegates who have specified special dietary requests at the time of registering. Please make yourself known to a venue staff member at catering times and functions in order to obtain your meal. If you did not provide this information at the time of registering, please advise the staff at the Registration and Information Desk immediately.

The Conference dress is smart casual for sessions, Opening Ceremony & Welcome Reception, and Discover Melbourne Reception. The Conference Gala Dinner is formal (black tie).

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s main first aid room is located off the Convention Centre foyer. A smaller first aid room is located off the Exhibition Centre foyer. Please phone (03) 9235 8333 for any enquires.

ELECTRICITY

For out of hours medical emergencies:

Electrical current is 240/250V, AC 50Hz. The Australian flat three-pin power outlet is different from that in many countries, so you will need an adaptor. If your appliances are 110V, check if there is a 110/240V switch. If not, you will need a voltage converter. Universal outlets for 240V or 110V shavers are usually found in leading hotels.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE In the event of an evacuation, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre staff will act as fire wardens to assist in the movement of patrons to the designated assembly point. The current evacuation meeting point is located at the Clarendon Street entrance of the Exhibition Centre.

INSURANCE Delegates are strongly advised to secure appropriate travel and health insurance. Delegate registration fees do not provide any such insurance coverage. The Organising Committee and the Conference Organisers accept no responsibility for any loss in this regard.

Trams Most parts of the CBD and local surrounds are easily accessed by trams.

The following trams stop outside the Clarendon Street entrance of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. You will require a myki ticket to travel on trams, please see myki information below. The venue and CBD are located within Zone 1.

Separated male and female prayer rooms including washing facilities are located on the ground floor of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, just past the Customer Service desk near the Hilton entrance to the building. myki is the smart card ticketing system that operates on trains, trams and buses throughout Melbourne. Visitors packs can be purchased at the Business Centre of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre or the M Cafe located at the Clarendon Street entrance to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Top ups to existing cards can also be made at the tram stop directly opposite the Clarendon Street entrance to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (on the side of the road travelling south) or at the Seven Eleven Store on the corner of Flinders and Spencer Streets.
