BOTANICALS Back in 2003, when her nine year old daughter suffered a nasty reaction to a shampoo that claimed to be natural, Wendy Stirling was determined to find out why. Her shocking discoveries led to the launch of Botanicals – her own range of truly authentic natural products.

At the time of my daughter’s reaction to the ‘herbal’ shampoo, I believed natural was best and carefully aimed to buy organic products where possible. I discovered that by using clever wording on packaging, manufacturers could make blatantly misleading claims without falling foul of trading standards or advertising standards. Incensed by what we now know as ‘greenwashing’, I began a quest to find authentic, safe natural alternatives, but few were available. This inspired me to start creating my own natural products from my kitchen at home.

What are the important benefits of the Botanicals range?

Botanicals produces ethical skin care using only elements from earth. Carefully selected natural and organic ingredients are used and the entire range is certified organic by The Soil Association, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, not tested on animals and palm oil free. We’re now one of only a handful of companies specialising in skin care products to have its entire range certified organic by the Soil Association.

I believe there is a real need for artisan produced skin care, particularly for those with skin sensitivities. All Botanicals products are blended by hand. How did things move from the kitchen table to manufacture?

I was driven by the belief that I could offer something better.

I love formulating skin care. Peter captures the most compelling realism in his work, often returning to the same spot to depict it throughout different seasons.

Amander Meade went to meet him at the gallery he runs in Uppingham

When did you discover your talent for drawing and painting?

I grew up in Banbury and as a youngster I was always outside exploring the countryside and rivers near my home. I developed a deep love of nature and drew and painted everything I saw. When I was fourteen however, I discovered golf and became fixated on becoming the ‘greatest golfer the world had ever known!’ Although that dream did not quite materialise as planned, I did have my share of tournament success as a professional golfer before being drawn back towards painting.

How would you describe your work and inspiration? ,·P VHOI WDXJKW DQG VSHFLDOLVH LQ ODQGVFDSHV DQG¬ZLOGOLIH PRVWO\ in oils, but also in pastel, watercolour and acrylic. Working from my home studio and painting on site, en plein air, I am constantly inspired by the landscapes to be found here. I’ve lived in Rutland for over forty years and never tire of the beauty of the county. I often make unscheduled stops whilst out in the car to try and capture a particular moment or element of light.

What are your favourite locations to paint?

Well I never lost my childhood fascination with rivers and still love to paint water. The river Welland at Duddington, the Eyebrook Reservoir and the Nene at Water Newton are favourite pieces of inland water and I also paint lots of coastal scenes. I was elected a member of the RSMA (Royal Society of Marine Artists) and exhibit work in their annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries in London every October. I have been opted onto their selection and hanging committee which has been a great honour.

Tell us about your gallery, Peter Barker Fine Art, in Uppingham

My partner Jane and I run the gallery in a lovely spot - Hope’s Yard in Uppingham town centre where we curate a fresh and dazzling selection of figurative paintings by the finest representational artists working in the UK. Work varies dramatically in style but we ensure there is an eclectic mix to appeal to all tastes and budgets with pieces selling from just £150 for an original work. Subjects vary in all mediums from landscapes and still life to portraits. But come and see for yourselves.

How important is the atmosphere in the gallery?

It’s essential. Neither Jane nor I can bear pompous attitudes around art. We work hard to make the gallery a bright, friendly, welcoming space – you won’t find anyone speaking in hushed whispers or feeling intimidated here. It is such a privilege to represent this group of artists, some of whom I consider to be the greats of our time. How wonderful to have them all showing here in Rutland rather than having to travel to London or far beyond to see them exhibit.

Moores Autumn Market Update Following one of the busiest spring / summers on record, we are pleased to say that even as we are going into what is normally a quieter market we still have plenty of buyers looking to move to our part of the world from London and the South East, together with a number of local people that we have sold for who can’t find a suitable property. As ever communication is key and by explaining to viewers that our off market instructions will only move when we find them something, it helps to ensure a smooth and hopefully, stress reduced, experience. The out of area buyers that we are talking to appreciate that we are The Agents In The Know and that therefore they need to register with us, In addition they will often pay a premium to prevent a property coming to the full market but our Vendors in a win win situation.
