Contemplating Greatness: The Broadway Curve and King Solomon’s Temple
Greetings from the East, Brethren! In approaching 2024, I looked forward to a reduced amount of turbulence in the “travels” of my life. The preceding years were fraught with a great deal of juggling of responsibilities and far too few hours to accomplish all that needed to be done. While most of the events which consumed my time in energy during that timeframe have passed, others have presented themselves and this turbulence has merely “leveled out,” at best. Where is the calm I had looked forward to for 2024?
I drive from Ahwatukee to my office on 32 nd Street and Thomas Road every day. Each morning, I am faced with traffic standing still from Elliot and I-10 until I pass University Drive on the 143. This construction has been going on since before I moved into my new office on May 1 st , 2023 and does not appear to be ending anytime this year. I watch the incremental progress of this massive widening of the Broadway Curve involving countless men in various crews and cannot help but see it as a metaphor for a worthwhile life.
King Solomon’s Temple is said to have been one of the most magnificent edifices of its time and would likely have rivaled the most impressive structures of modern times. The construction of the Temple took approximately 7 years to complete through the labor of several thousand (countless) men. I cannot help but wonder how often King Solomon contemplated the day when the labors would be complete. As we have already been informed, it was necessary that there was wisdom to contrive, strength to support and beauty to adorn this incredible achievement… between 8 and 10 centuries before Jesus walked the streets of Jerusalem… the location of King Solomon’s Temple. For me, this strength has come to mean not only the physical ability to perform the work or physically support a construct, but, more importantly for me, the physical and mental stamina to persevere what can, at times, feel like an insurmountable duration of time and exertion.
Whether one seeks to improve the flow of traffic for a major metropolitan population or to glorify the Creator, great tasks require great efforts. As we move into the Spring of 2024, I encourage every brother to contemplate the great things of which they dreamed in the past and of which they hope for their future. Mediocrity is the quality of being average or ordinary. Freemasonry takes good men and makes them better. If we are succeeding at this mission, our Lodge is full of good men who are becoming better… or even great. Great men do great things… not mediocre things. Although I am weary and often desire rest, I am inspired to think that I walk in the steps of King Solomon our first and most excellent Grand Master. If you are weary like me, you are in historically great company. If you find yourself in mediocrity, I encourage you to contrive what comes next for you and then employ your strength to make your mark on this life. Oriental Lodge #20 is an incredible group of friends and brothers of which I am honored to serve as Master for 2024. Thank you all for this wonderful opportunity and for allowing me to labor with you on this incredible Masonic journey.
I desire nothing but greatness for all of us… and maybe I will get some rest this weekend! Fraternally.

The world can be a whirlwind. Work, family, and daily obligations leave us feeling stretched thin. Yet, in the midst of this constant motion, there exists a place of refuge, a brotherhood built on timeless values – Oriental 20 Masonic Lodge.
While life's demands might tempt you to put lodge activities on the back burner, consider this: your continued presence is the very lifeblood of the fraternity. Here's why actively participating in your lodge is not just beneficial for the organization, but for your own personal growth as well:
Strengthening the Bonds of Brotherhood: The essence of Freemasonry lies in the fellowship it fosters. Our lodge meetings provide a sacred space to connect with like-minded brothers who share your commitment to self-improvement and service. Regular interaction strengthens these bonds, creating a network of support and camaraderie that extends far beyond our lodge walls.
A Lifelong Journey of Learning: Freemasonry isn't a stagnant tradition. Each degree, ritual, and symbol holds layers of meaning waiting to be discovered. By actively participating in lodge activities, lectures, and discussions, you embark on a continuous learning journey. Unlocking the wisdom embedded in these practices empowers you to live a more purposeful life.
Sharing Your Gifts, Discovering New Ones: Every Brother brings unique talents and perspectives to the lodge. I call them, “Bringing your Keys to Lodge”. Participating in committees, mentoring new members, or even simply sharing your thoughts during discussions allows you to contribute meaningfully. This not only benefits the lodge, but can also open doors to discovering hidden strengths and leadership qualities within yourself.
A Beacon of Service: Freemasonry has a rich history of giving back to the community. Participating in lodgeorganized charities, volunteering efforts, or even simply mentoring a new member allows you to extend a helping hand and make a real difference in the lives of others. The satisfaction of serving a cause greater than yourself is an undeniable reward.
A Source of Strength and Renewal: Life's challenges are inevitable. Your lodge brothers can be a source of unwavering support during difficult times. Sharing burdens and triumphs within this safe space fosters resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.
By actively participating in your lodge, you become part of something bigger than yourself. You contribute to the legacy of Freemasonry, ensure its continued growth, and enrich your own life in countless ways.
Remember, the lodge needs your presence, your voice, and your unique contributions. Don't hesitate to step forward and rekindle the flame of brotherhood.
Fraternally.

Greetings from the south!
As we embark on a new year, let us not forget the continual progression that many a brother have followed in the footsteps of our tremendous past within our lodge that makes it so marvelous in all its work! From the dinners and intellectual insights to all of our brethren for stepping into new roles and accomplishing leaps and bounds of ritual work. Also, to our worshipful brother and 2023 master of Oriental lodge #20, Justin Stevens for spreading the cement that united us all throughout the year.
I am more than grateful and honored to contribute towards this great work as Junior Warden for the pursuing year. In stepping into this role, it makes me think about the symbol of the plumb and acting in upright behavior. Although ever encompassing in nature I would like to begin with balance.
Simplistic but yet so vast in understanding and implementation of inner work is balance. From our family relationships, inner reflection and to all the organizational roles that life presents to us we are working with balance. One of the building blocks that we have to aid in that upright, honest behavior.
As we go forward in the year I would invite all to ponder and reflect upon the building blocks that we as masons have in our repository. For we have many tools that we can utilize amongst our respective path that build upon the adherence to truthfulness, fairness and all that may shine therein!
Fraternally,

WB Justin Stevens Leads Oriental Lodge in a Banner Year (2023)
Under the leadership of Worshipful Brother Justin Stevens in 2023, Oriental Masonic Lodge experienced a remarkable period of renewed engagement and growth. WB Stevens' vision and dedication proved instrumental in bringing brothers back to the lodge and attracting a new generation of Masons.
Recognizing the importance of fostering a welcoming and familiar atmosphere,
WB Justin championed the return of weekly home-cooked meals at the lodge. This simple act provided a platform for casual interaction and strengthened the bonds of brotherhood. Furthermore, his
call for brothers to include their families in many lodge activities created a more inclusive environment, fostering a sense of community that extended beyond the individual Mason.
WB Justin celebrated the lodge's accomplishments, including receiving the
Master Architect Award at Grand Communication. This recognition of the lodge's excellence in officer proficiency and overall performance served as a source of
pride for the brothers. Additionally, events like the successful Valentine's Day dinner and the return of the traditional Table Lodge event honoring Most Worshipful Brother Rex Hutchins, showcased a commitment to upholding cherished Masonic traditions.
WB Justin understood the importance of providing a well-rounded Masonic experience. He organized educational events to enrich the brothers' understanding of the fraternity's history, philosophy, and rituals.
Furthermore, by scheduling visits to other lodges for degree ceremonies and stated meetings, he fostered collaboration and exposed brothers to different perspectives within Freemasonry.
WB Justin’s leadership culminated in a series of successful dual Entered Apprentice degrees followed by dual Fellowcraft
degrees at the end of the year. This initiative significantly increased the number of new Masons joining Oriental Lodge, ensuring the fraternity's continued growth and vitality.
WB Justin Stevens' tenure as Worshipful Master of Oriental Lodge in 2023 serves as a testament to the power of engaged leadership. Through his commitment to fellowship, tradition, and education, he fostered a vibrant lodge environment that attracted new members and reinvigorated the existing brotherhood. His efforts have secured Oriental Lodge's place as a thriving center of Masonic life for generations to come.

The Masonic Lodge, a haven of brotherhood and self-improvement, thrives on the collective strength of its members. We gather to share knowledge, uphold traditions, and support one another on our Masonic journeys. However, the weight we carry lightens considerably when shared equitably. In this spirit, let's explore the importance of regular attendance and timely communication within the lodge.
Imagine a sturdy chain, each link representing a brother. When all members are present and engaged, the chain is strong, capable of weathering any challenge. But a missing link weakens the entire structure. Every brother, regardless of position, plays a vital role in the lodge's operation. When someone is unexpectedly absent, especially after committing to an officer's role or specific task, the burden falls on others to fill the gap. This can lead to:
Last-minute scrambling: Scrambling to find a replacement for a missing officer or unprepared reciting of ritual creates unnecessary stress and disrupts the flow of the meeting.
Overburdened Brothers: Those who step in to cover for absent members often have their own commitments within the lodge. Taking on additional tasks can lead to burnout and resentment.
A Diminished Experience: Incomplete ceremonies, unprepared ritual work, or a lack of participation can detract from the overall experience for everyone in attendance.
Here's how we can strengthen the chain of brotherhood:
Make attendance a priority: Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, strive to attend lodge meetings regularly. Your presence demonstrates your commitment to the fraternity.
Communicate early: If you know you cannot attend, inform the Senior Warden or Worshipful Master well in advance. This allows time to find a replacement and ensures a smooth flow for the meeting.
Be reliable: If you commit to an officer's role or specific task, see it through. Your reliability fosters trust and makes the lodge function more efficiently.
Ultimately, a thriving lodge is built on the foundation of active participation and mutual respect. By prioritizing attendance and communicating effectively, we ensure that every brother can contribute their strengths and experience a truly enriching Masonic journey. Remember, a strong chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Let's work together to ensure each link in our Masonic chain shines brightly.
