The Town, The People, Their Stories

One year young and growing strong...

We are reminded how quickly time goes by as we complete our first full year of operation! We officially opened to the public in May 2015, and the months that followed proved to be not only successful, but educational. Our efforts to appeal to a new generation of visitors in a more engaging way, while using today’s technology, has been received positively. Based upon our reviews on TripAdvisor, and the feedback we are receiving from groups, we are moving in the right direction.

We knew that in order to be truly successful we couldn’t do it alone. We needed to make sure our product was attractive, authentic, and unique. Building upon the relationships we developed during our renovation process, we have been able to collaborate and cultivate new exhibits in our museum, products in our gift store, and specialized programs for our visitors. All of this is possible by working together with organizations such as the Adams County Historical Society, Land Conservancy of Adams County, and the Evergreen Cemetery Association, in addition to private collectors and historians.

Another treasured relationship is that with The Civil War Trust who has granted us the privilege to present their award-winning battlefield orientation movie, “Gettysburg Animated Map,” as well as other short video presentations.

I would be remiss if I neglected to mention the contributions of my team who have put their hearts and souls into making sure we deliver a first class product as well as excellent customer service.

Their commitment and contribution expands beyond our four walls and into supporting other non-profits, such as the Gettysburg Heritage Education/Research Project – a project tying science and technology together with history. (see page 30) As we plan for the future and grow, we will continue to strengthen and nurture our current relationships – both charitable and private sector – while simultaneously cultivating new ones.

My team and I are very excited and honored to play an active role in the evolution of the Heritage Center experience – one which is good for our visitors, community, staff and partners. We welcome you to visit and stay connected as we continue to evolve and grow.

The Civil War Trust In 2014, the Civil War Trust announced a national campaign to preserve, restore and interpret the fouracre headquarters site of Gen. Robert E. Lee during the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Trust removed modern structures, returned the onsite Mary Thompson House and surrounding grounds to their wartime appearance, and installed an interpretive trail.

Today, the site appears much as it did in July 1863, to memorialize forever the legacy of this land and the sacrifice of the men who marched across it.

Two years ago this project was launched in an effort to increase student interest and achievement in science. By providing authentic lessons and teaching strategies, which reflect the tenets of the Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS) and STEM, students are engaged in experiential learning.
