The Sandals Foundation aims to help fulfil the promise of the Caribbean community through investment in sustainable projects in education; environment and community which improve people’s lives and preserve their natural surroundings. Growing up in the birthplace of Reggae Music, Trench Town, St. Andrew, Egbert Hamilton realized his passion to become a master craftsman of alabaster at the age of nineteen.

Since 1969, Hamilton has taught himself the art of cutting and polishing gypsum that he sources from Bull Bay, in the hills of East Rural St. Andrew, into unique trinkets and keepsakes. Over the years, his workshop in Trench Town became home to many youths of the community where Hamilton teaches them the art of mastering alabaster.

This master artist has a passion for community and uses his crafting talent to help uplift people. He shared his passion with the local Fort Augusta Women’s Correctional Facility, teaching prisoners how to make craft items. He has been passing on his trade to his children, having taught them the craft in after school sessions in the workshop throughout the years. Through growing demand, Hamilton has been able to hire workers from the community. He now dreams of building his shop with more workbenches to create more space to host training workshops for more youth in the community.

Head, heart and hands make Antillean Charm. Symerna Blake is the self-taught proud artisan owner of this boutique design business based in St. Catherine, Jamaica. Antillean Charm is an idea that has been germinating for at least 10 years. Blake started the business out of a burning desire to create. During her years in Corporate Jamaica, she would use her vacation days to conduct research, experiment and hang out in the workshops of veteran artists. With that knowledge, she now uses her talent to create 3D Ceramic Flora and Fauna Shadow Boxes by using ceramic sculpture mounted in solid wood shadow boxes for a 3D experience.

Being a concept-led business forces Antillean Charm to think ahead. She is already developing new collections that will utilise completely different materials and techniques. Craftquest’s founding artist, Murdena Redden, was introduced to the ceramics industry in her late teens by one of Jamaica’s pioneers in the industry - Peter Cave. Drawing inspiration from nature and everyday life, Murdena has, for over 40 years, meticulously honed her skills in the art of modelling ceramic figurines to become the Caribbean’s premier Artist in this specialty.

Murdena, being an accomplished dressmaker applied the same techniques and began experimenting with sculpting small female ceramic figures, depicting various movements and scenes. Her beautiful and exquisite ceramic figurines, depicting various aspects of Caribbean life, are excellent collectors’ items. Craftquest’s dolls are 100% handmade from Jamaican brown clay and are bisque and glaze fired for added strength and aesthetics. They tell a story of a woman who decided not to give up when all odds were stacked against her.

Today, Murdena’s daughter Aretha, a brilliant artist herself, carries on her mother’s legacy with the trademark “Murds Dolls”. Each piece is handmade and one of a kind. For over 20 years, Cheryl Whytehead, creator and designer for Devine Treasures has been making women happy with her signature clutches, handbags, sandals and accessories that can be customized for her clients. Glengoffe Straw Weavers Distributed by Beeny Bud

“If you don’t know your history, you don’t know your future,” echoes the voices of the straw weavers in the small farming community of Glengoffe in St. Catherine. Since there has been no real development in the community since 1969, the Glengoffe CDC in 1995 went in with a concept of building the community to develop the minds of the young people so that they could unite to create employment opportunities through straw weaving.

Glengoffe has a long tradition of making straw products as the Jippi Jappa straw grows there. Most weavers learnt from older family members and neighbours. Within the community there are people, mainly men, who find and clean the straw and sell it to the weavers. The weavers then strip and prepare it for making products.

Some of them sell woven belts for bags and hats or make the core of the fan and then pass it on to artisans such as McIntosh Craft and other companies to finish the item.

Each person works from home most of the time but there is a production group that meets at the CDC building once or twice per week to work together. Each product you buy embodies the charm, history and dream of this community.

“I use the art form known as decoupage to decorate stones.

"Decoupage" is a French word which means - to decorate with paper.� – Simone Andrade If self-taught artisan, Simone Andrade ruled the world, people would enjoy the creativity of all art forms including the decoupage decorated stones of Pretty Things. Simone uses stones that she finds on the beach and covers them with recycled material and images printed on paper with catchy phrases such as "Roots Rock Reggae" and "Jamrock". She believes every customer deserves a piece of the rock. This unique touch of creativity emerged when Simone felt the need to resign from her nine to five job twenty-seven years ago to care for her daughter. In order to provide for her daughter, she needed to earn from home. So, she took an old art form, added her creative touch, and voila the beginning of Pretty Things.

The challenges in marketing the decoupage-decorated stones sold by Pretty Things have not hindered the growth of their clientele. Her passion for art and novel technique radiates through her work.

This small group of blind and visually impaired artisans specialize in the time-honoured art of caning to produce beautiful handcrafted wicker and cord furnishings that marry the traditional with the contemporary.

Trench Town is known for many things, with the most notable being Bob Marley and his music. In a similar way, Garfield Williams is making a name for the south St Andrew community in another art form through the Trench Town Ceramics & Art Centre.

Ceramics for Williams can be considered as a family talent. He learned the art of ceramics from his mother as he watched her make them while the two lived in Toronto, Canada. After moving to Jamaica, he decided to continue practicing the art form and aspired to teach the young people in the Trench Town community a marketable skill.

Trench Town Ceramics was initially a community outreach programme designed to engage young people who live there. Now, it thrives as a noteworthy art business providing beautiful clay-based pieces inspired

Jacqueline Prendergast has a unique love for craft and photography. After travelling around the island of Jamaica, Jacqueline Prendergast, Designer and Manager of Scriptec acquired hundreds of beautiful photographs.

Then she thought,“How can I transform photography into craft that represents my country or merge the two?� The thought inspired a creative idea to use local mahoe and cedar wood to create a line of wooden trays, pictures in frames, placemats and coasters, embellished with photographs taken all over the island.

Handcrafted, hand painted, happiness, are all words that are used to describe Robin Decomas’ Bette of Jamaica designs.

For forty years Bette’s hand painted, hand crafted batik goods made from beeswax, cotton fabric and natural dyes have been gifted with joy to many a happy recipient. Creativity and business run in the family with Robin’s mother who was an artist that loved to create new things. Being taught the craft, Robin let the fun of creating motivate her to continue her craft.

Much time and effort goes into creating quality, handmade crafts. Bette of Jamaica wants the entire world to understand this about all handmade products. She wants her customers to enjoy wearing and using her batik goods, a craft that she promises to continue for forty more glorious years.
