From the editor Ladies, spring is here and if any of you are as crazy as me, you might be embarking on a new plan to feel better and move more. Here’s what I have learnt so far. Healthy (and tasty) versions of treats don’t exist: Cutting the unnecessary amount of sugar was a given but going cold turkey was a terrible idea. I had withdrawals, grouchiness and a lack of brain function. So much so that rather than having ice cream after dinner, I decided to have natural Greek yoghurt with 80% dark chocolate crushed into it. It was completely unsatisfying and hardly edible — nothing like the Oreo McFlurry I was craving. I recommend not trying to find a healthy (and tasty!) version of any treat you love because it does not exist. Sore muscles are worse than hangovers: Sore muscles are one thing, but sore calf muscles? I thought my time on earth was coming to an end. I couldn’t walk properly for a whole week after a 30-minute high-intensity jumping workout — and three of those days I had to stay home. During that week everyone in my path was made painfully aware of the state I was in, and I received much sympathy as a result. Sympathy is good at helping to ease the pain, so I would encourage you to seek it from all available sources. Exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise is the best kind: There’s nothing more boring than walking on a treadmill, so, I suggest trying new classes, maybe even a twerking one. Before you think it’s only for young folk or morally corrupt, think again. Women of all shapes and sizes, and ages, were there shaking what their mama gave them. Wiggling, jiggling, bouncing and giggling is all strongly encouraged too! I highly advise doing exercise that doesn't feel like exercise because you’ll get a workout in without even realising it!

his is the story of how I nearly had a brain aneurysm. Kind of.

It started like most Saturdays do. I rolled out of bed, tripped over the pair of heels that I had lazily left by my bed the night before and caught my reflection in the mirror. Messy hair: check. Smudged makeup: check. And… a red eye? My left eye was noticeably red and blood-shot. Like I’d been awake for six days straight, running on nothing but coffee and Redbull. That’s odd? I must have rubbed it in my sleep. It will be fine in a few hours. But it worsened. By mid afternoon, my eye was an angry red and was quite painful. And every person I crossed paths with felt obligated to point it out, like I had no idea. Aren’t people great? I turned to the only person I knew I could trust in my search for answers. A source of wisdom and knowledge who had always been there when I needed him most: Google. Well, here’s the thing about Google: seek and you shall find. So, when I went looking for a dire diagnosis, you better believe I found it.

Brain aneurysm. The further I searched, the closer I was to death. The symptoms were all there. Blurry vision? Yep, if I squint and look to the side a little, my vision was undoubtedly blurry. Headache? Yep. Although that could be self-induced… Dizziness? I mean sure, I could be a little light-headed. I had a brain aneurysm and I was going to die. What a way to go. I did what any dead man walking would do in this scenario and booked an appointment with my GP. Just to confirm what Dr Google had already diagnosed. I turned up to my appointment, sat across from the doctor and he took a look at my eye. I was prepared for what he was about to tell me. I knew what was coming.

“It’s just a mild conjunctivitis, nothing to worry about,” he announced ever-so-nonchalantly.“Take these antibiotics and it will be gone in a few days.” Wait, what? Conjunctivitis? I didn’t have a brain aneurysm and I wasn’t dying. I was simply suffering the consequences of being too lazy to wash my eye makeup before I went to bed.

Amy Tobin doesn’t look like your average athlete. In fact, there is nothing average about her at all. Amy has cerebral palsy, is a level 4 quadriplegic and is in a wheelchair. But don’t let that bother you, because she certainly hasn’t. Words by Hayley Bogaard

"ORDINARY ISN’T VERY t's a Sunday afternoon, mid-August last year and a picturesque day on Brisbane’s South Bank. Runners from around the country are crossing the finish line in the Bridge to Brisbane, stopping to double over and catch their breath, high-five their friends and wipe the beads of sweat from their face. One of those competitors is Gold Coaster Amy Tobin. She is exhausted and pain grips every one of her limbs. Every cell in her body screams at her to stop, to collapse, to give up. But she persists, her family by her side, cheering her on. Slowly, steadily and with inspired determination, she crosses the finish line and collapses with unbridled emotion, relief and fatigue. But this is not an ordinary story of a girl finishing a marathon. In fact, just ask Amy and she’ll tell you,“Ordinary isn’t very extraordinary.” The odds were always stacked. From the moment that Amy Tobin, 24, was born, the odds were stacked against her. Born prematurely, at only 26 weeks, she fought for every breath, every yawn, every tiny little hiccup. Without the availability of adequate technology to care for premature babies, her condition deteriorated and she suffered a grade two brain haemorrhage, which left her quadriplegic. It wasn’t until Amy was a little older that her parents, Mark and Lorraine, were given a name for her condition: cerebral palsy. The doctors explained that while her condition now had a label, it was difficult to determine what limitations that would impose on her life. While the doctors couldn’t give Mark and Lorraine the answers they so desperately sought, they were confident of one thing: Amy would never talk and never walk. Well, they didn’t know Amy Tobin. Growing up with four brothers, as well as other children that her mother fostered, Amy was never short of someone to play with, laugh with or learn from and her wheelchair became extrinsic to her identity. “I knew I was different, but I also knew there was a way around it,” Amy said.“For me, the diagnosis was just a name.” And despite the doctor’s dire predictions, Amy grew to be a vivacious, strong-willed and charismatically chatty young girl.

An odd-shaped piece that just didn’t fit. Amy arrived at her first day of high school nervous, overwhelmed but determined. A sprawling concrete jungle lay before her; entangled with strange faces, shrill bells and staggering expectations. With the same nerves as her peers around her, she took a deep breath and prepared to face the new chapter in her life. But unlike her peers, Amy faced a unique challenge before she could even worry about homework, boys and PE classes: stairs. Before a time of disability access building standards and mandatory wheelchair accessibility codes, stairs were just the first steep step in Amy’s high school experience. School was a giant puzzle and she was an odd-shaped piece that just didn’t fit. The trials and tribulations were the same: balancing homework with a social life, the burgeoning pressures of social media and the all-pervading effects of puberty. But the everyday battles to fit in the neatly defined box that society had laid before her were demanding and took a toll on an impressionable young girl. “School was a very isolating place. People just saw me as a person in a wheelchair. I didn’t have a name, or a face,” she said. “They saw the chair before they saw me. I found it very hard to be accepted for the person I was and I found that I wasn’t living my life for me, I was always trying to live up to someone else’s expectations.” Teachers and staff were unequipped to support Amy, both academically and physically, and this often contributed to her feelings of seclusion. Despite being surrounded by an ocean of people, faces and noises, she was alone and drowning in silence. “It was so hard because I was excluded, but I was also over-included,” she said. “Everything was made out to be a big deal if I was doing something. I couldn’t just be treated the same way as the other students. It was humiliating.” But with her relentless determination, she finished high school and relished the opportunities that university would bring. Little did she know, university was to be far, far worse. “I hit one of my lowest points. I just didn’t fit anywhere; I didn’t fit in any social box, despite how desperately I wanted to,” she said. “I lost my drive, my focus, my passion. There were some really dark moments where I wondered why I even bothered, why I was even alive, what the point was any more.” It was at that stage that Amy began working for a fundraising and marketing business, raising money and resources for charities including The House with No Steps, Mission Australia and Cerebral Palsy Alliance. And it was here that the match was struck, and her true love for helping others began to burn brightly. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and there were still some major hurdles for Amy to overcome.

The obstinate third party.

She walked.

Pain was an obstinate third party in Amy’s daily life. Some days were better and she felt the smile relax across her face and other days were worse, the forced grimace masking the pain.

Decked out in a racer-back singlet, workout tights and brand new black Nikes, Amy wheeled into EMF at Pacific Fair like any other athlete, ready to train. There, she met her trainer Joel Bradford, and the real work began.

Her whole life had been punctuated by medical procedures and surgeries. She had undergone more than 10 major procedures already, including hip realignment surgery, lengthening surgeries and spinal injections. So, when Amy was admitted to hospital in severe pain in March 2017, it was not something new for her. Amy was hospitalised for four weeks. Doctors initially diagnosed her with appendicitis and she underwent surgery to have her appendix removed, however, the pain persisted. It wasn’t unusual for her condition to fluctuate, deteriorating quite quickly at times. After Amy pleaded with the doctors to find a solution — any solution — to ease her suffering, they reluctantly presented her with one last option: a gastrocnemius release.

For three months Amy completed extensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation with her long-time physiotherapist, Luke Newman, conditioning coach, Luke Nivison-Smith and exercise physiologist, Nathan Brischetto as well as almost daily workouts with Joel. Her resilience persevered, her strength grew and yet again, she defied the doctor’s diagnosis. With the assistance of a walker, Amy did what she was told she wouldn’t: she walked. The training was gruelling, she pushed her body to its limits and, at times, it retaliated with crippling pain. But with the support of her team, she pushed past the barriers and stayed focused on her goal. Just three short months after her surgery, Amy stepped up in her walker and joined the starting line for the Bridge to Brisbane. Five kilometres, plenty of hills and a few tears later, she crossed the finish line to the triumphant cheers of her team.

The invasive surgery involved reconstructing and rebuilding one of the major muscles in her calves. It would allow Amy’s feet to finally touch the ground, something she had never experienced. “I had a lot of pain in my legs. The muscles in my feet were so bent and deformed that I’d never actually been able to place my feet on the ground,” she said. Her surgeon was hesitant as it was a procedure usually only performed on considerably fit and strong candidates. He gave her just a 20% chance of success. And, as they had done so many years before, the doctors warned Amy that she would never walk again. “I couldn’t walk much before the surgery but losing just that little bit was losing a lot,” she said. But despite every odd stacked against her, she persisted and underwent the surgery. Recovery was painstakingly slow, physically demanding and fraught with fear. But Amy knew that it was going to take far more than the skilful hands of the surgeons and persistence of her physical therapists to make the surgery a success. It had to come from within. It was up to her to make the difference, and that’s exactly what she did. “Three months after the surgery, I had a family friend who was struggling to raise money for their son who had cerebral palsy and needed specialist equipment so, crazy as it was, I signed up for the Bridge to Brisbane!” she said.

In the process Amy raised much needed funds for Noah Flynn, a four-year-old boy who required a specialist activity seat that would allow him to join in on play and learning with his friends when he started school the next year. Amy realised that this was where her odd-shaped puzzle piece fit perfectly: helping children who were in a place of need as she once was — and giving them opportunities she’d never had. “It’s taken intense training to do it, I’ve pretty much changed my whole life to commit to doing this,” she said. “But just seeing the benefits to the kids, them getting the equipment — it makes it all worth it. I’m proud that the equipment and funds are coming from me, and not just from some foundation. “They can say that we got this from one single person. I just wanted to make a difference, despite the fact that I have my own struggles.” And a difference is exactly what she made. Following the Bridge to Brisbane, Amy completed another five kilometre walk in the Western Sydney Marathon, raising funds for twins Frankie and Ivy Archard who had disabilities requiring extensive medical care. She then tackled the Auckland Marathon for William Dickinson, a young boy who desperately needed surgery in the United States to save his leg from amputation. The Commonwealth Games Gold Run followed that, and then the Gold Coast Marathon. Most recently, Amy completed 10 kilometres at the Seven Sunshine Coast Marathon, securing a personal best time of one hour 49 minutes and 22 seconds. Every step along the way was a fight. A physical fight, a fight for the children she was supporting and a fight to prove every critic, every

But at every moment of reckoning and every second of hesitation where the urge to succumb to the exhaustion, emotion and severe pain overwhelmed her, she saw the faces of the children she was helping and didn’t waver in a single step. “It was hard, sometimes I just wanted to collapse on the spot, but I couldn’t,” she said. “It’s not just about me; it’s about the kids. I don’t have a choice to give up because they don’t have a choice to have the conditions and needs that they do.” Having already achieved so much, beaten so many odds and helped so many others, she could have easily rested, content that she so had accomplished more than many able-bodied people ever would. But that’s not Amy Tobin. Rather, Amy set the bar to dizzying new heights. She applied to compete in the 2018 Honolulu International Marathon. All 42 kilometres of it. A label that fits just right. In December this year, Amy will travel to Hawaii with her team, including dedicated coach Trent Saul and trainer Joel, to compete in one of the most gruelling and demanding marathons in the world. The Honolulu International Marathon is 42.2 kilometres and includes one of the steepest inclines of any marathon in the world. And, as she has done since birth, Amy is challenging the status quo in a big way. “As far as we know, I’m the only profoundly disabled person to compete in the event from Queensland, or even from anywhere in Australia,” she said. She will be raising funds for I Can I Will Children’s Charity, whose mission is to promote inclusion and reduce bullying for youth suicide prevention in children with special needs. It’s a cause close to her heart and a place of darkness she knows all too well. But from that darkness has come a bright, enduring light. “I guess I didn’t really want to tell people what it was like to live with this, because it is very isolating,” she said. “People don’t understand unless they know someone, or they have it themselves. But now people see me in the community and they ask how I’m going and they know me as the one who does the marathons and I love that!” Despite facing criticism and scepticism, with people disparaging her efforts as futile due to the profound nature of her conditions, Amy isn’t about to let that stand in her way. “Everything is labelled these days, we’ve all got some sort of label and I guess this is just mine. The diagnosis is just a word, it’s nothing more than that!” she said. So, come December 9, when Amy wheels her specially designed racing chair up to the starting line in Honolulu beside her competitors, her breath steady and rhythmic, her eyes narrowed with unwavering focus and every cell in her body alert for the sound of the starting gun, it won’t be as someone in a wheelchair, or a person with a disability. It will be as an athlete. And that is a label that fits just right.

Every twist, turn and hill They say that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, and one person who has been there since Amy’s very first step has been personal trainer, Joel Bradford. Despite having never worked with clients with Cerebral Palsy before meeting Amy, Joel was inspired by her determination and embraced the challenge. “It’s a very long process, especially with cerebral palsy,” he said. “You ask some doctors and they’ll say it would never happen. But the progress we’ve seen with her just in the last six months, it’s just incredible.”

How to spring-clean your wardrobe without having a

total meltdown

Now is the perfect time to throw away the old and make way for the new — the Get it girls are here to share their wisdom (and lessons learned!) with you so your wardrobe clear out is successful rather than stressful

Do it in sections: The worst way you can start a wardrobe clean out is to take every item out of your drawers, shelves and wardrobe and throw it in a big pile on the ground. This will overwhelm you and is more likely to inspire you to flop onto the pile with wine in hand rather than sort it. Instead, do it a drawer, shelf and wardrobe section at a time. Allocate three piles: Keep, chuck and give away. If you’ve worn it in the last six months to one year, and will wear it again, keep it. If you’ll never wear it again or it no longer fits but is still in great quality, put it in the giveaway pile. If the clothing item is well past it’s expiry date, chuck it! Try on but only what will fit: Stylists will tell you to go shopping in your wardrobe, which we totally advise! Try on, mix and match items you haven’t seen in a while, and there you have it — new outfits! However, what they don’t tell you is that you should not try on year’s old items that you know won’t fit. Like the jean shorts you kept from a much slimmer you of three years ago that

won’t even go half way up one thigh now. All that does is leave you thinking how you’ve let yourself go or what diet you can start first thing tomorrow to get back into them for summer. Chuck or charity pile them! Check in with your personal style: Not every item in your wardrobe will match your current style. Perhaps your style has become more mature and classier, boho/hippy or sexier in your singledom.Your wardrobe should reflect the clothing you’ll wear. Of course, you’ll need to keep a few items for occasion wear, where your style must be dulled down, but for the most part, your wardrobe should reflect who you are right now. Organise yourself: As you put items back in your wardrobe that you’re keeping, ensure all item types go together i.e. a drawer for pants, a drawer for gym gear, and sections of the wardrobe for jackets, dresses and tops. Or, in your wardrobe section, you can organise your items into colour coordination. That way, when you

go into your cupboard to find a specific item, you’ll know where it is and won’t have to upturn everything in search of that evasive tee. Wine, music and a girlfriend will help: Turn a chore into a fun time with any one (or all three) of these things.You should be excited about the possibilities of your wardrobe and have fun in the process! Make a shopping list: Here comes the best part — SHOPPING! As you sort your things, you’ll find items you’re in need of. Make a list. Invest in some good quality basics, multi-use items and staples. Then, once you have the items you need, buy some you want! After all that hard work and sorting, you deserve to treat yourself girlfriend! Organise a clothing swap evening: Give your copy of Get it to your girlfriends and encourage them to follow this list. Once all of you have your giveaway piles, arrange an evening with wine and a cheese platter and go through each other’s piles. Whatever no one wants at the end of the evening, donate to charity!

I was extremely shocked to learn how many of the women in the prison system were seeking refuge from violence happening within their home. These women were committing crimes to escape. In early 2015, a personal connection of mine was tragically killed by her ex-partner resulting in not only her death but also the death of her unborn baby as she was pregnant. The extended grief I saw through my personal network of her passing really opened my eyes to the ripple effect domestic violence has on the community. I wanted to do something more than just light another candle and organised a small lunch (that turned into something much bigger) to raise some money and through co-ordinating it I met Manuela. We formed a strong personal relationship built on a common goal to make a significant difference to families affected by DV and the community in general.” Julia McKenna, Chief Financial Officer/Director “I’ve always had a social conscience, even growing up. However, career and family took the forefront of my life for many years, and I had less time for offering my services voluntarily. That was until, whilst my family and I were living in Singapore, one of my family members, Allison BadenClay, was murdered by her husband. I happened across a program online, which lead to me becoming a volunteer with Manuela. From there I put together my first “Sanctuary”,with my husband, children and friends rallying around. Why the number of high risk pregnancies is on the rise Everything you need to know about high-risk pregnancies with Dr Andrew Cary n case you haven’t heard, 40s are the new 20s. Women are spending longer focusing on their careers and traveling, opting to settle with a partner or have children later in life. In addition to women choosing to have babies after 40, there are also advances in medical treatments and screening tests that support women in pregnancy. Because of these factors, more high-risk pregnancies are presented to doctors like Dr Andrew Cary who has a strong interest and commitment in this area. “High-risk pregnancy can be identified before a woman is pregnant,” Dr Cary says. “The diagnosis is based on a woman’s chances of having complications that could affect the foetus or mother during pregnancy, and may result in pre-term delivery.” Women are considered high-risk if they are pregnant with multiples; are aged over 40 years; have a history of miscarriage; had difficulty falling pregnant; have uterine abnormalities or

other female reproductive disorders; or have certain existing health conditions. While some of these factors can help identify who is considered high risk, it’s not always evident from the outset. “A healthy woman who fell pregnant naturally may be classed as low risk at first, but part of the antenatal care involves

watching for conditions that change this risk such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia,” Dr Cary says. Assisted reproduction such as IVF is more advanced than ever and it’s important to note that these pregnancies are classed as high risk automatically. “There is an association with placental issues. Most women who conceive through IVF go on to have a healthy and normal pregnancy but women who have had multiple IVF cycles before falling pregnant may be followed more closely during their pregnancy,” Dr Cary says. Expert care is vital in high-risk pregnancies and altered as mum and bub need it. “This could include more frequent appointments, earlier monitoring, additional ultrasound scans and assessments and hospitalisation for close monitoring,” Dr Cary says. While pregnancy is naturally a time of increased anxiety for women and couples, this is particularly the case for first time mums and women who have experienced complications in previous pregnancies. “My aim is to work closely with women and their partners every step of the way and to monitor mum and bub to ensure the best outcome — a healthy mother and baby,” Dr Cary says. MY ALARM GOES OFF AT… 6am but I usually wake up just before my alarm and head straight out the door for a beautiful walk along the beach promenade from Broadbeach to Main Beach before breakfast. I think it is the best way to start the day as it gets my body moving and mind focused. A TYPICAL DAY… Client check-in calls, reviewing nutrition and exercise plans, and keeping my clients motivated and on track, providing as much support as they need with the psychological aspect of weight loss. ABOUT MY BUSINESS… As well as nutrition and exercise, my coaching program focuses on helping clients overcome the psychological barriers to weight loss such as emotional eating, self-sabotage, relationships with food, negative self-perception and more. What I deal with is so incredibly common that almost every single dieter will experience it, but not many professionals address it! HOW I GOT HERE… I started training quite young, driven by my own insecurities, and over time I became fitter and stronger, but not leaner. After personal training it became apparent to me that exercise was not the key to weight loss. No matter who you are, you cannot out-exercise a bad diet. I also tried everything under the sun to lose weight, made countless attempts, and white-knuckled my way through hunger and

cravings. I realised I just couldn’t stick to diets and felt I had no willpower. MY PURPOSE… After working as a weight loss coach, I realised that so many people had the same struggles; everyone is caught up in the science of weight loss — the calories in v. the calories out. No one was dealing with people’s heads! After my Psychology and Business degrees, I put together a program that could help. I saw that clients only yielded great success if and only if their mindset was in the right place. Psychological issues were the key to determining successful weight loss. So, I branched out on my own and now work with more and more people with all different issues, some severe, some milder, but a common theme remains — once someone’s mindset is in the right place, weight loss is easy. THE BEST PART… Helping a client! When a client successfully changes their mentality, attitudes and perceptions, they will conquer emotional eating, bingeing, cravings, yo-yo dieting, and a miserable relationship with food — and their own body. Conquering these leads to a life filled with happiness and body confidence, a positive relationship with food, and an ease in achieving and maintaining their ideal weight and optimal health. SOMETHING SURPRISING… Clients are always surprised at how much their own thoughts and patterns have made weight loss hard, and how easy it can be!

THE WORST PART… When people do not accept responsibility for their weight. When we do not accept responsibility, we feel like the victim or a product of our circumstance. This is (paradoxically) a comfortable place for a lot of people to be because they feel unworthy of happiness, or because it means they can blame other people, situations or circumstances for not having the results they want. FUTURE PLANS… I have just finished writing a book that covers things like emotional eating, self-sabotage, improving relationships with food, as well as giving flexible guidelines for eating and exercising. I will be looking for publishers soon and I would love to give talks, run seminars, and do presentations as well. AFTER WORK… I love taking a bath with some Epsom salts in it. I find it so relaxing and it makes me sleep like a baby! HOW I FIND BALANCE… I plan out my day the night before and make sure I have time to fit in my ‘non-negotiables’ — AKA my morning walk, meal-prep, gym session, reading and downtime. I know I need these in order take care of myself, and to stay focused and on track. I always say, if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anything else. o, you’ve just gone down the rabbit hole on Instagram again, and see all your friends, colleagues and competitors totally killing it. Their feeds feature their clean, wholesome children, curated holidays, luxe lives and what appears to be an alternate reality. Somehow, it leaves you feeling a little hollow… like maybe you don’t have it all together… and that it’s not okay. But hey, who’s going to listen, right? No one likes a whiner, so you put your big girl panties on and deal with it. It’s time to post your own sparkly pic and suck it up Princess! But surely, you’re not alone? We’re living in a global village, yet often feel more isolated and alone than ever. Surely, there must be more who feel this way! And you’re right, there are. The recent high-profile deaths of designer Kate Spade and world-travelling chef Anthony Bourdain highlight again that mental health is everyone’s issue and it’s time to tear off the band-aid, get vulnerable and say,‘No, I’m not okay.’ It doesn’t matter how successful, wealthy or popular we are, emotional stress and strain is everywhere, from celebrity to locals in business. September annually features the international R U OK Day and aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and where to turn if you need help. It’s sad that we need a special day to highlight awareness for what should be an everyday care issue. Writing Financial Secrets Revealed allowed me to intimately interview 20 amazing people who were open and vulnerable and shared their personal and September 2018

financial journeys with me. And guess what? We’re not all okay. But even that’s okay. Successful UK-based financial adviser and BBC regular David Braithwaite shared his battles with stress and anxiety. He often wanted to give up and felt unworthy of the position he found himself in. I loved the takeout that he shared that “we need to live in a world where we make it safe to be vulnerable with each other and share what’s really going on for all of us. We’re all in this together.” Having heard David deliver a keynote in Vancouver to 14,000 people, I was privileged to be with him a year later when someone from that audience met him and shared what an impact his story had on his life. It was an incredibly touching moment, and got me a little misty-eyed, and to thinking. I come from a family where mental illness abounds, and personally suffered depression after having my children and returning to work, studying for my Masters degree, owner-building our third home and growing a business. To be honest, this is the first time I’ve publicly admitted that, because I too still feel that there’s a stigma to it. I don’t want to be pitied or viewed as a victim. Only a handful of people knew that I was ever on anti-depressants, and I’m a chronic oversharer! Former Gold Coast local and investigative journalist Tanya Targett shared the stories of negative money lessons she’d learned in childhood from her nowestranged family and her personal journey to flee a financially and emotionally abusive relationship. When she realised that her 34

mental and physical health were impacted, and this was no place to raise her daughter, she bravely did what needed to be done and started over from scratch. Her journey is a ‘rags to riches’ tale that needs to be shared. The high-profile murder of Brisbane mother Alison Baden-Clay and the court case that followed was the catalyst that finally encouraged Tanya to move on. Financial and emotional abuse featured strongly in Alison’s case and the “DO Something” campaign is now in full swing. Another story features Palm Beachbased singing teacher, marriage celebrant and former DJ, Ann-Marie Von Douglas. Lovely Annie fell madly in love with a German Count, was swept off her feet and lived a jet-set lifestyle delivering luxury cars throughout Europe before returning to Australia to have her children. Annie abdicated all financial decisions to her now ex-husband and trusted that he was doing the right thing. Annie now makes ends meet on the Centrelink Pension. It’s not often you come across someone who can manage going from a champagne to a beer budget with the grace that this lovely lady does. So, I know it’s not just me who feels it. It’s time to get real with each other. Grab your favourite girlfriend, family member, entrepreneur, mentor or buddy and get talking about what’s really going on. Don’t just share the highlights reel, although you totally must celebrate the wins! But make sure you include the bloopers, the struggles, the anguish and tears. After all, isn’t that what makes us all part of this big, crazy human family?


Spring checklist for green thumbs

As we know all too well, spring on the Gold Coast can be one of the driest times of the year, so we’ve called in Kyle Casey from KC’s Irrigation Services to give us all the dirt on keeping your garden thriving during the dry spell! 4 Clear the weeds During the cooler seasons, most of your garden favourites would have reserved energy for growth and lay in a state of dormancy until the warmer weather arrives, but not those pesky weeds! Start by clearing them out to prevent them diminishing your garden beds of nutrients and competing with your muchloved plants for space and sunlight!

4 Perfect pruning To promote growth in your garden, now is the best time to remove dead plants and trees to make way for your plants that are still thriving, and for any new additions. Prune any dead flowers, twigs or wilted leaves from your existing plants and trees to ensure prolonged flowering during spring. But don’t get carried away — remember,

you’re not Edward Scissorhands! 4 Fertilise your garden beds When was the last time you added fresh mulch, or fertiliser, to your garden beds? A lot of properties around the Gold Coast are built on sand, or nutrient-depleted soils, which means your plants will not receive the appropriate nutrients they need to flourish. Mulch is my preferred go-to, however, if you do use synthetic fertilisers remember to water them into the soil. 4 Don’t forget your turf Let’s face it — there’s no point in having a lush, thriving garden if it is surrounded by bare, dusty ground! If your lawn has seen better days, you may need to reseed, or returf it — but overall, the key to keeping your lawn in top condition is to keep it properly hydrated. 4 Water, water, water! Whether laying seed, planting seedlings, or just maintaining your established gardens — always make sure you provide adequate hydration to your plants. While hand watering can be therapeutic, most of the time it does not provide full coverage to garden and turf areas, and is a costly approach to keep your garden thriving. Therefore, more people are opting to have irrigation systems installed. Run through an automated controller, you can set and forget your garden and turf watering times to ensure that your entire outdoor area receives the adequate hydration it needs — allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor paradise!

e are all in this thing called ‘life’ together, and what a ride we are on! In the middle of the madness and mayhem, the peaks and troughs, the lessons and laughter, and the triumphs and tragedy, is the beautiful and complex you. You are the writer of your story and the CEO of your life. It’s extraordinary, sometimes boring and occasionally heartbreaking. You start new projects, change direction and end things you thought would last forever. Then you rebuild and do it all over again. To set yourself up for a successful, resilient and happy life, you should have integrated strategies that support your emotional wellbeing. Then, when the inevitable curveballs come, you are ready for them. What are your non-negotiables when it comes to looking after you? Here are 10 life must-haves (LMH) to help keep you balanced. LMH #1: Sandy Feet. This is about having a place that you can visit which feeds you emotionally, physically and spiritually. It might be the beach, the hills, or somewhere else. In our fastpaced world, it’s important to have a special place to refuel and reflect. Where do you go to look after you? LMH #2: Adventure. The human spirit needs comfort. It also needs newness. Think about the moments that make your heart beat faster — going on an adventure, such as travelling abroad, is often a great way to learn about yourself. New experiences show us things about ourselves and the world we live in. Where will you go on your next adventure? LMH #3: Messy Moments. There are days when you should allow yourself to let everything go, whatever that means to you. It’s impossible to be a high-performing person who always has it September 2018

together all of the time. Sometimes life is messy. Do you have a strategy for looking after the messy you? LMH #4: Kindness. Being kind to others is great for your health and your actions nearly always find their way back to you. We associate kindness with trust, compassion and integrity. How can you be consciously kind every day? LMH #5: Stillness. The body and the mind both need physical activity to be healthy. However, it is just as important, if not more so, to allow your body to be still. It is in these moments that your body heals, your head processes and your heart feels. What would be different for you if stillness was part of your everyday life? LMH #6: A Grateful Heart. There are gratitude books and journals everywhere you look and that’s because valuing a grateful mindset changes how you think and feel. Gratitude brings perspective, allows us to say thank you and recognises the aspects in our lives that are bringing happiness and opportunities to learn. What are you grateful for? LMH #7: Patting Dogs. We need to find ways to connect with our communities. It’s important that we feel like we are part of something bigger than just ourselves. When you stop and pat someone’s dog, it creates an opportunity for conversation. Okay, so you might not love dogs… but there are lots of ways to be in the moment with someone else. How do you connect with people around you? LMH #8: Hugging. Okay. People generally fall into one of two categories: huggers and non-huggers. Hugging communicates so much about what we are feeling. A hug can be comforting, or it can say ‘I’m sorry’, ‘I love you’, ‘I’m so happy to meet you’ or even ask, ‘Are you ok?’ Hugging releases oxytocin from your brain which makes In our fastyou feel good, it’s the most natural mood paced world, elevator around. Nearly two-thirds of Australian adults and 1 in 4 children under age 18 are overweight or obese. These people are at a much greater risk of long-term related ill-health like type 2 diabetes. Other conditions related to our lifestyle and nutrition include high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, some cancers, Polycystic Ovary Disease, and Alzheimer’s. Despite government programs, these chronic diseases are becoming more prevalent. Present management After diagnosis of a chronic disease like obesity or diabetes, the recommendations are to lose weight, exercise more, take medications or have surgery. All sorts of diets are available, many with conflicting information. There is a lot of confusion about which diet or food is best. Nearly all diets will help a person achieve some weight loss but after great effort, and for various reasons, yo-yo weight gain is inevitable. Insulin resistance The common pathology for all the chronic diseases including obesity is a problem called insulin resistance. In recent years, insulin resistance has become better understood and managed with nutrition modification. The great news is that corrective carbohydrate restriction can reverse insulin resistance.

Importance of preconception and pregnancy Since the 1980s an exciting field of research has been looking at the importance of pregnancy and preconception as the times of greatest opportunity to program the new baby to have the best chance of a life without chronic illness. It all started when a relationship was found between birth weight and subsequent death in later life from heart disease. Initially this field of research was called the “Fetal Origins of Disease” and has morphed into the “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease”. Increasing your lifespan is a bad idea JEFF OSBORNE FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL EXPLAINS WHY t’s interesting to speak to people about how long they would like to live for. I get a varied range from 80-something to over 100! But I'm always surprised when people opt for the lower end of that scale or scoff at the idea of living longer than 100. The reason some people don’t want to live past a certain date is that they have in their head what life will be like in the later stages. In that case, working to increase your lifespan is a bad idea. What you want to do is increase your ‘health span’. Your health span is a measurement of the years of qualify life. Nobody would like an extra 10 years if they were spent in misery. What we all want is to live as many ‘good’ years as possible. When it comes to increasing your health span, there are two major strategies that one should approach. Understand this: everything has a trade-off. You will live longer if you don’t drink alcohol, but is that an existence you want to endure? This applies for so many things. Let’s look at the two health-span-increasing strategies. 1. Don’t die prematurely. 2. Keep your body as young as possible. Don’t die prematurely If you have made it past 40 years old, the likelihood that accidental death is coming for you is significantly lower. We tend to take less risks and therefore mainly only fall victim to the Big 3 lifestyle diseases below. 1. Cardiovascular diseases. There are many factors that increase your chances of these like family history and blood lipids but if you can keep

your triglycerides low your chances of an event will also be low. 2. Cancer. Family history will play a big role in many types of cancer but controlling the things that create damage to DNA and therefore cancer can reduce your chances. Controlling the hormone that helps small cancers grow rapidly (IGF-1) and the hormone that allows them to proliferate (Insulin) also reduces your chances. 3. Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease. The mechanism that causes each of these is insulin resistance. And unfortunately, if you get one of these, the likelihood you’ll get the other is much higher. Keep your insulin levels lower by eating less crappy carbs and more healthy carbs, proteins and fats. Keep your body as young as possible As we age, we lose a few things slowly when it comes to physical capacity. First, we lose speed, then we lose strength, then we lose balance. Once all three are gone, you are no longer an independent human. If you are strong, make sure you work on speed. My favourite thing here is jumping! I loved seeing our 82-year-old client in the studio increase her strength and then do a jump onto a box! If you aren’t strong, you need to start participating in some structured strength training with a good trainer. A good test to see if you are strong enough is: 1. Can you do 5 or more push ups? 2. Can you sit on a low bench (where your hip and knee joint are the same height) and then stand up on one leg without help from your hands? If you can't do either of these, get started strength training TODAY! If you have lost balance, get some help to work on that by just standing on one leg for over a minute, then work up to trying it with your eyes closed. It is more challenging than you think! confidence Sarah Blinco shares how she blocked self-doubt to make a happy, healthy change

eatly drafted under the date ‘December 31, 2017’, are a few resolutions for the year to come, including one that jumps out at me now, ‘Join an exercise class’. It’s something I wanted to try because classes have provided me with positive fitness structure in the past. I remember that first week back in January, keenly researching suitable options like dance, Barre and Pilates. I was geared-up to get along to the initial sessions of the year, believing all newbies would start then too. As the hour drew near however, the internal dialogue began: ‘Good God, you’re too old to join a dance class!’; ‘You won’t even make it through the first 10 minutes without needing a sit-down and a bucket of water’; ‘Imagine how awesome everyone else looks in their designer active-wear (and how idiotic I’ll look in my eBay specials)’. I panicked, realising exactly how many years it’s been since I survived a group fitness class, let alone been in the routine of attending. For the past year I’ve maintained independent gym visits when I can, walks and yoga, but I’m aware the body gets used to repetitive activities and we start to see that our efforts don’t really reap rewards. Something must change, although I’d still not gone to a class! Cooper — my fitness-fan, fun-loving other half — bit his tongue for a good seven months. I’ve only just learnt he’s reluctant (scared?) to divulge certain truths to me. Apparently about five years into this 17-year thing we have going on, he told me he didn’t think a shirt I was wearing out one night suited me. The wrath that ensued meant he thinks twice before sharing such insight. Of course, despite me having no recollection of said event, I insisted I’ve grown since then, and promised that honesty is the right way. (Probably.) He proceeded to share a flyer found at his gym promoting a special deal on Reformer Pilates classes, reminding me that I had been interested to get into a class activity. The proposal was positively received (much to Cooper’s relief). Reformer Pilates had always been something I knew would be beneficial, garnering similar results as Ballet which I loved, well, until I was 16. But the idea of figuring out the ‘apparatus’ (a ‘bed’ attached to springs that move a carriage along the bed’s frame — thought about too deeply, it may September 2018

resemble a form of torture depicted in The Tudors), freaked me out. In a headspace to give something new a go though, I signed up for a 10-class pass. The beauty of this situation, for me at least, is that I need to use the class passes within a certain time-frame, must book the sessions in advance, and if I bail at the last minute (typical ‘me’) I lose the investment, because these come with a 48hour cancellation rule. Seems I’m motivated by money, or loss of it, so I show up! The first class was challenging, but not intimidating as I’d feared. The instructor set up my reformer, and explained each exercise, as has been the case in subsequent classes. I left that first time with wobbling and shaking sensations in muscles I didn’t know existed! I still go to each class with excuses in my head about why I’m too tired, too busy and too uncoordinated to attend, but

After about five weeks I noticed some nice tone, which has led to body-confidence I thought was long gone. Full disclosure, I’m just back at work following a break of nearly two weeks, and I’m aware I need to leave my wine-loving-holidayhappy vibe behind and return to a healthier lifestyle. That said, I’m proud I pushed myself through significant years-old blocks to embrace something that works for me, now. Make or break your habits, one step (or class) at a time — studies show it’s how we genuinely accommodate new, better behaviours. I feel I’m finally there, and I’ve signed up for more!
