I’m a California Girl through and through! I graduated from the University of Southern California, and afterwards I worked as an entertainment reporter/ TV Host. I interviewed celebrities on the red carpet for People Maga zine,, and Us Weekly, to name a few. My true passion has always been traveling. I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to travel and explore different food and cultures from around the world, and even received my frequent flyer number at only six months old. But no matter how much I travel, San Diego is where I always return.

Scan with your smart phone and GO to our website

IT’S EASY TO SCAN! Grab your smartphone, iTouch, or tablet and scan QR (Quick Response) codes to watch as we show you where to eat and play in sunny San Diego. 1. Download any free QR code scanner (we recommend i-nigma) app from the Google Play market or iTunes store. 2. Open the app and hold your smartphone several inches above the QR codes in the magazine. (four to seven inches is ideal) 3. Hold your phone steady and keep it parallel to the page. Within seconds you’re directed to a short video!

I know how lucky we are this time of year when talking with friends and family who are stuck in six inches of snow and we’re heading out to the beach. I’m so blessed to be able to call San Diego home with my incredible supportive husband Nick and our beautiful baby girl Georgia Rose. I’m thrilled to be a part of Getaway as both the Editor-in-Chief and as a host sharing some of our favorite spots with you.

I’m no psychiatrist, but for me living in a city you love and exploring the city you live in are two key essentials of a happy life. I was born and raised in Northern California and moved to San Diego over a decade ago. I now have two great kids and a beautiful wife. My life as a TV host for shows about pets, food, travel and entertainment has allowed me to experience things most people don’t get the chance to do.

Some of my favorite things to do while I’m home in San Diego is to relax while eating a warm apple pie in the mountains of Julian or walk on the beaches around sunset because who are we kidding? It’s still in the 60s! There’s always an activity for the whole family to enjoy, so get outside and start working on all of your New Year’s resolutions!

Scan with your smartphone and WATCH VIDEOS about the area

Our local team is made up of a variety of ages and backgrounds working together to help you have the perfect vacation. We will never send you to a “tourist trap” because we personally explore and share what the locals love to do. Most of us were born, raised and lived here our entire lives. We love everything that the area has to offer and are thrilled to share our experiences with you.

We can’t think of a better place to start off the New Year than here in our Winter Wonderland of beautiful San Diego. Ok, so we might not have sleigh bells and snow covered grounds, but we have the option of starting our day playing in snow in the mountains, hiking in the desert in the afternoon or surfing and playing in the sand by sunset. Our weather is still pretty amazing in the “winter months” which gives you plenty of options to enjoy the many outdoor activities our city has to offer.

With 70 miles of beautiful coastline and a wide variety of terrain (think beaches, deserts, and mountains), it can be difficult to decide where to start. Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you explore this amazing area!

While you’re visiting, the first thing to do is start thinking like a local. San Diego is made up of small surrounding cities with their own distinct personalities, and knowing the difference between downtown and say, Carlsbad, can mean all the difference.

“We’re sure after your visit here, you’ll understand why it’s called America’s Finest City.” ~ Getaway Girl Margi

San Diego City Map > PAGE 42 La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, and some amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the Birch Aquarium. Jeff & Margi enjoying La Jolla

Oceanside: It’s the most northern tip of San Diego before heading into Camp Pendleton, with a fun marina to explore.

Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars and restaurants that are perfect for party hopping.

Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the US in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world. Downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with plenty of restaurants, nightclubs, lounges and live music venues. You’ll find Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown.

WINTER Wonderland fun in the ‘winter’ sun

When you think of “winter time” you don’t usually picture San Diego. But our location and moderate climate provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy winter in a whole new way! There are plenty of activities available to keep you busy all winter, so as your local guide we’ve put together an amazing recreation/2-stand-guys-paddle-board-lessons

By: Carianne Steinman

list of fun things to do to enjoy winter in San Diego.

Activities Whale Watching

Throughout winter, gray whales travel right past San Diego during their migration to the warm Baja California waters. If you’ve never seen a whale in its natural habitat, you’re in for a treat! You can try to spot a whale from land at the Birch Aquarium, but the real fun is going on a whale watching cruise out on the water with a company such as Sail San Diego or Flagship Cruises.

Take advantage of the fact that San Diego’s winter never throws frost over those flowers and see what’s in bloom during the winter time! For a small fee, you can spend hours walking along paths of beautiful plants in the Botanical Gardens. Even better? Enjoy free admission on the first Tuesday of every month! Pack a sack lunch and enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature at one of their picnic tables.

Sometimes a pod of dolphins will even splash around right next to the boat! Tip: If you are prone to motion sickness, don’t forget to take some medication first as the waves can get a little rocky.

Olympic Training Center (Chula Vista)

During the month of February the entire world will be watching the Winter Olympics broadcast from Russia. But did you know that we have an Olympic training center right here in San Diego? You can take a tour of the facility and see how Olympic hopefuls train for the big event! When you think of San Diego, you think of beaches. But the weather turning colder in December does not always keep us out of the water. If you’re really into surfing, grab (or rent) a board and a wetsuit and hit the water for what is often considered San Diego’s best surf season. Don’t know how to surf but want to learn? Take lessons from SurfDiva! (Warning: The beaches are not staffed with lifeguards during the winter, so only enter the ocean if you’re a very experienced swimmer!)

Day Trips Temecula Valley Wine Country

If you’re coming to San Diego to get as far away from traditional “winter” activities as possible, you might enjoy a trip to Temecula Valley Wine Country. It’s less than an hour from San Diego to visit a gorgeous winery. While you’re enjoying the warm weather, you can taste one (or several) of the hundreds of award-winning wines. And if you think these wineries are stunning from the ground, you may want to consider hopping in a hot air balloon and experiencing the beauty of California’s wine country from the sky!

San Diego is popular because of its temperate climate, but some people miss the feeling of “real seasons” and winter snow when they come to San Diego. Fortunately, we are located right next to the mountain town of Julian! Go during the coldest winter months and you can walk around this quaint town while enjoying some light snowfall. Don’t forget to pick up one of Julian’s famous pies at the Julian Pie Company!

Big Bear

If you’re in San Diego but still want the full “winter” experience, we are only about two-and-a-half hours away from popular Big Bear Mountain Ski Resorts. You can spend all day in the snow skiing and snowboarding. Lessons for beginners and equipment rentals are available through the resort. After spending a day or two in the snow, you can return to the warm San Diego sunshine in just a matter of hours! Note: Cars may require chains on their tires in order to be able to travel up the snowy mountain. During your visit to San Diego, you don’t have to worry about spending the winter stuck indoors. We have snow, sun, beaches, mountains and all the fun activities to go along with the scenery. However you want to spend your winter vacation, San Diego has it all!

LIST WITH THESE FUN ACTIVITIES By: Alisa Kerr First up? An amazing, one-of-a-kind experience with Jetpack America! Fly like a Super Hero

If you could have any super power for a day, what would it be? If you’re like the majority of people you immediately thought “flying!” Well, you’re in luck. Thanks to Jetpack America you can fly, you can fly, you can fly! Not only does the water propulsion jetpack let you soar 30 feet above Mission Bay, you can also run along the water, zoom through the waves on your belly, dive below the surface and launch into the air like Flipper. It is awesome! Jetpacking is exciting, but also easy and safe to do. Before your flight you watch an instructional video and then practice with the Jetpack America crew in a simulator. Once you’re comfortable with the operation of the jetpack you’re cloaked with a lifejacket and helmet. The Jetpack America crew secures you into a jetpack that resembles Buzz Lightyear and makes you involuntarily exclaim, “To infinity and beyond!” With the press of a button your jetpack is humming, and with an ever-so-slight lowering of your arms you’re up, up and away! You control your up and down motion with tiny, relaxed movements of your arms, and you turn by simply looking in the direction you want to go. Lower your arms slightly and up you go, climbing the “stairway to heaven” to beautiful views high above Mission Bay. Hold your arms level to the surface to walk on water - no faith required!

A Jetpack America crew member jetskis beside you filming your experience while also making sure you’re always safe and having a blast. Jetpack America is an incredible adrenaline rush, epic superhero experience, and undeniably unique water sport all wrapped into one amazing activity. Clockwise from below: “A Night To Remember” was a way Viz could learn about Van Gogh and honor his painting, “The Starry Night.” Hidden inside of Viz’s artwork you will find some of Van Gogh’s titles of his paintings, a self-portrait, an ear, his brother Theo and much more. “Reggae Days” Gregg wanted draw and honor a music legend and it was between 2Pac or Bob Marley. After several months Viz finally chose Bob because of the huge Reggae culture he discovered in San Diego. “Off California” is a dedication and recreation of the famous woodcut, “Mt. Fuji Seen Through the Waves Off Kanagawa”, by artist Katsushika Hokusai.

Shopping at Viz Art Ink Gallery By: Stephanie Lian

Located in the scenic coastal community of Carlsbad, I visited Viz Art Ink Gallery on a sunny fall day. The gallery is a rustic, creative, and homey spot, where the artist displays his work outside for your enjoyment as you walk in the door. There is plenty of character inside with high ceilings, large-paned windows, hardwood floors and a backyard filled with art.

This sparked his first piece “Class Notes.” Gregg professes to a six-year drawing hiatus after high school, which landed him in a dark place where he felt void of direction while also realizing the time to slow down had arrived. At age twenty-one, Gregg relocated to San Diego seeking needed medical attention which landed him in Carlsbad.

I found Gregg Visintainer, owner and artist, literally at the drawing board working on a new piece. Gregg’s friendly down-to-earth vibe allowed me to feel genuinely welcomed, and his art has found an unequaled niche. His hand-drawn pen and ink images display a main theme with a patterned maze of hidden related words, symbols and images. As Gregg puts it, “The more you look, the more you find.”

His intentions to head back to the Bay Area fizzled as he reconnected with his love of art and remained in Carlsbad. Gregg considers “Lonely World” his most significant piece as it was inspired by his dark six-year hiatus. Completed at age twenty four, it required a three month period to complete. After a two year wait for the perfect spot in which to unfold his vision, Gregg opened the doors to Viz Art Ink on February 2nd, 2013.

Gregg's journey leading to his Carlsbad Gallery is an exclusive one. As far back as he remembers, he has always seen the world in patterns and has always enjoyed drawing. However, it was not until about five years ago he realized he could do something special with that creative combination. At age fifteen, Gregg found himself constructing intricate doodles on test papers and desks versus minding class lectures. He would sketch patterns which included hidden images found on classmates t-shirts or other objects in his view.

Gregg displays his art along with the unparalleled works of 19 other local artists. He selects artists who work hard with something unique to offer. Catch Viz Art Ink’s one year anniversary event on February 1st, 2014, where you will enjoy live music, cold beers and wine, great eats and fine rare art. recreation/2-stand-guys-paddle-board-lessons

+ Chef Keegan Gerhard D BAR RESTAURANT

“fun dining at its finest” by: Elisa Boorman

As Chef Keegan Gerhard approached me waiting at the bar, he came up smiling like I was an old friend. You may have seen his face on Food Network, Travel Channel, or CNN, but you would never know of his celebrity status with his humble, modest attitude and overwhelming passion for his work. Quite often, Chef Keegan is alongside his staff serving up his intricate creations to restaurant-goers, likely to strike up conversation and tell you more about the dish he created. Keegan and his co-owner/wife opened up D Bar just over a year ago in the heart of San Diego’s up-and-coming culinary scene in Hillcrest. This eclectic, upbeat community in Uptown San Diego prides itself on the wide variety of energetic kitchens located throughout the area. You can find a number of upscale boutiques and hip “farm-to-table” cuisines. This was in the forefront of Keegan’s choice in location; he wanted a fun place to bring in the good energy of people looking to enjoy themselves and have a good time. As Chef Keegan explains, “If nothing else I want it to be fun.” Centrally located in the “Village” on 5th Ave, D Bar is just that “fun dining at its finest.”

Winter 2014 | getaway san diego

Now that we know dining at D Bar is fun, let’s get back to the basics - the desserts! The idea of a dessert bar came from Keegan and his wife “tired of pastry chefs being the ‘weirdos’ in the basement,” and liked the idea of having an open kitchen where you can see your dessert being made right before your eyes. Now that’s real entertainment! There was some controversy from the designers at first when planning the bar. “They wanted to make the counter high, like a sushi bar, but we said ‘No, make it lower so the customer can see! It’s fun!’ The only drawback is that people sit, and don’t want to leave,” Keegan explains. Real entertainment makes it difficult to turn tables quickly, and that’s not always a terrible thing. Inevitably, I asked him what his favorite thing to make is. “Ice cream, sorbet, and gelato - most every dessert has ice cream or sorbet on it. Fruit desserts are more my thing because chocolate desserts are cheating. If you give somebody something warm and chocolaty they’re going to like it.” He went on to describe their seasonal apple dessert, “Apple tart tartan, caramelized apples, apple coleslaw, apple cider reduction, two different kinds of apple chips.”

“So, apples six ways. I just like the endless opportunities with fruit. That, to me, is endless entertainment. And apples to me are fun to play with,” he says. Keegan’s choice of fruit holds true to D Bar’s reputation of taking advantage of San Diego’s local, seasonal product. He reminded me that San Diego has more USDA certified organic farms than any place in the country - endless opportunities for creative dish-making. Meanwhile, while my mouth is watering over the thought of caramelized apples, we were served our first round of appetizers; Crispy Brussel Sprouts flash fried with a sriracha honey glaze and toasted hazelnuts; When Pigs Fly, crispy smoked pork drumsticks with a miso sesame barbecue sauce and seasonal veggies; and the famous Crue Fries, garlic parmesan fries with a mac n’ cheese sauce, melted cheddar jack, applewood bacon and chives. And those were just the appetizers! They were all prepared perfectly and bursting with flavors. The menu itself is called “Things We Like to Eat,” because, according to Keegan, “It really is that. Like, mac n’ cheese. One of my favorite things ever.” Of course there are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, and the chefs are happy to cater the menu to what you’re looking for. recreation/2-stand-guys-paddle-board-lessons

Even the bartender makes “special concoctions,” depending on the exact ingredients your palate prefers. Keegan explained the difficulties in creating a menu and deciding what labels to put on your food. “Someone called it ’Upscale comfort food,’ and I think I’m okay with that. [It’s] food done well, with a twist.” What stood out to me most about D Bar was the upscale, yet comfortable atmosphere of the huge, wide open space, with skylights in the day time and a sliding glass garage door opening. Keegan agreed, “It came out fancier then I intended.” Although he doesn’t consider it a “fancy” place, the food definitely reflects an upscale quality in an atmosphere that comes to life. So why would someone come to D Bar? According to Keegan, “There are a million reasons. Grab some dessert. Grab a drink. Make it a date night. The delicious food. It’s really the energy in this place that draws people inside and makes people stay.” It’s all about the atmosphere and the experience you’ll take home with you. Keegan explains that it’s “a culinary sanctuary where you can let your guard down and have fun. Food does that. It allows you to relive memories and create new ones.” D Bar, originally named for its unique “Dessert Bar” really does offer you so much more than that.

Brews and Beers to T By: Nick Filipovitch

an Diego is known for its sun and surf, but has quickly become America's beer capital with over 70 craft breweries and counting. San Diego craft brewing dates back to 1896, but thanks to Prohibition, beer production halted in the 1920s. With the repeal of prohibition in the 1930s, San Diego began brewing once again. Traditional craft beer is brewed by an American craft brewer, which is a small, independently-owned business, with an annual production of six million barrels of beer or less. The San Diego beer obsession stems from the city's strong home-brewing culture. Home brewing is a fun and rewarding hobby that has become dream jobs for many of our local craft brewers.

Winter 2014 | getaway san diego

Most breweries operate and sell in industrial-type buildings, usually in areas a bit off the beaten path. We suggest taking advantage of the many brewery tours available, which can help you navigate to several of our city's breweries. Plus, with beer ranging from 5-11% ABV, you will be grateful for a designated driver! Each brewery generally offers 4 oz. tasters or pints of your favorite beer. Many breweries partner with mobile kitchens to make food available for purchase. To be safe, we suggest bringing a couple of bags of pretzels or chips. However, several pubs around the county serve food in addition to the wide variety of local craft beers on tap. Sublime Ale House in San Marcos and SD Tap Room in Pacific Beach are two we suggest.

Toast in the New Year

Don't miss the opportunity to sample San Diego's fresh, local beers. Even if you are not a beer lover, surely you will find a taste that suits your palate. Trust us - you won't be disappointed. Don't blame us if you become a beer snob though, and refuse to drink fizzy yellow beer ever again. You're welcome for that! Featured Brewery - Mike Hess Brewing Hess Brewing has two locations, one in North Park and one in Miramar, serving incredible craft beer. Both facilities are family and dog friendly, but we suggest visiting the North Park location because of its large, comfortable atmosphere and plenty of seating.

A video about SD Tap Room

Near the bar there is a shelf with several games to enjoy during your visit. Get the family involved in a game of Uno or Scrabble while you sample the variety of beer. The artwork on the walls has meaning and significance to the names and varieties of the beers. An available beertender would be happy to give a quick explanation of the characters represented on the artwork as well as on their beer glasses. If you purchase a flight of tasters, you receive one of their glasses to take home with you. Hess brewing has many fantastic ales, but be sure to try the Dortmunder Lager(Reficio). Two locations in San Diego: North Park and Miramar, 619.786.4377,
