June 9 thru 12th in Downtown Nashville

MA Music Festival, the Ultimate Country Music Fan Experience, celebrates 45 years in 2016 with all the non-stop music, fan engagement, and artist experiences attendees have come to expect since the event began as Fan Fair® in 1972.

“Country Music festivals come and go, but this event has succeeded for four and a half decades because we constantly challenge ourselves to enhance the experience for our fans, the industry, and the artists,

who make this event possible,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “We don’t just raise the bar each year, we set the bar.”

The central fixture of the Festival is the relationship between the artists and their fans, but the real beneficiaries are the hundreds of thousands of students across the U.S. who now have access to in-school and after-school music education programs thanks to CMA Music Festival.

Since 2006, CMA and the CMA Foundation have donated more than $13.6 million to support sustainable music education initiatives across the country on behalf of the artists who participate in the event for free.

“CMA Music Festival has a rich history and enjoys a terrific reputation as the Ultimate Country Music Fan Experience, but the future is in these students and the opportunities provided them by supporting quality music education programs,” said Trahern. “The proceeds from CMA Music Festival provide children a richer life experience through music.”

2015 was a record-setting year for CMA Music Festival. The event drew a daily attendance of more than 87,000 fans from every state and two dozen foreign

countries, which was a 9.6 percent increase over 2014.

Tickets to 2016 CMA Music Festival are sold out, but there is so much more to enjoy than just the Nightly Concerts at Nissan Stadium. CMA Music Festival boasts numerous FREE stages featuring diverse lineups throughout downtown Nashville. Brand new this year is the Skyview Stage at Ascend Amphitheater, featuring unique artist performances and collaborations that you won’t see anywhere else! CMA Music Festival is a four-day ticket, but it is a week-long event with ancillary events and activities built around the Festival schedule.

Over the years, every star in the format has participated in CMA Music Festival, performing for free and greeting fans. The epicenter of that fan/artist interaction is Fan Fair X in the Music City Center. “The personal connection between artists and their fans is what sets this format apart, and defines this Festival,” Trahern said. “We have taken that relationship and amped it up in Fan Fair X this year with meet and greets, Q&A sessions, performances, a marketplace, lifestyle vendors, and more.”

The crown jewel of the Fan Fair X experience is the CMA Close Up Stage featuring intimate and interactive programming with top artists, including the featured “Artist of the Day.” Tickets to Fan Fair X are available at CMAfest.com. (Fan Fair X admission is included in fourday CMA Music Festival tickets). Fan Fair X tickets are $10 per day or $25 for a four-day pass.

stablished in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, Ryman Auditorium is a National Historic Landmark and must see for any Nashville visitor. Goo Goo Cluster In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented.

A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since.

Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold.

Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour!

In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate.

Another exciting addition to the brand’s offerings was added last year, a flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop. Located in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville, the Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon.

DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album.

The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere.

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep.

DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson.

DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come.

DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry.

DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey.

While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job.

This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well.

Frist Center Hosts All-Star Assembly of Spectacular Italian Vehicles, Including Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati

pening May 27 at Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945–1975 marks an unprecedented gathering of rare and stunning Italian-designed automobiles and motorcycles in a museum setting. The exhibition celebrates the streamlined elegance, novel and powerful engineering, and seductive allure characterizing Italian coachbuilt cars, concept cars, and motorcycles produced during the post–World War II economic revival. On view only at the Frist Center through October 9, 2016, Bellissima! boasts 22 extraordinary vehicles from private collections and museums that are now among the most sought-after collector cars in the world.

Automotive authority and guest curator Ken Gross has chosen 19 automobiles and 3 motorcycles for Bellissima!.

Moving from one gem to another, visitors will experience the creative connections and brilliant design language that helped propel Italy to the global forefront of the automotive world. “While providing a reminder of the role aesthetics can play in our daily lives, the exhibition also shows design excellence as a force that can transform a nation, in this case one that had recently been humbled by war, but which never lost its love for artistic expression in all aspects of life,” said Frist Center Chief Curator Mark Scala. “Tied to an age in which graceful aerodynamics provided an optimistic language of the future, these vehicles are quite simply astonishing on both a visual and technical level.”

Highlights include the ultra-rare trio of mid-1950s Alfa Romeo Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnicas, known as BATs, whose curvaceous fins and tapered tails suggest the curving wings and bullet-like bodies of bats in flight. The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is considered by design critic and exhibition

catalogue contributor Robert Cumberford to be “the most desirable of all sports cars ever made.” The game-changing Lamborghini Miura, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is a technical tour de force and as Ken Gross writes in the exhibition catalogue, “resembles a stiletto on cast magnesium wheels.”

Lesser-known vehicles in the exhibition will offer surprises for even the most knowledgeable car aficionados. The drastically slender 1970 Lancia Stratos’ mere 33-inch-tall wedge-shaped body has doors that open vertically rather than swinging outward. The futuristic, arrow-shaped 1955 Ghia Gilda, named for Rita Hayworth’s slinky character in the film Gilda, has an elongated hood, snug cockpit, pointy rear fenders and jet-like engine whine that evoke advanced aircraft design. The motorcycles on display are the 1957 Moto Guzzi V-8 “Otto,” 1973 MV Agusta 750 Sport, and the 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport.

The post–World War II economic revival in Italy, known as “The Italian Economic Miracle” (il miracolo economico), was a nationwide rebirth driven by innovation in the design of automobiles, architecture, fashion, and furniture. In Italy’s wartime economy, there was little demand for luxury vehicles, but when hostilities ceased, the country’s prewar passion for road and track racing rebounded with tremendous energy.

“Wartime work in aeronautics helped Italian engineers and designers develop familiarity with aerodynamics, lightweight construction, exotic metals, and technologies such as multicamshaft high-revving engines,” said Gross.

Nashville’s renowned Johnny Cash Museum has only been opened less than two years but has expanded three times during that period.

The latest expansion includes tripling the size of the museum store and adding a Bongo Java Café featuring Nashville’s finest coffee and coffee drinks as well as gourmet café fare. The original Bongo Java has the distinction of being Nashville’s oldest and most honored coffee house, having opened its first location in 1993. Bongo is known for it’s use of local ingredients and coffee beans are organic and fare trade.

The café offers a delicious assortment of pastries and baked goods as well as sandwiches, salads and other items made fresh daily in the facility’s new kitchen.

Signature items include Johnny Cash’s Iron Pot Chili made from a recipe created by The Man In Black himself. Other favorites include a Fried Bologna and Pimento Cheese sandwich and The Elvis, which features The King’s favorite peanut butter, honey, bananas and bacon served on honey wheat bread.

With the current expansion, the museum has expanded its daily operating hours from 9:00AM to 7:00PM, seven days a week. The Bongo Java café opens daily at 9:00am.

Steve Tobin : Southern Roots February 20 - September 4, 2016 (Indoor exhibition ends on May 29)

teve Tobin, a sculptor and artist of international renown, will debut Southern Roots, a solo exhibition of monumental works from his Steelroots series at Cheekwood in 2016. Tobin’s Steelroots evolved from the artist’s bronze Walking Roots, which culminated in the first art memorial in Lower Manhattan commemorating the devastating attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

In the days following the attack, Tobin, whose bronze Walking Roots had been on exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and were de-installed on September 10, 2001, heard the remarkable story of the old sycamore tree across the street from Ground Zero that “saved St. Paul’s Chapel” and its historic tombstones from destruction. After three years of negotiation with officials at Trinity Church, Tobin managed to salvage the stump and root system from the tree and created the bronze Trinity Root sculpture, which was dedicated on the four year anniversary of the World Trade Center attack at its permanent site of Wall Street and Broadway. Tobin decided that the Trinity Root would be the last bronze roots sculpture in the series.

The Steelroots evolution took the theme of roots from naturalist to modernist, enabling Tobin much greater reach in terms of scale and gestural forms. From the Dancing Roots to the Gothic Arch and minimalist three branch roots, the Steelroots series has expanded

exponentially Tobin’s oeuvre.

The Southern Roots exhibition will span Cheekwood’s vast landscape, including five outdoor areas. The Museum of Art will play host to smaller pieces from Tobin’s extensive portfolio of sculpture. While in the Museum, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Southern Roots in the second floor gallery spaces, each providing an intimate setting to observe a particular style and medium of Tobin’s historic work. A piece Tobin’s work will also be located downtown Nashville at the Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville’s Entry Garden (February 12-14) and then will move to the Riverview Garden. In addition to Tobin’s massive sculptures in steel and bronze, the artist incorporates natural elements such as wood, glass and ceramics into his beautiful, mysterious and dramatic works of art. Tobin’s newest series, using wood from fallen trees in Costa Rica, has never before been exhibited and will be a highlight of the indoor Museum exhibition.

Born and raised on Philadelphia’s Main Line, Tobin’s first awakening to the natural world that

would so profoundly shape his future art work was in the treehouse of his youth, where he carefully observed patterns in nature, shadows and light.

He went on to earn a degree in Theoretical Mathematics from Tulane University, where he also participated in a glass blowing class. This set the stage for what would become a decades-long exploration of the medium of glass, with Tobin distinguishing himself as one of the top artists in the then fertile studio glass movement, culminating with a blockbuster two person show with Marc Chagall in the caves of Nutijarvi, Finland.

Tobin’s segue into metal sculpture proved equally phenomenal, as he quickly became established as one of the top, most ambitious sculptors in bronze and steel in the fine art world where he remains today.

The Monkees. Simon & Garfunkel. All were among the many rock and folk artists who came to Nashville in the late 1960s and early ’70s to work with the city’s versatile, hotshot session musicians, the “Nashville Cats.”

The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s current major exhibition, Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City, explores this vital, magical time.

Dylan’s decision to record in Nashville provided a major catalyst in bringing many others to what must have seemed a very unlikely destination in the politically polarized Sixties. In spite of its reputation among hipsters as a conservative town, removed from the main trends in popular music, Nashville, in fact, was home to musicians who had a huge influence on other music scenes of the era, including those of New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, and London.

“Nashville has always been a more nuanced music center than it commonly gets credit for, and the same thing could be said for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. We strive to tell the full story of country music’s evolving history using a mix of provocative learning experiences, and this exhibit is a great opportunity to talk about the early confluence of country and rock,” said museum CEO Kyle Young.

“Dylan recorded Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, and Nashville Skyline here. The Byrds made Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Neil Young recorded Harvest, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Albums like these had a profound influence on popular music as well as establishing Nashville as a music hub and cool southern city with a sense of place.”

Many artists who followed Dylan’s lead and made the pilgrimage to Nashville to record or appear on Cash’s show were rewarded with the opportunity to work with world-class musicians. In several cases, the experiment yielded some of the artists’ most successful or influential albums, thanks to the accomplished players drawn from a core group of Nashville studio musicians including David Briggs, Kenny Buttrey, Fred Carter Jr., Charlie Daniels, Pete Drake, Mac Gayden, Lloyd Green, Ben Keith, Grady Martin, Charlie McCoy, Wayne Moss, Weldon Myrick, Norbert Putnam, Jerry Reed, Pig Robbins, and Buddy Spicher, among others.

This is not primarily a story of cultural or political divisions, but rather of people coming together from very different backgrounds and moving past perceived divisions to find common ground through music.

Between 1966 and 1974, while contributing to countless country music classics, Nashville session musicians also played on landmark pop and rock songs such as Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” and “Lay Lady Lay”; Young’s “Heart of Gold”; the Byrds’ “Hickory Wind”; Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time”; Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”; Cohen’s “Bird on a Wire”; Cale’s “Crazy Mama”; Baez’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”; and McCartney’s “Sally G.” Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City ends its run December 31, 2016.

he Johnny Cash Museum features the largest collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the world. From The Man in Black’s earliest childhood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here.

Exhibits chronicle Johnny’s life and provide a very personal and unique glimpse into his world. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000.

Our newest exhibit, Legends of Sun Records, features artifacts, films and musical recordings from Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. Among the artifacts featured are some of the earliest Presley pieces ever discovered, a pair of Roy Orbison’s signature eyeglasses, handwritten lyrics to the Rock and Roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes and much more.

Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers.

His concerts tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His Facebook page has over

10 million followers; more than most living entertainers.

He posted over 130 hits on the Billboard Country singles chart. Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960.

Johnny Cash is the only artist to have songs on the Billboard charts for six consecutive decades. He received two of the Nation’s greatest honors; The National Medal of Arts, presented by President George W. Bush and the Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Bill Clinton. He amassed 17 Grammy awards during the span of his career; among the most awarded to any entertainer in history.

Personalities ranging from Snoop Dog, the members of U2, Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Springsteen and several U.S. Presidents, among many others are self-professed Cash fans, demonstrating his broad popularity which spans age and culture.
