I once visited with someone in the hospital with a gracious attitude. They were concerned about their diagnosis, but said, “I can’t imagine how I would get through this without the Lord.” They then said, “I think of others in this hospital who don’t know the Lord’s peace.”
Then as we prayed, I prayed for the person’s healing. When it was their turn to offer a prayer, they thanked God, that in their hospital stay, they would have an opportunity to share God’s love and peace with others who are worse off than they were. Praying with an attitude of thanksgiving teaches us not to worry. The patient for whom I was offering prayer was teaching me what it was to live in joy.
In the early days of the church, Paul wrote a letter to the Philippians to encourage them. In Philippians 4:2-5, in the midst of his encouragement, he had some words for two key members of the church at Philippi who were having a disagreement. They were two women, Euodia and Syntyche. He wrote:
"I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near."
Lest anyone ever denigrate the role of women in the church’s life, it should not go unnoticed that Paul upholds Euodia and Syntyche as fellow workers in the gospel along with Clement, whom tradition tells us became the second bishop of Rome.
Paul pleads for them to be united in Christ by an attitude of joy, to rejoice in Christ, and to be gentle toward one another. He encourages them to focus on their common relationship with Christ, and to let their spirit always be careful toward others, looking for the good and not the negative. And to do all this remembering that the Lord is near.
I once read a devotion that talked about how both hummingbirds and vultures fly over our nation's deserts. The vultures thrive on that which has died. Hummingbirds seek the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on the past of what was, with what is dead and gone. Hummingbirds live on new life, filling themselves with freshness. And each bird finds exactly what it is looking for. And so do we all. (Steve Goodier, Quote Magazine, in Reader's Digest, May, 1990.)
Remembering the Lord is near, let all of us heed Paul's words to the two women in Philippi. Let our relationships with Christ be central to how we treat others, rejoicing in all that God means to us, seeking to find the joy in all situations.

Have you included GUMC in your will and estate planning?
If not, I would invite you to consider it for a variety of reasons:
To show your gratitude for the church's ministry. As the church has been a source of spiritual support and community for you, you may desire to express your thanksgiving by leaving a gift to the church in your will.
To support the church's mission and ministry. Your gift can help the church continue to provide programs and services that meet the needs of its members and the community.
To create a lasting legacy. By leaving a gift to your church, you can ensure that your values and beliefs will continue to be upheld long after you are gone.
There are also numerous tax and legal benefits to your estate and your descendants.
While making a gift to the church is relatively straightforward, you will certainly want to discuss the specific means through which you plan your gifts to the church with your attorney. There are several good options, and to name just a handful
• A one-time contribution such as cash, property, securities, or stock.
• A gift that returns continuous income such as a Charitable Remainder Trust.
• A gift payable upon your death, for example, naming the church as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
One of the questions I’ve been asked, on occasion, focuses on how much of the estate someone would have to give. The answer is simple as much or as little as you wish. It can be a specified dollar amount, a percentage, or even an item like a vehicle or house.
It may be that you want to designate your gifts for a particular ministry or program. It might be you feel supporting the church’s physical plant is a hope of yours. We even have a few ministry funds that you can think about the Endowment Fund, the Dell Harriman Music Endowment Fund, and the Capital Assets Fund. Of course, an undesignated gift is always a great way for you to assist the church address a current need at the time your gift is received.
Again, have you included GUMC in your will and estate planning? If not, I would invite you to consider it. If you would like to explore some options with me, I’m happy to meet with you to discuss those possibilities…just give me call.

Falling into Faith
Happy fall to you all! On August 11, we began a new message series at Prism, “Falling Into Faith: The Ways of a Jesus Follower.” On the GUMC website, under Prism, you can find eight things listed that Jesus followers do
regularly. We focus on one each week in depth and give examples of how we do this. It is perfect for newcomers and a great refresher for those of us who have been on this path for a while. You might think, “Oh this is going to be boring, beginner stuff!” Think again If our walk with Jesus isn’t challenging to us in some way, maybe we’re not doing it right?
So, as we celebrate the return to school, cooler temperatures, pumpkins everywhere, and falling leaves, let’s fall back to the habits that give us that life we would trade for no other the faith-filled life of love and adventure following after Jesus!
We look forward to seeing you at Prism, Sunday mornings at 11 am, and don’t forget to invite your FRANS! (Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors, and Strangers!)
Sundays | 11:00 am Owings Life Enrichment Center
The Ways of a Jesus Follower:
1. Makes their relationship of love and trust with Jesus foremost.
2. Expresses their calling at the intersection of how they are wired and what Jesus is up to in the world.
3. Regularly arranges meetings with Jesus in the gospels.
4. Navigates life by what would Jesus do if he were me and then does it.
5. Practices love with everyone in all situations at all costs.
6. Is ever-ready to share their experience with, strength from, and hope in Jesus as led to do so.
7. Understands that following Jesus is not a solo affair.
8. Shows gratitude to Jesus by investing time, energy, creativity, and resources (money & stuff) in Kingdom building.

Annual Fall Prayer Vigil 2024
October 4, 2024
8:00 am – 4:00 pm The Huddle
As an act of public witness, prayer vigils offer the community a space to connect with God, so that God’s vision can be carried out through us. As United Methodists, we understand prayer vigils to be grounded in the power of the Holy Spirit, to change people’s hearts and minds and to strengthen us in our work and witness. (UMC Church & Society) Participating in prayer vigils can stretch us in our prayer life.
Join the Care Ministries Team for the Annual Fall Prayer Vigil in the Huddle on Friday, October 4, from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. If you are unable to be present, there will be prayers available to pray at home or wherever you may be. They will be available at the Welcome Center on or before September 22. If you would like a copy emailed or mailed to you, or if you have any questions, contact Yolanda Toney at ytoney@germantownumc.org
As schooltime begins, the Care Ministries Team offers the following prayer.
Dear God, Giver of perfect gifts,
We give our child(ren) to you today and every day. Keep them and their schoolmates safe and protected. We ask that, in this school year, you would use every person, every experience, and every lesson to shape them into Your image, to grow in the fruit of Your spirit, to grow in their heart. Teach them to sacrifice like You did, giving up what they value for the good of others.
Bless the teachers and administrators these people who have committed to invest in the next generation. Keep them safe. Give them discernment and wisdom to see each student’s unique abilities and gifts. Multiply their preparation, and may their plans be fruitful. Fill the day with moments of wonder. Remind them of their special place in the lives of their students, and give them confidence in their abilities.
And for all the parents/grandparents, Lord, we pray for peace in our spirit. Keep us engaged in doing your will. Let us be extraordinarily grateful for the privilege of parenting. Fill us with wisdom as we watch our babies grow. Grant us patience and kindness as they stretch their wings. Hold us close to You as we learn to let them go. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
“So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 2:8

It’s very exciting to report that the refurbishment of the Chapel is finally showing physical progress. Prior to the work that you can see now, months have been spent on ensuring that all aspects of the project are done properly.
The refurbishment project is expected to take 2-3 months, so we’re hoping for a Celebration, sometime in November, in our newly updated chapel. Be sure to check out the plans displayed for you in the glassed-in area across from the chapel. We will keep you updated as we proceed through the process, and ask for you to be respectful of the work environment. Thank you for your prayers and patience during this chapel project.
In preparation for our updated chapel, the baby grand piano that was in the fellowship hall has been moved offsite for refurbishment. This Baldwin piano was originally purchased in 1977 for our newly-built sanctuary, so we think moving it to the updated chapel is the perfect new home for it. The piano refurbishment process at a cost of about $8,000 is not inexpensive. To meet these needs a “Chapel Piano Fund” has been established to accept monetary gifts for the project. This is good way for members of our congregation to contribute to the musical aspect of our chapel worship.
Through the summer months, we had many other church property needs and updates, which include:
• New luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) in the nursery and children’s education wing. The project covered over 13,000 sq/ft and took several weeks, but, as promised, was finished before school began again in August.
• HVAC repair/replacement. The intense heat of this summer has tested the multiple HVAC units throughout our various buildings. Most withstood the pressure, but we did have a few that needed replacement or repair. As we all keep up the repairs of our homes, we also must be good stewards of our church property. We are appreciative of our church maintenance staff, led by Charles Higgs, who works daily for us in the operation of our facilities.
Also, I’m delighted to report that our request for a donated pick-up truck for our church maintenance staff has been met! Debby Bland donated a 2009 Toyota Titan that belonged to her husband, Greg, who passed away several years ago. Greg and Debby were members of our church from 1984 to 1996, when they moved to Arkansas. Both were active in the music programs here and in their church in Arkansas. After Greg passed away, Debby moved back to town to be closer to her daughters and grand-children. She easily re-engaged in our church by rejoining our adult choir and handbells. Debby has cared for the truck and used it often. However, she decided to gift it to our church to be utilized by our
maintenance staff, as she felt Greg would want her to do. Debby shared this scripture with me: “Ask, and you shall receive...” (Luke 11:9) We asked, and so we received. Thank you Debby!
The Board of Trustees values the input of all our church members and welcomes any ideas that you have to enhance our property. We will be delighted to review and work with you to bring your ideas to fruition. Remember that the trustees are responsible for our church property, so please be sure to contact myself or Anne Bush before starting any project. This allows the church to be informed, in advance, of the action and provide the needed approval.
I know I speak for all of us when I say we are grateful for our church and how it shows our belief in each other and our place in this community.

Membership
Anita Lotz and George Ramsey
Germantown United Methodist Church welcomed Anita Lotz and George Ramsey into membership on Sunday, August 4, at our 8:30 traditional worship service. They joined by transfer of their membership from a sister denomination in the Memphis area. Their Welcome Friend is Laura Meanwell. Anita and George have joined the Asbury Sunday school class, and both sing in the Chancel Choir.
When asked what about Germantown UMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied, “Everyone we met as we visited Germantown United Methodist Church was so welcoming to us! As we learned more about the church, we realized that this was a place where we could grow deeper in our walk with Christ, share our gifts and talents, and work together with others to serve God and share God’s love.”
Janice and Martin Cate
Germantown United Methodist Church welcomed Janice and Martin Cate into membership on Sunday, August 4, at our 8:30 traditional worship service. They joined by transfer of their membership from Parkway Hills United Methodist Church, Madison, Mississippi. Their Welcome Friends are Linda and Ron Wiggins. Janice and Martin have joined the Asbury Sunday school class, and Janice volunteers in our children’s ministry and music programs.
When asked what about Germantown UMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied, “Watching the online services, we saw congregational singing from the hymnal and great preaching from the pastors. The choir and instrumental musicians were inspirational, too. We like that there is no political agenda, and that the church is open to all not judgmental. After visiting for a while, we found lots of places of service and have made many new friends.”

Sue Powers Myers
Each month we recognize a volunteer or volunteers who makean impactby selflessly sharing their time and talents for the betterment of our church and community.
Monday Night Visitation Volunteer...and
much more!
Sue Myers has organized the Monday Night Visitation Team for years. She schedules the visits, enlists cookie bakers, and bakes cookies herself for our first-time visitors. The team typically goes out on the Monday after a visitor has attended Germantown United Methodist Church (GUMC). Many of us will remember the kind visit and the tasty chocolate chip cookies (at least ours were chocolate chip) after our first visit to GUMC. However, this is only a small part of who Sue Myers is to GUMC.
When visitors come into GUMC, Sue makes it her mission to engage them. She quietly makes her way to visitors, and you’ll see her chatting quietly with them as they casually walk together. From these conversations, Sue is often able to glean how GUMC might best serve this person and how they might serve GUMC. From these chats, she makes connections that begin to weave a person into the life of the church. It is one thing to say a friendly “hello”; it’s another to show Christian fellowship. Sue exemplifies hospitality. If a visitor is interested in becoming a part of our congregation, she will be available to them every step of the way.
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. ~ Hebrews 13:2
Sue is active in many groups and organizations, including the Germantown United Women in Faith, the Horizon Sunday school class, the Monday Book Group, the Care Ministries team, and, of course, the Monday Night Visitation team.
Who was Sue before GUMC? Sue was born in Chicago to Gene and Anna Sue Powers. She had one brother, Larry, who passed earlier this year. Her home was a loving Christian home in the suburb of Homewood, in the Chicago area. During Sue’s high school years, her family moved to the St. Louis area but returned to Chicago three years later.
At Missouri Valley College, a small liberal arts college in Marshall, Missouri, Sue met her husband, Joel. They married in July following their graduation. Just over a month following the wedding, Joel received his draft notice. He was inducted into the Army in September 1968 and shipped out to Vietnam the following June. Sue returned to her parents during this time.
When Joel returned home, Sue was working for Marshall Field’s, and he found employment with the Combined Insurance Company of America in Chicago. Joel and Sue were blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Tiffany.
Before landing in Germantown, the family lived in several suburbs in the Chicago area, Boise, Idaho, and Columbus, Mississippi. According to Joel, Sue relished and embraced the differences in the people and the areas where they lived. Sue Myers loves people, and people love her. GUMC is blessed to have an engaging member like Sue in its midst.

GUMC Bread Ministry
I have been praying and dreaming about this project for some time, now. I pray you’ll respond in a manner that helps it come to life.
We are fortunate to have two nearly-commercial kitchens on our campus. They get used occasionally for big events and help those events run smoothly. I’m proposing we gather the strength of our bakers and put these kitchens to more regular use with the GUMC Bread Ministry!
I envision a group of bakers gathering to master a provided recipe and share the results of the baking with the folks at Manna House, who have developed a ministry grounded in the spirit of the Catholic Worker Movement, offering guests from the streets a spirit of hospitality that respects their dignity as human beings. Adding occasional sustenance from our kitchens could be a part of the Manna House efforts. And by name, you see how our gifts of bread, of literal and spiritual sustenance, fit with Manna House.
I foresee a few challenges, but I also see many benefits. I’d like interested parties to discuss how to best execute this project. To facilitate a discussion, use this link (click here or scan the following QR code) as we seek to meet and prepare for a burgeoning ministry. Once a group has responded, I will call for a gathering.

Sunday School Snapshot
Trinity Class
The Trinity Sunday school class at GUMC is a diverse group of middle-aged adults, who come together to grow in their faith and to engage in fellowship and meaningful service events. Life is filled with twists and turns and milestones, all made more enriching when shared with a faith family. We have celebrated marriages and new babies together, grieved the loss of loved ones together, and supported each other through illnesses, injuries, and job losses.
This Month’s Focus: Trinity & Seekers
The class members range in age from roughly 40’s-60’s and hail from various professional and personal backgrounds. Everyone will find a welcoming home in the Trinity class, bonding over the desire to deepen their relationship with God. Sunday mornings are spent in member-led Bible studies that challenge participants to apply scriptural learning to their everyday lives. Beyond weekly gatherings, the Trinity class is heavily involved in the life of the broader church community. Each year, we spearhead the cooking efforts, led by class president Jay McKinney, for the youth group's popular "Daddy Craw's" fundraiser. You'll also find Trinity members serving on various church boards and committees, singing in the choir, and drumming for the Prism praise band.
Whether they're studying the Word, serving the congregation, or simply enjoying fellowship at a class party, the Trinity class exemplifies the meaning of the term "community." This is a group where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, united in their faith and their desire to grow closer to God.
Please join us in Room 145, Chapel Building. We look forward to meeting you!
Seekers Class
Faith, Fellowship, Fun. Those are good words to describe the Seekers Sunday school class. We are a group of older adults, not defined by age, but rather how active and lively we are. Through Christian service to our church and Community, this class is a vital force in the GUMC family.
We express our Faith through serving Communion, ushering, greeting, and answering the call a million other ways within the life of the church. Our members work on Habitat houses, and volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Room in the Inn, Team Read, Handy Helpers, and Urban Ministries. We donate to many local and church-related charities, such as the Mid-South Food Bank, GUMC Mountain Top, and the Urban Ministry Initiative. Our Sunday school classes range from traditional lessons on the Bible to more contemporary subjects, such as the plight of homelessness in our city, care-giving for our loved ones, and missionary work in other countries. We occasionally will invite a First Responder to

come to our class and update us on ways for seniors to protect themselves in their homes and on the streets.
The Seekers enjoy many opportunities for fellowship. From an elegant and festive Christmas party each season to summer outdoor barbecues, this group never misses a chance to get together and enjoy each other’s company. Whether we are working together on a church
...Seekers, Continued project or volunteering at one of the charities we support, the Seekers are always having fun. Many of our speakers have commented on the energy and lively vibe that they receive from teaching one of our Sunday classes. Our class roster boasts some long-time members of GUMC as well as some who have joined as recently as three years ago. If you are “seeking” an adult Sunday school class with plenty of chances to serve Christ, meet great people, and enjoy the loving fellowship of others, look no further than the Seekers class.
We meet at 9:30 am in the Adult Education Building, the first door on the left. Just follow the sounds of laughter.

Amos is often called a prophet of doom, and, when you begin to read his prophecy, it doesn’t take long to realize that nickname fits. However, every condemnation he gives serves as an invitation, a cry for us to “seek God and live” (Amos 5:4). In this 9-session study by Jennifer Rothschild, you’ll be invited to live assured, faithful, chosen, humble, justly, prayerful, and hopeful. Amos is promoting the God life, and the God life is the good life!

Christianity is a journey of real people, with their feet on the ground in real places. In this 7-session study, Rev. James Howell will take us on a spiritual pilgrimage to significant places in the ongoing story of the Christian faith. We’ll go from Bethlehem to Jerusalem, from the Jordan River to Assisi, and from the Sea of Galilee to Montgomery, Alabama. Along the way, we’ll see how Christians throughout history have brought their faith to life worldwide, in their own cities and communities. Part travelogue, part Bible study, this course will take us on a spiritual journey to places that are most important in our faith, and we’ll discover that the most important place of all is the place where we are, right now. Please join GUMC Room in the Inn as we celebrate new beginnings at The Cottage!
The Cottage was renovated after the 2023-2024 winter season, thanks to the hard work of a few of our church members and a generous donation given by friends of GUMC Room in the Inn. It has been upgraded with the following:
• Hardwood flooring extended into bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallway that mirrors the flooring in the dining room and kitchen.
• A Dutch door for the relocation supply closet, which enables an easier process for handing out toiletry items to guests.
• A fresh coat of paint on the upstairs and new window blinds that make inside areas brighter and more inviting.
• New hospital-grade pillows, beddings, and blankets that are easier for both guests and laundry angels to manage.

We encourage you to visit The Cottage and see all the updates in person. GUMC Room in the Inn will host an Open House at The Cottage on Sunday, October 6, from 9:30 am-12:30 pm for our entire congregation. This will be a come-and-go event so stop by at your leisure and feel free to bring a friend. Whether you’re a GUMC visitor or member, we would love for you to stop by and experience the magic of The Cottage!

Van Drivers – Drive the church van to pick up guests from downtown Friday night and shuttle the guests back downtown early Saturday morning.
Hospitality & Fellowship – 4 to 5 people are needed to help with dinner set-up, serving, and clean-up.
Meals – Provide dinner for about 24 people (salad, entrée, side, drinks, and dessert).
Take-away Bags – Contribute items for 14 snack bags (protein drink, granola bar, and fruit).
Overnight shepherds – Required to have two adults stay overnight with guests. This is usually the area where we have the most need. We are happy for groups of two to assist, or, if an individual is interested, you can help shepherd with another member of the leadership team.
Laundry Angels – Laundry is divided in half to make it more manageable for volunteers. Individuals will be responsible for washing used linens and returning them to The Cottage. There are 2 sets of washers and dryers at The Cottage, which makes it convenient to do laundry at The Cottage without having to take it elsewhere!
With a grateful heart, we are asking Sunday school classes to please prayerfully consider helping our church continue the ability to serve Room in the Inn this winter season. Our volunteer numbers have continued to declines, since the congregational shelter program resumed operations post-COVID.
For the 2024-2025 winter season, we will host 22 Friday nights. If only 11 of our 16 Sunday school classes could provide assistance and lead just two Friday nights out of the 5-month season, then we have all nights covered! Click here to volunteer, or scan the following QR code.
You can also find the Room in the Inn sign-up link under the “Missions” heading on the “Event Registrations” page of the GUMC website.
We are appreciative of our many team members who continue to make Room in the Inn a success at The Cottage!

Dr. Kahr is the Executive Director of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art (MBMA). Founded in 1916, MBMA is the City of Memphis’ art museum and the largest and oldest museum in the Mid-South. Its collection includes over 10,000 objects reflecting more than 5,000 years of human creativity. The museum is currently engaged in building a new home, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, that will open in 2026 on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Prior to coming to Memphis, Dr. Kahr was the Deputy Director for Curatorial and Planning at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the largest museum in the Western US, where she oversaw LACMA's award-winning and innovative artistic program. Dr. Kahr has produced over 300 exhibitions, including Children of the Plumed Serpent: The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl (2012), Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters (2016), and Betye Saar: Call and Response (2019). She initiated new partnerships to bring LACMA’s projects to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile, as well as to tour LACMA’s collections within greater Los Angeles, expanding access to LACMA’s programs. Dr. Kahr oversaw the gallery design and curatorial process for LACMA’s new 350,000 square-foot facility, which will open in 2024, and secured significant funding for the project. She also led DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) efforts for LACMA through its exhibitions and acquisitions, as well as through the development of programs to attract and retain staff from diverse backgrounds into the museum field.
Before coming to LACMA in 2010, she served as Assistant Director of Exhibition Planning at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She currently serves as an Accreditation Visiting Committee Member and Museum Assessment Program Peer Reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums. She holds a BA in Art History (Magna Cum Laude) and an MBA with a specialization in Nonprofit Management from Yale University, as well as a PhD in Art History from University College London.

Cinnamon Roll Recipe
Pre-order: Sunday, October 20 & Sunday, October 27 in the Fellowship Hall and OLEC
On Sundays, October 20 and 27, we will be on hand to take your cinnamon roll pre-orders in the Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall and Owings Life Enrichment Center (OLEC)! We bake a limited number of rolls from scratch, so it is very important that you pre-order. The cost is only $12 per dozen, payable by cash, check, or credit card (including a small handling fee). Pick-up will be in the OLEC gym on October 29, 30, and 31. You will choose your specific pickup date/time when preordering, and a reminder will be given to you.
We welcome baking helpers!
Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and lots of laughter with women at the church on our baking days, October 29-31, in the OLEC. Each baking day morning, we make the dough from scratch and set it aside to rise. The dough is weighed, separated, dipped in warm butter, and dredged in cinnamon. It is then knotted, proofed, and baked. What a wonderful scent of cinnamon rolls wafting through the air! These rolls may be frozen and reheated. Be the first to smell these warm, sweet, delectable rolls, straight from the oven!
Contact Stephanie Adams at (901)488-4748 or monacodog@aol.com or you may click here or follow the QR Code to the volunteer SignUpGenius to sign up to help on baking days. No experience is required, and we have great teachers!
The proceeds from your purchases help the many missions of Germantown United Women in Faith.
Thank you for your support!

Lauren Wright Hobbs Nursing Scholarship Awarded to Lauren Elizabeth Hopper
The Emmaus Class is proud to award Lauren Hopper the 2024 nursing scholarship for her fourth and last year of nursing school. The scholarship was established to honor Lauren Wright Hobbs, who loved serving others in the nursing profession. She lost her battle with cancer at the age of 29, in October of 2013. She left a wealth of family and friends, who will always remember her with love and happy memories.
Lauren Hopper is entering her final year at The University of Arkansas Nursing School. Her focus has been on trauma, but she is now expanding her interests to include labor and delivery. She will use her experience to pick her specialty before graduating in the coming spring. Lauren grew up in our church and served with our youth in many ways through her years here and has continued her acts of service while away at school in Fayetteville. Lauren believes that these experiences taught her to fall in love with caring for others and doing so with the love of Christ. Lauren says that receiving this scholarship each of her years in nursing school has been a great honor and helped to reinforce her desire to serve others through nursing.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a member of GUMC who is pursuing a degree in nursing. Donations can be made at any time to this scholarship fund by writing your check to GUMC with ‘Lauren Wright Hobbs Scholarship’ in the memo line. Thanks so very much to those who have already donated to this scholarship in Lauren’s name.
Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP)
Sarah Sutton, Director | ssutton@germantownumc.org
The school year for Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP) has officially begun! We are up and running, and we are off to a great start. New beginnings are so exciting, and we welcome our friends and families both returning and new with much joy and enthusiasm! We have embraced our new procedures and have enjoyed starting our new school year routine. Our little friends have impressed us so much, as they have adjusted to carline and outdoor drop off. We are all so happy to be together again for singing, playing and learning!
This summer was a busy one as we prepared for the upcoming school year! We worked to make sure all classrooms were cleaned and materials fully stocked for the school year. It is so wonderful to see our hard work pay off, as our sweet friends enter school each day!
Teachers and staff at GUMP are always working on growing and learning! Our back-to-school in-service included professional development from experts in our community, focused on healthy habits, health, safety, and supervision. Our staff participated in safety training and early language and literacy training from Childcare Resource and Referral Network, along with a healthy habits to support mental health class with Irby Psychological. We are thrilled to have the partnership with these professionals give us insight and help us reach our maximum potential as a preschool. Our teachers strive to structure their classroom for success and use positive learning strategies to best meet the needs of our students. GUMP administration continues to provide the opportunity for growth and development for our teachers. If you or someone you know is interested in our preschool program, please contact us at (901)753-3109. We would love to tell you about the wonderful things happening here!

Did you know September 22 is not only the first day of fall, but also Annual Fall Prevention Day? Falls are a leading cause of injury and death. They can result in serious complications such as fractures, head injuries, and a decreased quality of life. Effective fall prevention requires a multifaceted approach, involving: identifying risk factors, environmental modifications, and personal health management.
To effectively prevent falls, it’s essential to understand the various risk factors. These include age, health conditions, and medications that can cause dizziness. Environmental hazards like clutter and poor lighting, as well as vision and hearing impairment can also increase fall risk.
Creating a safe living environment is crucial for fall prevention. Simple modifications like removing trip hazards such as cords, rugs, and furniture, and ensuring that all areas are well-lit, can greatly reduce the risk of a fall. Also, adding non-slip backing to rugs, non-slip mats and grab bars to bathrooms, and handrails on both sides of staircases can help prevent slipping.
Maintaining personal health is vital for fall prevention. Regularly engaging in activities that incorporate balance and strength training like yoga, Tai Chi, and even walking can enhance physical fitness, muscular strength, and stability. Make sure to wear well-fitting, non-slip shoes and avoid walking in socks or slippers on slippery surfaces. Also, working with your medical provider to effectively manage chronic conditions, reviewing medications, and regularly checking one’s hearing and vision can help to mitigate fall risk.
For older adults, additional precautions can be important, such as using assistive devices, like canes or walkers, if recommended by a healthcare provider. Resources are available to help educate seniors about fall risks and preventive strategies, like communitybased fall prevention programs and workshops, as well as professionals who can conduct home safety assessments.
Susan Crowson, Staff Liaison | scrowson@germantownumc.org | 901-758-6508
...Continued
Even with the right precautions, falls can still happen. Having a response plan that includes how to get help, how to safely get up after a fall, and ensuring that exits are accessible and free of obstacles can be crucial in an emergency fall situation. Medical alert systems and personal alarm devices can also be very useful in calling for help quickly if a fall does occur.
Preventing falls is a critical aspect of maintaining safety and well-being, especially for older adults. By addressing risk factors, environmental hazards, and personal health management, we can significantly reduce the risk of falls and enhance overall quality of life. Implementing these strategies requires a proactive approach and commitment to creating safer environments and healthier lifestyles. Through collective effort and vigilance, we can make a substantial difference in fall prevention and ensure a safer future for everyone.

Music Ministry

Fall Brings New Beginnings
Psalm 127:2 speaks of rest: “for he gives sleep to his beloved.” Beloved, the time of resting is nearly complete. The music ministry program year is upon us. We are blessed to offer multiple ensembles for your participation.
You already know how important music is for a person's social, physical, and cognitive development, but being in a church choir also provides the opportunity for your child to learn more about God through music and serve the church by actively participating in the worship experience.
Wesley Ringers hand chimes choir for 3rd through 5th graders begins September 4, at 5:30 pm, just prior to WOW night. Wesley Ringers meet in the handbell studio near the Welcome Center entrance. Andrѐ Duvall leads this group.
Testimony Youth Choir (for middle and high schoolers) and all our children’s choirs begin Sunday, September 8, at 5:00 pm. Children’s choirs meet in the children’s education wing on the second floor; Testimony Choir meets in the choir suite on the first floor.
We extend our desire to continue the habit of regular attendance. This helps us maintain fundamental musical and spiritual development of our GUMC children.
If you have any questions, please contact any one of us.
Every Sunday, we need two acolytes for each traditional worship service. Children must be in second grade or older to participate. There is no age limit! Click here to sign up, or scan this QR code.
If your child is interested in acolyting and hasn't been trained, reach out to Hayley Heard to schedule a mutually convenient training session.
Third Grade Bible Presentation & Retreat
Third graders will be presented with Bibles during all three worship services on September 29.
We will also have our annual Third Grade Bible Retreat on Friday, September 27, from 6-9 pm, on the main campus. We will start the evening with dinner and then move on to a special worship service for our 3rd graders. Afterwards, we will play some Biblecentric games and have loads of fun. Please register your child online for the retreat on our website under the Event Registrations tab or use the link provided on the following page.
Children’s Ministry
Natalie Adkinson, Director | nadkinson@germantownumc.org
Our mid-week elementary program, which runs during the school year, provides a variety of opportunities for children to experience Christian fellowship. This is our children’s ministry equivalent of “youth group”. We have a child-friendly dinner in the fellowship hall from 6-6:30 pm followed by a variety of fun and engaging activities. Pick up for elementary children is in the education wing at 7:30 pm. This fall, the kids will enjoy water games, Bible trivia, a scavenger hunt, Bible bingo, pumpkin painting, Room in the Inn mission night, and much more! Registration is required by noon each Tuesday so we can plan for food.
Oops, Your Manners are Showing!
10-week class (starting Sept 4) for children ages 2 - 5 (PreKindergarten)
Wednesdays, 6-7:30 pm (during WOW) | Hamilton Nursery
For Ages 2 5 Scripture is rich in examples of good manners, and the younger a child can learn about showing God’s love to others, the more natural it will become. In addition to a weekly Bible story and craft, children will practice skills such as saying kind words, sharing with others, displaying table manners, helping at home, and being thankful. Parents will check their preschoolers into the nursery before going downstairs to fix a dinner plate to bring to their child. Registration for WOW is required by noon each Tuesday.
Learning to Use My Bible
6-week class for 3rd graders (starting Oct. 2)
Wednesdays, 6-7:30 pm (during WOW)
Carla McCrary and Janice Cate will teach “Learning to Use My Bible” on Wednesday nights (Oct. 2 - Nov. 13) as part of our WOW programming. The kids will eat dinner with the large group, then move into a small group for their special Bible class. Registration for WOW is required.
We are looking for adults who would like to serve as small group leaders for Worship on Wednesday. If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering for our ministry, please contact Natalie Adkinson (nadkinson@germantownumc.org).

Summer Recap
Grove,
Director
of High School Ministries | cgrove@germantownumc.org
GUMC Youth had a wonderfully eventful 2024 summer! We started the summer off strong with Vacation Bible School. Dozens of youth volunteered at VBS to give the children the best week possible. The youth helped with both pre-school and elementary students by leading games, songs, crafts, story time, and serving as group leaders. Our first mission trip of the summer was Service Over Self, which is an urban home repair ministry located here in Memphis. During the week, our students worked in the blazing heat to repair roofs for those in need. After SOS, a group of students accompanied Collierville UMC’s youth group to participate in Mountain TOP, a rural home repair mission in Cumberland, Tennessee. Our group had such a fun time forming a community with both the people they served and the other MTOP campers. We also enjoyed 901 Mission Camp, a local GUMC service camp that seeks to address the needs of our community right here at home. This summer has been filled with learning, fun, community, and love. We are looking forward to a school semester that is filled with much of the same!
On Sunday, August 18, GUMC Youth successfully kicked off the 2024 Fall semester with Element Olympics. Fifty youth were in attendance. We had an incredible time eating tacos and competing against each other in games such as reverse charades, the floor is lava, and, our final event, the three-legged race. Congratulations to the winners of the night the orange team! What a fantastic way to start out the year!
