Expecting the Lord

DECEMBER 2024

Advent is a season of Expectation leading to Christmas. In the Gospel of Luke is a story of Mary and Joseph coming to the Temple with the infant Jesus. While at the Temple, they meet Simeon, who is a perfect example of one who lived in expectation of the Lord’s coming.

Mary and Joseph went to the Temple to fulfill the law, which called for the firstborn to be dedicated to the Lord and required a woman to offer a sacrifice of purification following childbirth. They offered two turtledoves at the Temple, an offering allowed for persons who were poor.

They arrived at the Temple only to be greeted by a stranger to them named Simeon. Simeon was righteous and devout, obedient to the law, and he treated others with justice and mercy. Such are the ones that tend to be prepared, who make every day a day to serve the Lord.

God had prepared Simeon for this moment, promising Simeon that he would see the Savior before he died. When Simeon saw the infant Jesus, Simeon followed the leading of the Spirit, and holding the child, he sang:

“Master, now you are dismissing your servant * in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation.”

This was a risky thing for an old man to be singing in the Temple at that time. Next to the Temple was a Roman fort, and Roman soldiers, loyal to Caesar and Herod, were stationed in the outer Temple precincts. Herod’s palace was quite visible across the city. And yet Simeon publicly sang that he had seen God’s salvation, not in political or military means, not in Caesar or in Herod, but in Christ. This is the central tenet of the Christian faith. Christ is not just the bringer of salvation, but Christ is salvation personified.

We still hold the hope of Christ as our salvation, peace, and light to show us the way. Each year, we are drawn to the innocence of the Christ child, the faith of Mary and Joseph, the wonder of the shepherds, and to the joy of an old man with tears in his eyes, praising God for a child who would be salvation for the world.

This Christmas, like Simeon, may we live in expectation of Christ’s return, declaring him to be our salvation.

Tim Carpenter Senior Pastor

Executive Minister

Thanksgiving has passed. The Black Friday Christmas shopping hustle and bustle is behind us. Many people have begun decorating and putting up their Christmas trees and playing Christmas carols. However, the Church does something else. The Church holds back, because it’s not time.

The Christmas season does not arrive until the evening of December 24. What we begin this year on December 1 is the season of Advent a brand new liturgical year, with a new set of lectionary readings, a new cycle of remembrance and spiritual growth.

In many ways, we sometimes have not treated Advent as what it truly is. In some ways, I think that we look at Advent as a pre-Christmas season, where we get ready for the baby to arrive. I’ve heard some people, over the years, get bent out of shape that we don’t sing Christmas carols every Sunday in December.

To be sure, Advent does have some connection with the Christmas story, but what it does is to put Christmas in its proper place, not as a comforting winter rest stop that warms us with the joys of a cuddly baby. Instead, Advent reminds us that Christmas is nothing less than the powerful inbreaking of God, who, through the birth of his son, makes all things new. Advent, then, is a season for remembering and celebrating the culmination of all things through the Incarnation of God.

When we open ourselves to what Advent truly is, when we allow our souls to experience what the Holy can do through these four weeks, I believe that we can direct our attention away from how our culture tries to define Christmas, and toward the prophetic truths we hear in the voices that call us to make way for the Kingdom of God.

From Isaiah to John the Baptist to Jesus, we hear how the reign of God brings an ending to all powers that run contrary to God’s way. The more we examine the world around us, the more we see that the end these prophets proclaim is an end that needs to come.

Advent, then, is our reminder that the Kingdom of God will come in all its glory, so we need to be ready.

On behalf of the people, Isaiah calls out to God: “O, that you would tear open the heavens and come down…make your name known do not remember our sins forever.” Isaiah knew that the only way out of the brokenness and despair was for God to make his presence known once again, to bring an end to the present way of suffering and destruction, and to establish a new way of life and joy.

We, too, must long for and call out for God to do a new thing and usher in a new day. Yet, what we realize in Advent is that little twinkle lights won’t do this, shopping our checkbooks into the red can’t do this, and only participating in the cute and cuddly side of the Christmas story won’t bring it.

The end to our brokenness and despair that begins a new day can only be brought by the powerful inbreaking of God through Jesus Christ. Advent, then, is our reminder that the Kingdom of God will come in all its glory, so we need to be ready.

We are called to keep awake.

Join us on Sunday mornings at Prism, this December as we celebrate the season with our Advent series: “The Music, Mission, and Magic of Christmas!”

Each week we will focus on some of our most treasured Christmas Hymns and have spectacular music from the Prism Riot band to match. We will look closely at the scriptures and stories that inspired the writing of these famous hymns, and we will reflect upon our mission for the world around us during this season of celebration.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars to attend the Germantown Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 14, at 2 pm, because this will be the first time we will have a float in the parade. Our very own Prism Riot band will be playing Christmas music throughout the procession! Let us know if you want to walk alongside the float that day, so we can schedule you in the lineup. If you are interested, email me at: mwhite@germantownumc.org

2025 Estimate of Giving

Christmas is not a jolly time for everyone. For some, Christmas is complicated. While there is joy about celebrating the birth of Christ, there may be grieving over a relative or friend, a divorce, or a change in living circumstances.

Facing the first Christmas when things have changed can be a very lonely and daunting time. Everyone handles their emotions and reactions differently. Some will not want to engage with the “normal” Christmas tasks, while others will want to engage as a symbol of moving on.

Here are some tips for the holiday season.

• Don’t put excessive expectations on yourself.

• Rest.

• Give yourself permission to not do the things that you’re finding hard writing Christmas cards, putting up the tree, going to Christmas parties. It’s all right to let these go, this year or next, until you can cope with social events again.

• Make a point of remembering your loved one in a special way. Light a candle for them on Christmas day or place an ornament on the Christmas tree to symbolize them.

• Allow yourself to grieve. The days leading up to Christmas (and other significant days on the calendar) can heighten your grief. Tell a friend you need support. Give yourself permission to cry. Address depression; don’t deny it.

• Forgive and receive forgiveness through Jesus. Release everything to the Lord, including any regrets.

What can we do?

If you know someone who is grieving this Christmas, give them a call, write them a special card, invite them over for a quiet get together, speak up and acknowledge their loss.

“So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.”

Don Rhoads – Adult Christian Education Leader

Don Rhoads has served on the Christian Education Committee for SIX years with four of those years as Chair of Christian Education. Don will rotate off the Christian Education Committee at the end of 2024. It is difficult to come up with adequate words to describe how much his efforts have meant to adult education here at GUMC. With unwavering commitment, Don has guided the Education Committee and adult Sunday school classes through:

 The return to in-person Sunday school after COVID

 The re-location of Sunday school classes with one Sunday school hour

 Serving on the Space Utilization Committee doing much of the preliminary drawings for the Chapel renovations

 Designing a survey distributed to all the adult Sunday school classes to help identify needs, areas of strength, and areas classes could improve which has helped the Christian Education Committee to set goals and make plans for the next several years

 Most recently, forming an “Audio-Visual” Committee to ascertain individual classroom needs

In addition, Don is a BUSY adult Sunday school teacher, who puts in much time in study, preparing lessons for our adult classes. Don is one of our most requested teachers.

Don has played a vital role in the life and growth of our adult education programs, dedicating his time, energy, and talents to support various educational activities. Thank you, Don, for saying “yes” when asked to become a part of the leadership of GUMC! You are there when we need you. You are available at extra times, and, best of all, you back up what you do with a life of faith. We value your ministry among us.

Bread Ministry meeting January 9, 10:00 am | Room 339

I have been praying and dreaming about this project for some time now. I pray you’ll respond in a manner that helps it come to life. We are fortunate to have two nearly commercial kitchens on our campus. They get used occasionally for big events and help those events run smoothly. I’m proposing we gather the strength of our bakers and put these kitchens to more regular use with the GUMC Bread Ministry!

I envision a group of bakers gathering to master a provided recipe and then sharing the results of the baking with folks in need perhaps participants of Jacob’s Well ministry at First UMC downtown. Interested parties will meet on Thursday, January 9, at 10:00 am in room 339.

GUMC Thanksgiving Dinner

On Wednesday evening, November 20, the week before the Thanksgiving holiday, our church family gathered in the OLEC gym for a delicious buffet of turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings, plus scrumptious desserts for all. The tables were beautifully decorated by our United Women in Faith members. We broke bread, shared our stories, and enjoyed fellowship with one another.

It was so special celebrating this season of thankfulness together as a church family. A big THANK YOU to all who made it happen.

Update: Another Male High School Graduate!

We are excited to share that we have our eighth Alturas graduate: Marvin (Silvia’s son.) That is only possible due to your gifts of school supplies, uniforms, tutoring, etc.!

The children of Lomas Del Rio live in a dirty, impoverished slum in one of the poorest areas of Costa Rica. Basic utilities are in short supply. Crime runs rampant. Education is almost non-existent. The local government is powerless to help.

GUMC is helping kids to flee offers of gangs, drugs, etc. In time, we see the fruit of all of GUMC’s investment into the Alturas kids of Lomas del Rio, Pavas area.

Hey GUMC!

Let’s help an Alturas child celebrate Christmas and prepare for school with uniforms and school supplies!

God has been so good this year, and we are so thankful to you our kids’ GUMC Godparents because we have seen much progress! In December, we have our Christmas party, in January, we have the start of school.

Below is a description of opportunities to help:

$150 for an elementary child to receive clothes, shoes, and a Christmas present. (Need:37)

$250 for a high school kid to buy two uniform shirts pants, socks, a belt, shoes, and a PE uniform. (Need:23)

Zoe Empowers mission trip to Kenya

We were only thirty minutes into our two-hour drive when the paved road ended, and what lay ahead was a dirt road full of ruts and potholes. My companions in this van were five members from St. Luke UMC, in Pensacola, who graciously agreed to accompany me on this journey to visit a Zoe Empowers group, Bidii Nkondi. My wife, Cathy, and I partnered with this group of orphans to honor her father who passed away one year before she passed. I called this a mission trip, but it is so unlike any mission trip that I had been on before. We were not in Kenya to fix, to do, or to show how to. We were there to observe, encourage, show love and support. This was the ninth Zoe Empowers group that Cathy and I, and other members of GUMC, supported since 2010.

- September 2024

When we finally reached Theraka, my watch said that I had just completed over 16,000 steps in this two hour journey! But the journey was worth it, as we were met by 25 orphaned, head-of-household teenagers in their second of a three-year program, singing and dancing for us. We were told that their song spoke of what life was like before the Zoe program: no secure food or housing, no income, no self-dignity or self-worth, and hopelessness. And now, already in their second year, they were starting to thrive. They told us about the transformative power of the Zoe program. They were already young entrepreneurs, having started businesses of their choosing in their first year. The money donated, through our partnership, bought them starter kits for their businesses, helped to make their housing more secure, and paid for new latrines and other hygiene improvements. Each child shared what life was like before Zoe, contrasting with their current life. Each story was filled with emotion and thanksgiving to God for having had the privilege to enter into this program.

Bill with three Bidii

We then visited two of their businesses a dress-making shop and a hair salon. Many group members start a second or third business, and they all participate in a group incomegenerating project as well.

One afternoon, I had the opportunity to meet with three graduates of Bidii Antubeiga, a group that was supported by a team of GUMC members, after attending a virtual tour in 2020. These three entrepreneurs graduated in 2023. William has a welding business, employing two other workers. Elosie is an owner of a hair salon and is the most sought after hairdresser in her community. Martin sells new clothes and has a dream of having his own clothing line in five years. They have come so far in four years!

Just look at the joy on their faces of the Bidii Nkondi group and how beautifully they are dressed. Continued...

Antubeiga graduates.

The second group I visited was Umoja Mbaranga, a group that I partnered with to honor the passing of Cathy. They just completed their first year. We were met again by singing and dancing of native tunes and rhythms, telling their stories. It was almost like listening to the singing of a Psalm.

The Zoe Program is open to all children who are heads-of-households regardless of religious preference. Trained Zoe social workers use the Bible to illustrate key life lessons. For example, Joseph, who was abandoned by his brothers, through hard work and integrity, became a leader in Egypt and forgave those who mistreated him. The crippled man, forgotten by his neighbors, was healed by Jesus, at the pool of Bethesda, when Jesus said, “Take up your mat and walk.” There is hope in all circumstances, even when you had nearly given up.

Joy Muurune Group - 2019

Vulnerable children at their first Zoe group meeting.

These visits are contrasted by a visit in 2019, with a then recently formed group. Cathy and I were traveling with Mel and Marcia Headley and David and Karen Oppenheim, along with eight other team members from the southeast. A Zoe social worker, Reegan, asked the children, “Who has not eaten in the past twenty-four hours?” Several raised their hands. We expected Reegan to go to his truck and get a box of food. Instead, he asked the group, “Who has enough food that you can feed your brothers and sisters?” Three children raised their hands, and Reegan said, “Feed your brothers and sisters.” This began a group relationship-building that is at the core of Zoe’s success. These children rely on each other, support one another, engage in group projects, and stay connected after their three-year program is complete.

Our greeting by Umoja Mbaranga.

YOUR CHURCH TRUSTEES at work...

The final steps are being taken in our chapel, as we prepare to move into this refurbished worship space. The building itself dates back to 1929, but the last known update of the chapel was done in the 1950’s, when the pews were added to replace the theatre chairs, the red carpet and vinyl flooring were added, and the lighting was installed.

The updates made in the chapel this year were to bring it up to the levels expected for a worship space in 2024. However, the value that this space has provided for our church for almost 100 years was not forgotten. Our stained-glass windows are a highlight because we have the only ones among the chapels in the ‘Old Germantown’ section. The new trim and paint scheme in the chapel give extra focus to their beauty.

Solid hardwood floors were laid throughout the chapel extending into the vestibule and prayer room. A new platform was added at the front of the chapel to accent the altar area but allow easier access from all sides. Additionally, the doorways were widened from the hallway into the chapel to give us the needed disability access.

A new trim accent was added to encircle the room, giving us the opportunity to use more than one paint color in the chapel. The accent trim color gives us a more visible background for our stained-glass windows.

The lighting was totally redesigned to include recessed can lights throughout the room. This gives us as much light as we want, but also dims to a “candlelight” type setting when needed. New lanterns were hung in the middle of the room to add a decorative touch, and spotlights were added to accent the platform area.

The pews were removed from the chapel, and many were taken by members of our church to reside in their homes or other places of honor. Two of the pews will be reinstalled on the back wall of the chapel, to keep the continuity of our past. Also, some of the pews were reworked into remembrances for the redesigned chapel, including pew end caps that were remade to display the brass plates mounted on each of the 26 pews when they were installed in 1953. Pews were also cut down into two shorter ones for seating on the new platform, and wood from the pews was used to create a large cross hung on the back wall.

The baby grand piano, that was originally purchased for the sanctuary in 1977, has also received a “makeover” and now sits in the chapel to be enjoyed for many more years to come! Musical programs will be scheduled in the coming months for people to enjoy the music from this instrument in its new space.

Audio and visual equipment including a ceiling-mounted projector, a roll-down screen, and a sound system were also added to the chapel, to ensure that the chapel can be integrated into various church programs. A grant for this equipment was received from our endowment fund.

...Continued

I also want to give a great big THANK YOU to the “woodworking” members of our congregation, who reworked our pews, pulpit, altar, and table for the back corner of the chapel (to match an existing one.) Thanks to Mel Headley, Mike Ritz, and John Ueleke for their skills and generosity.

This chapel refurbishment was made possible by generous gifts from long-time members of our church, to ensure that it remains a respected and well-used place of worship for years to come. Designated gift accounts have also been created for any who would like to add their gifts for the chapel and the piano that was restored for the chapel.

The Board of Trustees values the input of all of our church members and welcomes any ideas that you have to enhance our property. We will be delighted to review and work with you to bring your ideas to fruition. Remember that the Trustees are responsible for our church property, so please be sure to contact myself or Anne Bush before starting any project. This allows the church to be informed in advance of the action and provide the needed approval.

I know I speak for all of us when I say we are grateful for our church and how it shows our belief in each other and our place in this community.

Join us! On December 8, following the 11 am traditional worship service, we will have a rededication of the chapel.

XYZs Hear the Music of The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in February!

The Electric Light Orchestra Experience featuring Evil Woman - The American ELO is a multimedia concert celebration of the music of ELO. Audiences are spellbound by the musicianship of Evil Woman’s 12 musicians, when violins, violas, and cellos co-exist with electric guitars at the junction where classic rock intersects pop. Their attention to detail on their vocal harmonies and string arrangements is amazingly accurate to the original ELO recordings. Their hits include “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Sweet Talkin’ Woman,” “Livin’ Thing,” “Evil Woman,” and many more. Come with us and have a blast with Evil Woman – The American ELO!

Luke: Gut-Level Compassion

Wednesdays, January 8 – February 19, 9:45-11:45 am; via Zoom.

Facilitator: Chesley Porteous; Cost: $20.00

The great news woven throughout the Gospel of Luke is that perfection is not a prerequisite for a deep and personal relationship with Jesus. Join us for this 7-session study of a literary masterpiece that doesn’t celebrate the elite, but embraces the outliers, outcasts, and overlooked!

Four Parables from Luke

Tuesdays, January 14 – February 4; 10:30-12:00 noon

Facilitator: Rev. Todd Wilson; Cost: $10.00

Join Rev. Todd Wilson as we take a closer look at the teaching form Jesus so often the parable. We will focus on four parables, while using Adam Hamilton’s book on the Gospel of Luke, our denominational hymnal, and our own creativity.

The Gospel of John A Beginner’s Guide to the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Tuesdays, January 21 – March 4; 9:30-11:00 am

Facilitator: Mary Groh; Cost: $15.00

John’s Gospel offers readers a new language that enhances how we understand the divine, how we experience the world, and how we participate in the mystery of faith. Join us for this 7-session study by Dr. Amy Jill Levine as she helps us understand how the Gospel was understood by its earliest readers, how it has been interpreted traditionally, and, finally, how Christians today should receive it and act in its light, which is the light of Christ.

Germantown United Women in Faith (GUWF)

Saturday, December 14, 2024, 9 am to 12 noon

Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall

Please put it on your calendar! The GUWF Christmas Cookie Shoppe at Germantown United Methodist Church is an opportunity for church members and friends to purchase festive and beautiful homemade cookies and candies to enjoy or give as gifts during the Christmas holidays. The funds raised will be given to the missions supported by the Germantown United Women in Faith.

All who attend will receive a bakery box and gloves before walking through the Fellowship Hall, selecting from over one hundred different cookies and candies that are labeled and beautifully displayed.

After choices are made, the boxes will be weighed and sold for $10.00 per pound. There will be one pre-order day on December 8 to order cookies if you cannot attend the sale. Payment is required at the time of your order.

To make this a successful and fun event, we need everyone’s help! Between now and December 13, we need volunteers to bake 12 dozen of one kind of cookie (approximately 3-4 batches of this one cookie recipe). Cookies can be frozen if appropriately wrapped. We are so grateful for your hard work in making these beautiful treats, so make sure you pack them carefully! If you cannot bake, but still want to help, donations are appreciated, and there are many volunteer opportunities available.

Get creative! We want cookies that are made from scratch and out of the ordinary, so that we can offer our members, friends, and family incredibly special holiday treats. PLEASE, NO CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES! We will have some available because everyone loves them, but we could have too many!!!

Please bring your cookies to the church Fellowship Hall on Friday, December 13, any time before 3 pm.

For more information and to sign up to make some cookies, you can do one of the following:

 Scan the QR code to the right.

 Go to the GUWF Christmas Cookie Shoppe SignupGenius by clicking on Cookies

 Contact Jan Corkern, jancorkern@yahoo.com, or Barbara Schanson, barcons@comcast.net, co-chairs of this event. You do not have to be active in a GUWF Circle all GUMC women are members of Germantown United Women in Faith! We need your help to raise significant funds for so many worthy causes!!!!

Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Our friends at Germantown United Methodist Preschool have been busy learning and playing, as we celebrate the changes and wonders of the season. You can feel the joy in each of the classrooms. We even had a surprise visit from Santa! This month our 3, 4 and 5-year-old friends will join together to have a special chapel, “Journey through Bethlehem,” with Ms. Natalie. What a special time it will be together! All of our little friends will have a special Christmas program, where they will perform for their families. Also, in the classroom, our friends will celebrate Christmas with a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” birthday party, so that, as we break for Christmas, our focus is on the true Reason for the Season.

GUMP enrollment for the 2025/26 school year is around the corner. We are already becoming busy with increasing parent/child interviews for prospective families. Open enrollment for the upcoming school year will begin in January, giving church members and current families priority of re-enrollment, and then moving to applications from prospective new families. If you or someone you know is looking for a wonderful play-based preschool, please call us at 901-753-3109. We would love to share all the amazing things happening here!

Before we end our first semester, GUMP wants to wish each of you a Merry Christmas! As the Christmas season is upon us, we joyfully celebrate the birth of baby Jesus! What a sweet time of year to share God’s love with our little friends. We look forward to seeing everyone January 7.

All meals, snacks, outdoor activities, crafts, worship, instruction, sweatshirt, lodging, bedding, and towels are provided and included with the registration fee. All fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, and their friends, are invited. Drop off will be at 4 pm on Saturday, January 25. Pickup will be at 4 pm on Sunday. CRAVE 2024!!!

at Victory Ranch

GUMC Youth had an absolute blast at Victory Ranch for our Crave retreat! We had a big crowd, with 53 kids as well as our dedicated adult volunteers, who were willing to sacrifice sleep for our students. After loading up the three buses and driving to Victory Ranch, we started out the weekend with some great food and worship, an indicator of the fantastic weekend to come. Saturday, after breakfast, worship, and devotional, the youth split into their four teams and did activities, such as team building, giant swing, high ropes course, and laser tag, with a break in the middle of the day for lunch. In the late afternoon, we enjoyed some free time before dinner and our Saturday night worship. Connecting with God and our community, away from our phones, was really a wonderful opportunity, and we left this weekend closer to God and each other!

The past few months have been busy ones for GUMC youth! Since Crave, we have had our annual dodgeball tournament affectionately referred to as Turkey Bowl and our Friendsgiving celebration!

We’re looking forward to our Element gift exchange this month, as well as helping support other church events, such as Journey to Bethlehem, Room in the Inn, and the Advent Processional. It has truly been a busy season, and we are thankful to our church community for supporting us in our programming and giving us the opportunity to give back that support during this holiday season.
