The Risen Savior’s Discovery

April 20 is Easter Sunday, and we will join to hear the story of the resurrection. In John 20:1-18, Mary Magdalene discovered a stone rolled away from the tomb. Peter and John, upon hearing the news, ran to the tomb and discovered that it was empty of Jesus’ body, seeing only the grave cloths inside. They went home confused. Peter and John walked away from the tomb, leaving Mary Magdalene alone in her tears. At first glance, this act seems inconsiderate. Maybe they were simply overcome by their own grief and confusion. Perhaps Peter and John did not believe she was worthy of discussing all this, as the prevailing opinion in that culture was that the testimony of women was not legitimate.

Alone and weeping, Mary looked inside and saw two angels, who asked her why she was weeping. Before she could answer, someone, whom she thought was the gardener, asked her the same question. She replied, “They have taken my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Then the person called her name. She recognized that it was Jesus. As Jesus said in John 10:3, “The watchman opens the gate for the shepherd, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” Mary, upon hearing her name, knew the shepherd’s voice.

We might say that Mary Magdalene discovered the Risen Savior, but, in fact, the Risen Savior had first come to her. Jesus honored Mary Magdalene by coming to her before any others.

It’s interesting that Jesus and the angels waited for Peter and John to leave before having this conversation with Mary Magdalene. In a similar way as his birth, which was announced by angels to lowly, forgotten, shepherds, Jesus and the angels appear first, after the resurrection, to someone who was alone and forgotten. By seeking Mary Magdalene first, Jesus gracefully ministers to her pain of mourning his death and being shunned by the head disciples. In the scripture, Jesus often comforted those who had been neglected by religious leaders.

Notice, Jesus then gave Mary Magdalene a responsibility. He said, “Go to my brothers,” to the very ones who had just left her alone. Perhaps the most healing thing he did for Mary Magdalene was to entrust her with the announcement that he was alive. She became the first evangelist of the risen Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas called her “the apostle to the apostles.”

Mary began the day seeking the dead body of Jesus but was discovered by a risen savior. When she thought she spoke to a gardener, she was speaking to the Master. When she didn’t recognize him, he called her by name. When she couldn’t find him, he found her. And when he found her, she discovered unbounded joy and life. She discovered the grace of God, which, in Christ, seeks us out and brings life overflowing. The Risen Savior found Mary Magdalene and seeks to bring peace, compassion, and healing to all who would receive him with joy.

Fiscal Year

Calendar Year vs.

For the past several months, the Finance Committee and Church Board have been working toward a change in our fiscal year moving away from the calendar year to a July-June fiscal year. There are many advantages to this approach in our financial management.

• Moves the budget planning and adoption away from extra busy holiday months to better evaluate and plan.

• Typically, higher giving months are placed mid-year rather than at the “bookends.”

• Slower giving months, usually June and July, are split between two fiscal years.

• A July 1 fiscal year better reflects our church’s natural program cycle.

• There are no consequences for tax deductible gifts, as giving statements will still be sent in January reflecting the calendar year.

• Allows financial staff to better focus on necessary calendar year-end items of giving statements and denominational reporting.

• Provides the freedom to talk about generosity as discipleship apart from stewardship as management.

• Most members will never realize it in their day-to-day participation in the church.

• We can align the church budget with the GUMP budget.

• GUMC has been adopting a new budget 2-3 months into the new budget year, and this approach will allow for better timing of that process.

• It costs the church nothing to make this change.

At the February Church Board meeting, we adopted a January-June 2025 budget, and we are now actively working on the new one for our new July 2025-June 2026 fiscal year. In fact, if you haven’t already, you will soon see a narrative version of what GUMC needs to fully fund the work of Christ through our church. I applaud the hard work of our Finance Committee and Church Board in making this positive change in our stewardship.

Additionally, I invite all of us to prayerfully search for where God wants us to be in our personal giving. The valuable ministries of our church, from the electric bill to the missional support that reaches around the world, only happen because of our generosity. As our generosity grows, so does our ministry. Deepening our discipleship involves walking along the pathway to generosity.

What’s your next step along the giving path? I invite you to take it.

During Lent, many people like to pick up a new practice (such as Scripture reading or serving others) as opposed to giving something up for 40 days. Prism has great opportunities for anyone to be of service. In fact, Prism could not happen without the help of our volunteer teams. If you are looking for a meaningful way to observe Lent, here are some opportunities for service on Sunday mornings.

It is through the generous giving of our time, talents, prayers, presence, and resources that we are able to sustain the amazing ministry that Prism is. Serving others through the gift of our time and talents on Sunday mornings is how we make Prism happen, and right now we really need your help!

Thank you so much to all our volunteers, who keep us going each week! You are such an incredible blessing to this Jesus-following community, and we wouldn’t exist without you! For everyone else who loves Prism, please consider serving once a month, in the special way God has gifted you, so we can keep Prism going strong!

Flower Ministry Testimonials

With the help of faithful volunteers, the Elder Care Ministry has a long tradition of “gifting” homebound members with a flower delivery (bouquets repurposed from Sunday worship floral arrangements.) The flowers are for those who can no longer be active on a regular basis, but who have served the church faithfully in healthier and more youthful times past. Here are a few testimonials we’ve received from these recipients:

“So appreciative for the flowers delivered today and for the flower ministry as a whole. Until you are on the receiving end, one just doesn’t appreciatethem as much. What a joy to see a beautiful fall arrangement for our 60th wedding anniversary. It is especially meaningful, because mywife is sick and not doing well.”

“To all servants of Christ in theFlower Ministry- Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers broughtto me by smiling Caroletoday. It is theinvisiblehug they bring that reminds me of thewonder and blessing of “community” that we share here at GUMC.For every hand and heart that served in preparation and delivery of this lovely gift,I amforever grateful.”

All of life has challenges. The season we face as we age is no different. But the challenges we face take on a different quality, as deep reflection time is made available, as children have grown up, as we retire, as we downsize, or as we just experience life differently than we did in our younger years.

The spiritual needs for those of us over 65 include:

• The need to find meaning and purpose in life

• The need for belonging

• The need for connectedness

• The need for inner peace

• The need for love

• The need to be understood

• The need for forgiveness, hope, and trust

• The need to explore beliefs and values

• The need to prepare for whatever is next.

In closing, receive this prayer, written by Joyce Rupp:

Richard Mattox and I are here to walk the journey with you. Elder Care Ministry at GUMC has many resources available to you. If you find yourself in need of exploration, or just interested in beginning the conversation, give us a call. We are here for you.

Gracious God, enlarge my capacity to give and receive love in these elderhood years that I call ‘my life.’

During the times I doubt my significance, show me how I truly do matter to you.

May I see ever more clearly how my life has been graced in hardship and in happiness.

When loneliness stalks me, turn my attention to the ways that I can reach out to others.

Thank you for how I have grown more loving and wiser in my relationships as I have aged.

Help me to accept the increasing emptiness when yet another beloved person departs.

May I remember to lean on you when I am feeling defeated, vulnerable, or insecure.

Teach me the worth of slowing down in order to experience life more wholeheartedly.

Guide me as I attempt to peacefully weave together the threads of my inner and outer life.

Loving God, you desire that I accept myself as the person you fashioned with love many years ago.

I will open my entire being to you as fully as I am able.

I trust that you love me as I am and that you will stay by me in these eldering years.

Amen

Holy Thursday Service April 17 | 7 pm | Sanctuary

The Testimony Youth Choir, Element Youth Praise Band, and other youth ministry volunteers invite you to journey through the last days of our Savior’s life.

The Shadow of the Cross is a musical and scriptural journey through the passion narrative that will be presented on Holy Thursday, April 17, in the sanctuary. Accompanying the service will be several local instrumentalists.

This is a moving service that calls us to pause and reflect on the sacrifice made for humanity through the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus' death before we celebrate the resurrection.

Children’s Choirs Concert and 5th Grade Choir Recognition

Sunday, May 4 | 5 pm | Sanctuary

May 4, 2025 promises to be a wonderful day at GUMC! The Cherub, Alleluia, and Hosanna choirs offer their Spring Children’s Choirs Concert. Alleluia and Hosanna Choirs (kindergarten-5th grades) will present a musical, “Rescue in the Night,” by Allen Pote, which highlights the story of Daniel in the lion’s den. This musical offers the opportunity to meet the conceited King Darius, the conniving Advisors, and of course, Daniel! There are over a dozen songs in the musical, most of which feature a soloist, duet, or trio of student performers. The children have been working on this since December and would love to have a large and loving audience!! Wonderful music will certainly be shared and received.

Another feature of this program is the presentation of hymnals to fifth graders. This is a recognition of our fifth grade students that will, next year, be Testimony Youth Choir participants. This is also an encouragement from the congregation that these youngsters continue to sing and offer their gift of song to the Lord. Please come and offer your gifts of presence and love to these young Choristers!

Topic: Protecting Against the Threat of Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

Speaker: Special Agent D. Brooks Sample, Department of Homeland Security

Special Agent Sample’s presentation is part of Project iGuardian, which offers presentations designed to inform parents and trusted adults about the threat of online child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA), how to implement preventive strategies, and how to report suspected abuse to law enforcement.

Danny Sample has been a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) since January 2018, starting his career at the HSI Calexico, CA office, where he investigated human smuggling/human trafficking cases before transitioning to child exploitation investigations. He transferred to HSI Memphis in December 2021, assigned to the Cyber Group, where he primarily investigates federal violations of child exploitation laws, as well as human trafficking and labor exploitation. He routinely works with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and other city and county law enforcement agencies on cases involving child exploitation and human trafficking.

Prior to joining Homeland Security, he spent 10 years on active duty in the Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. While in the Marine Corps, he served as a satellite communications operator for five years and then as a counterintelligence/human intelligence specialist for the last five years, deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Welcome Center Volunteers

This month, we shine the spotlight on our wonderful weekday welcome center volunteers. These dedicated individuals are the first faces people see as they enter GUMC. They answer the telephone and greet both members and guests with warmth and kindness. Because of their gift of hospitality and willingness to give of their time, our administrative assistants are able to focus on supporting GUMC’s clergy staff and program directors.

A big thank you goes to those who are currently volunteering at the welcome center desk: Debra Nimtz, Betty Duke, Beverly Rhoads, Elaine Fetzer, Hank Evans, Bart Watt, Myron Boswell, Linda Cunningham, Leanne Bailey, and Richard Mattox.

If you are interested in becoming a part of this team, contact our welcome center volunteer coordinator, Elaine Graber (egraber@germantownumc.org). There is no need to worry about being locked into a specific time slot or day of the week. Each month, Elaine emails a calendar to our volunteers with the days and times when a volunteer is needed. The volunteers let Elaine know what hours work best for them, and a schedule is created. You can work a few hours each week, a few hours once a month, or a few hours once a year every hour helps!

We are grateful for our welcome center volunteers. Be sure to thank them when you see their smiling faces!

All women are invited to share a catered meal, warm fellowship, and an inspirational message from Sarah Sutton, Director of Germantown United Methodist Preschool, on May 6, 2025, at 11:30 am, in the Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall.

Sarah has served as the Director of Germantown United Methodist Preschool (affectionately known as GUMP) since August 2014, a position to which she brings dedication, compassion, enthusiasm, and joy. An early childhood and daycare ministry of Germantown United Methodist Church, GUMP provides an educational, family atmosphere for approximately 140 children aged nine months to five years. Sarah and her staff are committed to the preschool’s mission to “partner with parents to provide a loving, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for children to grow to their fullest potential emotionally, socially, spiritually, physically, creatively, and cognitively.”

Before joining Germantown United Methodist Preschool, Sarah held an administrative role in the Diocese of Memphis. She also served as the Director of Shelby Residential & Vocational Services, Inc., an inclusive preschool now known as SRVS Kids. Sarah is originally from Kansas City, Missouri, and she graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education, with an emphasis on early childhood special education. In 2022, Sarah completed her master’s degree in management and leadership. Sarah has been married to her high school sweetheart, Bret, for almost 30 years. They have four children, two boys and two girls. In 2024, they adopted their fourth child, a precious little boy. Her oldest son and his wife blessed their family with an “amazing little red-headed baby boy in July 2023,” and she loves being a “Yaya.”

Sarah shared, “My purpose is to serve God’s children and to help create opportunities for them to reach their fullest potential. It is my honor to serve the Germantown United Methodist Church in the mission of ‘Loving God and loving others, serving Christ and sharing Him, transforming lives and making disciples.’”

Missions

We live our mission through three Cs: children, college-age young adults, and churches. All three Cs come together in our collaborative program model, through which college-age young adults implement literacy and social-emotional interventions with children, strategically housed in churches. We believe transformation happens through relationships. It is in the holy space between each C that transformation occurs.

To transform communities by engaging children, college-age young adults, and churches in purposeful relationships.

A word from Carrie Yoder, Executive Director of Project Transformation Tennessee

On behalf of Project Transformation, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Germantown UMC for your unwavering partnership and support of our ministry. Your commitment through prayer, presence, gifts, services, and witness has been invaluable, especially during a year filled with challenges. Together, we have seen the goodness and faithfulness of God in our collaborative efforts, and we have much to celebrate in Tennessee:

GUMC support

is vital to our mission of transforming communities by engaging children, college-age young adults, and churches in meaningful relationships in Memphis this past summer:

Memphis local college-age interns were supported with prayers, meals, and back-to-school financial gifts. children were served through reading, meals, books, prayers, and encouragement.

GUMC volunteers participated in reading with children.

GUMC hours were spent reading with children.

Women’s Faith Circle evaluated books for reading level assignments.

GUMC provided sponsorship for kids to experience the Children’s Museum on an interactive field trip!

10 51 12 126 51

Thank you for your dedication! Now, more than ever, our young people need opportunities to experience a beloved community and discover their God-given gifts. We kindly ask that GUMC continue to support Project Transformation Tennessee in GUMC missions.

How GUMC Members can help:

Read one-on-one with children! (June-July, Mon-Thurs, 9:15 am-12:15 pm) Project Transformation is looking for caring volunteers to read with our summer day camp participants. The literacy component of Project Transformation is an exciting opportunity for volunteers to interact with our children in a one-on-one setting. We welcome both individuals and groups! (GUMC reading week is June 16-19, 2025.)

Provide dinner for the college-age interns (June-July, Mon-Thurs, 5:40-7 pm) Churches, Sunday school classes, and circles from across the area will provide dinners for them at the Midland Ave. Wesley Center. This is a great opportunity to serve and get to know young people who are really making a difference!

Provide a family fun night meal! (Thurs, June 26 and Thurs, July 17, 5:30-7:15 pm) Once a month, we invite the children and families of our programs to a night of fellowship. The themed night (luau, carnival, sock hop, etc.) is always a highlight for our families, interns and volunteers! We invite church groups to provide the meals and participate in the fun.

Collect new books, healthy snacks, and supplies for the summer program. Project Transformation relies on support from our partner churches to provide supplies. Click here to visit our Amazon wish list at (https://a.co/0X0EARF) or scan the following QR code for a list of the most needed items.

Pray with Project Transformation Tennessee, whether or not you are able to serve directly with us. We invite you to join us in surrounding our children, young adults, families, churches, and volunteers in prayer. Other ways to serve include cash donations, making presentations to the program (such as life experience), in-kind services etc.

The summer camp will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, 584 E. McLamore Ave, Memphis, TN 38106.

ALTURAS MINISTRIES

Thanks to GUMC’s generosity, almost 60 kids were able to receive school uniform shirts, pants, socks, shoes, etc. In addition, each child received everything that was on the school’s supplies list for classes, including 13 hardback notebooks (one for each subject) and nice backpacks, both of which are very expensive in Costa Rica. Having these school supplies is so vital for each child, and GUMC is changing lives by being the kids’ “Godparents” who reflect God’s love and help in their hopeless situations.

It is so moving to see the Alturas kids embrace their backpacks, squealing or getting teary-eyed in relief as they finally have what they need. I wish all GUMC could witness this moment to understand the profound impact you’re making in the lives of each and every Alturas kid! Truly, GUMC has become a vessel for God’s kindness and abundant grace to be known internationally! Our Alturas kids send their love and thanks to all of you!

Our Handy Helpers are waiting for your call…

The Handy Helpers Ministry Team, sponsored by the Older Adult Council, lends a “helping hand” to older adults in our church who need assistance with small repair and maintenance jobs around the house.

WHAT TYPE OF JOBS DO HANDY HELPERS DO?

• Light maintenance and repairs, including small carpentry jobs, such as malfunctioning doors, locks, or windows.

• Minor electrical work, such as replacing light switches and light bulbs.

• Replacing smoke alarm batteries.

• Minor plumbing work, such as working on “running” toilets or leaky faucets.

• Other miscellaneous jobs are considered on an individual basis.

If you are planning a larger job for your house (repainting, wood replacement, remodeling) and would like a second opinion of what really needs to be done, call Handy Helpers, and they will send someone out to take a look and talk to you about it.

Handy Helpers do not work on large or small appliances, roofs, home decorating, or on jobs requiring tall ladders.

WHAT DOES THIS SERVICE COST?

The Handy Helpers service charges only for parts and materials used in the repair. There is NO charge for labor.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE HANDY HELPERS SERVICE:

You must be a member of Germantown United Methodist Church, have homeowners liability insurance, and be over 60 years of age.

To request assistance, please contact Ron or Nina Gaddy, 754-1238

Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP)

Spring is here! Here at GUMP, spring means happy voices on the playground, planting seeds in the classroom, conversations about bugs, and enjoying more sunshine! Last month, we celebrated with our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. We, the teachers and staff, would like to give our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to all the parents, families, and the church community for your continued support. What a gift it is to serve these precious children and their families.

Our classes have completed their unit on “Matters of the Heart.” Seeing our dramatic play areas transform into hospitals, dentist offices, veterinarian clinics, and more was so fun. We discussed community helpers and all the ways that they help us. Our older friends talked about careers that they might want to have. Another topic was our heart and ways to care for ourselves to promote healthy habits. Most importantly, our friends learned about kindness and love. In Chapel, they discussed God’s love for us and how we share that with others. We love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

GUMP is currently accepting applications for a limited number of openings for the 25/26 school year. We have enjoyed meeting new families during school tours and look forward to seeing some of them join us at GUMP in August 2025. If you know someone interested in learning more about our amazing preschool, please have them call the preschool at 901-753-3109 to set up a preschool tour.

Discovery Weekend 2025

February 21-23

We had a wonderful time at Discovery this past February! This long-held GUMC Youth tradition has been a treasured part of our calendar. Both the middle schoolers and high schoolers look forward to it every year! In the weeks leading up to this event, the high schoolers of our youth group plan the whole weekend for the middle schoolers from environment to discussion group questions they even plan the promotion and put on skits as entertainment! In addition, this year we had six high school seniors give talks for the rest of the youth group and they did a fantastic job!

YOUR CHURCH TRUSTEES at work...

Trustees are off to a busy and exciting 2025!

The Board of Trustees is blessed to have three new members this year Patty Harriman, Jennifer Predmore, and Adam Underwood. Together, with the returning board members, Melissa Bongiolatti, Ron Gaddy, and Josh Gwatney, we all are looking forward to a great 2025.

In February, the new driveway connection from the south OLEC parking lot to St. George’s entrance road was completed, which provides access to the traffic light at the intersection of West St. and Germantown Rd. (See photos below.)

Other projects for 2025 include:

• Glass wall reinforcement in the narthex to begin in March.

• Energy Management System (EMS) design in progress to update/replace the GUMC campus exterior and parking lot lights.

• McVay Gardens project to begin work this Spring.

The Board of Trustees values the input of all church members as it pertains to our property. The Trustees are responsible for our church property, so please be sure to contact myself or Anne Bush before starting any project, in order to provide needed approval and support. Thank you in advance.

Membership

Anne and Joe Mahoney

Germantown UMC welcomed Anne and Joe Mahoney into membership on Sunday, March 2, at our Prism worship service. Anne joined by transfer of her membership from Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, and Joe joined by transfer of his membership from St. Joseph Parish, Columbia, SC.

When asked what about GUMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied: "We were overjoyed to find a faith community that truly lives and breathes the message of Jesus – radical love and forgiveness. The warm and welcoming nature of the congregation really drew us in. When we missed a couple of weeks, people said things like ‘we missed you’ and ‘we’re glad you are back.’ Being noticed as part of a large group felt like a hug from God.”

Peter Simons

Germantown UMC welcomed Peter Simons into membership on Sunday, March 2, at our Prism worship service. Peter joined by transfer of his membership from First Baptist Church, Owasso, Oklahoma. Peter is our Prism Director of Music.

When asked what about GUMC made him want to become a part of our church community, he replied: "The warmth of the people and the amazing ministries of this church.”
