What a year! One of triumph, growth, and change. I’m so proud of the amazing work we’ve all done over this past year, and I know that, with your help, we’ll successfully serve even more students and make an even greater impact on our communities.

So, what’s next? I get excited when we plan the future for Germanna. How will we continue to offer next-level and affordable educational opportunities based on our students’ and communities’ needs? How will we continue to be the best decision towards a successful future for anyone at any level? And how will we better provide an inclusive, diverse, and safe space for our next generation of learners?

Germanna continues to be recognized as a top college in Virginia and across the country. Again, we have been recognized as a Military Friendly School, reflecting our great pride in serving and caring for our military-affiliated students and families. And, unlike national and state trends, Germanna’s enrollment continues to rise. What’s the key to our growth? Dedication and service, an endless love for our students, and our outstanding faculty. They are the ones who encourage, support, and teach our students. They are the ones who breathe life into learning.

And we’re also growing in Stafford. I’m thrilled to share that we are expanding in Stafford County in a big way through the purchase of a new 74,000 square foot location on Route 610. These two buildings, named the Kevin L. Dillard Health Sciences Building and the Barbara J. Fried Center, will greatly increase our ability to train the next generation of nurses and expand our offerings in the high-demand cybersecurity career field. This is game-changing. My sincere thanks to our incredible supporters Rhonda and Adam Fried, Kevin Dillard, and Mary Jane Pitts O’Neill, who is creating a second Robert C. O’Neill Wellness Clinic in Stafford, for their transformational gifts to aid in this expansion. You made this possible. Thank you. As you know, our students wear many hats while pursuing their education dreams at Germanna. And, for college to work, it must fit their already busy lives. That’s why we continue to innovate. Over the past year, we’ve announced outstanding partnerships with the University of Mary Washington, the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland, George Mason University, and Old Dominion University. These

new partnerships offer fast-tracked online degrees through the College Everywhere program, which provides students with the opportunity to complete a two-year degree in just one year—completely online. Our new part-time, evening, and weekend nursing program accelerates the degree and licensure process for busy adults, many already working in the field. Programs like these provide our learners with the flexibility they need to balance their hectic schedules and their education. No matter where students are headed in life, Germanna is the next step that’s going to get them there.

One of my favorite things about Germanna is its diversity. ALL are welcome here, and I take great pride in that. We’ve recently witnessed significant growth in our African American and Hispanic student populations, which confirms that the goals set in our Truth and Reconciliation Strategic Plan are being met. I’m also excited to continue offering our free, virtual Germanna Community Conversations speaker series, where local and national experts enlighten our communities on timely topics and discuss important issues facing the country and our communities right here. What I love about these dynamic sessions is that they provide discourse on a wide array of topics and feature experts with varying perspectives. At Germanna, we foster an environment rich and diverse in thought. The next generation is bright, and we want them to recognize Germanna as the right place for them and their diverse experiences, cultures, attitudes, and beliefs.

As I look forward to our next academic year, I know Germanna is headed in a bold, strategic direction. I am incredibly grateful for the undying commitment and support that you have shown, and I hope that you’ll join us as we continue to positively impact the lives of individual students, families, local businesses, and our greater communities. What’s next for Germanna? The sky is the limit… with a little help from our friends.

With love and respect,

2

SUCCESS

Germanna’s constant growth in times where local and national enrollment is low makes it elite among institutions.

EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH

Under Dr. Gullickson’s leadership, the College has made incredible progress in its enrollment over the past four years. Since 2018, there has been a 16% growth in enrollment. This year alone, we saw over 10,000 students enroll in Germanna classes. We’ve also seen a 19% increase in non-credit enrollment since last year, with nearly 3,000 students enrolling in non-credit courses.

REACHING MORE

Germanna’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is reflected in recent trends for the College’s student of color population. Since 2018, African American student enrollment has grown by 25%, and Hispanic student enrollment increased by 10%. These numbers reflect Germanna’s dedication to upholding the Truth and Reconciliation Strategic Plan, established in 2020 to better serve and attract students of color.

LOCUST GROVE EXPANSION

The Dr. Frank and Nancy Turnage Health Sciences Building is part of an effort to designate Locust Grove as the primary nursing and health campus for the College. It will contain the Robert C. O’Neill Clinic, named after the late husband of former Germanna Educational Foundation board member Mary Jane Pitts O’Neill. O’Neill gifted Germanna $1.5 million to help establish the medical campus in Locust Grove and support the expansion in Stafford.

STAFFORD EXPANSION

Germanna is expanding its healthcare programs to Stafford

County thanks to generous contributions from Kevin Dillard, Mary Jane Pitts O’Neill, and Rhonda and Adam Fried. Dillard, President and CEO of LifeCare Medical Transports and a graduate of Germanna, contributed $1 million to the College’s Stafford expansion. O’Neill donated $500,000 towards the expansion, helping fulfill the College’s goal of doubling its nursing capacity. Adam Fried, CEO of Atlantic Builders, and his wife Rhonda donated $1 million to support the Stafford center.

LEARNING

NEW PATHWAYS FOR NURSES

Congratulations to Dr. April Morgan, who recently assumed the role as Associate Dean of the Nursing program. We are thrilled for her to successfully lead the nursing program and continue to positively impact the Germanna community. Germanna launched its new part-time, evening, and weekend nursing program in the summer of 2022, which fast-tracks earning an associate degree in applied science and gaining licensure as a registered nurse in just two years.

CYBERSECURITY

Vernon Green Jr., cybersecurity instructor and president of local business GCubed Enterprises, Inc., brings I.T. and business expertise to the classroom with his extensive background in cybersecurity and business management. Green’s successful business provides I.T. and cybersecurity services for businesses and organizations. Germanna’s new partnership with GCubed serves as a combination of higher education and on-thejob training for students. The result? A better prepared workforce.

We continue to educate our communities and foster an exceptional learning environment in the classroom for our students.

STUDENTS

GERMANNA CARES

Our Germanna Cares program keeps students on the path to self-sufficiency by supporting their critical needs, including food and hygiene, transportation, emergency and safety needs, and technology and books.

Sierra Pierce, recent Germanna graduate, said that she wouldn’t have been able to finish her degree if it weren’t for the emergency aid that Germanna Cares provided when the pandemic left her jobless.

This year, Germanna Cares successfully supported over 400 students and families.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Germanna Educational Foundation is steadfast in providing our students scholarship opportunities to lighten the financial burden of college. This year, over $150,000 in local endowed and non-endowed scholarships was awarded to more than 200 students. Reid Furner-Moore, a recent Germanna College Everywhere graduate and current VCU student, was awarded funding to aid in her College Everywhere program completion.

Your support keeps our students on a path to success and allows us to continue fulfilling our mission of providing quality educational opportunities.

PARTNERS

COLLEGE EVERYWHERE

We continue to innovate by offering new, fast-tracked partnerships with four-year universities. Through the College Everywhere program, students can complete an online, two-year transferable degree in just one year. This year, we partnered with the University of Mary Washington to offer an online path to completing a bachelor’s degree in business in just 2.5 years.

TRAINING SKILLED EMPLOYEES

Germanna partners with agencies like the Virginia Department of Transportation to offer apprenticeships and programs, producing skilled and trained employees that fill high-value local jobs. These programs, like asphalt technology and highway maintenance, give learners the required on-the-job training and hands-on experience they need to succeed in the critical infrastructure industry.

We pride ourselves on our innovative partnerships with K-12 schools, four-year institutions, and local businesses that benefit our students and support our local communities.

COMMUNITY

ACT OF FAITH

To spark the conversation on how to better serve our community, we invited local faith leaders to attend Faith + Community. The event, held on October 21, 2021, gave us the opportunity to build stronger relationships and start an open dialogue about working closely together to support our communities. Dr. Gullickson cohosted the event with Bishop Michael Jackson Sr. of the Emmanuel Christian Center.

THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS

Germanna met with local business leaders to identify new partnerships with area businesses and hear their feedback and recommendations on how to better prepare our students for the workforce. The Business Leaders event, held on April 12, 2022, was a great way for Germanna to strengthen our partnerships with area businesses while benefiting from the thoughtful discussion and expertise of local leaders.

Germanna collaborated with local faith-based leaders and area businesses to forge greater partnerships throughout our communities. Angie Lewis, Reverend of Angie Lewis Ministries, Inc. UPLIFTING

Our Smart Start summer program provided students with additional learning and onboarding support to prepare them for success at Germanna.

EARLY STARTERS

Germanna counselors and career advisors worked closely with local school divisions to assist over 230 high school juniors and seniors in creating a plan for degree completion. The plan included a combination of advanced level high school coursework and inschool and independent dual enrollment with Germanna. This kickstart program accelerated their progress and allowed them to save money while developing a plan to reach their goals.

OVERCOMING BARRIERS

Equity Advancement and Accessibility Resources staff supported first-generation students and students with barriers by providing classes, laptop computers, and dynamic classroom and extracurricular experiences over the summer term. Over 50 students participated in this funfilled enrichment program, which provided a high level of support, solid introduction to all things Germanna, and a strong foundation for future success at the College.

GIVING

Our events this year were an astounding success. Because of you, the College raised nearly $2.5 million to support our students.

HONORING OUR HEROES

To honor our local healthcare heroes and educate the next generation of healthcare professionals, we held the Germanna Heroes Gala. The gala, held virtually on April 30, 2022, raised $1.7 million toward our goal of doubling our nursing capacity and filling a critical community need with thanks to generous contributions from Kevin L. Dillard, Mary Jane Pitts O’Neill, and Rhonda and Adam Fried.

GREAT GIVING EVENTS

Two of Germanna’s giving events, Give Day and the annual golf tournament, were a success. Germanna’s second annual Give Day, held on October 5, 2021, raised $400,000 to support our Early College, Germanna Guarantee, and Germanna Cares programs. Our annual golf tournament, held on May 16, 2022, was also a hit, bringing in $30,000 to support our students.

PRESIDENT AND CEO, LIFECARE MEDICAL TRANSPORTS

After working in medical services for years, Dillard noticed a need for quality medical transport. He and his business partner Dan Wildman set out to fill this void in the market, and in 1994, founded LifeCare Medical Transports. Since its founding, LifeCare Medical Transports has grown to become one of Virginia’s largest and most respected medical transportation providers. Today, the company serves more than 70,000 patients each year, providing services to hospitals and medical facilities throughout the state. Dillard is now the CEO of the Stafford County-based company.

“I deeply care for Fredericksburg and its surrounding communities, and when I saw the nursing shortage facing the region, I knew that I had to take action.”

At 16, Kevin Dillard realized that he was destined for a career in the emergency medical service industry. With a passion for helping others, he began his journey as a junior member of the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad. Dillard graduated from Germanna Community College and went on to pursue his master’s degree in business administration from Averett College. With a passion in EMS, he began his lifelong dedication to the medical services. Not only has he been a trailblazer in the Fredericksburg community for over three decades, he has continuously contributed to and supported Germanna.

Dillard contributed $1 million towards Germanna’s nursing and allied health technologies expansion to help meet the College’s goal of doubling its nursing capacity. One of the new health sciences facilities will be named in his honor to recognize his incredible community work and contribution to the college.

A Germanna alum, Kevin Dillard continues to make Germanna proud.

SPOTLIGHT

properties, but as her business began to take off, she started acquiring commercial properties. In 2019, she left her two other jobs to pursue her business full-time.

For five years, Cleaning for College, LLC, has been delivering janitorial services to the greater Fredericksburg area. And though the business was already successful in providing a high-quality cleaning service to Fredericksburg, especially in the height of the pandemic, Harris had a bigger vision for her business.

“Pennies pulled together can make a difference. I truly believe that every little bit helps.”

What started as an idea to generate extra income to put her son through college turned into a successful business giving back to the community.

Countess Harris, a Fredericksburg-area resident for over 20 years, found herself at a crossroads when her son expressed interest in attending college well into his senior year of high school. With such short notice, she needed a way to gather the funds necessary for tuition costs—and she needed it fast. In 2017, Harris started a cleaning business to earn extra income outside of her two other jobs. She started by cleaning residential

“The end goal was always to establish our own scholarship,” she said. And in May of 2022, Harris achieved her goal. She gifted the Germanna Educational Foundation $16,000 to establish the Cleaning for College, LLC, Educational Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is to be awarded to financially disadvantaged students who have overcome adversity and have the drive and determination to succeed in college.

“The fact that we were able to establish the scholarship at Germanna within a year of setting the goal is something that I’m proud of,” said Harris. A full circle moment for both her and her son, Harris is thrilled that she was not only able to successfully fund her son’s education, but that she can now help do the same for other area students. The first recipient of this scholarship was awarded this fall.

IMPACT

On behalf of the Germanna Educational Foundation board, thank you for your continued generous support and dedication to our community and its future leaders. Germanna graduates stay in the region and your investment in the College and our students is a testament to your belief in our community’s future. In addition to the opportunities afforded through grants and scholarships, there are numerous programs that are available to help students and families in need because of your unwavering commitment.

With your support, Germanna will continue to play an integral role in helping shape our community’s future and the opportunities that come with it. The foundation of our future success rests on our shoulders, and we thank each and every one of you for your current and future support. Thank you for being a part of Germanna’s family and a special thank you to all Germanna’s amazing faculty and staff for being teachers and mentors to those who need it most.

~ Todd Gillingham, President, Germanna Educational Foundation Board

After serving on the Germanna Educational Foundation board for many years and now as the President of the Germanna Real Estate Foundation, I have witnessed first-hand the great opportunities Germanna has provided to our students.

Thanks to the key role that the Real Estate Foundation has played, I am happy that Germanna is embarking on the most impactful expansion in our college history. The Real Estate Foundation purchased two buildings in North Stafford County which will be known as the Kevin L. Dillard Health Sciences Building and the Barbara J. Fried Center. Community partners, such as Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, the Stafford Hospital Foundation, the Stafford Economic Development Authority, Stafford County, and our generous donors, are making this dream come true for Germanna students.

~ Jack Rowley, President, Germanna Real Estate Foundation Board

22

On behalf of the Germanna Educational Foundation, I want to thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our future citizens and leaders. The Foundation is incredibly fortunate to be in such a generous community that believes in its students and wants them to succeed.

I am excited about Germanna’s next expansion, as two new buildings will be introduced in North Stafford County, owned by the Foundation, for use by the College. Totaling 74,000 square feet, the buildings will have two primary and a few other ancillary purposes.

With the vast nursing shortage facing the region, one building will be dedicated to Germanna’s Nursing and Allied Health Science programs, helping the College double its number of graduates. This is truly an incredible opportunity for the College to positively impact

our communities. The building will be known as the Kevin L. Dillard Health Sciences Building, honoring his commitment to healthcare in our community and to the mission of Germanna. It will also house one of two Robert C. O’Neill Wellness Clinics for community residents to use, thanks to a gift from Mary Jane Pitts O’Neill honoring her husband.

The second building, the Barbara J. Fried Center, will be primarily dedicated to a major Germanna expansion of its Cybersecurity and I.T. program. This new location of the Fried Center is optimal with its proximity to Quantico, the FBI Academy, and government contractors needing interns, apprentices, and a robust workforce. These opportunities are possible through the generosity of Rhonda and Adam Fried, longtime supporters of Germanna, and honors Adam’s trailblazing mother.

Thanks to Kevin and Mary Jane, as well as Teri McNally with The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, for contributing to this venture and making this expansion possible. Additional thanks go to the Stafford Economic Development Authority for years of financial help in bringing a huge Germanna presence to Stafford County and to Mary Washington Healthcare for their enormous support.

Last, I want to thank you. With your support, Germanna can continue its extraordinary growth. Thank you for being a part of the Germanna family. I look forward to seeing where Germanna is headed next on our community journey and know that you do as well.

~ Bruce L. Davis, Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Advancement
