Microwave Benefits

Our fast-paced lives couldn’t exist without our microwave ovens, especially in small kitchens, but so many people see these little powerhouses only for reheating left-overs. However, cooking food in the microwave is actually one of the fastest, healthiest and most energyefficient ways to cook! And this means more than just getting dinner on the table quickly; the less time you cook food, the more you retain the flavour and nutrients. Plus, with microwave cooking, there is no need to add extra oils.

4 Microwave Benefits

Save money: A microwave uses up to 75% less energy than your conventional stove or oven. What’s more, they do not generate excess heat like conventional ovens do, meaning that they will not adversely affect your home’s heating/cooling costs. Defrosting in the microwave oven is the best way to preserve the quality of the food and it’s also the safest from a microbiological point of view. Choice: spend more time with family and loved ones enjoying a convenient, healthy meal rather than spending all your time in the kitchen by the stove.

1

Save Energy

Cooking times are short. (Nearly half the time as opposed to conventional stove top cooking.)

2

Save money

Less waste, everything can be reheated.

3

Reduce or eliminate fat And realise healthy and light cuisine

4

Respect the flavor of food And keep the nutrients and vitamins

5

Keep your kitchen clean

Most foods cook covered, no splash, no oven to clean

1

Magnetron

The heart of the microwave is the magnetron. It generates very short waves, called microwaves. Microwaves are high frequency, short length electromagnetic waves, similar to radio waves, that travel in a straight line at the speed of light. This form of power creates a rise in temperature.

2

Stirrer fan

The microwaves created by the magnetron are then distributed throughout the cavity by the stirrer fan. The microwaves will then induce vibration of the sugar, fat and water molecules that are in the food at 2.5 million times per second. Those vibrations are creating friction, leading to a rise in temperature which will either cook or reheat your food. As an example, when you rub your hands, you cause friction which in turns heats your hands. The microwave oven has a similar concept, except that friction is sugar, fat and water. As a consequence, the more fat and sugar in your recipe and less food or moisture in your container, the greater your risk of burning your food and damaging your container. Every microwave has its own cooking pattern and some may have hot spots, meaning that some areas heat faster than others.

3

Noise

The noise that many microwave ovens make after the door is open is usually the fan. Don’t be alarmed! The noise does not mean that microwaves are being produced.

4

Energizer

The energizer is the location where the microwaves enter the oven. It can be located on top or on the side and you can have 2 energizers at the same time.

Owner’s manual Read the manual of your microwave oven to understand its limitations and to locate your energizer.

Best Practices

10 Best Practices

Safety Read your microwave manual to understand its limitations. Always refer to your product’s instruction booklet to learn how to correctly use the product.

The maximum amount of time for continuously microwaving your Tupperware containers is 30 minutes. Let the product cool before re-using.

Always place your microwaveable product at least 5cm away from the top and sides of the microwave walls (including the door) to avoid blocking the magnetron.

Only use products with microwave safe pictograms which are intended for microwave use.

Be sure to follow your min and max fill lines if they are on your specific microwaveable product. When using a Tupperware microwaveable products, make sure to activate only the microwave function. A few of our microwave products, such as the MicroGourmet, contain metal. These products are designed for safe microwave use as long as the usage directions are followed. Never use metal products that were not designed for microwave use.

Although the microwave remains relatively cool during the cooking process, the food becomes hot; therefore, it is recommended to check the handling temperature of containers before removing. Use oven gloves if necessary. Always respect standing time. The standing time is important for even heat distribution inside the food. When removing the cover, open the product with the seal directing steam away from you.

Power and wattage All of our recipes have been tested and developed using 300 to 900 watt microwaves. Here's a great tip to determining your microwave's wattage: Heat 1 cup (250 ml) of room temperature water in a CrystalWave Soup Mug at 100% power.

If it takes longer than 3 minutes for the water to boil, your microwave has less than 600 watts of power and you should expect to cook everything longer than the recipes in our guides. Cooking times may vary depending on the wattage of your microwave.

How to Clean: Tips & Tricks Splatters and food residue from microwaving are not hygienic and decrease the efficiency of your microwave. Fortunately, microwaves are easy to clean if you know how!

Lemon or For daily cleaning, use a damp sponge Water or Tupperware Microfiber to wipe the inside of your microwave. Some ovens are equipped with a steam generating system which is helpful for cleaning. To freshen any odors, mix baking soda or lemon juice with water to dampen your sponge or Microfiber Towel before cleaning.

Staining

Vinegar can also be helpful when removing residue. Fill a CrystalWave Soup Mug with 250 ml of water and 2 tbsp of white vinegar. Microwave uncovered for 3 minutes at 800 watts. This will steam the walls of the microwave and loosen any dried-on residue. Remove and wash the turntable plate. Wipe the inside of the microwave with your Microfiber Towel.

Staining happens with refrigerator or freezer containers caused by foods which can stain (carrots, tomatoes, eggs, spinach), when increased by heat. It is not a material or manufacturing defect. Doesn’t limit functional capacity. No Warranty exchange.

Recipe Tips

Liquid proportions All Tupperware recipes were developed using Tupperware products and, therefore, all proportions are refer to use in those products. For non-Tupperware recipes, use less liquid than instructed in your recipe since Tupperware microwave containers retain moisture when sealed. Start with 2/3 of the water given in the recipe, and then add more as needed.

Spices Excess moisture can increase the infusion of spices while cooking. Therefore, you may want to reduce the amount of spices.

Seasoning vegetables Season vegetables with salt after cooking in the microwave. Salting beforehand could leave brown spots and dry the food.

Coloring Paprika and breadcrumbs add color to lighter foods such as poultry and potatoes. Spice mixes are good for dusting over baked custards, fruit mixes and cakes to enhance appearance. Soy or teriyaki sauce offer an Asian flavor and coating for meats, fish and poutry. Barbecue and tomato sauce can be used to glaze poultry and meats before and during cooking for flavor and color.

Soups When cooking soups, start with raw vegetables and about 150ml or 2/3 cup of water. Add boiling water after the vegetables have cooked to save time and energy.

Cooking time Larger quantities of food require a longer cooking time. An easy timing guide is to multiply the original cooking time by the increased amount of food, and then slightly subtract time to avoid overcooking. For example: 1 medium sized potato = 4 min, 2 medium sized potatoes = 4x2 = 8 min, Subtract 2 minutes = 6 minutes

Herbed mustard and soy glazes are excellent for meats or poultry.

Desserts – Cake

Jam, jellies or marmalade can be lightly brushed on ham, turkey, or duck for flavor and color (preferably halfway through cooking time).

When baking a cake in the microwave, add an extra 2 tbsp. of milk and reduce the amount of baking powder so the cake does not rise too high. Let the cake batter stand 5 minutes to allow the leavening agents of the baking powder to process. Do not over beat the cake mix as this will cause the cake to collapse in the microwave. Do not cover the container while baking. The cover can be used afterward during the standing time to allow the steam to release the cake from the container.

Milk or egg based foods Milk or egg based foods tend to boil over.

Egg mixtures Never microwave a whole egg with shell as it will explode due to built up pressure. Always use a low power for cooking eggs (without shells). Avoid reheating previously fried eggs in the microwave oven as the yolk could burst.

To add a nice finishing touch to your baked items, sprinkle on toasted coconut. You can also add toasted, finely-chopped nuts before cooking or at the end of the standing time.

Blanch almonds Place 125 g raw almonds and 250 ml of water in a CrystalWave bowl. Microwave at 650 watts for 3 minutes or until water begins to boil. Peel almonds after water cools.

Extract more juice from citrus Microwave a citrus fruit for 20 seconds at 800 watts before squeezing. This will soften the cellular walls of the fruit allowing you to extract maximum amount of juice from your citrus.

Ripen avocado Score the exterior skin of an avocado with a fork. Make sure to break through the tough skin so that microwaves can reach the fruit. Heat for 30 seconds at 360 watts. Gently squeeze and if the avocado is still hard, microwave for an additional 30 seconds.

Soften brown sugar Place brown sugar in an Ultra Pro container, cover, and microwave at 800 watts for 15-second intervals until the sugar softens.

Soften butter To soften butter, set medium sized pieces of butter in an uncovered MicroCook container. Microwave at 360 watts for 10 seconds. Check the butter at 10-second intervals.

Recipe Tips 21

Cooking Factor Tips

Food size Microwaves generated in the microwave oven will directly penetrate the food up to a depth of approximately 2–3cm. This depends a lot on the type of food and the size of the food. For example, a sliced carrot cooks in less time than a whole carrot. Cutting your vegetables into equal sizes will give you the best results.

Food density Low density foods cook faster than denser foods. For example, a cake cooks faster than potatoes.

Food placement Spread food evenly in the container before reheating or cooking. If you are cooking an assortment of vegetables, arrange larger sizes and denser foods toward the outside of the container and smaller, less dense foods in the center.

22 Cooking Factor Tips

Types of food

Temperature

Not all foods cook the same in the microwave: water, fat, and sugar molecules are more efficiently heated than other type of molecules when cooking food, always add a minimum quantity of water to get an even result. Fat and sugar, However, due to their higher boiling points, can reach temperatures as high as 150°C in case of prolonged exposure, This means you cannot fry, make caramel, bacon or pop corn in Tupperware microwave containers.

The colder the food is, the longer it will take to cook. For example, frozen foods will take longer to cook than chilled foods.

Product size Always use the recommended product size/dimension to ensure even cooking results.

Seal Always cover the product before microwaving to retain moisture and ensure even cooking results.

Fruits and vegetables It is ideal to cook fruits and vegetables in the microwave due to their fast cooking time.

Bones Avoid contact of bones with the sides of the Tupperware container while cooking as this could damage the product.

Piercing food Pierce or prick food skins on apples, tomatoes, squash and jacket potatoes and score whole fish or chicken breast to allow excess steam to escape.

Stirring Stir food or rotate the dish to ensure even cooking.

Standing time Food continues to cook when removed from the microwave. This process is known as carry-over cooking. During this time, heat moves from the edges of the food to the center, continuing to cook the food evenly.

Materials Microwaves are reflected by metal and aluminum. They pass through plastic, glass, ceramic, and paper, but not in the same proportion. Tupperware products suitable for the microwave absorbs only 3% of the waves compared to 30% absorbed by glass containers and 20% by ceramic! This means our Tupperware microwave products are much more efficient to cook, reheat or defrost, than any other type of material.
