It is clear the success of the Rancho Cucamonga Mill is due to our team’s commitment, resilience and persistence. We are also thankful to have earned overwhelming support from the local community. This support helped reshape the mill so it meets the highest environmental standards. Since rolling our first billet in 1957, the Rancho Cucamonga Mill has made several notable achievements. We were among the first domestic steel operations to invest in an electric arc furnace and continuous casting machines.

Today we serve as environmental stewards through facility upgrades aimed at reducing our impact. I am proud to celebrate with the Rancho team, community leaders and lawmakers as we further our commitment to making the cleanest and greenest steel in the nation, if not the world.

From the beginning 1956 Etiwanda Steel Producers, Inc. established after American Pipe and Construction had a shortage of steel bar for its products.

Installed one of the first continuous casting machines in the U.S.

1968 1970

Etiwanda Steel becomes Ameron Steel after American Pipe and Construction changes name to Ameron. The wire mill is built.

Ameron, Tokyo Steel, and Mitsui Trading Company join to build melt shop, creating TAMCO.

1957 The first 10-ton EAF installed.

Early 60s Installed a cooling bed and second EAF. Both EAFs were upgraded to 15 tons.

1974

1980s

All mills in southern California close except Rancho Cucamonga.

2010 Gerdau buys the mill from TAMCO and begins to invest millions of dollars on environmental improvements.

2017

Gerdau begins installation on the new environmental control system, known as a baghouse.

Impacting lives in California

Our employees and their safety are the cornerstone of what we do.

There are over 250 employees at the Gerdau Rancho Cucamonga Mill working to make rebar for construction projects in or near California. Gerdau purchased the Rancho Cucamonga Mill in 2010.

Since then, Gerdau has invested $40 million in environmental improvements at the mill and in our other California facilities.

Take a look at what We've helped build From stadiums to LA skyscrapers, Gerdau has been a big part of building the future.

The Wilshire Grand uses Gerdau Grade 80 rebar in its foundation. The Devore Interchange will move goods and people easier thanks, in part, to Gerdau steel. And Gerdau assisted in placing 15,000 tons of steel in six weeks in the Apple 2 Campus' circular foundation.

Beyond Work

Our dedication isn't only to our customers – it's to our community.

Part of our commitment to quality is to improve the lives of our neighbors through our social responsibility initiatives.

At Rancho Cucamonga Mill, we have donated time and treasures to local schools and nonprofits, including United Way, American Heart Association and Adopt-A-Highway Program. The mill has also worked with law enforcement agencies to melt about 182,000 guns every year. By melting the guns, the metal can be used in building projects, such as bridges and buildings, and the guns are off the street.

now that's Dedication Finding someone who has stuck to one job for 10 years can be hard – but this year, six Rancho Cucamonga Mill employees can say they have been here for 40 years or more. Those employees include: Jesus Vasquez, 50 years; Dale Denninger, 44 years; Van Johannsen, 41 years; Richard Chilibolost, 41 years; John Roher, 40 years in October; and Robert Swager, 40 years in September.

DALE DENNINGER Dale has been at the mill for 44 years. His father worked as a security guard at the mill. Dale quit college to surf in Hawaii. When he returned to California, he got a job at the mill in 1972.

Family Man

Jesus Vasquez has been at Rancho Cucamonga Mill for almost as long as it has been in operation.

There’s a good chance you may see Jesus Vasquez munching on a burrito, one of his favorite foods, during his lunch break at Gerdau’s Rancho Cucamonga steel mill. No one has worked at the Rancho Cucamonga Mill longer than Jesus Vasquez. The 73-year-old has been an employee for 50 years.

Vasquez’s work anniversary was October 20, 1966, and in October 2016, the mill threw a celebration for him.

Advice from Jesus: "Do your job and always try to learn as much as possible."

Vasquez has a big family: three sons, two daughters, 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He said his family is the reason why he’s stayed at Rancho Cucamonga Mill for 50 years.

For one, he is now a guide builder in the roll shop – but he didn’t start there.

Until 14 years ago, Vasquez was in the melt shop. He has also held the position of assistant roller, among others. Some other changes he’s seen: “The process

WHEN HE'S NOT WORKING Jesus Vasquez likes to watch television.

His favorite shows are NCIS or anything to do with cowboys. He also likes to spend time with his family.

Van Johannsen has worked his way up from an apprentice to 'A' mechanic in the 41 years he's been at the mill.

Advice from Van: "You've got to be patient.

You can't start at the top.

Do your job the best you can, and you'll get there."

It’s been a while since mechanic Van Johannsen has made a walking stick from a eucalyptus tree growing in his old camping spot. But at one point, it was rare for a Rancho Cucamonga Mill employee to not have one of Johannsen’s handcrafted pieces.

for at least 20 years – about half the time he’s been at the mill. He celebrated his 41st work anniversary this month.

"I like the people," Johannsen said. "I work on spindles. I like that I can concentrate on one thing."

When Johannsen started at the mill June 15, 1976, he was in the apprentice program. His work in the United States Navy – where he went to shipfitter school and learned skills such as welding and pipefitting – prepared him for the jobs he would fill at the mill.

He was in the Navy for almost four years, starting in 1972.

At the mill, Johannsen worked his way up from oiler to ‘A’ mechanic. He’s known for his work ethic and, of course, his woodwork. The walking sticks, for one, but Johannsen was also recently asked to make an exhibit to show how a billet is taken through a mill stand.

“Seemed like I made one for everyone at work,” Johannsen said.

He would sand the wood down then put a name on it with a dremel tool. A final coat of polyurethane would polish the stick.

“I found a home. The people who’ve worked here have been really good people,” Johannsen said.

IN THE NAVY Van Johannsen maintenanced destroyers: warships that escort and defend larger vessels in a fleet from torpedo boats.

He's been to Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan.

WHAT's NEXT Gerdau's new baghouse will keep California's air clean.

Gerdau has invested $23 million to upgrade it's environmental control system, or baghouse. This will make the mill the cleanest in the nation.

Construction will begin summer 2017.

The baghouse will be operational February 2018.

is a device that removes dust particles from the air.

The dust is created from the steelmaking process. After being captured in fabric tubes, or bags, the dust can be recycled.

The mill is under jurisdiction of the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

SCAQMD is one of the most progressive regulators in the country.
