Suikerbakker Complex

This phase of the project includes the design of a building with 13 apartments, as part of a two-building complex totaling 29 units. For the first time, BIM was used from the definitive design stage through to construction. The model allowed us to verify compliance with regulations and technical feasibility, ensuring the design could be built efficiently and accurately. This approach streamlined the process, addressing both design and construction challenges early on.

A garden is transformed into an open museum. Corten steel, steel beams and concrete tiles, combined together with the help of light and nature, serve as both an exhibition and a background. Custom made steel elements accompanied by prefabricated concrete components create different cozy areas, where residents can spend time during the day. Have a morning coffee by the entrance, a dinner with friends under the pergola, or maybe a drink on the south-east podium.

Metal Canopy | Product Design

2022 | Gouda B3D Architectuur

This unique steel canopy was designed for the open atrium of a hotel in Gouda. The need arose when resin began leaking from the tree, disturbing the guests. The goal was to design a canopy around the tree, without altering the atmosphere of the patio. The starting point for the design were the motifs of leaves and flowers, found throughout the lobby and atrium (from the wallpaper to the details of the tea spoon). By re-design them on a different scale, we created a steel bouquet, which hugs the tree and looks more like a work of art than just a canopy.

Façade

2021 | Gouda B3D Architectuur

A monumental building on the main square of Gouda needed a façade renovation for the ground floor store. From an anonymous window shop with a double door in the middle to a front façade that could emphasize the architecture of the building and fit the aesthetic parameters of historic buildings. That was the challenge during the license application. Using the original drawings as base, the result is an elegant front door on the left side and a big window on the right. The frames are realized with the traditional details of the Era of the building. Bottle green glazed bricks complete the design. The main color for the frames and the bricks is the Old Dutch Green, in homage to the traditional colors of the local architecture. photo

Romans in Alpen aan den Rijn

Museum | Concept Design

2021 | Alpen aan den Rijn

B3D Architectuur

The new building of the National Roman Museum in Alphen aan den Rijn is located next to the former town-hall. The building of the former town-hall serves as an entrance to the new museum with an ‘inner square’ that connects east and west. The new building is mainly placed below the ground, while parts of it pop out as ‘remnants’, that the visitors have to to discover. The game of exploration starts from the city, since concrete elements pop out of the ground, over the whole center. The purpose of these elements, which host the outdoor depot, is to direct the people to the museum. After entering in the museum, the visitors continue their discovery by walking in norrows corridors, until they arrive at the main exhibition hall. The large exhibition space is the only part of the museum that is clearly visible is from the outside. It is connected with the former town-hall via a corridor in the basement. At the same time, there is optical connection between the two buildings through the exhibition hall and the balcony of the former town-all.

This freestanding building in Alphen aan den Rijn was originally built in 1972 as a pharmacy with a laboratory on its premises. As years passed, the function of the lab was not needed anymore. As a result, part of the building had to be transformed into apartments. The surface of the attic was increased by adding four dormer windows, which repeat the rhythm of the existing openings on the floor below. At the same time the interior was redesigned and the existing exterior was freshen up. Additionally, bureaucratic issues such as parking spaces were arranged. Moreover this transformation required additional mailboxes and this was the reason for redesigning the existing ones and rebuilding the billboard with the names of the companies. Architecture is not just about developing projects for buildings, but also thinking about all the details around them.

When a function is not required any longer, the building can always be transformed into something else. This was the case of an ex-dental clinic in the suburbs of Alphen aan den Rijn. The empty shell was converted into three apartments for starters, split in two floors, with individual entrances on the ground floor. The former storage space in the attic was extended by adding a long dormer-window. The whole front façade was redesigned. New openings on the ground floor and three French balconies (one for each apartment) on the upper floor give a new look to this existing building.

Residential Complex | Concept Design

B3D Architectuur

The corner theme is a critical point in architecture. The starting point for this corner building design were the limitations setted by the location. An existing opening by the neighbours and the need for natural light, for both the existing and new building, created the need for a patio in the heart of the new building. An indor parking space for the new tenants is located under this patio, which is elevated on the first floor. The new volume, devided in two by the stairwell creates a residendial complex that opens to the outside and at the same time hosts a protected green heart inside. Architecture becomes a transition from public to private, from city to nature.

In the city of Gouda the need of a new façade emerged when a former garage space was converted into a private house. The architectural lines of the main building, which is located on its right, created the design of the façade. The rhythm of the existing brick exterior wall was followed in the new composition. The aim was not to imitate the authentic architecture, but to integrate the new structure into the existing situation by using new materials and techniques. photo

M.K. Private House

B3D Architectuur

This corner house in Woerden, originally built in 1968, was constructed in bricks with a dark pitched roof. The side walls are load bearing, while the façades were made by wooden frames. During the years, the requirements of its inhabitants for square meters increased. Consequently, an extension on the backyard and a dormer-window on the attic were required. The result is a harmonic synthesis where the existing building and the new constructions are blending into each other. Red cedar planks combined with zinc details and black aluminum frames create a link between the old building and is extension.

Gabion House

This vacation house for a couple is located in the rural area of Chania, facing the gulf of Souda. The house is placed between the olive trees, that already exist on the plot. An atrium with these olive trees seperates the living spaces from the bedroom, and the house takes its form, so that not a single tree is demolished. A thick wall constructed from gabion blocks, filled with local stone “embraces” the glass house, protecting it from the strong mediterranian sun. The north facade, facing the sea, is designed with floorto-ceiling windows, and the functions of the house are expanding to the open area.

Step in the Kitchen

The need of a staircase in the kitchen heading on a small attic, led to a design of a sigle furniture, which combines the two functions. Some of the steel steps, are extended and are used as counters, or shelves. The kitchen table is an extension of the counter and can be used also as an extra preparation space. Cabinets made of black plexyglass complete the design.

Comet Light

This ceiling light takes its dynamic shape from the comet and its tail. The light bulb stands for the comet itself, while the iron structure represents the tail. It is made of rebar, collectively known as reinforcing steel. It is suspended from the roof, with the use of two hollow section beams.

Patchwork House

Traditionally, the architecture in Netherlands consists, in its majority, of buildings constructed with bricks. Trying to honor that tradition, the regulations of the area of Entreegebied in Amsterdam Noord were enforcing the use of brick, as the only material of this corner townhouse as well. After an extended study on its technics, a really unique facade was formed, with a combination of different patterns and colours, making the house stand out from its surroundings.

Villa Plot 3

The former hockey field “Leonidas” at the Kralinger Esch Rotterdam now is a neighborhood of 46 detached houses. Each house has its own garden and it is seperated from the next one with a fence. We were tasked to design one of those houses, aiming to make it as autonomous and energy-wise as possible, and with the limitation of using only natural materials. The result was a two storey villa for a young couple, consisting of three volumes. Each volume is built with different materials and is serving a different fuction. Openings, such as windows and doors, are placed strategically on areas which would allow the maximum amount of light to flow through.

CPO Experiment

The future inhabitants of five row houses decided to build together, and formed the “CPO Experiment 2015”. The architects in cooperation with the future inhabitants proceeded to the design process. The needs and the personal taste of all of them led to a design of a unique single unit, consisting of five different, yet personilized houses. The result is a “mix & match” facade, where materials such as corten, limestone, thermowood and burned wood are combined on top of a wooden structure.

The Gate of Achaia

The “Agamemnon” airport in Araxos, mainly used for military purposes by the Greek Air Force since 1969, is located among the fields and greenhouses of the Peloponnese. This point, being particularly central, is ideal to accommodate an airport for the periphery of Western Greece. Close to a variety of surviving ancient greek monuments, such as Ancient Olympia, it is a place of special tourist interest. In addition, examining the existing infrastructure, it is clear that the runway and the taxiways are perfectly capable of accommodating the commercial aircrafts. So this proposal concetrates to the design of the new terminal and the landside.

Exploring the area and experiencing the Genius Loci, the visitors realize that all its elements, such as the sea, the surround-

three-dimensional view

ing settlements and the surviving monuments, are gradually appearing in front of him. This main feature of the area is used as the main design concept for the new terminal. Aiming to maintain the “Genius Loci of Surprise” for the passengers who arrive or depart from it, a patchwork of oxidised metal plates creates a tilted roof which covers the entire building. Thus, the pattern of the roof is in harmony with the fields, and the passengers realize the existence of the building when they are at its entrance. The same principal is used in the interior, where the passengers are invited to explore the space. The facade is a dual glass wall, with the bearing structure positioned between the two glasses. This creates a translucent filter between the interior and the exterior. The airport hotel, located next to the terminal is designed as a small settlement. A single roof covers this “settlement” so that it can stand next to the sizable terminal. Consequently, the terminal is not just a “machine”, which serves civil aviation, but it is transformed into a gateway for the area, in which it is located.

Enviromental Route

School of architecture | TUC

Awareness about the environment and climate change has led to the creation of research centers aimed at enhancing sustainable development in Europe. Additionally, an important factor in enhancing environmental consciousness is the involvement of citizens through exhibitions. The proposal is a submerged “route” with the labs and the exhibition areas attached on it. The aim of this decision is, on the one hand to protect the visitors from the winds and the sea. On the other hand to preserve the topography of the peninsula of Agioi Apostoloi, where the project is located, by not adding a megastructure. In addition the existing abandoned buildings are used as a scenery for the entrance of the institute. Materials such as wood and gabion boxes filled with local rocks harmonize the new building with its enviroment. The whole complex is used as a museum, because the visitor, except from the exhibits, can also watch the scientists working in their labs. The design and the location of each lab indicates its operation (eg: the lab for research of water resources is located next to the water). With the aim to shock the visitor for the consequences of the disinterest in the enviroment, a dramatic corridor is designed, which leads though the existing building to a “burned” forest.

Living on the Walls

This proposal has emerged after the analysis of the area of Chanioporta, in Heraklion. Its main characteristics are the wall of the old town and the particular relief caused by the existence of the rampart within the site. Other characteristics are the weak connection of the area of Chanioporta with the sea front and the antithesis between the fragmented space with small houses and narrow streets, and the neighboring structured environment. The starting point was to maintain the identity of the area. This was achieved by placing autonomous row houses. In order to create a filter between the small residencies and the external enviroment, a three-storey building was placed on the southwest. Aiming to include the remains of the rampart on the synthesis, an extra house typology was designed. On the west side, where there is a great altitude difference, because of the wall, stairs and bridges were placed to connect the two areas. Parallel platforms where designed amphitheatrically in relation with the wall. These platforms strengthen the connection of the area of Chanioporta with the sea front, while underneath them, they host sports facilities for the area. Finally, with the aim to maintain the spatial qualities of today’s situation, the direct relationship between the living and the outdoor spaces is preserved in all the types of houses.
