International Student Resource Center

When education transcends country borders, it opens peoples minds and enables them to go beyond making per-

sonal connections to solving problems that we all have in common. The international student resource center mission is to help students who are entering the U.S. to adapt faster to the new living environment and integrate into LA society. First, it provides short-term housing to help student minimise homesickness. The center arranges a local buddy program help the student with finding local resources and helps to bridge communication barrier. Then, the center offers counseling and tutor to guidance student with college education plan and help them with academic needs.

Also, by holding pop-up events at open and flexible spaces to enhance cultural exchange and social interaction. The center provides a sustainable safe place that is comfortable, social and educational where students can exchange ideas and get a greater understanding of different cultures and their people. The power of international education helps students to navigate and thrive in today’s interconnected world.

Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other form of communication can to the humanizing of international relations.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERNATIONAL EDuCATION The primary goals of international education are furthering knowledge and cultural capital, learning about places and cultures, and gaining intercultural skills in the process. We can think about the benefits of international education on several levels. One is international education and the benefit to the individual in pursuit of education, research, or teaching. Another way to think about it is through the nation states engaged in international education: how and why might a government decide to provide scholarships or other mechanisms encouraging citizens to acquire an education overseas? It may be trying to equip citizens with a level of education and knowledge so they can return and contribute to the economy or to in-demand fields in their country. International education may be a form of cultural diplomacy. Employers also have a stake in international education. Some employers incentivize their employees to go and acquire credentials elsewhere because, in this global economy, companies need a workforce with the capacity, skills, and talents to compete globally.

International Students’ Economic Impact on their Host Countries Studying abroad is becoming increasingly more popular with students all over the world and in every field of study. There are numerous benefits that a student can get from studying abroad including gaining knowledge of another culture, learning a new language, gain international job prospects, and meet new people.

However, international students also offer many benefits to the economies of the countries that host them.

The United States is the most popular destination for international students, followed by the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. At Australian colleges and universities, international students make up almost 20% of the student population. In 2017, over 685,000 international students went to study in Australia, which is a 15% increase from the number of international students in Australia in 2016. Also, during the 2016-2017 academic year, international students contributed $28 billion to the Australian economy. International students have had the same effect on many other countries. In France, international students contribute €4.65 billion to the economy every year. Along with the spending money from international students during their stay and their costs of tuition, the French economy gains €466.7 million per year from friends and family visiting the international students. In the United Kingdom, international students added £13.8 billion gross value to the United Kingdom GDP. On top of the costs of attending school abroad, international students also spend a considerable amount on items such as food and clothing while staying in their host country. In the United Kingdom, international students have spent £750 million in the transportation industry and £690 million in the retail industry.

In the United States, international students make up approximately 5% of the student population. International students have made considerable contributions to the United States economy; during the 2015-2016 academic year, international students spent $32.8 billion dollars in the United States and contributed to the labor market by holding over 400,000 jobs. The number of international students studying in the United States is increasing, with there being 85% more international students than there were ten years ago and 45 states reporting an increase in international students in 2016 compared to 2015. Texas even increased its international student population by 18%. International students also contribute to the United States economy because they are very valuable to the technology industry. Approximately 40% of international students earn degrees in STEM fields and can provide great insight and ideas to the technology industry, where half of the startup companies in America are started by immigrants.

10. Life Experience Why study abroad? For most students, this time may be the only opportunity they ever get to travel abroad for a long period of time. Eventually you will find a job and career, and the opportunity to study abroad may turn out to be a once in a life time opportunity. Take this opportunity to travel the world with no commitments but to study and learn about new cultures. Studying abroad is an experience unlike any other.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CHALLENGES

1. Feeling Homesick After the first flow of excitement, you may start feeling homesick. Although you’ll meet new people, they will seem cold and distant. Solution: Although Facebook Messenger and Skype can’t completely replace real interaction with the people back home, they will still make you feel connected to them. Try to open up to as many opportunities as possible. If someone invites you to a social event, show up! You don’t have to talk too much if you’re an introvert, but the least you could do is be part of different activities and make some friends.

2. Fitting In You’ll suddenly find yourself into a completely different culture. The people behave differently, the food is different, and you can’t get used to the way they socialize. Solution: Be yourself and allow your new friends to learn about your culture while sharing their viewpoints with you.

Club membership is a great way to fit in. Get informed about the available clubs in your university and join the ones that are closest to your interest. When you connect with like minded people, it will be easier for you to fit in.

3. The Language Barrier If you’re studying in a country where people speak a foreign language, you will have difficulties to express yourself. If you don’t speak the language well, you won’t have enough confidence to talk to people. Solution: Take language lessons. Don’t be shy to describe what you want to say if you don’t know the precise words. With time, you will be more confident to speak up; it just takes a lot of practice for you to get to that point.

4. Academic Writing Even native speakers find academic writing difficult. For foreigners, it’s almost impossible to write impeccable papers from the first attempt. Solution: You have to practice a lot. If you don’t know how to write a paper, see if your university offers specialized writing courses.

5. Roommates It’s not easy to live with people you just met.

They will have their own lifestyle that may collide with your habits. Solution: Allow your roommate to have personal space, but don’t allow them to make your life miserable. Try to be a good friend and do everything in your power to make that relation work. If it doesn’t, you’ll just have to live through the year and get new roommates for the next semester.

6. Finances You’ll want to see many new places and have drinks every night, but that won’t be possible. Solution: You’ll have to be a bit tight with your money.

Get second-hand books, cook your own meals whenever possible, find part-time job, and attend dorm parties instead of going out in clubs.

7. The Lectures Native students have the needed background to attend lectures like that, but you might not be prepared for it.Solution: If you don’t understand the presentations, ask some of your new friends to share their notes with you. Don’t worry too much about this; you’ll get used to the new methods with time.

case study 1 The Nakagin Capsule Tower

Architect Kisho Kurokawa was very innovative in his creation of the Nakagin Capsule Tower in 1972, which was the first capsule architecture design. The module was created with the intention of housing traveling businessmen that worked in central Tokyo during the week. It is a prototype for architecture of sustainability and recycleability, as each module can be plugged in to the central core and replaced or exchanged when necessary.

The Nakagin Tower, part of the so-called Metabolist Architecture spearheaded by Kisho Kurokawa, is perhaps the most famous building that sprang out of these social experiments.

It is a mixed-use residential and office tower.

A total of 140 capsules are stacked and rotated at varying angles around a central core, standing 14-stories high. The technology developed by Kurokawa allowed each unit to be installed to the concrete core with only 4 high-tension bolts, which keeps the units replaceable.

Each capsule measures 4 x 2.5 meters, permitting enough room for one person to live comfortably.

The interior space of each module can be manipulated by connecting the capsule to other capsules.

Hoisted by a crane, the capsules were inserted in the shipping containers by use of a crane, and then fastened to the concrete core shaft.

The indoor campus environment enhances the concept of creating a collective community and identity by centralizing all common services and conferencing within the “commons” or social heart of the building. Reclaimed timber bridges and stairs throughout the atrium connect people across the building, and are strategically located adjacent to informal seating and touchdown work surfaces to encourage communication and collaboration. The shared communal space has become an important connective tissue between departments that were previously dispersed in “silos”. dispersed in “silos”.

Every major aspect of the building is designed to create a high-performance interior environment that establishes a new modern and sustainable workplace standard.

The “oxbow” design creates an open, collaborative workplace environment for the USACE, emblematic of their mission of “Building Strong.” The building’s form—reflecting the natural oxbows in the adjacent Duwamish Waterway—provides measurable energy-performance benefits and is both functional and flexible to accommodate the USACE’s nearly constantly changing team-based work.

Case study 4 Oodi Helsinki Central Library

By reducing on-site storage and consulting library-users on how they access culture, the designers and librarians of Oodi have been able to introduce facilities including a café, restaurant, public balcony, movie theatre, audio-visual recording studios and a makerspace.

This is representative of broader experimentation within Finnish libraries to offer new services in addition to loaning books.

The siting of Oodi opposite the Eduskuntatalo was chosen to be symbolic of the relationship between the government and the populace, and act as a reminder of the Finnish Library Act’s mandate for libraries to promote lifelong learning, active citizenship, democracy and freedom of expression. It also places the new library in the heart of Helsinki’s cultural district, close to many of the capital’s great institutions. Oodi has a peaceful open-plan reading room on the upper floor that has been nicknamed “book heaven”, but books only fill one third of the space within the library.

Case Study 1-The Nakagin Capsule Tower research Study on flexibility in design and form in architeture. Learning the concept idea of “finding a home away from home.“ It can be use as pop-up events, work and study space that wall can be remove or move to different area, to create partial private space.

Case Study 2- The Student Hotel Research on student housing, meeting student needs in living. To make the living comfortable and the sense of belonging are very important, Design gaming space, share open kitchen will enhance culture interaction.

Case Study 3- Federal Center South Building Study on sutainability in design and work space. It uses bioclimatic design, such as intelligent envelop, solar control, and renewble.As part of the project;s effort to reuse existing materials. The narrow 60-foot floor plate optimizes daylight penetration, reducing the need for artificial light and associated energy costs. Then, natural ventilation was originally considered to save energy and promote occupants’ connection to the outdoors. The project is one of the first in the region to use structural piles for geothermal heating and cooling, as well as a phase change thermal storage tank.

Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.

Case Study 4- Oodi Helsinki Central Library Study on mutli-funtional design. Focus on study area, how people feel comfortable staying all day and read books.

The design divides the functions of the library into three distinct levels: an active ground floor that extends the town square into an interior space; “book heaven” on the upper level. The ground floor of Oodi extends the Kansalaistori square into an interior public space. The purpose of the ground floor is to make each of the facilities of the library apparent and accessible and provide a non-commercial interior space open to all, every day of the week. The middle floor consists of flexible rooms arranged around the intimate nooks and corners that inhabit the spaces between the trusses of the bridge structure.

Therefore, there are both nagtive parts and positive parts in the journey. Also, there is up and down moments. Transformation is an important idea in the space. On the one hand, look at the diagram from the top to botton, fragmentaions metaphor for the difficulties of each student is facing, and students become more strong and independent through out the subtraction. On the other hand, when look from down to up, it’s the goal of how to help each student adapt the new environment and become more united. International Student Resouce Center is the pathway of helpping each student to become successful in their own journey. The abstraction of decinstructivism is an infinite possbilities of International student’s future. I want to create abstract form to make the space more intertsting, interact, fun and functional for each users.

The concept is inspired by LA multi-culture. The journey of international student study aboard is a process of deconstruct hardship and reconstruct and adapting new environment . Three floor is design for difference user, and it transform from private to open. It translates to the breaking down or demolishing of a constructed structure, such as walls. It unleashes infinite possibilities and freedom to experiment and flexablity without the pressure espace and reduces barriers of international student communication. The resource center gives the student a fun, free, inviting and comfortable place to meet others.

Deconstruction encourages radical freedom of form and the open manifestation of complexity in a building rather than strict attention to conventional design elements (such as right angles or grids). It literally translates to the breaking down, or demolishing of a constructed structure, It is the unleashing of infinite possibilities of playing around with forms and volumes. The finished visual appearance is characterized by giving people different sensibility.

Public Area Color Concept: Vivid Color attract student and create fun and youth combination in the space in order to reduce stress of students.

Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. Blue is often used to decorate offices because research has shown that people are more productive in blue rooms.

Red is a bright, warm color that evokes strong emotions.Also, it is associated with love, warmth, and comfort.

Orange is a combination of yellow and red and is considered an energetic color.

It is calls to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm, and energetic.

FF&E FF&E Concept: The interior space should create a relaxed atmosphere for international student so they will feel like being at home.

Furniture style and architectural style form a strong contrast, the exterior are solid protection, and the interior are more soft, comfortable, light and flexible.

By using rounded shape furnitures will give people the feeling of softness. All user should feel very free being in the space, FF&E such as removable wall panel and furniture will give people various seselection whether they want to have privacy or not. They can sit whereever they want and be able to move the furniture whereever they like.
