The Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia hosts a permanent exhibition- beautifully, professionally and clearly presentedcalled the National Treasury of Georgia. It is a three-part narrative of the country from an archaeological, numismatic and medieval perspective, traveling the expanse of time from the 6th century BC to

1834 and allowing you to discover the most important stages of Georgian development- aesthetic, literary and cultural; the forming of Georgian Statehood. Various exhibits from the Gold Collection have been shown in Europe and the US, with the intention of conveying that the Golden Fleece is actually no myth. We spoke to Director David Lortkipanidze to find out more. “We’re not new to Europe- we’ve been there before, and you could always find us in an important place between Europe and Asia.”

5000 years of cultural contact can be witnessed within the exhibition space. Our Georgian ancestors were able to produce high level objects, such as the iconic gold lion, but were by no means isolated in their craft, as influences of the Kura-Arax culture (early trans-Caucasian civilization

that existed from 3400 BC until about 2000 BC, stretching across the South Caucasus to Northern Iran) can be seen. The gold exhibition highlights the famous legend of the Golden Fleece, set at a time when there was a massive Greek expansion into the world, with which came the great tales of Jason and the Argonauts. The artefacts on display, beautiful examples of detailed goldsmitry, most of which were found at a rich dig site in Vani, show not just the mythology of the legend, but also archaeological proof that Jason’s Colchis actually existed in Western Georgia. The sophistication grows with time and by the Roman period, when Georgia was part of the first unified kingdom, Iberia, we can see the same aesthetically pleasing gold objects but now with stones set into the pieces.

“95% of the objects in the Treasury were found in archaeological excavations on Georgian territory. The Georgian School of Archaeology has been strong since Soviet times, and the work goes on.”

artefacts, with the accompanying production tools, the first experimental nature of the craft can be appreciated, along with knowledge transferral, as similar tools were found in both antique and medieval digs.

In the small but fascinating numismatic collection, offering some 3,500 coins, you can see the first coins minted in Georgia almost 2500 years ago.

My favourite is… For sentimental reasons, David Lortkipanidze chooses the Gold Vani collection as his personal favourite, as he was with his

father, Otar, when it was discovered. Aged 6 at the time, he wasn’t allowed to touch the objects, but he remembers well the excitement and wonder of the discovery- and seeing them brought out of the ground, destined to be put on display as an example of the strength, sophistication and long history of Georgian statehood.

“At one time Georgia had 5-10 mints but these were lost with Independence.” With the Georgian mints, some of which have inscriptions in Arabic (examples of the periods of Persian influence), are foreign coins, once again demonstrating the strong links between Georgia and the rest of the world through clear and developed trade and foreign policy. “The high level aesthetic objects show that, though Georgia is small, it has always paid attention to what is happening in the world and followed the trends, from the early period to medieval times and beyond.” Even as far back as the Classical Period, pre-Christianity, Georgia was clearly aesthetically developed, as demonstrated by the silver writing set found in the courtyard of the Tsvetistkhoveli churchyard, which opens the medieval collection, and the stone with a finely carved alphabet. “Once Christianity took off in Georgia, the aesthetic beauty of craftsmanship became intertwined with belief. No better is this seen than in the numerous religious icons on display, some done in the rarest form worldwide: mosaic.” In the embroidery and Cloisonné enamel

Adjara

As Recommended by the Head of the Georgian National Tourism Administration Mr. George Chogovadze

www.georgia.travel www.fb.com/GeorgiaAndTravel

Adjara is one of the most historical regions of Georgia, located in the south-western part of the country on the Black Sea coast. It borders Turkey and the Shavsheti and Arsiani mountain ranges in the south. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters and hot summers. On the Black Sea coast, the humidity is much higher than in the highlands with temperatures during the summer reaching 22-24° C and in the winter 4-6 °C. The administrative center is Batumi, which is an important port on the Black Sea. The history of Adjara dates back to the Paleolithic era. It was closely connected with Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine cultures and served as a sea port for all of Georgia. Adjara was part of the Kingdom of Colchis (8th c. BC) and of the West Georgian Kingdom – Lazika. In the 9th century AD it became a part of the Kingdom of Tao-Klarjeti and at the end of the 10th century, a part of the United Georgian State. At the end of the 15th century, after the disintegration of the Georgian State, it fell under the control of the Gurieli princes. In 1547 it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks, resulting in a part of the population adopting the Muslim faith. In the 19th century, the Adjara region became a part of the Russian Empire. In 1921 it became a part of the Soviet Union, and in 1991 – an autonomous republic in the independent state of Georgia. According to historical sources (Chronicles of Kartli), Adjara was the first region of Georgia where Christianity was preached by the Holy Apostles, namely St. Andrew the First-Called, St. Simeon the Canaanite and St. Matthias, who were sent to Georgia by the Virgin, who was chosen to be a patron saint of the country. According to legend, St. Matthias died in Adjara and was buried in the Gonio Apsaros Fortress. The churches of St. Nicholas and St. Mary in Batumi, as well as Skhalta Church and Gonio Fortress, are of outstanding architectural significance. The wall painting of Skhalta Church is an important work of medieval Georgian mural art.

sT. niCholas ChurCh The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas is located in a historic area of the city (20, King Parnavaz St). The domed church with a bell-tower on the west side and a large, protruding apse on the east was built at the request of the local Greeks in 1865-1871. With its exterior forms and interior artistic rendering, it divulges close links to monuments of Byzantine architecture. The interior wall painting was executed in 2002. Today, the church is owned by the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Chavchavadze Ave.) was constructed in 1898-1902 through the donations of a well-known Georgian oil producer and Maecenas, Stephane Zubalashvili. The three-nave basilica was built in the Pseudo-Gothic style. The interior of the construction is decorated with wall paintings on Biblical themes while the exterior is decorated with stained glass and bronze statues of St. Andrew the Apostle and St. Nino, Illuminators of Georgia. This structure represents one of the most remarkable buildings in the city. The church has been owned by the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1989. Nowadays, it is the main cathedral of the Batumi and Lazeti Diocese.

sKhalTa MonasTery Located in the village of Kinchauri (the Municipality of Khulo), the single-nave Church of the Virgin Mary at Skhalta Monastery was constructed in the middle of the 13th century at the site of a 4th C. Christian shrine. The visitor’s attention is attracted by its wide protruding apse and large porches on the south and north sides. The interior of the church is decorated with the so-called Palaeologan-style of wall painting, executed at the turn of the 14th -15th centuries. Apart from the main church, there is a small chapel built on the ruins of a 10th-11th century church and a medieval, vaulted wine cellar, still containing dolia buried in the ground.

gonio apsaros MuseuMreserve (Gonio-Kvariati Area, 55, Apsaros St (Batumi Municipality) Apsaros was the largest fortress built by the Romans in the first century A.D. on the east coast of the Black Sea. It represented one of the most important centers of the so-called Pontos Limes, a defender of Caucasian borders. Roman and Byzantine authors have related the history and name of the city to the myth of the Argonauts. Built with blocks of ashlar stones, the fortress has survived in nearly the same condition as it appeared originally. Having massive cubic dimensions, the nowadays 5 m high wall (measurements: 245 x195 m) encircles 4.78 hectares of space. It once had 22 protruding towers and four gates. Apsaros retained its importance until the Middle Ages (it has been called Gonio since the 12th C.). Building layers of the fortress date back to the time of Emperor Justinian (most towers) and the Ottoman dominion. Historical sources state that St. Matthias the Apostle, who accompanied St. Andrew the Apostle to preach Christianity in Georgia, died in Adjara and was buried in the Gonio Fortress. His burial place is marked by a cross.

Some fortifications, a small, single-nave church built on the site of a large three-nave basilica from the Justinian era, an early Byzantine bath, and other household constructions have been found on the territory of the Acropolis.

The Double Charm of Georgia’s Mountain Resorts

The uniqueness of Georgia is in its equally fascinating mountains and sea. Hiking-lovers should be especially interested in Upper Adjara this summer season. It’s attractions like Green Lake, the Petrified Forest and the fabulous scenery of Khikhani Castle will leave each traveller stunned for sure. Georgia’s each moun-

14

tain resort is potentially interesting destination for the tourists. Gudauri, Bakuriani, Svaneti and Goderdzi resorts offer something totally different depending on the season, starting with the white landscapes of winter transforming into green in the summer. What’s more, all the above resorts have so many novelties to introduce this year.

In Bakuriani the Mitarbi Resort has been developed so far and the Austrian company Doppelmayr has constructed the new cableways there. The long-term, unique development project of BakurianiMitarbi resort will become one of the most successful examples of partnership between the government and private sector. Three cableways and ski trails will

be constructed this year on Mitarbi territory and for the first time in 30 years the resort will once again host visitors. The ambitious plans for further development of the resort Bakuriani include construction of Biathlon Park by the end of the current year according to the world standards, which will attract more tourists as well as sport lovers.

The summer season is unprecedentedly active in Bakuriani. Rides are very popular. The cableways have been working in summer for two years already on Didveli. Visitors will have an opportunity to ride Toboggan, built by the Slovakian company Tatralift. Moreover, the rehabilitation of sidewalks and roads will begin this year and the main park will be

renovated. Future plans include building a Hockey field, Kerling zone and an Ice Castle. Furthermore, an aqua park will be built on the territory surrounding Didveli, the construction of which will be finished in two years. Alexandre Onoprishvili, Head of the Mountain Resorts Development Company,

standard, built by Slovenian company Alliance, were opened in Gudauri and Bakuriani last year, designed for both professional sportsmen and amateurs. Goderdzi Resort hosted a Business-Economic forum under the patronage of the Vice Premier, Dimitry Kumsishvili, early in April on which the Adjaran government announced its decision to give five land plots for a symbolic price to the investors wanting to build a hotel on this new resort. Construction of a 100-room premium class hotel has already started in Goderdzi and the Mountain Resorts Development Company said the construction of a number of other new hotels is planned in the near future.

ways bringing the resort back to life. A toboggan run – popular in Europe and the USA – was built in Bakuriani, Didveli by Slovakian company tatralift and opened this July Bike trails of international

The large scale project connected with developing Gudauri has been prepared by one of the best world renowned Canadian company Ecozine. The plan offers a renewed vision of development of Kobi-Gudauri territory, constructing additional touristic infrastructure and creating new touristic products for the visitors. The project should significantly increase the investment appeal of the place. Consistent development towards turning this resort into that of an international level has started, the number of apart-hotels and traditional hotels has doubled since 2010. Every detail is planned beforehand in the project. The land development project is particularly important, as this is an issue for Gudauri for years. This place should become more and more interesting for investors. It will turn into a cluster and become closer to Kazbegi by means of village Kobi. New cableway is being constructed in Gudauri this year, making it possible to offer additional skiing trails for the visitors.

Alexandre Onoprishvili: “Adjara offers unique landscapes and nature, which are extremely attractive for hiking trips. With the support of the Tourism Administration of Adjara we will assign special guides in Goderdzi who can provide tourists all the information they need about the resort and help them get the most out of the trails to Green Lake, the Petrified Forest, Khikhani Castle and the Botanical Garden. For those tourists who prefer living closer to nature, we have created a special Tent Town, which can host up to 40 visitors and costs 10 GEL a night. The cableways will work daily from 10 am to 4 pm.” Hatsvali cableway is now open in Svaneti, while works are underway in Tetnuldi, where will be the longest ski run in Transcaucasia (9.5 km), having the biggest vertical drop (1.7 km). Another novelty this season is the Summer Pass: costing just 60 GEL, it combines all four resorts. Visitors can use all cableways with this pass and get other integrated benefits like special prices for hotels, free Toboggan rides, and more. Alexandre Onoprishvili: We have hired the leading company on the market of management of cableways - the French Des Alpes. We invited Experts, who will train the mountain managers, they will study in Georgia as well as France and we will have professional, certified mountain managers. They will have all the skills necessary to manage any mountain resort. We also plan purchasing new work equipment for the rescue service, the staff is trained annually. We are cooperating with the National Academy of Ski Resorts USA, with the Guides Association in France, who also trained our rescue team and the first ever Georgian female guide – Nata Japaridze among them. We work

a lot in terms of marketing – taking part in international fairs and exhibitions. Outdoor advertisements, billboards and video ads are widely advertised internationally, attracting increased number of tourists in to the resorts. The interest and demand on destinations offered by Georgia is quite high.

Black Sea Beach Resorts By Katie ruth davies

Top 4

beaChes in adjara KobuleTi Kobuleti village - a popular tourist zone- is built along a single stretch of road running parallel to the beach. While the beach is stony and the water deep, the beach area and cool treeline behind it offer space and a refreshing atmosphere guaranteed to soothe away the stresses of work and everyday life. The road parallel to the beach is awash with guest houses, hotels, restaurants and souvenirs, while further inland- in the village proper, you’ll find a market, hospital and train station. Just outside of town, only opening in the cool summer evenings, is the amusement park ‘Tsitsinatela’ (FireFly), featuring rides for both the young and the fearless. You’ll easily spot the park just off the main highway- its big wheel flashing garishly along to the happy screams of the thrill-seekers. Buy a card at one of the two entrances and add credit to it for the rides.

18

ureKi Grab your spot on this black sandy beach before the crowds fill it up elbow-to-elbow- before 9am and after 4pm, when you can quietly immerse yourself in the magnetic and therapeutic black sand (proven to aid in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and other illnesses) or relax in the warm waves. The beach slopes gently and shallowly into the sea, making it the ideal holiday spot for those with children. Locals also offer kid’s entertainment on the beach, with inflatable water slides and horse and quad bike rides. In the village proper (the street behind the treeline running parallel to the sea) you’ll find restaurants, fairgrounds, mini-markets, exchange points and souvenirs. Note, there are few ATMs (outside the Kolkhida Sanitorium) so consider withdrawing cash in advance, or even before you get to Ureki.

baTuMi The capital of the Adjara region, Batumi city is the prize development project of recent years, offering everything the discerning tourist could desire- beach, mountains, clubs, museums and more, with accommodation and dining of all standards, from luxury to budget. The Boulevard, dating back to 1881 and at 7km claiming to be one of the longest in the world, is still being added to and offers an amazing walk along the stony beach past parks, gardens and restaurants. We recommend a visit to the Dolphinarium where, if you book in advance, you can swim calmly with the dolphins before the playful acrobatics show begins.

19

KvariaTi Close to the border with Turkey, Kvariati is a stony beach resort nestled between mountains and sea. The water is deep but cleaner than that of Batumi. The trucks speeding through make the single road a little unsafe, but people come here for the beach, not for strolling. There are beach bars and restaurants and some of the hotels have their own pools. Between Kvariati and Batumi is the town of Gonio where you can visit the black stone Fortress, which dates back to the first century, and the Museum containing various archaeological finds from the Hellenistic Period.

beaCh Tips Keep your ears open for the cries of ‘Tsheli simindi!”- locals in big straw hats and sandals walking up and down the beach offering hot fresh corn cobs sprinkled generously with salt for 1-2 GEL. Also nice to have delivered straight to your beach chair is ‘Tsivi ludi’- cold beer!

20

It’s All in the Details… By Katie ruth davies Coming in various sizes- from the giant Ali & Nino moving sculpture you’ll spot on the beach to the monumental Medea of the Colchis overlooking a spouting ground-fountain, Batumi has plenty to offer in terms of statues and sculptures, all of which have a story behind them to open up a totally new educational aspect on Georgia. Each month we’ll be taking you to a few of these statues, sculptures and other architectural treats, giving you some titbits of information that even your tour guide may not know! As most do when starting out a holiday- head straight to the sea! A great place to start this Statue Spotting Tour is Miracles Park, right on the ‘land’s end’ near the Radisson Blu Hotel and the other new glass skyscrapers.

ali & nino MeChaniCal sCulpTure Ali & Nino, the work of Georgian sculptor Tamar Kvesitadze, is an eight meter moving statue depicting the eternal love of the fictional characters created by Azerbaijani author Kurban Said in 1937. The novel ‘Ali & Nino’ tells the story of a young Azerbaijani Muslim man and a Georgian Christian princess in the time of the First World War. The tragic story ends with the lovers separated by the invasion of Soviet Russia. The statues move in ten-minute cycles, embracing, uniting as one, and then separating. At night the sculpture is lit by changing colours so make sure to come back and see it again after sunset! Now cross the park, walking towards the port. See that white oriental-ornamental clock tower-cum-fountain? That will be worth visiting at 7pm tonight!

21

The ChaCha Tower This fountain tower, widely known as “The Chacha Tower” is an exact copy of a building that stood in Batumi at the beginning of the 20th century. Opened in 2012, the 25-meter clock tower is surrounded by four fountain pools. Rather unusually, yet quintessentially Georgian, each day at 19:00 for ten minutes the fountains spout Chacha- strong Georgian alcohol- free for you to try! Time to head into town- cross Gogebashvili Street and turn right onto Parnavaz Mepe Street. Four blocks in and you’ll come to the famed Piazza Square- a quaint Mediterranean style complex which has hosted the concerts of such international greats as Macy Gray, Sting and Chris Botti.

The piaZZa CloCK Tower The building in which the tower is set originally served as the commercial department of a Tbilisi bank. It now houses a hotel and restaurant and is protected as a building of culture heritage. Reconstructed in 2010-2011, the tower had sculptures and a balcony added and the clock was repaired. The head of architectural works for the whole Piazza was Vazha Orbeladze.

MeMed abashidZe Head four blocks along Giorgi Mazniashvili Street until you get to Memed Abashidze Street and there turn left. Hidden in the trees opposite the popular BK restaurant on Europe Square, you’ll find Memed Abashidze. This statue, made by Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli at the request of Abashidze’s grandchild, has been relocated twice before- from its original home at the central entrance to Batumi Boulevard to the Batumi Government House and then to its current home in the green of Europe Square. Memed Abashidze was fluent in several languages and spent his life translating Arabic, Persian, and Turkish works into Georgian, advocating pro-Georgian orientation among Adjarian Muslims and attempting to bring Christian and Muslim Georgians together. Shortly after the British military took Batumi from the Ottomans, Abashidze became chairman of the newly elected Mejlis (National Assembly) and began a campaign for the incorporation of an autonomous Adjara into Georgia. When the Soviet Red Army occupied Georgia in early 1921, Abashizde became a member of the Revolutionary Committee of the

22

Batumi district and helped draft the first constitution of the Adjara ASSR. He also served as head of a Muslim charity society 1919-1921 and Editor of magazine ‘Muslim Georgia’. He fell victim to the 1937 Stalin repressions. Now look up! There in the same Europe Square, perched atop a tall column is the brass and gold statue of Medea, opened by ex-President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, in 2007.

Medea Medea is the famous witch, or beautiful enchantress, and Colchian Princess from the Jason & The Argonauts myth. When Jason came to Colchis (in western Georgia) to claim his inheritance by bringing back the Golden Fleece, Medea, descendent of the God Helios, fell in love with him and, on his promise to marry her, helped Jason to overcome a number of challenges for the Fleece. The ending to the story of Medea varies dramatically- in most cases painting her as a revengeful and powerful woman with no fear of killing those who stood in her way. For Georgians she quite simply stands for the truth of an ancient history entwining Georgia and the foundations of modern Europe!

CafÉ fanTasy (also Known as ‘The oCTopus’) Café Fantasy or ‘The Octopus’ mosaic sculpture-building was a coffeehouse situated on the original Batumi Boulevard. It was designed by Georgian architect George Chakhava and Zurab Kapanadze, Professor at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. The Octopus, with a multi-colored surface, is decorated with various sea animals including dolphins (symbol of Batumi), starfish, seahorses, and fish. It was built in eight months and opened as a café in 1975, quickly becoming a popular venue for both locals and guests. During the Soviet period visitors to The Octopus could buy freshly brewed coffee, ice-cream and soft drinks, but guests had to leave by 10pm due to the proximity to the Turkish border. The café closed in 2000 and has fallen into disrepair. There is, however, hope that the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency will grant the site the status of an immovable monument.

For the last treat, head straight back to the sea along Nodar Dumbadze Street. When you hit the Boulevard, turn left and enjoy a stroll. Once you get to the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, with Hilton in the background, you’ll see our next Batumi treasure.

Welcome to the Main Event – Batumi’s Dolphin Show Exclusive Interview with Berdo Kutubidze By beqa Kirtava

While Batumi has a windfall of must-see attractions that you ought to pay a visit to, nothing gets as much attention as the city’s lovable dolphins, which have managed to win many hearts and deliver stellar performances over the years. Since there’s no way you’ll miss the chance to attend at least one of Batumi Dolphinarium’s shows, we decided to give you a little insider’s look behind the scenes and obtained an exclusive interview with the center’s PR Manager and Show Host, Berdo Kutubidze.

24

firstly, please tell our readers about the history and current state of the dolphinarium Batumi’s first dolphinarium was launched in 1975. Back then it was the first dolphinarium in the USSR and was one of the largest of its kind in the world. Its existence, alongside all the other attractions, made our coastal city and the entire region in general more attractive to tourists. Apart from the locals, the dolphinarium was often visited by numerous

foreign guests, who specifically traveled all the way here to witness the show. I believe the immense popularity of this facility is why the dolphin is now the de-facto symbol of Batumi. During the early 1990s, the dolphinarium stopped functioning due to the poor political-economic state of the country. Batumi Dolphinarium was reopened 20 years after its closure. The facility now meets the highest standards needed for keeping marine mammals. It consists of

two reservoirs - one for pinnipeds and one for small cectae (total amount of water – 3 724 000 liters), alongside one quarantine, two additional and two performance pools. Water is mechanically filtered and purified every two hours. Additionally, the water temperature (min 14-15 C˚ max 27-28 C˚), salinity and PH are controlled constantly. Batumi Dolphinarium also includes a special laboratory which conducts bacteriological and chemical monitoring of the water. And to ensure maximum safety, our dolphins are under constant supervision by our qualified specialists. The revamped dolphinarium is the first building fully adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, as it’s equipped with wheelchair ramps and elevators. The main amphitheater is divided into four sections and has 795 seats. what is needed to create the perfect environment for the dolphins?

environment isn’t usually enough for dolphins to give birth, however, this marks the 6th time our dolphinarium has welcomed newborn dolphins. Furthermore, our pinniped number is also on the rise, 5 seals (Guduna, Giguna, Soso, Pele and John) have been born since the opening day. And last but not least, our aquarium, which is 50 years old, also has many fish which were born here. Needless to say, all this couldn’t have been achieved without the perfect conditions created by our amazing staff. Could you tell us a little about batumi dolphinarium’s instructors? They are a very cheerful and friendly team, led by the Manager of the Sea Mammals Center, Tengo Tserodze. Dolphins are an inseparable part of his life and it is thanks to his and our former director, Natalya Zoidze’s, trust that I currently work here. The positive feelings from our show are so overwhelming that a lot of the visitors suddenly get the desire to work as dolphin trainers, not realizing how hard it is. Only the best of the best are privileged to train

the dolphins and I would once again like to express my gratitude and love for our boys and girls: Kakha Akhaladze, Lasha Kharati, Giorgi Kirvalidze, Ekaterine Tserodze, Anna Chulkova, Jaba Diasamidze, Roma Lomidze, Zaal Andghuladze, Akaki Chanturia, Irakli Gogrichiani and Giga Loria. what can you tell us about batumi dolphinarium’s future plans? any changes on the way? Very soon a museum will be opened on the first floor of the dolphinarium, where we’ll exhibit all the photos, articles, celebrity quotes and “impression book” writings about the facility since its first day of opening. As for other future plans, there are always many changes and developments. After all, we’re talking about living creatures and a live show. Many people who buy tickets have already seen the show, but are interested in seeing the newborn dolphins with their moms. You should definitely grab a chance to see them, too!

The most important things are constant love and dedication. Apart from the scheduled 24 hour shifts, our employees often work full days and many extra hours. Svaneti:

Blazing Trails

By Tony hanmer For all my nearly two decades in Georgia, initially visiting Svaneti on average three times a year and then just taking the plunge and moving here, I’ve spent relatively very little time off-road. Even my 2007 walk from Etseri to Ushguli and back, from which time I date my decision to live here, was all on the main roads. That could, and should, change soon, with good reason. How much am I missing, aside from the odd hike or horse trip I’ve made, much too few and far between?

28

What communities do you think of if I say “Svaneti”? Mestia and Ushguli as a start, likely. Upper Svaneti’s capital, and its highest village (highest in Georgia, and Europe too). What about: Dizi, source of most of the marble and alabaster of the magnificent stations of the Moscow Metro? Etseri, location of the highest of all Svaneti’s watchtowers? Becho, with unparalleled views of Ushba side-on? Which village has more churches per capita than any other in Georgia? (Latali.) Above which can you get the peaks of Ushba and Elbrus in the same

view? (Nakra.) How many mineral springs are there here, and where are they exactly? (Most villages have at least a few, all unique in composition.) Best church icon collection? (Pari, which means “shield” in Georgian.) Which village is closest to the new Tetnuldi ski resort? (Mulakhi.) Where can I find that amazing outdoor church fresco of a holy battle, featuring a devil’s head being split by a sword? (Lenjeri.) Where can one see Ushba reflected in lakes, or catch the best river trout? Is the roaring Enguri navigable anywhere? Where can I

camp, or not? Best waterfalls? Paragliding, wingsuiting and other extreme summer or winter sports locations? Other villages include Adishi, Ipari (more than one such named), Chuberi, and many others too. What about Lentekhi, capital of Lower Svaneti? That’s a whole other side. The “high road” from it (north of Kutaisi) up to Ushguli is closed by snow roughly from November through April, and needs a 4x4 and some nerves anyway, but offers spectacular alternate views of a large part of Svaneti much less seen by tourists. Well worth the effort. A hiking trail is being set up through large parts of the Caucasus, a grand project which will link many national parks and bring new visitors and attention to hitherto unexplored, unknown villages. It is being planned and produced by an energetic group of foreigners who have one thing in common: significant time already spent in the region, leading to a deep love of it, going back 15 years. (Several of them were also Peace Corps volunteers.) They hail from the USA, Canada, UK and Poland; several of them are at least functional in Georgian. The Georgian Ministry of Tourism supports the work too. See http://transcaucasiantrail.org/ en/ for all the details. Most of the group has been touring all over Svaneti in the early summer of 2016, holding village information meetings. Not mostly to inform the locals, but vitally also to hear from them their various views, answer questions and concerns, and get their blessing for the project if they agree with it, which has always been the case. Local people hopefully will be fully involved as

29

volunteers in making the trail, and it will support their communities’ infrastructure through bringing tourist attention and money to them. They can host people in their homes, guide them in and around the things which make each village unique, introduce them to local culture and language, and more. After all, Svaneti (for example) is more than just Mestia and Ushguli! And every village here is worth getting to know, for its own special reasons. The entire trail will be mapped using the latest technology, including an online version to which people can add details, such as guest house locations, museums, ancient local features and so on. This puts anyone onto the world stage of the

30

Internet, and gives all these communities a chance to shine in their unique ways in friendly competition, even in various languages. The initial project may last some years, as trails need to be made or at least renovated, as well as marked and mapped out accurately using GPS and other tools. Once it is finished, it must then be maintained: kept free of rock-falls and excess vegetation, its standard red-white trail guide markings repainted and so on. But the main work will have been done. This summer, the physical work will focus on building the trail connecting Upper Svaneti and Racha, as well as widening and renovating it where it already exists. A fairly large and ambitious undertaking,

perhaps, but with local help and enthusiasm it can be accomplished, leaving an ongoing legacy for future years and generations. This is all for you, Svaneti, Georgia, Caucasus! (The photos include Etseri’s TCT meeting, in the main school; and the team with the author and his wife.) Inside Svaneti: Let’s Do This By Tony hanmer

Svaneti offers so many thematic possibilities for the tourist or visitor to explore that one is simply spoiled for choice. Consider: Cheese, including local sulguni and how it is made, from start (milking) to finish. Try your hand at any part of the process. Local dishes, of which there are quite a few more than just the better-known meat pie, k’ubdari. Don’t just eat, find out how they are made. Gold panning. Well, this, although a historically ancient industry, is currently a controversial one due to protests in Ieli over foreign exploitation. Handle with care! You might be limited to asking a few questions, and not be able to try it yourself.

32

Bird watching. Svaneti is home to many different birds, from tiny songsters and the largest raptors to a few surprising seasonal visitors, such as the hoopoe, which comes up from southern Africa. Horse riding. One way to get a bit off the beaten track into less visited places and landscapes. Available all over, either with an accompanying guide or without, for all levels of experience from novice to expert. Farming. Anything from the grains to temperate fruits and potatoes, corn and beans, and everything made from them. Song and dance. Of course, like every part of Georgia, Svaneti has its own traditions in these arts, unique and worth

getting to know. Try to see and hear a concert, or ask for lessons of any length and number, as your time, budget, and local conditions allow. Language lessons. Perhaps not for the faint of heart, as Svan will make Georgian seem easy, what with its eighteen vowels and some other quite challenging consonants among four dialects. But the respect to be gained from asking, and trying, is huge. Photography/video. Almost so obvious as not to be worth mentioning, as every season has its unique landscapes and festivities on display, all spectacular. But with virtually every phone also a camera these days, drones on the rise, and

professional equipment also in use, the possibilities are vast, depending on your needs and experience. You have the chance not only to make and take away memories forever, but also to help in publicizing this hidden corner of the world by what you record and share.

Museums, There are more than the main one in Mestia and another in Ushguli! Both communities have others worth visiting, and there are various types, such as towers and old houses, residences of famous people, and so on, here and there.

History lessons, either in the museums themselves or from other resident historians, of which there is likely to be at least one in each village. There is so much to learn here, century upon century of fascinating stories and details, going back millennia, to help give context to what one is seeing and discovering. Hiking. Another way to get off-road, at

Local industries to explore (logging/ sawmills, mining, dams, cement and gravel production, stone work, road construction and renovation). Or, how is your job being done here? Another consideration: what’s missing but needed (e.g. garbage removal, storage and, dare one even say it, recycling services)? These are just a few of the ways in which one can interact on deeper levels than the superficial typical tourist ones. They will widen one’s experience of Svaneti and give unforgettable, multi-dimensional memories, as well as strengthening one’s connections with communities and people and possibly contributing to their cultural and social enrichment into the bargain.

Churches. Pretty well every village in Svaneti will have at least one, usually ancient (up to about 15 centuries type of ancient). Each is unique in history, setting, architecture, and possibly fresco and iconographic art as well. After all, nearly inaccessible Svaneti was Georgia’s royal treasure storehouse during the many centuries of invasion which the country suffered, and most of the treasure sent here ended up staying... Local crafts (wood, stone, textiles, metal, etc). Not only to buy, but to see how they are made. Carving in wood is a local specialty, to a world-class level, and commissions may be undertaken also. Biking. Either with your own equipment or rented from a place such as Mestia’s Tetnuldi Hotel. A third way to break out of the ordinary travel mode and strike out for wilder parts. Artists and writers to meet. Many communities will have these, too, and you need only ask where they are and how to visit them. See a studio and hear some local poetry or prose. Local government. Not only in Mestia but, for example, meeting the gamgebeli (mayor) of any village. Find out how the

The Art of Opera throughout Georgia By vazha Tavberidze Free tip: If you want to make a Georgian proud, inquire about Georgian culture. That is preferably after complimenting Georgian wine and local cuisine. Said Georgian, often with tears in his eyes, will show you (or tell you about, depending on the situation) some videos of Georgian dance, or make you listen to Georgian folk music. Both are exquisite and, provided you are in possession of any semblance of relatively good taste, it’s hard not to like them. However, while Georgian folk music has the power to entrance, the genius of Georgian voice is not confined to the revered tunes of polyphonic sound. Over the years, Georgia has routinely produced some of the world’s most sublime operatic talents to have graced the major stages of European theaters, including the famed La Scalla in Milan, Italy. Paata Burchuladze, Valeriano Gamgebeli, Lado Ataneli and Nino Surguladze, to name but a few, helped to establish the trend that this small country is a real talent factory. Add to that the genius of ballet maestros like George Balanchine (Balanchivadze) and Vakhtang Chabukiani, and the swanlike elegance of famed Georgian prima ballerinas Nino Ananiashvili and Elene Glurjidze, and you are guaranteed to get approving nods and revered glances from anyone who understands this refined art. The art of Opera and ballet, while obviously not everyone’s cup of tea, is very much cherished and loved in Georgia. And most importantly – it has become an inseparable and very significant part of Georgian culture.

Tbilisi It was expected that the much-anticipated re-opening of Tbilisi National Opera (and Ballet House) would spark society’s interest. What was unexpected, though, was how quickly this spark turned into a major fire. Over six years, society watched quietly as the Opera House, which boasts an impressive 165 years of existence, was refit, curiosity ever-piqued thanks to the fact that the necessary financial costs (approximately 100 mln GEL) were made available through the good will (and coffers) of the country’s richest man and former Prime Minister, Bidzina Ivanishvili. After six years of renovation, and a renewed repertoire, the Opera House has become a major attraction for any aficionado of opera or ballet performance.

36

Famed for its Moorish design, the Opera House was so impressive that the famous French writer Alexander Dumas, spared no efforts in singing it praises in recollections of his Caucasus pilgrimage: “I thought I was at the theater of Pompeii… I have never seen such an impressive hall of theater in my life…” With a painful history of being twice burned down, a location change and financial problems following the devastating civil war in the 1990s, the Tbilisi Opera House still retains its pull. A massive 3.5 ton chandelier with 800 lightbulbs generously sheds light on what is, well, everything that Tbilisi is – a wondrous, seemingly magical mixture of two worlds. Masterly combining the best of what East and West have to offer, it makes for an impressive sight to see, even if you aren’t fond of performance and just want to look around. And if the regular long queues are anything to go by, the future of Georgian Opera and Ballet, attendance-wise at least, looks rather secure. And sure enough, your proud Georgian friends will insist you go there. Don’t offer resistance – apart from making said Georgians content, it will be worth every minute spent. WHERE: The National Opera and Ballet Theater is situated on Rustaveli Avenue right in the center of Tbilisi. If you can’t find your way, ask around, everyone knows where it is. And if by chance somebody doesn’t, feel free to admonish them. Public sympathy guaranteed.

KuTaisi Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest and one-time capital city, boasts a centuries old reputation of being a cultural stronghold of the country, and its beautiful opera theater stands as a testimony to that fact. Well over a hundred years old, Kutaisi Opera House has recently been renovated, acquiring a rather uncanny resemblance to its Vienna counterpart in the process. Unlike Tbilisi Opera, which mainly stages adaptations of world-acclaimed plays, Kutaisi Opera has throughout the years opted for original Georgian production. Bagiskide (‘Edge of the Garden’ in Georgian) Park, famed as the city’s main gathering place and subject of many an anecdote, encircles the Kutaisi Opera House.

baTuMi Batumi, the seaside jewel of Georgia, hosts the lion’s share of musical festivals that are held in Georgia every year and the art of opera is no exception. Batumi’s State Musical Center combines the Batumi State Symphony Orchestra, Batumi State Cappella, the State Theater of Batumi Opera and Ballet, and the Children and Youth Music Theater. Undoubtedly the most modern of all its Georgian counterparts, the Batumi State Musical Center has a hall with modern equipment with 1100 Spanish chairs and a large Spanish chandelier. There is also an exhibition space on the third floor which doubles as a venue for pop and jazz concerts.

What to Expect: The Opera House offers a renovated program for both operatic and ballet plays, with performances by world-famous stars on the premiere. The performances are week in, week out, with prices varying from 10 to 50 Gel.

Get a Piece of the Nobels in Batumi

There are many museums in Batumi that can describe the historical past of the country and capture the interest of tourists, but one of our favorites is The Nobel Brothers’ Batumi Technological Museum. Opened in 2007 in the building of the former Police Department, the museum gives you a chance to delve into Georgian history and some of the many events and persons of the industrial-economic life of old Batumi. Of the numerous interesting aspects of this museum, the most fascinating is the

connection between Batumi and the world-renowned Nobel Brothers. The Nobels worked in Batumi in 1921-1923 and were the first to set up transit of oil between Baku and Europe via Georgia. The museum is the former house and work place of the Nobel brothers, in which they lived before moving to Baku. The museum exhibition depicts the technological achievements that were introduced in Batumi at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, among them the development of tea and tobacco cultures

as well as a polygraph bringing together the efforts of the Nobel brothers, Rothschilds and Mantashevs. The museum also displays photos by famous photographer Sergey ProkudinGorsky, which portrays the life and culture of Georgia and Batumi of his time. Address: 3 Leselidze St., Batumi Open: 10:00 – 18:00 daily except Mondays Ticket: 0.50 – 2 GEL

The Mtirala National Park Batumi’s Nirvana

The Mtirala National Park stretches across a territory of 15,804 hectares, hosting eco-tourism lovers throughout all seasons of the year. Located 14 km from the Tbilisi-Batumi highway, the park is known to be the place with the highest moisture and rainfall in Georgia. The Mtirala Mountain within the park is situated between the Black Sea and the Adjaran Mountain Range – on the crossing of the Chakvistskali and Koraghistskali rivers.

40

The park zone includes an almost untouched territory covered by Kolkhetian forest, providing shelter for Kolkhetian animals and plants, amongst which are many rare and endemic examples. There are also many mineral and plain springs with healing qualities to be found there. Close to the Mountain are the remnants of fortresses and bridges from the early and late Middle Ages, the most distinguished of which include the 13th century Skhalta

Church and the fortresses of Khikhani, Gonio and Petra. The first tourist route at the Mtirala National Park starts at the visitor center in Chakvistavi village, which contains an information and exhibition space and 4 hotel rooms. The path runs along the left bank of the river Chakvistavi and as you walk you are bound to come across plants and animals included in the Red Book: Georgian walnut, Kolkhetian chestnut,

Pontic Rhododendron, brown bear (if you’re lucky…or unlucky), marten, fox, mountain eagle, buzzard, and more. Two kilometers from the visitor center there is a valley which is perfect for picnics. Don’t forget to take your trash home with you when you go! When your batteries are recharged, head back along the path 400m and turn south-west. The trail will lead you to a 12 m high waterfall surrounded by Kolkhetian willow and plush. A kilometer further on from the

waterfall, between the cliffs, runs a river which then becomes a transparent lake full to the brim with trout. Picnic, fire and camping spots can be found nearby. On the path leading from the lake to the visitor center, tourists will see remnants of an old settlement. Alongside their work protecting the territories, the park administration conducts eco-educational training – regular meetings are held with the population of

the park’s neighboring villages and with school children. At the meetings, people learn about the goals of establishing the park and its functions. Residents of nearby settlements are provided with firewood to prevent uncontrolled deforestation. Services available at the Mtirala National Park visitor center include: sleeping bag hire, rucksack and tent hire, Guide Service and car rental. Conference hall facilities are also available.

Medical Tourism in Georgia Legend has it that Caesar’s men once bathed in the hot Borjomi springs to cure themselves of their ills. Inspired to give it a try? Borjomi isn’t the only well-known and well-loved restorative health resort in Georgia. In fact the country has a plethora of age-old natural resources to relax you, soothe you and, perhaps, even cure you of your aches and pains. From the springs of Borjomi and Tskaltubo to the mud baths of Gurjaani; the pine-dusted air of the Bakuriani mountains to the volcanic sand of Ureki beach – hot dry deserts and moist humid botanical gardens, cool fresh alpine air to icy glaciers. The Soviets took advantage of everything Georgia had to offer and in the USSR’s heyday, Georgia was besieged with tourists from around the Soviet Union, eager to sample the affordable delights of the many health resorts here. After the collapse, many resorts fell into disrepair but things are slowly being turned around- with renovations and even a number of new resorts appearing on the scene. Ecotourism has never seen better potential than what Georgia has to offer!

TsKalTubo Tskaltubo, the main town of the Tskaltubo district of the Imereti province, is a spa resort in west-central Georgia, at 95-120m above sea level. Among the most famous resorts in Georgia, it is known for its 33-35°C radon-carbonate mineral springs. The waters of Tskaltubo resort are said to be able to cure the following diseases: heart-bloodvessel, locomotor system, gynecologic disorders, skin and endocrine diseases, and more. The Bath-House #6 of “Balneo Service JSC” is the largest and most modern of the choices there. Built over a spring, it offers three pools and individual bathing chambers. Mineral water flows in and out the bathing chambers constantly, meaning that the water you bathe in keeps stable physical and chemical structures and temperature.

Borjomi is well known for its mineral waters, revered for centuries for their positive healing affects on people with digestive disorders. Archaeological excavations have revealed the existence of stone baths in the area, proving that these mineral waters have been utilized by people for thousands of years. The State recently established the Borjomi-Karagauli National Park to help preserve the beautiful and unique nature of Borjomi.

nunisi First set up in 1856, Nunisi is a balneotherapeutic health resort famous for its beautiful nature and located in the south-eastern part of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, Likhi (Surami) Range, at 750m above sea level. Adjaruli in Tbilisi By Katie ruth davies Our khachapuri (baked cheese bread) recommendation this issue is the Adjaruli- a boat-shaped heavy dish (what some call an edible plate!) containing sulguni cheese, a golden egg cooked last minute before serving, and a slab of butter melting as the waiter brings it to your table. Tradition dictates you pull off the soft bread from around the edges and use it to scoop up the cheese, butter and egg. But I’ve never been in a restaurant that doesn’t have a knife and fork to hand, too. And you can ask for a lighter option without dough (“tsomgamoclili Adjaruli”) so they take out the bulk of the heavy spongy bread, meaning there’s more chance you’ll be able to eat it all! And if you can’t get to Adjara to try an Adjaruli Khachapuri in its namesake region, check out the Tbilisi restaurants below for the next best options!

MaChaKhela Machakhela is a popular brand restaurant and each branch is alike in style. I chose the one on Marjanishvili Avenue, one of my favourite shopping and strolling streets in Tbilisi. The two-floor street-front restaurant is a blend of modern and rustic: red-brick and modern floor tiles, walls decorated with Pirosmani canvas replicas and red carpets hanging over the upper balconies. Unlike many Georgian restaurants, the atmosphere was not stifling thanks to the open space and air conditioning, though smoking is permitted. The menu is vast- everything you could want from a European-Georgian menu, from breakfast til late. On an Adjaruli mission but fancying something other than egg and cheese, I was pleasantly surprised to find a huge choice of Adjaruli hachapuris: from the standard cheese-and-egg (available in small to “Titanic” and priced 7-16 GEL) to fasting olive, vegetarian, mushroom, chicken, beef, spinach, and bean- the cheapest offering at a mere 5.50 GEL. Service was pleasant, the staff spoke English and the deliciously cooked dish arrived quickly. This time round, I can recommend the spinach Adjaruli!

saKhaChapure no1 A cool, modern, bright and pleasant atmosphere but at a disadvantage to other restaurants for being underground. Smiley, friendly staff, some of whom speak English. Fast service, and the kitchen is open so you can see how it’s done! Small, medium and large Adjaruli available Price: 7.80- 14 GEL

puri guliani This is Adjaruli with a view! I happily headed to the top of the Funicular for this taster. Puri Guliani is famous for its Adjarian Khachapuri which suits the sweet Lagidze waters (a type of lemonade) also on offer here. Kids are catered for with a mini-Adjaruli Khachapuri option, as are vegetarians with a bean version. The atmosphere is fresh and modern, not unlike Sakhachapure No1, but this time you get the whole of Tbilisi spread out below you! Price: From 8.50 GEL

A Georgian Renaissance- Art-Cafes By Tim ogden Georgia’s renaissance of the mid to late 2000s has manifested itself in a number of ways. On an international level, Georgian cinema has captured the attention of European audiences at film festivals across the continent, while its wine is slowly starting to reveal itself as a challenge to French supremacy. The country has also experienced revival as a holiday destination; once the crown jewel of the Soviet tourist industry, Georgia now attracts visitors from Europe, Asia, and North America. Along with its wine, food and culture, its artwork has also captured the attention of visitors, and nowhere can Georgian art be enjoyed better than in Tbilisi’s art cafes. Grab a… Turkish Coffee By Katie ruth davies Though it can be found being sipped in abundance in offices and homes all over Georgia, Adjara has become something of a hub of fame for the thick ridiculously sweet Turkish coffee. You’ll find it on practically every street corner, its heady, warm and inviting aroma floating down many a street in Batumi, but here are our Top 3 favourite cafes to get a taste of Batumi on caffeine: RUSUDAN PETVIASHVILI ART CAFE-GALLERY Address: 7 Z. Gamsakhurdia Str.

4. When the coffee starts to sink and the water is warm enough to dissolve the sugar, stir it and then turn down the heat. Stir until the mixture starts to foam. 6. When you see bubbles forming on the surface, turn down the heat again or take the pot off the heat. 7. Stir gently. DO NOT LET IT BOIL as the mixture must be frothy- the more froth, the better it will taste! If the coffee gets too hot and begins to rise, take it off the heat or turn the heat down. Repeat this process of heating and cooling twice.

PIER BATUMI Address: Batumi Boulevard

8. Pour into your cup quickly for the foam and slowly for the thick coffee underneath. 9. Cleanse your palette with a drink of water (at which time the loose grinds will sink to the bottom of your cup), then sip away and enjoy a real taste of Adjara!

Why not try… Sand Coffee? Sand coffee is essentially the same as the Turkish Coffee described on this page, except it’s prepared more slowly by nestling the coffee pot a few inches into a bed of heated sand. The slower preparation makes Sand Coffee smoother and more flavorful. Try it.

PRIVET IZ BATUMA 39 M. Abashidze Str. OR TRY MAKING IT YOURSELF: It requires a special coffee pot- either plastic stand-alone (like a mini electric kettle) or a small metal pot for the stove-, a spoon, sugar and coffee that has been ground to a fine powder. 1. Measure the exact amount of cold water you need. 2. Place your pot of water on the stove and heat it to medium-high. The water must not boil. 3. Add about 1 tablespoon of fresh powdered coffee per demitasse cup and then add sugar to taste. Do not stir- let the coffee float on the surface until the water has warmed up.

Top 4 Snacks in Adjara By Katie ruth davies Feeling peckish? Fancy something local and different? Check out our recommendations below!

Top 4 snaCKs in adjara paKhlava Pakhlava, also known as baklava, is a rich, sweet pastry dessert made up of layers of filo (thin dough) filled with chopped walnuts, sweetened and held together with honey. There are various types of this dessert throughout central and southwest Asia but the Georgian one is definitely worth trying for its home-grown nuts and honey.

barabuli Black Sea Barabuli (red mullet), a batter-coated salty serving of the locally caught small fish, splashed with lemon juice. Most restaurants in the region serve it and you can even buy your own at the fish market and have it fried for you at certain restaurants.

Corn Boiled Corn Cobs. While sitting on the beach, keep your ears open for the cries of ‘Tsheli simindi!”- locals in big straw hats and sandals walking up and down the beach offering hot fresh corn cobs sprinkled generously with salt for 1-2 GEL. If you’re lucky, you’ll be tasting locally-grown cobs!

Heard it on the Grape Vine By aleko Tskitishvili than those in Guria, the homeland of Chkhaveri. The winemakers of Adjara who had not thought of grapes as a source of income before the success of Adjara Wine House soon started to look at their vineyards through a different lens. Based on the price, it was Chkhaveri that drew everyone’s attention most. The indigenous vine varieties of Adjara such as Satsuri, Brola, Povnili, Botomura, Shishveli, Khopaturi, Tskhenisdzudzu Adjaruli, Kharistvala Adjaruli and others still remain largely overlooked. If Adjara Wine House becomes interested in those varieties, the situation might improve there also. International donors and NGOs also contribute to the development of winemaking in Adjara. As one example, USAID gave the residents of Merisi village 1,500 saplings of Chkhaveri to be planted on landslide-prone slopes in a project implemented by the Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN). The Adjara Wine House helped by finding the right village for the project.

Grape growing and wine producing have become increasingly popular in Adjara in recent years. Five years back it was hardly imaginable that Adjarans would go back to the vineyards of their fathers and grandfathers and start developing new vineries. The change occurred when the company Adjara Wine House was founded in the region. In 2010 and 2011,

88

the company purchased the rare Chkhaveri grape vine from local people for 4 - 5 GEL per kilo. Now, the stores of Adjara Wine House are successfully selling the Chkhaveri wine of the consequent harvests under the name Porto-Franco. The Chkhaveri vineyards had been well preserved in Adjara, perhaps even better

Merisi was a powerful center of Georgian winemaking during Soviet times, however the former vineyards of the collective farms were almost totally destroyed in the following 20 years. The lands that moved into private hands were used to grow corn and vegetables which contributed to the erosion of the soil and led to landslides. The replacement of these plants with grapevines is already helping the region both ecologically and economically.

If you want to take home something really Georgian, this is the place for you!

ChubiKa My next choice is also a Georgian designer’s concept store – Chubika. This designer always manages to surprise; she has a very specific and interesting style and her shop usually houses one of my favorite collections during fashion weeks. The brand is very well known for its hats but it also has wide choice of shoes and apparel, as well as Ipad holders, bracelets, necklaces, wallets, handbags, belts, and more.

sTory If you are able to head over to beautiful Batumi City, then you’ll be really surprised by the choice of Georgian designers’ stores there. I often go to Batumi just to shop in those nice boutiques found at every step. One of my favorites is a new small store - STORY, which features a nice cluster of Georgian designers well known for their signature styles. Other than the places above, you can very easily find very unique pieces of art or old craftworks in the streets of Tbilisi, like on Shardin Str., Erekle Str. or Leselidze Str., on the Dry Bridge and embankment, and in many other hidden corners. For this and not only this, Tbilisi is a lovely city to walk around days on end- you’ll not get tired of it!

The Chaos ConCepT sTore The Chaos concept store is the latest hot place to shop in Tbilisi. Located near the famous Rooms Hotel Tbilisi, it is the perfect place to find original and exclusive small collections of various brands. If you’re after extraordinary pieces of art or garments that can reveal your soul, this very small and cozy place is just the place to pop in to!

If you are looking for a unique piece of art, jewelry or a handmade gift, then the Caucasus Nature Jewels Gallery is the place for you. We present unique art works, handmade crafts, cloisonnĂŠ enamel, jewelry and textiles collected from all over Georgia and the Caucasus. Some of our artists and craftsmen are from remote areas of the country who use traditional techniques to create their pieces. The Caucasus has a very ancient and rich craftsmanship tradition which we do our best to preserve and revive. We also offer pieces inspired by archaeological findings created by various artists. In addition to supporting local artists, Caucasus Nature Jewels contributes to preserving nature in the region by donating a percentage of revenues from every item sold to the Caucasus Nature Fund, a non-profit organization that was established to safeguard the Caucasus eco-region by protecting and strengthening the network of national parks and natural reserves in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
