Hurricanes Golfers have Another Stellar Year

The Hurricane golf team finished strong once again this season at the Peach Belt Conference Championship, having its best showing in school history as GSW finished in fourth place at the 11- team event. Matthew Whittaker earned All-Tournament honors as he led the Hurricanes with a 2-over par 218 total.

GSW’s previous top showing at the PBC Championships was a sixthplace finish obtained last spring.

With Whittaker earning All-Tourney honors, GSW has now placed an individual in the Top 3 in twoconsecutive seasons. Craig Gibson tied for third in 2012.

Seniors J.P. Griffin and Nate Gahman were also honored by the PBC. The two were named to the All-PBC First Team.

Griffin, a three-time PBC Golfer of the Week, earned his second All-Conference selection. The Glennville native has finished under par in five of his 27 rounds in 2012- 13, including a pair of 3-under 69s. Griffin was a PING All-America Third Team member last spring.

Gahman also earned his second All-Conference honor after being named to the squad in 2010- 11. The Leesburg native also earned All-Region honors after placing eighth out of108 golfers at Southeast Regional Tournament, which qualified him for the National Championship Tournament. There, he placed in the top 20 overall and was named a PING All-America Honorable Mention team member.

Southwestern rode its strong showing at the conference championships to their second straight appearance in the NCAA postseason where the ‘Canes finished in 10th place at the 20- team NCAA Division II South/ Southeast Regional.
