SOU’WESTER THE
CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE AT GSW
JIMMY CARTER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM PARTNERS WITH SOWEGA CASA
Jackson Carlstrom Staff Writer
November 1 marked the beginning of the Jimmy Carter Leadership Program’s annual winter fundraiser. Every year, the freshmen student cohort of the JCLP choose a local organization to work with in a fundraiser to support the community. For the 2021 fundraiser, the JCLP freshmen are partnering once again with Southwest Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocates (SOWEGA CASA) for the first time since 2019’s Angel Tree Toy Drive.
NOVEMBER 2021
SOWEGA CASA is an organization made up of over 100 volunteers who work to advocate for and improve the lives of children in foster care throughout Georgia.
To help SOWEGA CASA prepare for the holiday season, the JCLP freshmen student leaders have organized a toy drive. Items that are encouraged for donations include sports equipment, bicycles

& bicycle helmets, Vtech learning toys, tablets & tablet protectors, and gift cards. The toy donations received will be given to SOWEGA CASA, who will then distribute them to foster children across the state who have been hit hard by COVID and other issues in the hopes that their spirits will be raised and to make their Christmas special. Toy donations may be dropped off at the Student Success Center, Canes Central, the Marshall Student Center hallway, Wheatley Administration Building, or the CASA House.
JCLP is also accepting monetary donations through Venmo, Paypal, and Cash App, as well as partnering with local restaurants Pat’s Place, Gyro City Mediterranean Grill, and 2 Dukes BBQ & More, who donated a portion of their proceeds to the toy drive on percentage nights. Through monetary donations and other money raising events, the JCLP hit over $1000 for the toy drive. The final day for donations to be accepted is November 30, with the final opportunity being at GSW’s Hurricane Holiday Fest from 6-8 on Wheatley Lawn.

ARTIST UNITED EVENT
Cloie Davis Staff Writer
Allison Sanchez-Claudio is currently holding her senior art show exhibition, in the James Earl Carter Library Gallery on campus at Georgia Southwestern State University. The exhibition, entitled “Míralas”, which means “look at them” in Spanish, centers around Sanchez-Claudio’s Mexican heritage and celebrates both her childhood and Mexican culture, while dismantling harmful stereotypes about the Mexican community. The opening reception was held November 9th, 2021, complete with complimentary home cooked, authentic, Mexican tamales, rice, and pico de gallo for gallery viewers. Exciting, upcoming Artist United events include senior exhibitions held by Amber Moore and Josh Morgan.

GLASS BLOWING ART
GALLERY: KENDALL HODGES
Talik Hill Staff Writer
Ms. Hodges uses the glass forming method known as glass blowing to create her artwork, which includes recycling glass shards that have previously fallen on the floor from past student projects into bigger pieces, giving the art a hidden redeeming quality.
“With all of my art, my end goal is usually that people are capable of finding some connection in a color or a shape or a movement in the piece, and then they can connect that back to a memory or maybe it makes them feel a certain way but my hope is that they then turn to the viewer next to them to maybe have a conversation like ‘Oh! This reminds me of my aunt’s couch color when I was a child’ or maybe whatever it may be.”

“I go to the cafeteria at least 4 times a week, otherwise I am there every day of the week. Overall I feel like the cafeteria, ambience-wise, is a very lively and sociable place so it’s a great place to hangout and chill especially in between classes. Service-wise, while there are a few staff members that I think are very lovely, many don’t perform their jobs well. A lot of times, particularly at dinner, the staff tends to stand around and you can be waiting to be served for 5-10 minutes and no one comes over to assist you which I kind of think is rude. I have noticed within this past semester that any time after 6:45P.M. or 7:00P.M. that the cafeteria tends to run out of food and they do not make any effort to make more food even though students continue to come in, which I do feel like that is a problem to be addressed.”

“I do not eat at the dining hall very much, but when I do eat there, I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but like, it’s serviceable. I’ve never really had a bad experience at the dining hall.”
Junior English Major
“For a school cafeteria, the caf has pretty good food. The meals are diverse and healthy, and the
place is clean for the most part. The service isn’t always great during dinner- the servers start cleaning up before people have left and a lot of times they don’t seem to be interested in helping people in the grill and hibachi lines. They also teased us by putting the ice cream machine out and not setting it up. We want our ice cream machine back!”
