New GSW Alumni Association President

B en Daniel of Columbus is the newly-elected president of the GSW Alumni Association.

Assuming his duties from Americus CPA Tucker Rush, Daniel is the chairman of Commercial Mortgage Company and is the owner of Direct Marketing Concepts, Action Advertising and Mortgage Service Company of Columbus. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for Southwestern and serves as Ruling Elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Columbus.

Southwestern, and he would like to see more alumni involved with the college in some way. "There are many

ways each of you can help the College and the Alumni Association. Volunteer to help with the phonathon, host an alumni event in your area, help with recruiting efforts, and any other opportunity you may see," Daniel states.

As president of the National Alumni Association, Daniel will be involved with commencement exercises, alumni board meetings, area council meetings, and fundraising efforts.

Daniel is a 1958 Southwestern accounting graduate and a 1960 graduate from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He and Shirley, his wife, reside in Columbus.

Griffin Bell Named Outstanding Alumnus

Aiinternational figure in the field of law, Griffin B. Bell, former U.S. Attorney General in the administration of former President Jimmy Carter, was chosen as the Outstanding Georgia Southwestern College Alumnus for 1993.

The announcement by alumnus Fred Overby, prominent Columbus, Georgia attorney, was a highlight of June graduation exercises at which Bell, of Atlanta, also served as the commencement speaker.

The appearance of Bell, an Americus native, helped bring out more than 2,000 persons, the largest number of persons ever to attend a Georgia Southwestern graduation program, President William H. Capitan said. A record number of 297 candidates received diplomas, marking another special significance in GSW achievements.

In his acceptance remarks, Judge Bell expressed deep appreciation for the honor bestowed on him saying that "it is very special when you are honored by a college that you attended as a young boy in your own hometown."

For Mr. Overby - a member of one of the nation's most recognized law firms and a member of the Board of Directors of the Southwestern Alumni Association - introducing Judge Bell for the top alumni award was a "special delight."

Attorney Overby, formerly of Richland, said that he held highest respect for Bell and that

the judge had been instrumental in having him certified to be able to practice before the Supreme Court. Mr. Overby also cited Judge Bell's book, Taking Care of the Law, written while he was attorney general, as being especially helpful to Overby personally.

"Judge Bell has spent

his entire career life in problem-solving on every level, including internationally, and it is most admirable that he has been able to help guide so many persons, such as myself, in the legal field," said Overby, who was chairman of the selection committee for the Leewynn Finklea Outstanding Alumni Award.

President Capitan echoed the committee's choice of Judge Bell as recipient of the award of excellence from Georgia Southwestern College's National Alumni Association, saying: "Judge Griffin Bell's great service to his home community, as well as his state and nation, is certainly a wellknown matter of record. We at Georgia Southwestern College are very proud of him, and it is with great pleasure to everyone, I know, that the school's alumni members chose him for the 1993 award of excellence."

Judge Bell, a graduate of Americus High School, received his law degree from Mercer University law school cum laude in 1948 and practiced law in Savannah and Rome before joining the prestigious law firm of King & Spalding in Atlanta. Previously, he served in the

U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-46, being discharged with the rank of major. He served as President John F. Kennedy's Georgia Election Campaign Chairman in Kennedy's successful 1960 presidential drive. The result was the largest victory margin ever by a Democratic presidential nominee in Georgia voting history. A year later, President Kennedy appointed Bell to the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, based in New Orleans. He was then nominated as the 72nd U.S. Attorney General by President Carter, who also attended Southwestern, as did former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Since stepping down as attorney general in August 1979 and returning to his same Atlanta law firm, Judge Bell has continued to make an outstanding record in his state, nation, and also in world developments. During 1980 he headed the American delegation to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, which was conducted in Madrid.

Judge Griffin Bell '36 is shown receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award from Fred Overby, member of Southwestern alumni board of directors.

Business and Baseball Prime Interests of 1995 Teacher of Excellence

T he 1993 Georgia Southwestern College Teacher of Excellence is as much at home on the baseball diamond as she is in the classroom.

Dr. Liz Wilson, assistant professor, Division of Business Administration, who was selected by graduating seniors, alumni, and a special committee, received the prestigious award at recent commencement exercises.

The 297 candidates for graduation marked the largest graduating class in the 87year-old school's history, as well as the biggest attendance, more than 2,000. Former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell was the commencement speaker.

Ben Daniel, Columbus, president of the GSW Alumni Association, made the presentation of the special alumni award and a $500 check to Dr. Wilson.

"I was stunned when I heard my name called," the University of Alabama graduate declared in an interview. "I never even considered that I might be honored because I am just completing my third year at Georgia Southwestern. It really meant a very great deal to me

because I knew that it came from my students. It was very touching."

Asked what she liked most outside the business administra-

tion classes she teaches, Dr. Wilson quickly replied, "Baseball, of course." Elaborating, the Alabama native said she had not only played the sport, but coached and umpired as well. "I became Little League umpire, and this helped a long way in working my way through college and to have a little extra money." She once coached a successful team of 10 and 11-year-olds in the

Dixie Youth Baseball League. Dr. Wilson moved to Albany in late 1985 and continues to make her home in Albany, commuting daily to Americus. She joined the faculty of GSW in 1990 after having served for four years as executive director of the Southwest Georgia Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center in Albany. Prior to that, she taught from 1982-1985 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Wilson earned her B.A. degree in speech pathology/psychology in 1973, also her master's in audiology a year later, both from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Her doctorate in administrationhealth services was awarded from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1985. She has done professional management consulting, presented her research in education aspects, given a special paper before the Georgia Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, and authored a number of special articles related to organizational behavior modification, personnel evaluation, and other topics.
