The University of Georgia (UGA) was founded in 1785 as the first statechartered university in the United States. The university's history is marked by its public service tradition, its role in the Civil War, and its growth as a land-grant institution.
Founding
The Georgia General Assembly established UGA in 1785. Abraham Baldwin wrote the charter and was the first president, but resigned before the school opened. He was succeeded by Josiah Meigs. The University first began to thrive under Moses Waddel, who became president in 1819. Alonzo Church was president in 18291859.
The school was originally called Franklin College, named after Benjamin Franklin. The campus was built in 1801, and the original area is now North Campus.
Civil War
The university closed in 1864 due to the Civil War. Campus buildings were used by Confederate soldiers, Union prisoners, and civilian refugees.
The university reopened in January 1866.
Land-grant institution
In 1872, the Morrill Act made UGA a land-grant institution. This meant that the university was required to use its resources to benefit the state's citizens.
Public service
UGA's public service tradition has been a fundamental part of the university's mission since its founding.

1. Goat: The goat appeared at Georgia's first football game: February 22, 1892, against Auburn. He wore a black coat with the letters, U G on the sides.
2. Bull Terrier: Her name was Trilby, and it was her presence and that of her 13 puppies at practices and games that started the University's nickname. She was a solid white Bull Terrier.
