HIGHEST FUNDRAISING TEAM FOR 2021
Advertisement
On Saturday 27 March the Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Relay for Life Team attended this year’s Relay at the Busselton foreshore organised by GMAS teacher Jacinta Busher. 2021 was a shortened and modified event (due to COVID restrictions) but the team were feeling incredibly lucky and happy to be attending the event, given that last years was cancelled.
The Team spent the day walking laps (representing the forward march of Cancer as well as Cancer Research) with the aweinspiring Drew West from Year 8 walking 74 laps for the team! The crew also sold pot plants, beach gear, homemade jams and chutneys, hand-knitted beanies, freshly baked muffins and anything else they could think of to add to the overall donations to the Cancer Council.
Team GMAS raised a mammoth $4037.53

for the 2021 Relay for Life
GMAS parent, Mrs Joanna Stephenson, won the ‘Miss Relay’ 2021 competition “strutting her stuff up on the stage and racing throughout Busselton rattling her donation tin” Jacinta said.

Jacinta mentioned that the Yellow Submarine ‘Box Car’ was a great photo opportunity for the kids but alas the wheels fell off (literally) when it was raced. ”Valiantly operated by four students and Mrs Forrest (who knobble the Wood N Leg’s Team with a bump worthy of a GWS player) it had to be carried in second last” Jacinta laughed.
The crew was exhausted but then totally thrilled when it was announced that GMAS was the highest Fundraising Team for 2021! Presented with a framed certificate up on stage Jacinta said “it was wonderful to know that we had contributed to the best of our abilities under somewhat trialling circumstances”.
A huge thank you to all the team members who walked and helped on the day: Drew and Chase West (and Family), Sandie McCombie, Alex Franklin, Ava Marchant, Lacey Heys, Joanna Stephenson, Mrs Forrest, Mrs Ness, Erinlea Forrest, Miss Stefanou, Miss Fink, Miss Uchanski, ex staff member Mrs Mewett and ex-student Ashlynn Forrest.
A particular mention must go to Lacey Heys and Ava Marchant both in Year 7 who individually raised between them $584.00. Amazing effort girls, just amazing!

NOT JUST A HAIRCUT

STRONG EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Joel Hargreaves (Year 8) is well known for his signature locks, which he was happy to lose for a great cause. Cheered on by students and staff, Joel honoured his promise and shaved his head. An amazing $2,367 was raised for Varity. Sitting next to Joel on the day was courageous Kelsi McKenna (Year 7). Kelsi had 11 inches of her hair cut off and raised $763.75 for the World’s Greatest Shave, $200 over her goal amount!

FREE DRESS DAY FOR A CAUSE
Community and staff rallied around GMAS Librarian Mrs Snee as she also took to the stage for the big shave. A nervous Mrs Campbell volunteered to assist. Mrs Snee was very brave and all money raised went to her chosen charity, National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Out and About
BUDDING CODERS, GAMERS AND YOUTUBERS Code Camp was back again at GMAS for the Term 1 school holidays.
The end result = smiles and feelings of accomplishment. Our future superstars challenged themselves to make their own YouTube videos, build their own computer games via coding and most of all have fun with fellow students.

SHARING ABORIGINAL CULTURE WITH THE NEXT GENERATION Our Year 1 classes enjoyed a visit from Mr Josh Whiteland and Koomal Dreaming on Friday 26 March.
Josh taught the students about the traditional lifestyles of the Wadandi people, the Aboriginal seasons, plants, animals and the landscape. There was a traditional fire lighting demonstration, artefact and tool display. The favourite though was the didgeridoo music sessions, where the students played instruments and merged into emus and kangaroos.

INDIGENOUS GARDEN PROJECT During Term 1 holidays, Adam, our Senior Maintenance and Grounds Officer, has been hard at work creating and building the Schools Indigenous Garden.
The garden will allow our students to explore aboriginal culture through bush tucker plants and trees, learn about the cultural significance of the local indigenous people and their tie to the land.
Students from the GMAS Creative Club will be designing the artwork along the fence and taking centre stage will be the 2020 Year 12 gift - an indigenous themed totem pole. The garden will be located at the back of the school near the tennis
courts.
