STEELCASE NEXT

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The design for NEXT, a Chicago based advertising agency, draws inspiration from the dynamic energy of an URBAN MARKETPLACE.

This concept shapes the layout, materiality, and zoning decisions. The design prioritizes a vibrant, flexible environment to foster well-being, productivity, and collaboration. The use of industrial materials, various textures, and natural finishes reflects the design concept. Just like a marketplace thrives on fluid interactions, the office is envisioned as a hub where creativity and innovation grow through open communication and shared spaces.

CLIENT INFORMATION

NEXT is an independent global creative advertising agency headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and soon, CHICAGO . Focused on innovating at the intersection of advertising, digital, and brand strategy, NEXT harnesses the power of creativity to drive cultural change and inspire growth for brands.

NEXT represents four key clients: Alohas | Olipop | Cava | Elate Beauty

811 W Fulton Market Chicago, IL

811 W Fulton, located in the heart of the Fulton Market District, sits in a neighborhood that seamlessly blends historic industrial charm with modern development. Once a meatpacking hub, the district has transformed into a trendy area with upscale restaurants, tech offices, art galleries, and frequent street markets celebrating local food and culture. This vibrant mix makes Fulton Market a dynamic and sought-after urban destination.

Layout was driven by the design concept, dividing each team into its own “market stall” incorporating color blocking based on client themes. Enclosed zones are centrally focused surrounded by open “consumer” areas. This centralization of enclosed spaces allows for maximum natural light distribution, enhancing the overall workspace environment.

WORK CAFE

STAIR

The monumental stair serves as a multi-functional feature, offering bleacher-style seating for office-wide meetings and a dynamic space for lunch-and-learns, while its underside creates a breakout area ideal for pin-ups and collaborative discussions. Complementing this, the front-facing work café provides a relaxed space for employees to step away from private work zones and invites clients into a welcoming, public atmosphere. Together, these spaces blend social interaction, collaboration, and functionality

WORKSTATIONS

Workstations are strategically positioned around dedicated team rooms and huddle spaces to enhance intentional collaboration. Acoustic felt panels are used for color blocking, distinguishing client team “stalls” with client-specific colors for both visual identity and sound absorption.

The 7th-floor lounge offers a space for teams to relax and interact, promoting cross-team socialization. With operable curtain panels, the area can be easily opened for a shared atmosphere or closed off to create a more private, focused zone.

RIPARIAN HALL

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Water has always had a way of bringing people together, and throughout history, communities have formed around rivers. Richmond, VCU, and the James River are no exception. The Riparian, named for its connection to riverbanks, embraces this tradition by fostering a shared identity among students—one that is resilient, dynamic, and boundless. Riparian Hall serves as a sanctuary from the hustle of daily life and academic demands. It offers students a peaceful retreat, fostering spaces for socialization, connection, and relaxation. Designed to support mental and physical well-being, it creates an environment where students can thrive.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

During my internship at Baskervill, I collaborated with a team of interns on a hypothetical project to design a new dorm building for VCU. We developed a conceptual design that addressed the university’s needs, focusing on space planning, sustainability, and functionality.

700 W Grace Street

Richmond, VA

Virginia Commonwealth University is a public university spread across two downtown campuses in Richmond, VA. The Monroe Park campus, located in an urban setting, features a blend of historic and modern buildings that accommodate a wide range of programs, research initiatives, staff, faculty and students.

ENLARGED LOBBY FLOOR PLAN

The space in the design was divided with a central focus on the “Waterfall,” a communal area that serves as the heart of the building. Surrounding this central feature, wings were created for private areas, allowing for a balance of communal interaction and personal space. The layout ensures that all functions of the building flow toward the Waterfall, fostering connection and collaboration while maintaining privacy in designated zones.

SINGLE UNIT RESTROOM

The new VCU multi-use dorm uses a color palette that creates cohesion between nature and academics. The warm natural hues of the chosen color palette aim to foster a sense of home and comfort while also providing an energetic atmosphere. Inspired elements and tones were drawn from the natural and withstanding environment around Richmond. The natural sediment that floats through the James River and the historic homes that live in The Fan contributed to the array of colors, materials, and textures used within the new VCU spaces.

The Riparian lobby serves as a welcoming center where students can check in, collect mail, and relax in a comfortable lounge setting. Distinct seating zones are highlighted by shifts in flooring materials, designed to mimic the organic flow of a river stream. This thoughtful design creates a dynamic yet inviting space that reflects the building’s connection to the James River.

LOBBY

The dining area in The Riparian offers a balance of semi-enclosed seating for privacy and open seating arrangements for larger social gatherings. This flexible design accommodates both intimate meals and vibrant group interactions, fostering community and connection.

03 BINDELLA

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The altered design of the existing space will be a reflection of the morals and ethics of Bindella’s culture. The connections between Italian culture, wine, and people will be based on the concept of the grapevine. The idea of the grapevine as a connecting force will be inspiring the flow and layout of the space. Specific zones and material choices will be intentionally thought out to represent the heart of Bindella and allow for social enjoyment, private tasting, and the ability to embrace Italian traditions.

CLIENT PROFILE

Bindella - Tenuta Vallocaia, a high-end Italian winery, is represented by clients Maria Bettina Cerullo and Giovanni Capuano. With a philosophy rooted in maintaining a friendly, respectful, and peaceful environment, Bindella prioritizes creating a guest experience that reflects their motto, “terre, vite, vita”—“land, vine, life.” Their goal is to expand to 1700 W. Main Street in Richmond, VA, by opening a sensory enoteca focused on the wine-tasting experience while aligning with the established Bindella brand and its values.

1700 W Main Street

Richmond, VA

1700 W Main Street, located in Richmond’s historic Fan District, offers an ideal setting for the Bindella project. The area is known for its tree-lined streets, classic architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, with restaurants, art galleries, and businesses nearby. This dynamic location provides a unique opportunity to enhance the wine-tasting experience in a neighborhood that blends history with contemporary charm.

The layout of the Bindella project is inspired by the concept of a grapevine as a connecting force, carefully balancing public and private areas. Considerations such as avoiding direct sunlight for wine storage and display areas ensure optimal conditions, while the flow of the space encourages seamless movement and interaction.

MINDFULNESS

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The project site has undergone an intentional evolution in three key stages of curation, encompassing decontextualization, abstraction in both 2D and 3D, and the application of functional purpose. The space responds to the needs of the mind and body, allowing for productivity and tranquility. Within the site there will be provided areas for contemplation, nourishment, and collaboration. The design prioritizes a relationship with natural features, materials, and light.

PROCESS

Phase One: Decontextualization

This phase focused on stripping the site down to its essential features and forms, providing a blank canvas.

Phase Two: Abstraction

Abstraction in 2D and 3D introduced visual interest while still keeping an open, calming simplicity.

Phase Three: Functionality

Bringing in functional elements overlaid purpose onto various areas such as, spaces for contemplation that were balanced by social areas. Additionally bright, airy gathering spots that contrast quiet niches within the site.

26 N Morris St Richmond, VA

26 N Morris St is located in Richmond’s historic Fan District, known for its architectural charm and lively community. The site sits next to a triangle park, creating a direct connection to nature and offering a tranquil escape within the urban environment. This proximity to the park enhances the site’s character, blending greenery with the energy of the surrounding neighborhood.

The design is organized into distinct zones that embody the ideas of contemplation, collaboration, and rejuvenation, creating spaces that cater to both individual reflection and community engagement.

05 PROMISES

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Promises was inspired by symbols in the Bible that each represent a specific promise from God. The Olive Branch symbolizes global peace post the great flood, while the Cross and The Trinity signify parallel promises of eternal life, love, and truth. Through the recurrent use of these motifs, the ideas of steadfastness and dependability are emphasized.
