Coach & Player Interviews
The Bulldogs generally practice beginning at 2 p.m. on weekdays. The best time to interview head coach Kelley Hester or any golfer is usually immediately before practice. Class schedules of players may alter their availability on any given day. The team typically conducts practice sessions at the Boyd Golf Center; however, the location may vary to other Athens-area courses. To ensure interview requests are addressed expeditiously, please contact the UGA Sports Communications office at least 24 hours in advance of your deadline.
Liz Murphey Collegiate Credentials
The 40th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic will be contested on March 30-April 1, 2012, at the UGA Golf Course. Media and photographers wishing to cover the event should request credentials through SID Mike Mobley. Use of flashes is prohibited and photographers should allow a comfortable distance as to not inhibit a golfer’s play, generally a minimum of 15-20 yards.
Directions to the UGA Golf Course
• From the Athens Bypass (Ga. Highway 10) take the Milledge Avenue exit. If traveling from the east side of Athens, take a left at the bottom of the ramp (and proceed underneath the bypass). If traveling from the West, take a right at the bottom of the ramp (going away from the bypass). • Travel approximately one-half mile on Milledge and make the first left onto Riverbend Parkway. (If you reach the Georgia soccer/ softball complex on your right, you’ve gone too far.) • Proceed approximately one-half mile and make a right into the entrance to the UGA course. • Follow the road past the driving range (on your left) and into the large parking lot. The Boyd Center is located closest to the front left corner of the parking lot, while the clubhouse for the UGA Golf Course is located closest to the lot’s front right corner.

The SEC placed six schools in the top 25 of the final 2010-11 Director’s Cup rankings, including Florida (4th), LSU (19th), Georgia (20th), Tennessee (22nd), Arkansas (24th) and Alabama (25th). In addition to the four team national championships last year, 39SEC student-athletes garnered individual national titles, while 367 individuals earned firstteam All-America honors. Student-athletes around the conference continued to excel in the classroom as well with 43 securing spots on Captial One/CoSIDA Academic All-America squads, the most of any

conference in the nation. Additionally, more than 2,300 earned recognition on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Such standards have become commonplace within one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences. SEC schools began athletic competition with one another over 100 years ago as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Seven institutions (Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Sewanee and Vanderbilt) attended the SIAA organizational meeting in Atlanta on Dec. 22, 1894. At the Southern Conference meetings on Dec. 8-9, 1932, the 13 members of the league located west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the Southeastern Conference. Ten of those institutions still remain members today. In 1990, Arkansas and South Carolina became the first schools added to the league in SEC history, joining 10 remaining charter members – Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The Razorbacks and Gamecocks were fully incorporated into league competition in 1992 after participating in SEC championships for sports except football in 1991-92. The SEC then introduced the nation’s first Division I football championship game in 1992.

Liz Murphey Tribute A true pioneer in women’s athletics
Liz Murphey was one of the leading figures in the evolution and development of women’s intercollegiate athletics both on the national level and at the University of Georgia. A Newnan, Ga., native, Murphey was not only an outstanding women’s golf coach but also led the overall Lady Bulldog women’s sports program to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as its senior woman administrator. She died November 23, 2005, following a short illness. “Liz was certainly one of the national pioneers in women’s athletics and one that provided the real foundation for the program here at Georgia,” said former UGA Director of Athletics Vince Dooley. “Her work at Georgia was recognized across the country both as an administrator and golf coach.” Murphey joined the university faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of physical education and women’s golf coach. She coordinated the women’s club sports program until being named assistant athletic director for women’s sports in 1978. When UGA officially added women’s golf as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1978, Murphey already had a solid foundation in place. She led the Lady Bulldogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles from 1978-86.
Under Murphey, Georgia finished in the top 10 at each national championship from 1979-83, including second at the 1981 AIAWs and third at the 1983 NCAAs. Additionally, Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer won individual national titles in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Murphey was the first-ever NGCA National Coach of the Year in 1984, and she was a charter member of that organization’s Hall of Fame. Two of her most prestigious honors were the 1996 Rolex Meritorious Service Award for her contributions to collegiate golf and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Adminstators in 2003. Under her leadership, Georgia won eight of the 14 SEC women’s all-sports awards, secured four national team championships and captured an additional 31 individual national titles. Murphey retired from the University in May 1996. She was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association’s Circle of Honor – the school’s highest tribute paid to former athletes or coaches – in 2001. Her legacy lives on each spring. For more than three decades, Georgia has hosted the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, appropriately one of the nation’s oldest women’s collegiate athletic events in any sport.
Liz’s Legacy
Liz Murphey’s fingerprints are still very much a part of UGA women’s athletics. Murphey hired current UGA women’s head coaches Jack Bauerle (swimming and diving), Andy Landers (basketball) and Jeff Wallace (tennis), as well as the recently retired Suzanne Yoculan (gymnastics). That quartet has combined to lead 16 teams to NCAA Championships and 41 squads to SEC Championships in their respective sports. She also brought in Beans Kelly as her assistant coach in 1986 and handed the reins to the golf program over shortly thereafter. Kelly led Georgia to eight SEC titles and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs.

5th season at the University of Georgia ◊ Past President of the National Golf Coaches Association ◊ Georgia ’95 After spending the first six-plus years of her career as a collegiate head coach trying to put programs on the map, Kelley Hester accepted a decidedly different challenge on June 6, 2007, when she was introduced as the head coach at the University of Georgia. In returning to her alma mater, Hester was charged with furthering the status of a traditional national powerhouse. “I teed it up for the first time as a Bulldog in 1992, and I think I knew then that I wanted to be a coach and ultimately coach here,” Hester said when hired. Hester’s results prior to returning to Athens proved that Georgia Golf couldn’t be in better hands. In six seasons at UNLV and Arkansas, she quickly lifted those programs to heights previously thought improbable, if not impossible. The responsibility Hester feels in guiding Georgia Golf goes much deeper than that of your traditional coach. Hester watched Liz Murphey, Beans Kelly and others work tirelessly to make Athens a shining star in the women’s college golf universe. In Hester’s mind, those individuals made Georgia Golf a special entity unlike any other and playing for the Bulldogs should be an experience – both on and off the course – like no other. “It’s hard for me to put into words how much this opportunity means to me,” Hester said. “The University of Georgia has given me so much. In my mind, there’s nothing better than being a Bulldog.”

ence continued. The team she put together earned a bid to the 2004 NCAAs where Sunny Oh, a Hester signee, won the 2004 West Regional and then finished 11th individually at the NCAAs. Hester then ventured to her SEC roots and had a similar effect on at Arkansas. The Lady Razorbacks won two team titles, produced one medalist and made one NCAA Regional appearance in their first seven seasons of existence. Hester led Arkansas to a pair of fall victories in her initial season, a campaign that culminated with the Lady Razorbacks securing the first of five straight Regional bids. Arkansas advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time ever in 2005 and posted its first top-10 effort a year later. The following spring, Stacy Lewis won the 2007 NCAA individual title. Weeks later, Hester was announced as just the fourth head coach in the history of Georgia women’s golf.

Jeff Hull, a former All-American at South Carolina, was named assistant women’s golf coach at Georgia in August 2011. Hull, who was the Gamecocks’ career stroke average record holder when he completed his career in 1989, has more than two decades of experience in various aspects of golf management. Hull is a Class A PGA member and also an accomplished professional golfer, highlighted by victories at the 2004 Georgia PGA Championship, the 2007 Georgia Open and the 2008 Georgia PGA Players Championships. He was named Georgia PGA Player of the Year in 2007, the same year he was the Georgia PGA low stroke average award. “Jeff has a distinctive skill set that is rare among coaches,” Kelley Hester said. “His expertise in the technical areas of club fitting and teaching, compounded by his course management skills and tournament preparation, will make him a great addition to our staff here at UGA. Jeff has established a solid reputation as a top teacher, player and PGA member throughout Georgia and the southeast.” At South Carolina, Hull compiled a 73.68 stroke average over 82 rounds played from 1985-89. He placed 13th individually at the 1988 NCAA Championships to lead the Gamecocks to an eighth-place showing in the team field. That result still stands as the best in the program’s history. South Carolina then finished 18th at the 1989 NCAAs during Hull’s senior season.

Dominating the SEC in Beans’ “Glory Days”
Shauna Estes and Reilley Rankin were the driving forces behind teams which won an unprecedented trio of three straight SEC Championships between 1997-99. In 1997, Estes became the first player ever to claim the league’s “Triple Crown” – earning SEC Player and Freshman of the Year accolades and medalist honors at the SEC Championships. A year later, Beans Kelly was tabbed National Coach of the Year and Rankin repeated Estes’ “Triple Crown” effort.
In 1986, Beans Kelly, a member of Bulldog teams that finished fourth and third at the 1982 and 1983 national championships, respectively, took the reins from her mentor and continued to build upon the foundation Liz Murphey established. During Beans’ tenure from 1986-2000, Georgia collected seven SEC Championships, five SEC individual crowns and five top-10 NCAA finishes. Todd McCorkle assumed the helm in 2000 and delivered the program’s first-ever team national title the following spring. Liz Murphey (1978-86) Liz Murphey, a leader in the evolution of women’s intercollegiate athletics, had been at the University of Georgia for a decade when the school named women’s golf an intercollegiate sport. She led Georgia top-10 finishes at each national championship from 1979-83 and coached Terri Moody and Cindy Schreyer to individual national titles. Murphey also served as SWA for 18 years and guided UGA women’s athletics to six SEC All-Sports titles from 1984-94.
Beans Kelly (1986-00)
Never labeled predictable, Beans Kelly resigned as UGA’s head coach in 2000 while seemingly on top of the golf world. Under her tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs won 43 team and 33 individual titles, including Vicki Goetze’s 1992 NCAA title; captured seven SEC Championships; and posted eight NCAA top-10 finishes. She was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and in 2000 became the youngest coach inducted into the NGCA Hall of Fame.
Todd McCorkle (2000-07) Todd McCorkle arrived in Athens in 2000 just months after leading Arizona to the national championship. The next spring, McCorkle coached Georgia to the program’s first-ever women’s golf team NCAA title and became just the second coach in Division I history to win backto-back NCAA championships at two schools. McCorkle also led the Bulldogs to two SEC titles and seven of his Bulldog golfers combined to earn 11 All-America certificates.
1oo Percent Club includes eight UGA greats
One of the most elite associations with Bulldog golf is the “100 Percent Club.” To qualify, a player must represent Georgia at every event in her four-year career. This feat has only been accomplished by eight golfers in the program’s history. As one would expect, the list features some of the Bulldogs’ best golfers ever, including (chronologically): • Cindy Pleger, individual runner-up at the 1982 AIAWs; • Tina Paternostro, 1991 NCAA Long Driving Champion;

Terri Moody moved atop the leaderboard midway through the second round of the 1981 AIAW National Championships at the UGA Golf Course and held off a late charge from Miami’s Patti Rizzo to win Georgia’s first-ever individual national title by a female student-athlete in any sport. Moody was among a group of five golfers tied for second following an opening-round 73, but grabbed a one-stroke lead over Rizzo with a 72 on her second loop. Moody, an Athens native who was the first female student-athlete to receive a full athletic scholarship from UGA, maintained that advantage when she and Rizzo Terri Moody both carded third-round 75s. 1981 AIAW Medalist On the final day, Rizzo’s 75 knotted the score and forced a three-hole playoff. Moody completed the trio of holes at 1-under while Rizzo was 1-over.
1984
Cindy Schreyer claimed a dramatic win at the 1984 NCAA Championships, winning a threehole playoff with SMU’s Martha Foyer and Miami’s Michele Bertroitti with a birdie at No. 12. Schreyer had battled Arizona State’s Heather Farr through most of the tournament. Farr carded an opening-round score of 71 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Schreyer, who was among seven golfers tied for eighth after the first day, rebounded to break the course record and knot herself with Farr on the leaderboard with a second-round 70. Cindy Schreyer Farr regained a one-shot lead 1984 NCAA Medalist following the third round. While Schreyer shot 76 in the final round, Foyer and Berteotti carded 75s to force the playoff. Farr slipped to fourth with a 79, two strokes off the playoff-forcing score of 297.
1992
Vicki Goetze turned in one of the most impressive single rounds in the history of women’s collegiate golf en route to capturing top individual honors at the 1992 NCAA Championships on Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course. Goetze and Stanford’s Audrey Wooding led following first-round, 3-under 69s; however, Annika Sorenstam of Arizona grabbed a three-shot advantage with a second-round 68. Sorenstam maintained that same margin after both she and Goetze shot 72s on the third day. Goetze then torched the course with a 7-under 65 on the fourth day to top Sorenstam by three. Vicki Goetze Goetze’s effort still remains as 1992 NCAA Medalist both the low single-round score in NCAA Championships history (though four other golfers have equaled the mark) and the Bulldogs’ low loop all time as well.

The 2001 Bulldogs utilized three days of consistent golf to place themselves in contention and then used a spectacular final-round effort to win UGA’s first-ever national title in women’s golf. Georgia shot 298 and was among three teams tied for fourth after the opening day but climbed to sole possession of third after a second-round 295. The Bulldogs improved to 293 in the third round but still trailed top-ranked Duke by four entering the final 18 holes. Georgia seized contol early in the fourth round, tying the Blue Devils by No. 5 and then surging to a three-shot lead at No. 6. Duke never got closer than two shots thereafter. Georgia clinched the title with steely resolve. After a trio of bogeys at No. 16, UGA played the par-5 No. 17 at 3-under to all but seal the national title. The Bulldogs’ fourth-round score of 290 was six shots better than any other team in the field, as Reilley Rankin and Summer Sirmons carded a pair of 72s, while Laura Henderson and Angela Jerman both shot 73. All four of those Bulldogs finished among the top 18 individuals, with Rankin tying for 10th at 292, Henderson and Jerman both tying for 13th at 294 and Sirmons tied for 18th at 296.
