GROWING GEORGE WALTON ACADEMY UP

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Bulldog Family,

As I started working on this issue of The Bulldog, I began to reflect on my son Owen’s thirteen years at GWA. I am strong in my resolve that George Walton Academy was the best place for our family. I know that Owen is fully prepared to start college. While he was here, he made lifelong friends, found things to get involved in, took classes that challenged him and I watched him grow up here. I always felt safe knowing that he was surrounded by teachers that not only encouraged him, but cared about him and inspired him. I am looking forward to seeing Oliver finish out the next six years at George Walton Academy and experience all of the improvements that are yet to come.

From the Gala initiative to “elevate the campus,” to our newly energized faculty and exciting improvements to programs offered, things are looking up! I am thankful for this school that is rooted in tradition, but always moving forward into the future. I am grateful that my children can call GWA home, but I am also thankful to have found my own home here. George Walton Academy is so much more than a school and truly an investment in our future.

GEORGE WALTON ACADEMY

George Walton Academy provides challenging instruction, engaging experiences, and global perspectives designed to inspire lives of intellectual curiosity, integrity, and purpose.

OUR mission WE believe...

• In Judeo-Christian values while respecting the heritage and beliefs of others.

• In fostering a welcoming and inclusive community where students feel safe to discover and explore their interests and talents.

• Each student is an individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual gifts and abilities.

• Education should be relevant, engaging, and designed to equip each student to excel in college and beyond.

• In fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, imagination, and creativity.

• That promoting positive relationships and mutual respect is a responsibility of every individual.

• Students should be accountable, learn to selfadvocate, and take personal responsibility for their work, actions, and educational development.

Rising on the Shoulders of Giants

Dear GWA Family,

Our school has come a long way in a little more than half a century. From humble beginnings in Good Hope, GWA today offers thriving academic, arts, athletic, international travel, and learning support programs that build upon the vision of its founders and early headmasters. These first families (the so-called “Dirty Dozen,” who rolled up their sleeves to build the campus) would beam to see the rapid progress during the past twelve months...

The new middle school gym, The Betty and George J. Hearn, Ill Center, (affectionately nicknamed “The George” for one of our school founders, George Hearn) was dedicated on Jan. 31.

“THE GEORGE”

The new middle school gym, The Betty and George J. Hearn, Ill Center, (affectionately nicknamed “The George” for one of our school founders, George Hearn) was dedicated on Jan. 31. Additionally, the courtyard area is named the O’Lenick Courtyard for the O’Lenick family. The new gym and athletic facility gives our students a brandnew space on campus where they will continue to develop new interests, explore their passions, strengthen their abilities, build character and be challenged to GO BEYOND. The gym provides extra space for middle school gym classes, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, and cheer. It has also already proved useful in the administration of standardized testing, middle school yearbook distribution and group photos. Thank you to all the donors who contributed to the Go Beyond Campaign as we bring this exciting phase of our initiative to fruition.

“Our campus has served students well for half a century, and it is tired. Family relationships and school traditions will last a lifetime, but our campus will not, unless we take care of it.” - John D. Marshall

As we look ahead, we embrace the traditions and core values of the past 55 years that define us, while we will prepare our campus for the next half century.

GWA is rising … on the shoulders of giants.

Go Bulldogs!

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

The 2024 Lucky Dawg Gala raised more than $165,000 for campus infrastructure, including new pavement and underground piping, concessions, and bathrooms, and expanded technology and WIFIaccess. Campus infrastructure work will continue next summer!

THE LEARNING & WRITING CENTER

With the help of a fresh coat of summer paint from Mr. David, the former “Commons” has been converted into a Learning Center and classroom. Adjacent to the PARC (Place for Academic Reinforcement and Coaching), this space supports both academically gifted students and remedial learning.

MORE ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENTS

Thanks to fundraising efforts of The Champions Club (our new athletic boosters), the softball and football fields received a facelift, and a new film room and wrestling mats are in the works in the George. This second gym is a world class addition to our impressive athletic complex.

Senior Events

The GWA Class of 2024 made the most of their Senior Year which kicked off with a BBQ and retreat! They fully embraced the purpose of their time together and welcomed each opportunity to learn and grow.

The monthly lower school Pup Rallies are a time for the whole lower school to meet together in fellowship to discuss the three R’s – responsible, respectful, and ready. These key attributes are recognized by our “specials” teachers, and students earn points for their behavior and participation over the month. During the Pup Rally, the winner for each special is drawn from the classes with the highest number of Paw Points and each winning class receives a trophy and a special activity for their class.

Last year, the pup rallies welcomed the cheerleaders, twirlers, band, the Easter Bunny and other guests. During the last Pup Rally of the year, the fifth graders recognized faculty and staff that were important to them during their lower school years.

LOWER SCHOOL ART TEACHER REBECCA GOOD BRINGS HER LOVE OF ART AND TALENTS TO GWA

In her fifth year of teaching, our new lower school art teacher, Rebecca Good, has found her home at George Walton Academy. Good’s grandmother was a potter so she grew up eating dinner off of her plates and having coffee in her mugs. This every day connection to her grandmother’s art had a profound effect on her.

“I always thought that was really cool to be able to make something that’s not just pretty, but something you could use and something that’s functional,” Good said.

She took pottery and ceramics classes in high school and then at the University of North Georgia she majored in art education, with a minor in ceramics as a concentration.

320 CLAY PIECES created in lower school art

Good loves teaching kids to make things out of clay and she makes and sells her own art in her free time which you can find on Instagram @the.good.potter.

“I think it’s a cool thing to get to teach the kids that I can make art and I can sell it. I think sometimes they don’t realize that you can. It can actually be a career and you can make money off of your artwork, and sustain people. Things can be pretty and have a function.”

Good was excited to share her love for GWA. “I really love that since GWA is smaller, I get to know the kids so well. I see them like twice a week and I get to really build relationships with them and see their art progress. I love seeing them surprise themselves with what

they’re able to do because they’re able to do so much more than what they think.”

She has felt welcomed from day one and was especially impressed with the positivity that surrounds her every day. “It’s just an amazing environment,” she said. “I feel like this past school year, every single day, there was not a single day that I dreaded coming to work. I was excited every day. It’s just really special to have your place of work be your happy place.”

She shared her plans to have a lower school art show in The George on Grandparents Day next year. “We’re gonna make a lot of cool stuff in preparation for that. So I’m really excited.”

middle school 7 adventures in Washington, D.C.

While in Washington, D.C., GWA seventh-grade students were able to gain valuable insight into many historical events that they have studied over the years. The trip began bright and early with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon, to Mount Vernon, and time spent exploring the U.S. Army Museum. When visiting Arlington National Cemetery, our students were given the opportunity to watch the changing of the guard. Additionally, Maddie Carter, Wyatt Vaughn, Will Watts, and Allie Mae Zaleski were selected to participate in

a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This ceremony was a very humbling and special event to witness alongside the students. The students spent time in many of the Smithsonian Museums including the Natural History Museum and the American History Museum. They were also able to view many air and space technologies at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. Visits were made to the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress, where the students saw the Speaker of the House.

The students were also immersed in a spy experience at the Spy Museum and had the opportunity to visit many of the monuments on the National Mall. At the conclusion of the trip, the students viewed the National Mall from the top of the Washington Monument and went on a tour of the White House. Just before boarding the plane home, the students visited the Holocaust Museum where they were able to meet a Holocaust survivor and hear his inspiring story.

Chattanooga, TN and more...

Sixth grade traveled to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama to participate in the Pathfinder Program at Space Camp. The program looks at the NASA space missions starting with Project Gemini all the way to the missions that are occurring today with the Artemis Program. They had the opportunity to train for a mission in the role of Mission Control, space shuttle crew, or crew on the International Space Station. Students also got to experience

The GWA eighth-grade class embarked on a journey to Dahlonega, Georgia, to explore the renowned gold mines, where they learned that Georgia had once been a significant producer of gold, leading to the establishment of a U.S. mint. Continuing the expedition, students traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee. There, they observed the distinction between man-made and geographical boundaries, embarked on a simulated journey to Mars, explored underwater wonders, and learned about Ruby Falls, a site over 1,000 feet below the surface. On the final

pieces of equipment used to train astronauts such as the Multi Axis Trainer (MAT) and the Five Degrees of Freedom (5DF) Chair. During the program students and chaperones built and launched their own rockets with some becoming part of the “Space Camp Hall of Fame.” Students said that they were unable to comprehend the scale of the Saturn V Rocket used to launch the Apollo Astronauts to the Moon until they saw it in person.

day, students visited state parks dedicated to preserving Native American heritage. They strolled through the grounds of once thriving nations, experiencing the rich history of the Mississippian culture at the Etowah Indian Mounds and learning about the Cherokee Native Americans at New Echota. The class excursion concluded at the Tellus Museum, where students were able to delve into exhibits of their choosing. They relished the opportunity to document their experiences on social media, purchase souvenirs, and, most importantly, forge lasting memories.

more than academics

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS THROUGH THE COUNSELING OFFICE

Our school counseling department treats social, emotional, and academic needs of the individual student, but the department is so much more.

GWA School Counseling offers multi-tiered services where students can participate in small group sessions and provides school-wide programs to help the entire student population.

Throughout the year, our school counseling office offers several small group opportunities such as new student lunch bunch, worry management,

and study skills. They also organize school-wide activities including Finals De-stress, bringing in therapy dogs and offering activities and games for a brain break. Counselors visit classrooms and work with students through lessons on character development that helps to improve academic success.

Middle and upper school counselor, Amber Thomason, manages the Advisory Program. The advisory program aims to build relationships on campus, offer another layer of support for students, and provide lessons that target wholechild development. Advisors are another mentor for our students to go to for support and guidance with their academic careers.

INAUGURAL YEAR

This year GWA started our first Junior Beta Club for grades 6-8 with 89 inaugural members that earned a 90-grade point average or above. Alongside sponsors Amber Thomason, Kellye Burkhart, and Katie Dickerson, the group engaged in 18 service projects and completed 545 hours of service to the community. Members visited Great Oaks, the Humane Society, and completed projects for patients at CHOA. Junior Beta members also helped on campus through garden clean-ups, DAWGS Unleashed, Gingerbread Christmas, and partnered with the lower school’s Kids Who Care Club.

CAPSTONE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

The Community Service CLE spent valuable time at the The Overlook Senior Living facility and at F.I.S.H. in Monroe and Loganville and learned more about the needs of those who are underserved in Walton County during a visit from Katie Butler of United Way.

Students in the Human and Civil Rights CLE gained valuable insight, and information through lecture, discussions, and small group activities. The topics covered included human rights in both an American and global context as well as civil rights and economic rights. With daily visits from guest speakers, students were provided with firsthand knowledge from experts in the legal profession and government.

Mr. Jameson, Coach Jackson, and Mrs. Johnson accompanied GWA upper school students on trips to Atlanta. The itinerary comprised visits to prominent locations such as the Atlanta Botanical Garden, The King Center, Atlanta’s historic Graffiti Tunnels, and Krog Street Market. On the final day of Winter Term, students (with help from Mr. Jameson) collaborated to create an amazing graffiti mural.

The Winter Term Digital Citizenship CLE class learned how digital media affects social and mental well-being, the various privacy conflicts that arise through digital media and data tracking, and the ever-changing landscape of legal and ethical issues surrounding digital media and technology. They also examined

some positive ways that students and individuals use social media to connect with colleges and careers, and how to develop a positive digital image that reflects personal interests and goals.

The Entrepreneurial Leadership CLE focused on teamwork and leadership. After taking a detailed assessment to determine their leadership styles, the students traveled to an Escape Room at the Mall of Georgia to put what they learned to the test.

The Life Skills for College and Beyond! CLE taught students the basics of crockpot cooking, how to craft healthy meal plans and cost effective grocery lists, etiquette, sewing skills, and offered insight into the college application process.

INTERNSHIPS

Winter Term Internship opportunities allowed for juniors and seniors to get real-world experience in the work force and explore future career possibilities. Ninetyfive of our upperclassmen were able to participate in the internship program.

Upper school students flew planes, worked on cars, learned about producing radio broadcasts, learned about marketing and retail, worked alongside doctors, veterinarians, and other medical professionals, and learned from judges in the courtroom.

These invaluable experiences showed them what they might or might not want to pursue as a future career.

STUDENTS TRAVELED TO ITALY AND GREECE FOR A STEM-BASED TRIP DURING WINTER TERM

Nine GWA students and two teachers, Kellie Watts, and Suzy Quinlan, adventured to Venice, Italy, Mainland Greece (Athens, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Corinth) as well as one of the Greek Islands, Samos, during Winter Term. The educational trip was STEM focused and included a tour of the flood control system in Venice and a visit to the cave on Mount Kerkis, lived in by Pythagoras around 400 BCE. They visited the top of the Campanile of San Marco and stood where Galileo Galilei explained his Horizons of Man on Aug. 21, 1609. The group toured the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Cathedral and had rowing lessons through the canals and on open water.

PARENTS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE GWA EXCHANGE PROGRAM WITH ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL IN BARCELONA, SPAIN

“Our son, Aritz, attended the George Walton Academy last September, where he was wonderfully hosted by the Wilson family. He had the best experience of his life discovering the wonders and the customs of the South of the United States and is really grateful for having enjoyed such an opportunity.

This January, Trace attended St Paul’s School and we welcomed him into our family with open arms and hearts. We had a wonderful time rediscovering Barcelona with him and showing him the Spanish way of life. Trace’s charm and intellectual curiosity made the experience really enjoyable and easy for all of us, to the point where he became part of our family, and we were really sad when he had to leave.”

– Norbert Martinez and Iratxe Abraguin, St. Paul’s Barcelona host parents

EXCHANGE STUDENTS WERE WELCOMED ON CAMPUS FROM SPAIN, MEXICO AND FRANCE

“Aritz enriched our home life greatly, he was up for any adventure, and we kept him plenty busy with middle school sports and our daughter’s college softball, football games, Sam Hunt concert, tour of Atlanta, learning wake boarding and tubing in SC, trip to beach!

All of my kids and my slightly large family really became attached!

In return sending my only boy to Spain was easy as I knew the family would embrace and already knew Trace before his arrival. They prepared him his own room with stunning mountain views. He walked 3 minutes to school easily caught train to enjoy dining and may have enjoyed a few trips to the arcade with other students. He walked steps in the backyard to hiking trails into great mountainous views overlooking the city. And to top it off zipped off to Switzerland for snow skiing as student break with the host family. He missed us but wished to stay longer, so in all we could not have asked for more!

– Stewart and Sherri Wilson, GWA host parents

After hosting Sofia with us in the fall, Annalise spent 4 weeks with Sofia and her family in their home in Barcelona. Her family was very friendly and welcoming and made Annalise feel at home. Annalise experienced the Three Kings Day celebration, went skiing in the Pyrenees and explored beautiful Barcelona and the surrounding area with her host family, friends and with the school. She left Barcelona with cherished memories, newly formed friendships, and a deep appreciation for Spain’s culture and traditions. We are so grateful that GWA and St. Paul’s offered this exchange program and Annalise was able to participate this year.

-Debbie Digby, GWA host parent

We were so happy to have Annalise at our home last January, so sad to see her leave. We have really enjoyed the exchange experience, learning a lot of things with her. We miss her already and can’t wait to spend more time together in the future. Sofía has had a great experience too. We are so thankful to Annalise’s family for hosting her with such care and the George Walton Academy for giving her the opportunity of living the local US way of life, the High School experience and the study methodology.

CREATIVE ENDEAVORS IN FINE ARTS

On stage, in our art studios, on field trips and during school events, our exemplary visual and performing arts programs continue to excel.

SENIOR ARTISTS SHINE

Senior artists held their Senior Art Exhibition in May. They displayed their works and discussed their inspirations and creative processes.

Congratulations to our talented 13 upper school students who auditioned and made the cut for this year’s District Honor Band. They auditioned with over 950 students from more than 30 high schools. There were just over 200 students divided into three bands that made up the honor bands.

They rehearsed with these outstanding guest conductors:

-Dr. Laura Moates Stanley from Brookwood HS

-Associate Director of Bands, Jacksonville University in Florida, Mr. Chris Cresswell

-Commander of the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest, LT. Col. Brian Miller

After three days of practice with their new conductors and new band friends, they performed in front of a packed house in the 1000 seat auditorium at Jackson County High School. What an amazing event and great opportunity for our young musicians! 13

Sable Thompson McIntyre

Class of 2012

Sable is the Director of Bands at C.W. Davis Middle School in Flowery Branch, GA. She was selected in 2023 to perform with the Band Director Marching Band for the Macy’s Day Parade last November. This coveted position is awarded to the best band directors from across the United States.

“I underwent a rigorous application process, submitting essays detailing my bands’ accomplishments, unique qualities, community service plans through music, and more. It has always been my dream to perform in the parade, so when I was chosen from over 900 applicants, I was beyond thrilled,” Sable said.

415 directors, who had never met before, came together just two days prior to the parade for their first rehearsal. On the day of the parade, they had a call time of 1:30 a.m. and only 10 minutes to rehearse at Herald Square, the site of the live TV broadcast.

“We also had the distinct honor of being the first and only band to perform at the 9/11 Memorial. Our performance featured patriotic melodies, paying tribute to those tragically lost on 9/11 and honoring the first responders who bravely rushed towards danger that day. It was truly the experience of a lifetime, and I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of it.”

Sable is currently working towards her master’s degree in music education at America Band College through Central Washington University and will begin work towards her specialist

degree next summer. She plays clarinet, as a member of the North Georgia Winds, the group has been selected to perform at Pearl Harbor on June 14, 2025 and Sable will be participating in this patriotic event.

Brelan Holston

Class of 2019

Brelan Holston is a young entrepreneur working in the family business for mortuary services and last fall, started his own business, Holston Family Insurance for insurance sales and services. His goal is to one day combine the insurance services with the three funeral firms owned by his parents.

Brelan graduated from Fort Valley State University, Summa Cum Laude in 2023 with a degree in Media Studies. He attended all four years on scholarship earning a Division II basketball scholarship and an academic scholarship. After graduating Brelan obtained his insurance license and currently offers financial planning for families primarily for income replacement and burial insurance.

“Both of my parents, Chedonna Trimble-Holston and H. Bernard Holston, are licensed Funeral directors and embalmers,” said Brelan. “I am training to be one now under my father’s two firms Bernard’s Family Funeral Care. My mother owns Donald Trimble Mortuary in Decatur where I do funeral arrangements and pre-need insurance policies as the family service counselor.”

In the fall, Brelan will attend John A. Gupton College getting an associate degree in applied sciences for funeral service.

If his plate wasn’t already full, Brelan is active in the community. He is a 2021 spring initiate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and involved in all of their endeavors and support. He is a member of Antioch East AME Church in Conyers where he helps with the tech team at church, sings in the choir occasionally, and serves on the usher board. He has been involved in the church over the years from teaching Sunday School, to being a guest speaker for Youth Sunday, and creating podcasts for the congregation on topics related to financial literacy.

Brelan is also involved in the GWA family as the boys JV head coach and an assistant to Matt Reynolds on varsity, in addition to running the boy’s youth basketball camp

this summer. “Coach Reynolds was my JV coach at GWA. I was happy to join him when he asked me, since he was one of my favorite coaches at GWA,” Brelan remarked when asked why he returned to the GWA basketball community. “I helped the JV squad to their first region championship in school history and helped the varsity reach the final four this year. Since then, I have helped coach a Walton County AAU team - Team H.I.M. (Hustle, Intensity, Momentum) for eighth and tenth grade. The tenth-grade squad is made up of all GWA guys in 9th and 10th grade and I try to help them prepare better for next season. I also offer basketball training services to develop the young kids in the Walton County area. My goal is to teach respect, faith, and determination in basketball and life.”

MEET BRITTON RYAN

Dear George Walton Academy Family,

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Director of Development at George Walton Academy. My name is Britton Ryan, and it is an honor to join this wonderful community. As someone who is deeply passionate about education and the power of philanthropy, I am truly excited to be a part of the GWA family.

An unrestricted gift to the Annual Loyalty Fund (ALF) is the first and most important gift a supporter makes to GWA each year. The school receives annually more than 500 gifts from parents, grandparents, staff, alumni and friends. The ALF is an essential source of income beyond tuition, accounting for 7% of the operating budget. The ALF goal for 2024-25 is $900,000, which helps bridge the gap between tuition and the cost to educate a student. The ALF supports operating expenses such as teachers’ and coaches salaries and benefits, student laptops, athletic field maintenance, curriculum and classroom materials, and much more.

Every ALF gift makes a difference, no matter its size Every student matters Every teacher matters Every gift matters

Included as part of the ALF, corporate partnerships are a great way to engage members of our business community to promote their products and services as well as GWA Corporate partners enjoy advertising benefits online and on campus, in select GWA publications, and through sponsorship of the school’s signature fundraising events
