GUSA demands more sexual assault education Following President Obama’s formation of a White House Task Force on Protecting Students from Sexual Assault, GUSA released a list of thorough, practical suggestions for improving policies and services for survivors of sexual assault at Georgetown. The statement’s recommendations include providing closed-circuit cameras to reduce interaction between survivors and perpetrators in hearings, allowing administrators to replace students on the hearing board, mandating bystander education for students and staff, and outlining when the University would proceed with a hearing against the survivor’s wishes.

These recommendations make great strides toward improving the hearing process for sexual misconduct and preventing sexual assault through education. The strength of these suggestions derives from their support of survivors. Making sexual history and dress inadmissible in sexual misconduct hearings would keep the blame away from the survivor and reduce victim-blaming. GUSA also recommends hiring

trauma specialists at Counseling and Psychiatric Services and confidential Health Education staff, which would offer survivors further support both during and after hearings.

Another suggestion important to making campus safer yet easy to implement is making bystander education mandatory for students and staff at the beginning of the year with follow-up sessions throughout the year. To do so, GUSA plans on increasing funding for RU Ready, an educational program sponsored by Health Education Services, the Women’s Center, and other groups, in addition to including sexual assault discussions as a part of GUSA’s What’s a Hoya program. Though Nate Tisa (SFS ‘14) and Adam Ramadan (SFS ‘14) led the campaign for New Student Orientation to hold mandatory sexual assault and bystander education this past fall, NSO instead held a voluntary sexual assault ice cream social as part of Welcome Week. This second attempt to have mandatory education as part of Welcome Week

reflects GUSA’s dedication to this issue. Systematic changes would be instrumental in shifting campus culture away from victim-blaming.

According to the Washington Post, the White House report found that one in five women on college campuses is sexually assaulted, and, of those, only one in eight report the incidence.

Obama gave his task force 90 days to come up with recommendations for colleges in order to ameliorate these issues—GUSA responded within hours. While the University should look toward the recommendations the governmental task force will make, it should first consider the suggestions GUSA has made, because they are campus-specific and many are easy to implement. Georgetown must show a greater commitment to preventing sexual assault and improve the process of misconduct hearings, and GUSA needs to ensure the University will follow through with action. The administration should implement these changes as soon as possible in order to create a safer campus.

HOOPED ON PHONICS

Academic ineligibility reveals underlying issue

Georgetown basketball Head Coach John Thompson III announced last Friday that center Joshua Smith has been deemed academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. Smith’s case is the second instance in so many seasons in which a member of the team’s starting five has been taken off the roster for academic reasons.

Early last season, former forward Greg Whittington was required to stay on the bench.

Thompson supports the school’s high academic standard and revealed obvious dissatisfaction with Smith when informing the media, which is understandable considering Georgetown’s athletic administration put a lot time, effort, and money into bringing Smith to the Hilltop and getting him ready to anchor the Hoyas at the low post. Smith even received a waiver from the NCAA allowing him to play this past fall after transferring from UCLA in December 2012, whereas players are typically required to wait two full semesters before getting back on the court. Seeing the effort of both Georgetown and the NCAA go to waste because of an aca-

demic suspension indicates that athletes need more assistance when it comes to maintaining Georgetown’s high academic standards.

Season-ending academic suspension has now affected two basketball players two years in a row, making it apparent that these players were not given adequate support in balancing their academic and athletic responsibilities.

With the funds being poured into the basketball program, the value of having a successful, winning team should not be forgotten. The reason Smith transferred to Georgetown was to play basketball, and therefore he should have received appropriate academic support in order for him to be on the court day in and day out.

Athletes should not be granted lower academic standards than the rest of Georgetown’s students. However, with the time commitment necessitated by practice, games, travel schedules, and team meetings, athletes should be receiving more aid on the academic portion of college life.

The need for more academic monitoring applies especially for Georgetown’s basketball players

who, for the most part, receive full scholarship opportunities to play and study here. There needs to be more communication between professors and the athletic administration on the status of these basketball players so that they will not surprise their sports programs with failing grades that make them ineligible to play.

Admittedly, athletes should be responsible for their academics. However, when held to the high academic standard of a university like Georgetown, the university staff should also be held responsible for ensuring the academic welfare of sports teams. Georgetown’s athletic administration and academic advisors need to tighten their communication when it comes to high-profile student athletes to whom the university is granting scholarship money. Whether these student-athletes need more help in catching up on missed classes or more attention on difficult material, a more proactive effort is necessary in making sure they pass—instead of placing emphasis on academics when it is already too late to save their eligibility.

SOTU vows action with or without Congress

On Tuesday night, President Obama delivered his fifth State of the Union Address. For sixty-five minutes he balanced the retrospective and the visionary, alluding to 2013’s political failures while forecasting a “year of action” to promote American equality, employment, and security domestically and abroad. Delivering a confident speech despite flagging approval ratings and intransigent opposition, Obama presented few new initiatives to excite progressive policymakers. He instead reiterated many of the same goals, from tax code to immigration reform, that met their end in Congress last year—and appeared almost verbatim in 2013’s State of the Union.

Tuesday’s speech, nevertheless, attempted to reconcile a disappointing legislative year with the resolve needed to face the next, and, hopefully, to reinvigorate a stagnating presidency.

Obama balanced offense and defense, essentially telling Republicans, who triggered the government shutdown last year, to stop com-

plaining about the Affordable Care Act and start cooperatively working toward improving it. Congress will not likely alter its tactics anytime soon, however, Obama asserted his determination to alter his own. The president answered constituents’ frustrations—along with his own—by vowing to use presidential executive action to circumvent future Congressional gridlock. He announced his first order of raising the minimum wage for federal employees to $10.10, a small impact with a big indication.

Obama’s policy to-do list was not unfamiliar: infrastructure, progress in STEM fields, access to higher education, job opportunities, energy independence, Afghan and Syrian peace, a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, combating terrorism alongside international partners, and closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay. By far, the most innovative part of his address came from not the president himself, but rather the White House’s initiative to make this

the “most interactive State of the Union ever.” As seen in the trending topics such as #SOTU and #SOTUsocial, the White House officially live tweeted the event complete with quotes, photos, and premade infographics with facts and statistics reinforcing Obama’s talking points.

The president’s final remarks, prompting the longest standing ovation of the evening from both sides of the aisle, lauded Army Ranger Cory Remsburg, a wounded veteran of the war in Afghanistan. Obama’s retrospective conclusion showed his acceptance of his past mistakes, while yet again looking hopefully toward the future. Quoting Remsburg, Obama reminded his audience that America has never come easy, particularly that “our freedom, our democracy has never been easy.” The remainder of his term will reveal whether his resolve can sustain that fight—which will largely be determined by Obama’s ability to act upon his promise to actually move forward, with or without Congress.

Second month of What’s a Hoya What’s A Hoya began its second month of sessions on Sunday with a theme of “Cura Personalis,” focusing on health and well-being.

The freshmen-only personal development program, first launched in November, provides 0.1 housing selection points for attendees for every month of participation. According to Megan Murday (SFS ‘15), one of the three coordinators, about 500 students participated in the first series of sessions in November.

The health theme of What’s a Hoya includes discussions on mental health, substance abuse, sexual assault, and neighborhood safety.

The program includes a student-made video called “Sleep When You’re Dead,” which portrays the stressful academic culture at Georgetown, and incorporates interactive text message polling.

In a poll administered on Sunday, over 70 percent of the audience said that academics is the most stressful component of their Georgetown experience.

The last session of this theme will be on Feb. 3. The next and final theme of the academic year will be “Community and Diversity.”

Doha hosted a nondenominational ESCAPE retreat among other traditional Georgetown events.

A D.C.-Doha Dialogue event on Monday linked the two campuses in a teleconference on the role of Jesuit education at each respective campus. According to Fr. Matthew Carnes, S.J., the event could not be public due to space limitations.

GU Women Who Code, a new organization for women interested in learning computer coding skills, launches today.

According to co-founder and Georgetown Chief Information Officer Lisa Davis, the club will provide coding classes to students, staff, and faculty, invite successful women in technology careers to speak to students, and reach out to local middle and high schools to teach coding.

“One of the things we have been doing over the last two years … is really focused on creating this culture of innovation and technology at Georgetown and changing the mindset of how we think of technology,” Davis said. “One of my passions … has been to promote women and young girls to be interested in STEM.” Lisa Singh, co-founder of GU Women Who Code and associate professor in computer science, said that her interest in starting the club originated from her experiences with her computer science women’s group.

“A few years after I first joined Georgetown, I started a women’s group in the CS department. … I’ve

always been excited that we have had this group, but it does not grow, because it is only the people who come into the major,” said Singh. “I always wanted to promote the idea that we really need to have students who are non-majors understand ideas that are related to computational thinking.”

Singh, the only female professor out of 16 full-time professors in the computer science department, said that percentages of female math and computer science majors at Georgetown are below the national average.

She estimated that it varied between ten and 25 percent each year.

Davis and Singh originally envisioned a group of ten to 12 people and have instead been overwhelmed by the volume of interest. According to Davis, they have received almost 150 emails of interest from students, faculty, and staff. Davis noted that men also expressed interest and will be permitted to participate, although the group is targeted toward women.

“We’re not going to turn anyone away,” Davis said. “[Yet], it may be more comfortable for guys to go over the computer science club since it already exists and is primarily males.”

“What we might consider if we get a large number of men interested in this is having two different groups that are more broad coding groups,” Singh said.

The Georgetown University Computer and Electronics Club disputed the description of their club. “GUCEC has a pretty even breakdown,” GUCEC Head of Program and Events Andrew Hian-Cheong (COL ’15) wrote in an email to the Voice. “I see the clubs being complementary, not mutually exclusive and I’d have a hard time seeing GUCEC as being more comfortable for one gender over the other.”

Besides skill training, Davis also plans for GU Women Who Code to give back to the community by teaching and generating interest in computer science for local middle and high school girls.

Although she and Singh are launching the club, Davis hopes that students will take charge so that she eventually can serve just as a “consultant.” Davis also stated that the University is discussing one-credit practical skills courses, including coding training, that could launch this summer.

Veterans bakery opening June Room rental fees for clubs to be removed by 2015

The Dog Tag Bakery, a non-profit organization that will provide education and employment opportunities for disabled veterans and their spouses, will open in June after delays in construction pushed back the original goal of opening in February.

The store, located in Georgetown at 3210 Grace St., will implement the vision of founder Fr. Richard Curry, S.J. to support disabled veterans through skill training and assistance for civilian life.

“With Georgetown’s assistance, we can realize our goal of empowering these extraordinary men and women as they transition back to civilian life,” Curry wrote in an email to the Voice.

As a result of the delays, construction of the bakery has just started, but according to Curry, management will use the extra time to develop more infrastructure for veterans.

According to Director of Development and Fundraising Adam Mortillaro (COL ‘12), the bakery will run a six-month training program alongside the School of Continuing Studies to train disabled

veterans in entrepreneurship, communications, and leadership development and will additionally provide personal counseling and support. The program will initially accept ten trainees and may expand in the future.

The bakery is recruiting veterans through veteran service organizations throughout the D.C. area, including the Walter Reed Military Medical Center, and may also hire Georgetown students and local non-veterans.

“We’d like to have as many veterans as possible in the bakery but depending on the workflow, we might not be able to staff in entirely veterans … [so] we’d turn to the neighborhood and, of course, to Georgetown students,” Mortillaro said. “A lot of these guys are coming back from overseas and they’re no older than you or I are. To have that kind of interaction with [Georgetown] students with vastly different life experiences, we think it would be an incredible asset.”

Mortillaro hopes the Dog Tag Bakery will eventually spread beyond D.C. to “serve an ever-widening pool of veterans and their families.”

by Caitriona Pagni The Georgetown University Student Association announced Tuesday that the administration has agreed to remove fees for student use of smaller programming spaces by fiscal year 2015.

According to a press release from GUSA, student groups will be able to use McShain Lounges, Bulldog Alley, the Leavey Program Room, the Leavey Club Room, all Reynolds rooms, and all rooms in the Healey Family Student Center without paying rental fees.

Fees will remain in place for spaces such as Gaston Hall, Copley Formal Lounge, ICC Auditorium, and Lohrfink Auditorium because they are “more formal, public spaces” and “cost more to maintain,” according to Erika Cohen-Derr, director of the Center for Student Engagement.

“SAC groups will see a slight benefit in that they do not have to budget for informal

spaces. However, they will still have to budget for the more desirable ones,” said SAC Chair Patrick Musgrave (COL ‘16).

The agreement was part of a larger tuition allocation overhaul to redistribute funding to advisory boards. The division of student affairs will now also fund infrastructure expenses such as Hoyalink, Student Activities Fairs, trainings, and students activities administrative office costs, a total of about $65,000 annually that was formerly funded by advisory boards.

GUSA President Nate Tisa (SFS ‘14) hopes that the elimination of space fees will help centralize student life on campus. “There is a certain intangible benefit to feeling like this is your campus, this is your home.

When you have to pay to use on campus space, it creates this transactional feeling that will no longer exist in spaces like the Healy Family Student Center,” Tisa said.

Ryan-Mulledy in design stage ResLife alters housing selection policy The Office of Residential Living amended the housing selection policy on Jan. 16, preventing students accepted to fall semester study abroad from entering housing selection.

Previously, study abroad applicants could enter the housing selection process and withdraw from housing if accepted to study abroad.

According to Executive Director for Residential Services Patrick Killilee, a popular practice for rising juniors going abroad in the fall was to have fellow juniors remaining on campus for the fall pull up sophomores to fill their spots until they returned in the spring. The sophomores would then voluntarily withdraw from their housing agreement to allow returning juniors to reclaim their spots.

According to Craig Rinker, director of overseas studies in the Office of International Programs, the housing application and selection process is now transitioning from an annual to a biannual process and selection will

now occur after study abroad decisions are confirmed.

The change requires rising juniors who choose rising sophomores to hold housing spots to now enter selection together. Because, according to the housing handbook, rising sophomores have three housing points and rising juniors have four, such groups will be disadvantaged.

Rinker said that he “does not anticipate significant impacts to the accessibility of campus housing as a result of this transition” since students will be expected to apply for housing for “the appropriate semester they will be on campus.”

On Tuesday, Will Simons (COL ‘16) created a Facebook event in reaction to the policy alteration. Simons argues the policy “essentially states that any student who wishes to receive desirable, on-campus housing must forego fall study abroad,” limiting student accessibility to study abroad and forcing students who already made plans for fall study abroad to reconsider their options.

At the time of publication, the event had already garnered over 600 “attendees” who indicated their support. Killilee addressed such concerns, saying that “this is not meant to penalize students who are studying abroad in any way. … It’s not a change in policy, it’s a change in procedure.”

The change was also added into the housing selection manual without a public announcement to the student body.

“We don’t normally send something out every time it’s been [edited], but we also knew we were doing our kickoff email this week for the housing selection process,” Killilee said. “It’s six to seven weeks before the first selection phase … so that really is a fair amount of time, I think, for people to make plans.”

Georgetown University Student Association Senate Speaker Sam Greco (SFS ‘15) told the Voice that GUSA would be meeting with housing Thursday to clarify the policy and implications.

The University selected the architecture firm Ayers Saint Gross as the architects for the renovation. According to Director of Media Relations Rachel Pugh, this choice was “based on [ASG’s] experience with similar projects [on residential campuses]

… [and] their understanding of the unique history of these buildings and the challenges they may present.”

Manhattan Construction Company, which worked on Dahlgren Chapel’s renovations, will be responsible for construction works.

The halls are anticipated to open in fall 2015. The University plans to hold student engagement sessions in March and April on “interior designs and programming in Ryan and Mulledy,” according to Pugh.

Contrast that with management occupations in the District, which saw more than a three percent increase in compensation, from $125,800 to $129,610.

Some low-wage workers fared a bit better. Those in the official BLS grouping called “Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations” got an average raise of 2.67 percent, but only from $29,890 to $30,690. And some

Production and manufacturing workers got a cut from $49,750 to $49,710. Transportation and Material Moving Occupations went from $40,940 to $40,370. Construction workers made more money, but only 1.1 percent more—from $54,320 to $54,930—putting their raise well under the rate of inflation. Likewise for Healthcare Support workers, who earned 0.85 percent more, from $31,590 per year to $31,860 on average.

Compare all of that to the perennial D.C. industry—legal occupations—which saw a pay increase of 4.24 percent in one year alone, rising from $138,160 to $144,010.

It’s important to not put too much stock in wage numbers from a one-year period alone, but the BLS numbers from 201112 do seem to align nicely with data available from earlier years.

Besides the astonishing inequality and poverty-level wages for so many D.C. workers, what the statistics show us is an economy that’s not as healthy and dynamic as the Mayor would have voters believe.

by Kenneth Lee The D.C. Zoning Commission approved the University’s request to utilize the former Jesuit residences Ryan and Mulledy Halls for “residential/campus life/athletic” uses on Jan. 13. The University will renovate the buildings to fulfill the requirements of the 2010 Campus Plan. Last Friday, representatives from the Ryan-Mulledy Design Committee and the Georgetown University Student Association toured the buildings, which have been abandoned since 2003.

Committee members were particularly interested in the potential uses of the Jesuit dining room and a sunroom with a patio, which provides views of Rosslyn, downtown, and main campus, as student spaces.

“I think not only does the building help … [meet] the campus plan requirements, it also opens up the potential for incredible new student space that has real historical value,” said Jack Appelbaum (COL ’14), GUSA director of student space.

The design committee has yet to estimate how many beds the halls will provide. “I think that will depend on the feedback from the students as to what they want to see [and] what will be feasible,” said Mary Petrone (COL ‘15), a residential assistant representative on the committee.

The design committee, formed late last semester, comprises students, faculty, Jesuit priests, and planning and facilities staff. The collaborative model is similar to the New South Student Center design process.

Unemployment’s not everything

If your name is Vincent Gray, you had a good day Tuesday. You had a good day because it was unemployment day, that magical time each month when the District’s jobless numbers come out. For you, the numbers look great.

The D.C. unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent in December—a post-recession low—from 8.6 percent just a month before. This wasn’t a normal drop in unemployment, because it happened even while the labor force expanded.

Usually in this recovery, decreases in the national unemployment rate have been accompanied by thousands of people leaving the job market, but not this one. Considering that you came into office with an unemployment rate of 10 percent, things are looking good. Maybe this will put the focus back on the economy, and not that pesky shadow campaign from 2010 the Feds are still investigating and you refuse to talk about.

If you were Vince Gray, you’d be excused for thinking that way, be-

cause the numbers are actually fairly heartening, especially in Anacostia: the Ward 8 rate dropped to 17.7 percent—still high, but improved from the 25 percent observed in January 2011. Gray’s other electoral strongholds in Wards 5 and 7 improved as well, which bodes well for his chances in the crowded Democratic primary on April 1.

But that analysis, while sufficient for superficial politicking and sound bytes, ignores some economic realities lurking just under the surface. D.C. may be adding jobs, but the jobs we already have aren’t paying what they should. Looking at wage increases in the District paints a much different picture of the city’s economy. Put simply, rich folks are getting richer faster than the rest of us can catch up.

In 2011, food service workers in Washington made an average of $27,550 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2012, the latest localized information available, their average wage had dropped to $27,490 per year.

The average Business/ Financial worker in D.C., for instance, saw her income increase less than two percent, from $85,770 to $87,410, but of course that doesn’t include stock options and other company goodies.

However, it turns out those are among the most optimistic outliers. Again and again, low wage District workers actually lost money over the year in question.

Employment and wealth may be increasing in D.C., but the hundreds of thousands of service and manufacturing workers clearly aren’t feeling the benefits. In fact, they’re struggling more than ever, often losing money not just in real terms, but nominal ones as well.

Especially when we start thinking about stock options, property value, and other ways the upper class builds and retains wealth, the image of economic divergence becomes even more stark. The recent minimum wage increase Gray signed will certainly help the lowest-wage workers, but it can’t change the fundamental calculus of an economy that doesn’t work for everyone.

That picture of a sick economy should make Gray supporters rethink his tenure. He’s ridden the wave of D.C.’s economic growth so far without much forceful critique, but if these trends continue much longer it won’t just be in New York where insurgent politicos talk about a “tale of two cities.”

Men’s basketball’s effort not enough to beat ‘Nova

The lack of a low post for the Hoyas has been one of the largest detriments to the team as they have lost six of their last seven games, matching the worst losing streak in all ten of Head Coach John Thompson III’s seasons on the Hilltop.

Sitting at seventh place in the Big East, with hopes of even making the NIT beginning to dwindle, Thompson’s motley crew cannot seem to catch a break. While junior guard Jabril Trawick was finally able to return to the court for the Hoyas Monday night, after recovering from a broken jaw sustained in a game against Providence weeks earlier, Thompson was informed before the Villanova matchup that senior center Moses Ayegba had been suspended for one game by the NCAA due to “pre-enrollment reconciliation.”

Although Ayegba provides close to zero offensive presence on the court, the Hoyas could have definitely used his size in grabbing more rebounds late in the game against Villanova.

What sealed the Hoyas’ fate in their last loss, though, was the unacceptable number of turnovers, whether forced or not. Track and field dominates competition Catching up with Neumann

by Jeffrey Lin The Georgetown track and field team had an impressive showing at the Fourth Annual Hoya Spiked Shoe Club Invitational for a total of 13 first place finishes in 28 events. Delaware State, La Salle, American, and Georgetown competed in the Jan. 24 meet, held on the campus of Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Md. The Hoyas nearly doubled their seven first place finishes at the Nittany Lion Challenge, showing they are well-prepared for the championship portion of the season coming at the end of February.

Senior Matt Howard (4:11.04) won a first place finish in the one section men’s mile final where he came from behind to beat fellow Hoyas Dylan Sorenson (4:12.10) and Cole Williams (4:12.38).

The Hoyas continued to dominate in shorter distance events, with junior Tyler Smith (7.01) winning the 60-meter dash and sophomore

Devante Washington (34.89) winning the 300-meter dash.

Junior John Murray (2:29.81), sophomore Michael Lederhouse (2:30.39), and junior Collin Leibold (2:30.40) swept the top three positions in the men’s 1000-meter run. A Georgetown relay team of Murray, Howard, Leibold, and sophomore Darren Fahy led the Hoyas to victory in the men’s 4-by-800 meter relay.

The jumpers for the Georgetown men, however, could not replicate the success of the runners. Junior Richard D’Ambrosio managed to win second place in the long jump with a score of 6.58 meters, but he was the highest ranked Hoya of the meet for all jumpers.

The Georgetown women’s team was also successful during the meet, particularly freshman Emma Keenan.

In all of her events, Keenan moved clear of the competition, winning the 300-meter dash with a time of 41.03 and the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:14.44, beating fellow Hoya Hannah Neczypor (1:16.25) by nearly two sec-

Uncovering Agent Zero

Earlier this month, during a basketball game between the University of Arizona and UCLA, cameras settled on Arizona alumnus and former NBA star Gilbert Arenas.

The 32 -year-old sat courtside, hand resting on his chin—his iconic lack of interest visible on his face. NBA legend Bill Walton, the game’s commentator, spoke frankly about the man Washington Wizards fans once lovably referred to as “Agent Zero.”

“Gilbert lost his mind,” Walton said. “Life is a series of choices. We wish Gilbert the best.”

Walton’s recent comments are a reminder of a persistent and, frankly, incorrect attitude regarding the career of Gilbert Arenas, a D.C. legend whose behavioral issues have unfairly overshadowed his past success and the true reasons for his rapid decline: injury and bad timing.

Arenas’ behavioral slide, which began on Christmas Eve of 2009, has been discussed ad nauseam in the sports commentary community. Arenas admitted to storing unloaded firearms inside the Wizards’ locker room and, a week later, further investigation revealed that a gambling dispute between Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton had reportedly prompted both men to draw pistols on each other inside the Verizon Center.

Then, in one of the strangest behavioral decisions in NBA history, Arenas, along with his teammates, decided to mock his criminal situation in a cringe-worthy pre-game stunt. The Wizards surrounded Arenas in a circle, where he proceeded to pretend to draw and shoot guns at his teammates.

He was hastily suspended for the rest of the season by the NBA.

In the 1000-meter dash, the Hoyas swept the first four places. Senior Chelsea Cox finished a tight race by winning first place with a finishing time of 2:47.44, barely beating DeLoache (2:47.97), while Rachel Paul (2:58.69), and Kristen Walsh (2:58.99) waged a battle for third place.

The Georgetown women continued their winning streak in distance running with a sweep of the first three places in the 3000-meter run by junior Andrea Keklak (10:09.98), sophomore Heather Martin (10:10.63), and senior Jenna Davidner (10:11.09). Senior Taylor Doaty would also finish first in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.51.

The two relay events provided little challenge for the Georgetown women who cruised in the 4-by-400 meter relay with a team of Keklak, senior Shanique Dasilva, junior Natalie Englese, and Martin in 4:01.15, and the 4-by-800 meter relay with Cox, Neczypor, senior Joanna Stevens, and junior Annamarie Maag in 9:19.88.

Georgetown will return to State College from January 31 to Feb. 1 for the National Invitational Meet, hosted by Penn State.

During his last year on the Hilltop, he was named Big East offensive player of the year and was a second team All-American. He’ll be starting his professional career with the New England Revolution.

What does a player drafted to the MLS do in the days following the SuperDraft?

After the draft I spent some time with my friends and family that were at the draft. There was a great contingent of people there to support me because the Draft was in my hometown of Philadelphia.

Did you have an idea of what team you wanted to play for as the draft was happening?

I honestly had no idea which team I was going to get drafted to. Also, with all the trades that tend to happen in the first round, there is no way to really predict it. I was just trying to enjoy the moment and take it all in.

Are you happy playing for the Revs? Have you played with any members of the team before?

I’m definitely very pleased to be drafted to the New England

by season’s end, Arenas had a brief stint with the Memphis Grizzlies, but was out of the NBA by 2012. He found temporary refuge with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Shanghai Sharks during the 20122013 season, but was no longer on the roster at the start of this year.

So, let’s review. After a serious lapse in judgment that cost him 50 games, Arenas served his time, returned, led the Wizards in scoring for 24 games, and then was traded.

Through all of these fluctuations, he battled severe injury, eventually drifting out of the NBA. With all this information in mind, how do we define Arenas’ career? Is he the cautionary tale that critics like Walton label him as, or was he a great player who simply fell victim to extenuating circumstances? I choose the latter.

First, consider his accolades.

From the 2004-2005 season through the 2006-2007 season, Arenas averaged 27.7 points, 5.7 assists, and

How different is the training schedule with the Revs compared to training at Georgetown?

The training schedule is fairly similar to college, with training every day of the week. The only difference is I don’t have to rush to the field from Accounting or Marketing classes!

How awkward is it going to be in a few years when you’re stepping onto the field to play against Tommy Muller, Ian Christianson, or Joey Dillon? Can you expect any trash talk?

I’m definitely looking forward to interacting with my previous teammates at Georgetown at the pro level. They are all high quality players and also very driven individuals, so I’m sure they will have long careers in the MLS. If you got to play against one professional MLSer or former MLSer, who would it be and why?

If I got to play against one MLS player it would be Thierry Henry. He was an idol of mine growing up and I have a few of his jerseys at home from when he played on Arsenal. It would be a dream come to true to share the field with such a legend of the game.

In the best (and most healthy) years of Arenas’ playing career, his scoring and point guard prowess were overshadowed by some of the best players to ever play the game.

Add an unfortunately timed trade and persistent injuries, and you have a player whose talent was inexplicably hidden from the public eye.

Statements like “lost his mind,” to quote Walton, aren’t for players like Gilbert Arenas. I don’t believe Arenas will play in the NBA again, but I also don’t believe a bizarre patch of irresponsible behavior should overshadow the life he injected into the D.C. basketball community. It’s time we redefine Agent Zero’s legacy.

Standing in her living room, Anna* (COL ‘15) absorbed every detail of her house, neighborhood, and family for, what she believed to be, the last time. While she was exhilarated at the prospects of attending Georgetown University, she realized that going to college across the country came with a trenchant insecurity of not knowing when she could see her mother, siblings, or friends again. This feeling of insecurity is something that Anna had grown used to, being raised as an undocumented child in the United States.

“I told my mom, ‘nothing is going to knock me down. No bad grades, nothing like that,’ Anna said. “And she told me, ‘Go for your dreams.’” * * *

According to the College Board, approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools every year.

This number has increased steadily since 1982, when the Supreme Court ruled that all children in the country, regardless of their legal status, have guaranteed access to a full K-12 public education.

Even though the Court did not grant any student the absolute right to attend college, about 7.5 percent of undocumented students that graduate from high school find a way to move on to institutions of higher learning, according to data from the Immigration Policy Center. * * *

Anna entered into the United States from Mexico as a toddler soon after her mother had divorced her biological father.

“It was hard that we couldn’t go back to Mexico for funerals and things like that. My grandpa always cried, “You’re not going to see me pass away! I haven’t seen you guys in ten years or more.”

No matter what though, my mom would always tell my sibling and me, “Keep going, I have faith in you, you’re going to do something big.”

“When I got to high school, I thought of going to college. I was hesitant because I thought I didn’t need to go and there wasn’t a school I saw that I thought would really open my mind. And then I went to a meeting where schools like Princeton, Harvard, and Georgetown were

Georgetown University is one of the growing numbers of private colleges, including Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago, that accept undocumented students. On July 18, 2013, President John DeGioia, along with the presidents from 92 other Catholic universities, sent a letter supporting comprehensive immigration reform to Congress and reminding representatives that “no human being made in the image of God is illegal.”

As a need-blind institution, Georgetown’s admissions office does not become officially aware of the legal status

of any student until an individual’s application moves forward to the financial aid office, according to Senior Associate Director of Admissions Jaime Briseño.

“The undocumented part may only come up because it’s mentioned in a counselor letter or in an alumni interview report if the students disclose their status, but they don’t always do that. It is possible that an undocumented student may be accepted unbeknownst to us, although we may have a pretty good guess about it,” Briseño said. * * *

“I knew from as early as I could understand the concept that I didn’t have a legal status. I remember I was in elementary school when my mom told me. … I didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until people started getting driver’s licenses and start-

ed traveling that I realized that there were some things I couldn’t do.”

When time came to apply for college, she had heard that Georgetown could offer some financial aid for undocumented students. She was accepted and granted a place in the Community Scholars Program.

Throughout her time at Georgetown, she became president of Hoyas for Immigrant Rights, which advocates for immigration reform and providing rights to all people, regardless of their legal status. * * *

In 18 states, public colleges and universities charge undocumented students instate tuition rates,

and a few states provide state-based aid. In most states, however, undocumented students are required to pay the out-of-state tuition, which is nearly one and a half times the cost of what a resident has to pay, according to Roberto Gonzales of the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center. For this reason, many students look toward private and non-profit universities that can provide scholarships to students that cannot receive federal aid, take out any loans, or make enough income through work.

“Because a student who is a non-citizen cannot qualify for federal financial aid, work study, or any federally-subsidized loan, they receive funding from Georgetown,” Briseño said. He affirmed that the University does set aside a limited fund for international students, including those that are undocumented. He added that the University meets one hundred percent of demonstrated financial need for domestic students.

While undocumented students cannot fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, they can still complete the College Scholarship Service profile, which makes them eligible to receive other forms of private aid. Among the scholarships that are available to international students at Georgetown, including non-citizens, is

the 1789 scholarship. “The scholarship goes to a subset of students receiving overall Georgetown scholarship.

It’s intended to help chip away at the loans students would otherwise take out,” Melissa Foy (COL ’03), director of the Georgetown Scholarship Program, wrote in an email to the Voice.

“[There are] students in our program (not necessarily receiving our scholarship) who are undocumented. … The preference has been for first-generation college-bound students who are blazing a trail for their families in higher education,” Foy wrote. * * *

Kimberly* (SFS’ 15), a Kenyan national, had moved to the United States from Germany when she was two years old. She did not discover that she was undocumented, however, until she started applying for college. Her parents had not told her that she was a non-citizen because they had hoped that they would have been able to change their status.

Despite the news, she still applied to college and was accepted to Georgetown.

She said, “I didn’t really realize what it’s like to be undocumented until I started applying. It means you’re really limited in your choices, you have to be careful about what you say, you move far away from your family and not know when you’d be able to see them again … when my parents dropped me off at school, I had to say bye indefinitely.”

Kimberly became the first undocumented student at Georgetown to study abroad.

“After I got in, it was individual initiative and student organizations that helped me most. Once I did reach out to the administration, it was helpful and responsive,” she said. * * *

High college tuition has been one of the key challenges that non-citizens face when pursuing higher education.

“Despite my status, I still applied to college, because I knew that it was possible to go. It was just a matter of choosing which schools were more likely, particularly when it came to money, to work out. That was one of the reasons why I chose Georgetown. I knew that as a private institution, it would be more likely to give me support,” Kimberly said.

DACA recipients are not eligible for federal financial aid, federal health care, and other federal programs. For this reason, DACA often only serves as temporary relief for qualifying students.

“[DACA] wasn’t meant to be a permanent solution. Of course, it was a huge relief at the time.

But then I realized that it brought up all these existential questions about my identity. In fact, it almost made knowing about my future a little more ambiguous. For instance, DACA is not a citizenship status or any legal residency—it’s really a work permit,” Alvarez said.

Opponents of providing aid to undocumented students argue that such a policy takes away benefits from students who are actually citizens, especially for states that have decided to grant statebased aid to all students, regardless of their immigration status.

Dr. Ana Maria Mayda, associate professor of economics at Georgetown, offers an economic explanation on how providing higher education for undocumented students may actually benefit, rather than take away from government social protection programs.

“If you allow undocumented immigrants to access higher education, you’re going to have an immigrant population that is more skilled,” Mayda said in an interview with the Voice . “In general, economists believe that having a skilled population of migrant workers is going to have a positive impact on innovation rates, other firms, and growth rates ... and on the social welfare state, because a migrant is more likely to depend on the welfare state if they are less skilled and less rich.”

Other opponents to immigration reform argue that while an education for undocumented students is enriching, it does not necessarily ensure a job post-graduation. Scott Fleming (SFS ‘72), associate vice president of federal affairs, argues that this reality is a reason why Congress ought to move forward with the DREAM Act, which was spearheaded by Sen. Richard Durbin (DIL), an SFS and Law School graduate.

“Why would we want to educate these kids, young people, in the United States and at the end of that process, say, bye, go home?

That, to me, is ludicrous,” said Fleming. The DREAM Act, presented in 2001 to Congress, would grant conditional permanent residency to undocumented youths who have lived in the United States for at least five years after arriving as a child, after graduating from high school. * * *

Gilda Gallardo (COL ’17) en tered into the United States from Ayutla de Los Libres, Guerrero, Mexico through a coyote, which is an individual that specializes in human

smuggling, that her parents had hired. She was dropped off in Santa Ana, California, where she would live most of her life. For years, she and her family would sleep in the closet of her uncle’s one-bedroom apartment.

“[From] an early age I already knew what to do if I was deported and found myself in Tijuana. My parents always made me carry gold jewelry, so that I could sell it if I needed to, use the money to find shelter and call someone if I needed to.”

It was by chance that Gallardo’s counselor at school handed her an application for Georgetown.

Although she was given the application two days before the deadline, she was accepted early action. * * *

The Office of Federal Relations has worked with student groups like Hoyas for Immigrant Rights to promote immigration reform and access to higher education for undocumented students.

Last year, they collaborated on airing a movie about “Dreamers,” those who would be eligible for a pathway to citizenship under the DREAM Act, on campus with funding from the office of the president.

In addition, the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access works with non-citizens, aiding them in their transition to the University. For example, the Community Scholars Program, a summer bridge program which brings incoming first year students to campus during the summer for five weeks to take classes, is one program where CMEA officials can meet students, including ones that are undocumented.

“It’s mainly through this specific program [that] I develop these close advising relationships with the students,” said Cinthya Salazar, director of the community scholars program.

Despite comparatively generous financial aid packages and programs like the CSP, concerns remain regarding institutional knowledge of how to work with undocumented students.

“I absolutely do think that we need to educate a lot of administrators on campus. CMEA had a professional development day, and I hosted a discussion on undocumented students. Maybe 25 people passed through my table, and many didn’t even know that we have undocumented students on campus.

If you’re at the career center and you don’t know that, and a student comes in, how can you advise him?” Salazar said.

Salazar believes that greater dialogue could lead to more inclusivity.

“I think when students don’t feel supported or included its when someone doesn’t know what it means to be undocumented. It’s 2014, and this is on the news at all times. I think everyone should know, and at least the University, a little bit about the struggles of how difficult it can be to navigate the system,” she said.

The students interviewed expressed hope that they could use their education to not only advocate for their parents if need be, but also fight for the right to universal education at institutions of higher learning for all youth.

“I would say that the [efforts at higher comprehensive reform] has a lot do with Jesuit values and the core of our beliefs. This has a lot to do with who we are as a university, so we should be able to ask for this. It’s plain and simple,” Alvarez said.

Damage Control: Creative destruction hits Hirshhorn Museum

by Amanda Wynter Look straight ahead: it looks like a jar of cookies from afar, but as you get closer, you find them to be a sickly green-blue color.

To the right is a small piece of yellowing paper in a glass container—a recipe for “Corpus Wafers”: one-third cup of oil, two eggs … and one-half cup of ashes? Yes, these cookies are the 1970 creation of artist John Baldessari, and one of the many pieces in the Hirshhorn Museum’s exhibit, Damage Control: Art and Destruction since 1950.

On entrance, the exhibit confronts you with its main theme— the relationship between art and destruction.

The first room, dark and compact, places a short montage of nuclear bombs next to a piano that looks as if it could have been in one of the explosions. Though not the result of chemical warfare, this demolished piano is actually a relic from the opening of the exhibit in October of last year, when Raphael Montanez Ortiz performed one of his Piano Destruction Concerts.

This performative piece showcases a beautiful grand piano and its subsequent demolition in front of a live audience. By manipulating

the cover of the keys and using the body of the piano itself for sound, and then more radically, hacking away at the piano with a small axe, Ortiz destroys the instrument in order to create his piece of art. This seemingly paradoxical method— that of destruction for the sake of creation—appeals to intellectual sensibilities as well as one’s inner skeptic.

Take for instance Robert Rauschenberg’s Erased. The artist requested drawings from a number of his peers, only to erase them to a faint gray shadow. At once, one is forced to look more closely and almost dare to believe that there is something still on the page. Unsure of its artistic value, you may pause, but when placed in context, the ideas within Erased begin to become clear.

Immediately after this piece, you walk once again into a black portion of the space. The alternating rooms—from bright and white-walled to dark and blackwalled—compliment the exhibit, almost as if to resemble the brilliance of an explosion and the subsequent darkness that descends after the blow.

Fortunately, there are pieces that require less personal reflection and offer a more visceral experience. One of the larger

There are few things I enjoy more than counting down the days until one of my favorite bands releases their next full-length album.

An album is a snapshot of an artist’s musical talent and style at a specific the time. A good album carefully orders its tracks from top to bottom to present a band’s new ideas in the best possible way.

Sometimes I get scared when a band is putting out new music. I fear they won’t live up to my expectations. I want a band to do something new and exciting that’s also familiar: the worst thing a band can do is put out a new set of songs that imitate concepts from earlier albums.

All these hopes and fears make waiting for an album nerve-wracking, and I eagerly follow a group’s updates about the upcoming release. Hyping an LP months ahead of time is an inevitable part of making successful music releases.

Then, minutes before midnight on Dec. 12, Beyoncé dropped a fulllength album straight onto iTunes

with no prior advertising or announcements.

The immediate reaction by fans was tremendous. I saw dozens of Facebook statuses about the album that night. According to Billboard, Twitter recorded 1.2 million tweets about the album in less than 12 hours. Impressively, the album went on to debut at the top of the Billboard 200, with over 600,000 sales in an three days.

At first, I wasn’t quite sure what to think of Beyoncé’s sneak attack album release. My gut reaction was to scorn her move as pretentious and unfair to fans. If one of my favorite bands pulled a move like that, I would feel cheated out of weeks of anticipation and speculation, even if I did like the album.

Fans deserve the opportunity to judge the album based on prereleased singles. Artists typically answer questions or post videos about their songwriting process to give fans some idea of how much time and love they put into their music

white rooms houses a perfect grid of eighty small prints by Jake and Dinos Chapman, a collective piece entitled Injury to Insult. These prints are in fact re-mastered versions of Fransicso de Goya’s The Disasters of War. At first glance, they appear to be the typical portrayals of dismembered bodies and bloody priests—and then your eyes are drawn to the faces.

Chapman and Chapman have drawn over the originally troubling sketches with even more troubling faces reminiscent of aliens and ghouls. One after the other, these scenes strike a chord in our historical memories with pithy phrases such as “No se puede saber por que,” or “You cannot know why.” Not only are we forced to reckon with these historical occurrences of human destruction, but are also moved to recognize the dehumanizing effects of war by literally seeing non-human faces participating in what we know to be all too human acts of evil.

The concomitant sounds emanating throughout the exhibit produce an eerie synesthesia. You observe Chapman’s drawings it is as if they are creating the jarring noises that come from rooms before and after them. making. Following the procedure is a part of the fun.

I thought Beyoncé was being unfair to her own work by putting it out to the public without so much as a Facebook page post to go along with it. That album represents months of planning and thousands of dollars of production value, and Beyoncé didn’t want to get fans excited about it.

For one thing, by spending no money on advertising and making no announcements about the album, Beyoncé implicitly relied on her most loyal fans to spread the word about the LP. Imagine the excitement felt by the first people to see the album debut on iTunes. Due to the lack of hype and announcements, fans did all of the press work Beyoncé needed.

Moving forward into another dark room, any musician attending the exhibit would be scarred. The piece aptly named “Guitar Drag” features a Fender electric guitar being dragged by a pick-up truck through grass and hay. My friend, former Voice columnist Rebecca Barr, noted that the room itself even seemed to smell of hay—though proof of this is unknown. This confluence of the senses appealed to much more than a musicians aching heart.

The entire plan has such a doit-yourself attitude to it that it feels more like an independent band’s first release on Bandcamp than a pop icon’s fifth release on iTunes.

The excitement surrounding the release didn’t rely on the conventional system but instead drew on fans’ discovering something new and unexpected on their own. I imagine Beyoncé fans felt the same way I feel after I dig up an unknown band’s early discography and love it.

I don’t think there’s ever been a time that an album got mass, near-hysterical attention from my generation. It’s an accepted, albeit sad, truth of the music industry that the only way to make real money and attention is with singles. But Beyoncé broke the mold once again by proving that an album in its entirety still can receive widespread support.

Compare that to Pitbull’s Meltdown EP that featured hit single “Timber,” which completely stole the show and overshadowed the albums it is contained in. Of course, that may have been Pitbull’s intention all along and he

reap a sense of hope from the exhibit. These artists were wrestling with darkness and found release in artistic expression. The collection, however, calls you to find beauty where pain once stood— and perhaps, experience the same transformative power that those who were left with no other choice, once did.

may not care at all if no one pays attention to his EP or LP releases, but I think that’s the problem.

Something is lost when an artist cares most about writing a catchy four-minute song as opposed to a creative 45-minute album.

Apparently, keeping attention on the album was Beyoncé’s intention all along. “I miss that immersive experience, now people only listen to a few seconds of song on the iPods and they don’t really invest in the whole experience,” Beyoncé said, according to Billboard.

The greatest success of her bold release is that it preserves the integrity of the entire album.

With no singles released ahead of time, anyone who bought or listened to the album the night it came out had to go from track one to track 14, the way the LP is meant to be heard. That gives life back to the experience of giving an album a full listen. That’s awesome.

Dear Harvey Staged reading about Harvey Milk arrives in Georgetown

We’ve all heard the story. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man elected into office.

Patricia Loughrey’s Dear Harvey aims at depicting Milk’s life and achievements by weaving together different narratives.

Drawing from his own personal and political writings, as well as the lives of people around him, Dear Harvey is a tribute to Milk and further one for the people he inspired.

Dear Harvey puts a twist on the traditional narrative biography and breathes life into history. The performance incorporates letters and videos from the Georgetown community, knitting together the oft-examined historical with the deep and personal.

The production this Saturday will feature professional actors from D.C. alongside Georgetown students, faculty, and alumni.

A member of the Dear Harvey cast, Kaley Beins (COL ‘14), talked about her own experience on the production. Beins says that ostracization of LGBTQ individuals is “not necessarily limited to outside the front gates.” For her, staging

Dear Harvey at Georgetown shows it is possible for Catholic identity and support of LGBTQ rights to coexist and thrive in the same space.

This is the second time the play is being staged on campus.

The first reading was four years ago, at a time when only five states and the District of Columbia recognized same-sex marriage.

Today, that number has more than doubled. Even on campus, there is markedly more advocacy for the LGBTQ community. Last spring, the LGBTQ Resource Center celebrated its five year anniversary and earlier this school year GU Pride introduced their first trans* representative.

While Dear Harvey is centered on Milk’s life from decades ago, the play has continued the conversation of acceptance in a way that everyone can participate in.

The reading is co-sponsored by the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Tagliabue Initiative for LGBTQ Life, Health Education Services, and is directed by Professor Susan Lynskey.

Fainting Goat, not all that baaa-ad

by Ana Smith U Street has a sexy new attraction and it promises to make you swoon. The Fainting Goat, a new restaurant and bar lighting up U street, will serve you plenty of drinks, alternative music, and fine cuisine.

The restaurant features multiple floors with multiple bars. The upper floor provides a more private experience, with decor done in a dark wood. The entrance level features tall tables and tall mixed wood chairs opposite a bar and inset booths. Sultry pillows assuring intimacy adorn the booths, and an exquisite mirror covers one wall, hinting that this may be the place the social elite may go for a bit of privacy or sensuality—take your pick. The only source of dim lighting is the myriad of mismatched chandeliers and a candle on each table. Miniature crystal chandeliers light each inset booth. This simple yet elegant atmosphere is what makes The Fainting Goat so versatile.

The lighting is dim enough for an intimate date, but bright enough for a family outing.

As I entered the restaurant, “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons was playing in the background and I was seated immediately. The menu is divided into sections titled by the goat theme: “Nibble,” “Graze,” “Chomp,” and “Feed”, with only the in-

gredients of meals listed. Staff promise this move is intended to provide an opportunity for them to discuss options with their customers, but it leaves the menu vague at best and downright confusing at worst.

Be assured, if you ask about a dish, your server knows how to sell it. My shrimp sandwich was described by my server as being like “enjoying lunch on the docks of a fishing town in spring.”

I enjoyed the “Goat Ricotta” as an appetizer, namely, bread spread with goat cheese, drizzled with flavor, and garnished with light greens. The simple tastes were delicious. Goat cheese haters, take courage: the goat cheese was mild, without its typical pungence. While this difference would appeal to broader masses, it could leave goat cheese connoisseurs wanting more.

The main course quickly followed—a shrimp salad sandwich of crème fraiche and lemon juice, served with potato wedges on a wooden board. The sandwich was true to my server’s description, and was light, unlike the usual mayonnaise-soaked shrimp salad.

The potato wedges were, at times, a bit undercooked, but were served with traditional ketchup and the house’s homemade version, made with cardamom and cinnamon. This alternative dip was chilled and

refreshing and definitely an interesting change to the original condiment.

For dessert I had what the menu called “Banana,” and French-pressed coffee. “Banana” was, after all, a sliced, sauteed banana, on top of fried rice-paper, cardamom and cinnamon syrup, and topped with a light garnish.

I have to admit to being skeptical of this trio of flavors at first, but the dish was divine. The texture of the cooked banana meshed beautifully with the crunch of the rice paper and syrup. This dish left me craving for more through the metro ride home.

Parts of the menu may seem pricey, but it certainly doesn’t exceed the average Leo’s or Epi costs. Though the Fainting Goat promises to woo you and give you opportunities for dining privacy, misanthropes beware.

The dining staff never leave you alone for long, I personally was waited on by four different people throughout the night. I can safely say it was perhaps the best service I’ve ever had.

Reitman’s Labor Day proves arduous

by John Connor Buckley Jason Reitman’s newest film, Labor Day, is, to put it lightly, a total mess. It is a film that tries too hard to juggle multiple themes of love and innocence. Ultimately, that attempt leads to a confusing, self-destructive feature that feels more contrived than ambitious.

The main story revolves around a single mother, Adele, (Kate Winslet) who is struggling with serious depression and agoraphobia after her recent divorce. Her son, Henry (Gattlin Griffith), is the only one who can guide her through her constant worry and misery—that is, until the two find Frank (Josh Brolin) an escaped convict who accidentally committed a murder years ago, wounded after fleeing from a nearby hospital.

Henry and Adele opt to take in this fugitive and give him shelter over the Labor Day weekend, hence the title. A bond slowly forms between the introverted Adele and the fatherly Frank, while Henry is left with mixed

thoughts on the events unfolding before his eyes. He becomes close with Frank but fears that he and his mother will elope and she have no need for her son anymore, forcing Henry to live with his adulterous father.

The greatest flaw of this film is its general lack of clarity and justification of the characters’ actions.

Why did Henry and Adele agree to give this strange man shelter in the first place? Frank makes a big deal of creating an alibi—that he is holding the family hostage in case the authorities show up.

Abruptly, the problem seems to disappear, and is never readdressed in the film. Additionally, Frank wanders outside a lot despite being all over the news. They note early on that neighbors drop by the house unexpectedly, yet no one even offhandedly mentions that maybe having the escapee out in the yard might catch someone’s eye. Neither Henry nor Adele take even a brief moment to remember this man is still a murderer. These plot holes are just the surface level of all the inconsistencies and un-

explained, unjustified events that transpire.

Winslet and Brolin are good actors, but it feels like they are given nothing to do other than look upset, mildly amused, or indifferent. That goes double for Griffith, whose only action throughout the course of this film seems to be staring at people when you feel he really should be talking, or, in the case of more serious situations, actually contributing to the events instead of silently standing off to the side like a barnacle on a sunken ship.

The characters are forgettable and the film fails to capitalize on the talents of its main cast members. Even Tobey Maguire, who narrates the film as an adult Henry, sounds as if they just lifted him off the set of The Great Gatsby and asked him to use the same dull, disengaged narrator voice he did as Nick Carraway.

Labor Day is riddled with pointless scenes and subplots. While Frank and Adele grow closer at home, Henry meets a new girl in town whom he suddenly, with no

palpable buildup, becomes romantically interested in. She is much more mature, and talks more like a crude adult than a young girl. She tells Henry that Frank most likely will seduce Adele, and eventually they will leave him in the dust as they run off to live together in love. Her flippant dialogue feels especially out of place in what is otherwise a serious drama.

There is not much that can be said for the generic “tense” score of the film, and nothing about the cinematography stands out much either. But then, not much of this film stands out much at all.

The real labor is slogging through this mess of supposed drama as it moves at a snail’s pace, knowing it easily have been shortened down to 80 minutes.

Bibio, The Green EP, Warp Records On his latest release, The Green EP, Bibio doesn’t let lyrics get in the way of his storytelling. In fact, Bibio’s lyrics sit on the sidelines for much of this six-track record, allowing for a dynamic sound while maintaining well-balanced instrumentation. Without having to worry about dominant vocals, English producer Stephen Wilkinson—stage name Bibio— paints intensely emotional and nostalgic landscapes in his distinctive guitar-heavy, electronic-folk sound.

A follow up to Bibio’s 2013 fulllength release, Silver Wilkinson, The Green EP is his acoustic-oriented exploration of the track “Dye The Water Green,” which is featured on the album. This song successfully lays the tone for the rest of the collection, immediately launching the listener into

a consuming sound space. Characterized by its gentle pace and expressive guitar line, a lo-fi nostalgia seeps into every element of the song, from the distant reverbed vocals to the soft synth drone.

Wilkinson’s impressive ability to communicate vivid images is never more apparent than in “Dinghy” and “The Spinney View of Hinkley Point,” both of which are illustrative instrumentals. “Dinghy” is simply composed, relying on one basic twangy guitar riff, repeated throughout the track, to carry the song. Bibio’s imagination is brought to life by the dynamic swing of the song, beginning with an extended crescendo followed immediately by an equally gradual diminuendo. This swell draws the listener into the experience before gently bringing them back before moving on to Wilkinson’s next beautiful landscape.

The EP’s final track, “The Spinney View of Hinkley Point” is another instrumental. Unlike “Dinghy,” it isn’t the songs dynamics that conjure a green, sun-soaked memory, but rather it’s Bibio’s folky percussion section that gives the song its character. Highlighted by a tambourine, the drum line floats along giving the strings and guitar beneath it a consistent structure without taking away

Tapas: The Spanish incuisition

It’s 1993, and it’s the night of Bill Clinton’s inauguration. You and some pals are strolling, looking for any late night grub other than a horribly smoky, cholesterol and wrinkly senator-filled steakhouse. And then you see it.

“Ja-lay-ow? your friend said as he squint into the softly lit red interior. “No, it’s Ha-leh-oh,” you said, leaning on the year of Spanish you studied during your awkward middle school years.

Founder José Andrés was right in realizing that Washington needed a tapas bar in its once-horrendous food scene.

When Jaleo opened in the early ‘90s, it was part of the beginning of a wave of tapas bars that have since revolutionized the D.C. meal.

The tapas dish reminds foodies that small servings and variety are key, rather than hav-

ing a huge portion of one single kind of food á la Cheesecake Factory. Personally, I prefer a slow, well-digested meal to one that lets me model for a maternity photoshoot after the fact.

And who would argue that variety is not a part of healthy living? Options create more interesting meals, preventing the kind of culinary boredom that leads us to overeat in an attempt to satisfy our cravings. It also provides balance, giving our bodies a wider range of nutrients than we otherwise would receive.

Eating tapas is also social.

Think about it: small plates, big selection—it’s bonding waiting to happen. Traditionally, dishes are small and served a few at a time in regular intervals. This allows for the lingering and tasting of the various flavors, while facilitating lively discussion.

This brief record gives the listener a chance to dive into Bibio’s imagination and experience the world he has created. On The Green EP, Wilkinson successfully transports the listener to his soundscapes, defined by their nostalgia and their intense emotion.

Ultimately, this EP gives the listener a glimpse over the fence, and shows how much greener things can be.

As is always the case, quality beats quantity.

tures the tone of the eponymous sophomore effort of Emily Kokal’s Los Angeles-based band, Warpaint.

A puzzling album, Warpaint’s gritty texture and nocturnal melodies prove distinct, and yet they keep a familiarity with classic shoegaze.

The album opens lackadaisically with “Intro.” Twelve seconds in, the music stops. “Sorry,” Kokal says, and the band starts over. The purposeful mess-up is peculiar but it’s also indicative of the active participation the band expects of its listeners: this a serious, introspective album.

The LP begins painting its immersive, post-rock soundscapes in “Keep It Healthy.” Reminiscent of the crashing kick drum and understated reverb of DIIV or MBV, the track crescendos in “Love Is To Die.” Like the album itself, Warpaint’s lyrics are contradictory. “Love is to die/ Love is to not die” Kokal croons over a glossy and refined refrain.

The rich, nocturnal fourth track “Hi” announces a transition from Warpaint’s shoegaze comfort zone to a hazy synth, like the downtempo outfit Portishead. Unfortunately, it follows the album’s emotional beginning with little more than a lifeless blob of base lines and vocal reverb.

As the album drags on, it gets more and more repetitive, soon enterPeople eat tapas to get nutrients, to process the food better, and to eat quality food. But what about the ability of tapas and other traditional restaurants to spread an appreciation for different aspects of culture from around the world? Just take a stroll down M street and find wholesome American burgers at Good Eats, delicious Thai food at Bangkok Joe’s, and Ethiopian cuisine at Das. Just as burgers, shrimp dumplings, and wot are part of the global cuisine, so too now are tapas.

And as we enrich and add to the global cuisine, we are enriched as a global community. Is it not a benefit of globalization that we are able to appreciate the best aspects of every culture that exists in the world?

Looking at Jaleo’s menu, you may want to bring a map of Spain. Each tapas dish is traditional to a specific region, showing aspects of their cultural heritage that would otherwise

ing the realm of monotony. Bizarrely, its eighth track, “Go In,” takes an industrial turn. These weird, ineffective forays into various tangential subgenres are futile. Rather than bolstering Kokal’s compelling and mysterious vocals, the genre-hopping makes her sound little more than whiny.

Despite this, Warpaint ends on an ostensible high note with the baleful ballad “Son.” Its vocals are moving and weather-beaten. But, as if expecting mixed reviews, Kokal uses the track to declare, “[you] can’t hear anyone tell you what you like.”

This childish lyric doesn’t save the album, though, particularly on account of a melodic disunity between Kokal and guitarist Theresa Wayman.

The attitude voiced here instead contributes to the general monotony that surrounds the work.

Warpaint feels like the rough draft for an exceptional album, echoing Kokal’s apology in its first few seconds.

The somnolent soundscapes could be comforting for a walk back from Lau in the dead of winter. But, on the whole, Warpaint feels unmoored, lost in its own dark and stormy sea.

From the cradle to the College, a Georgetown boy for life

by Chris Almeida I was born under the red and blue of my father’s University of Pennsylvania, but I spent much of my childhood running around the halls of Old North.

A lot of students love Georgetown. A few can’t stand their time on the Hilltop. I usually find myself moving between both extremes.

For the same reasons that most people are afraid to room with their best friend from high school, I was hesitant to come to Georgetown.

Most people travel at least a few hours to come to school each semester. Me? If I was determined enough, I could probably walk home in under an hour. When my Dad took a job at Georgetown 18 years ago, my family moved from Philadelphia to Rosslyn. Since then, the Almeida clan has moved a bit further into the suburbs of Arlington, but that didn’t keep me from spending an ample amount of time on campus. I went to Mass at

Dahlgren as a toddler, singing loudly and harassing the organist. My first summer job was here. My Saturday morning trips to Chinatown to see Hoya basketball started when our beloved Phonebooth was still called the MCI Center.

I’d be lying to you if I said that I hated going to school 20 minutes from my house. I can’t despise all I’ve ever known. When considering colleges, it seems like many people want to go as far away as possible.

This isn’t a sentiment that I share.

I have no innate hatred of seeing my parents, but there was a time when the prospect of living in the same place I’d visited on weekends throughout grade school didn’t sound like an appealing concept.

I applied to a handful of schools, no others within at least a two hour drive, but it eventually became clear that enrolling at Georgetown was the option through which I would receive the best education and, thanks to tuition benefits, have the

least financially crippling four years.

Even though I’m from just across the Potomac, I am further from my high school life than almost every one of my former classmates. To my knowledge, I am one of two students from Yorktown High School who are currently Hoyas. For most students in Northern Virginia, it makes little sense to leave the state when a great education is available for a fraction of the cost at the Commonwealth’s top schools. So, while all of my friends at UVA, William and Mary, or Virginia Tech rarely make a trip across campus without seeing somebody from Arlington, the exact opposite is true for me. Here, it’s an accomplishment to find somebody else who went to public high school, much less anybody from my area. It feels like most students come from The Suchandsuch Catholic Academy in New Jersey, which sends half of its entire graduating class to Georgetown each year.

In my earlier years, surrounded by students aspiring to attend Virginia schools or the Ivy League, I felt unique wearing the blue and gray.

Now, being a local, I again stand in stark contrast to my classmates. It’s strange living in a place you know so well, while still feeling out of place.

Most college students, or so it seems, either express burning passion when talking about their schools or disdain so strong that it forced them to transfer, with no ground in-between. I’m not quite sure what I think about my school. There are always high points and low points.

I’m always asking myself, “Would things be better somewhere else?” or, “Am I just an ungrateful kid living in the best of all possible worlds?”

It wouldn’t be accurate to say that being a Hoya is a dream come true for me. At times, I have my fair share of qualms about Georgetown— its location, its culture, and its sparse breaks—but being a Hoya is, and has always been, more a part of my identi-

ty than anything but my family name.

So, while on occasion it may upset me that I see less of my high school friends than my Virginia brethren or that I’m not experiencing school in New York or Palo Alto, I understand that everything here that I can’t stand doubles as something I love.

Most people associate their undergraduate school with the best four years of their life, but Georgetown has been inseparable with my first two decades. If you asked me what I thought about Georgetown, I wouldn’t be able to give you any kind of definitive answer. But if I ever leave the D.C. area, when I think of my journey from 2 to 22, the first thing to come to mind will be the Hilltop in the entirety of its dichotomous glory.

lure for me. For most of my adolescent life, sex saturated my religious education. On almost a daily basis my teachers would share interesting sex survival skills with my classmates and I that were essential for the formation of upstanding Christian teenagers. For example, ladies, did you know that you will become allergic to the sperm of any other man than the first one you had sex with? Well, that’s the gospel truth, so you best close those legs tight.

Looking back, it seems hard to believe that I ever believed statements like that, but how

was I to know any better? My eighth grade science teacher literally ripped the reproduction chapter out of my text book. In fact, my formal sex education in middle school consisted of nothing more than a half-day chat with my school principal, whose qualifications to teach sex-ed didn’t extend much further than her sense of moral highground.

She started by placing the girls and boys in separate classrooms just to ensure that she could customize her education sessions according to proper gender roles. She then played a video of a zealous woman who declared that no excuse existed that could justify premarital sex and that women who engaged in premarital sex might as well have “whore” tattooed on their foreheads. The day concluded with a good, old-fashioned scare session filled with tales of the woe that befell those foolish enough to jump the gun and take a roll in the hay without a priest’s permission. She definitely learned me.

After being educated in this environment, by the time I entered high school I was sex-obsessed.

According to what I’d been taught in school, once sex came into my life, my former, pure self would die, replaced by a lesser being.

I lived in constant fear of defilement, and I took solace in the fact that, as long as I remained a vir-

gin before I got married, I retained value in God’s eyes.

Catholic grade schools need to realize that their scare tactics are not only ineffective in preventing premarital sex, but create an unhealthy relationship between young people and their own sexuality and leave them miserably unprepared to function in our sexualized society.

Catholic sexual ethics do not in themselves damage adolescents’ understandings of sex and sexuality. That being said, Catholic views of sexuality and sexual education are not the same, and these topics need to exist separately in Catholic schools. Catholic sexual ethics tie sex to spirituality and to religious practice, but faith should not be the only factor that informs an individual’s understanding of sex.

While Catholicism’s teaching that sex is a gift from God reserved for “the goods of marriage and the flourishing of family life” is central to Catholic understanding of sexual morality, this idea does not constitute sex education. The fact remains that, if you have unprotected sex, you can contract a whole slew of STDs or become pregnant unexpectedly. These realities hold true for Christians and non-Christians alike and, by omitting this type of education from the classroom to ensure seamless indoctrination, Catho-

lic educators have done a great disservice to their students.

If Catholic educators feel that the presentation of the facts of sex pose a threat to sexual morality, perhaps Catholic sexual ethics are not worth defending.

Excluding facts in order to serve your own purposes is lying by omission and ,the last time I checked, bearing false witness ranks right up there in the top ten Catholic no-no’s.

It took me years to recover from my middle school experience and it actually wasn’t until I had sex for the first time that I understood sex does not change who I am. I don’t dispute that sex is a powerful expression of emotion between two individuals, but an individual’s decision to engage in sex does not determine his or her value as a human.

Thankfully, my relationship with sex has developed enough that I can see myself beyond my sexuallity, and I have moved beyond the damage of my grade school years.

Back in high school when I looked in the mirror, I saw a virgin and I clung to her. Now I see a woman and, goddamn, I am hot.

Another glam rock casualty darkens today’s musical horizons

by Steven Criss Every Friday night, my Village B apartment begins to shake around 9:30 p.m., and it continues to pulsate deep into the night, usually quitting around three or so in the morning as I’m hopping into bed after some reading or writing for this esteemed paper. I have come to understand that this is a normal part of college life because most students just cannot seem to survive without pumping dub step or hip hop while they force the stresses of the previous week away. Footsteps pounding up the steps with random screams of inco-

herent chatter overlay the pumping of what they would probably call music that penetrates the thin walls around me.

The next morning I may make a brave walk to a nearby coffee shop to start Saturday morning off slowly.

Too many times I am flooded with frustration as I hear some pompous kid in a beanie and non-prescription glasses start expounding on exquisite acoustic guitar sounds and softly sweet vocals that ease over the low bumbling of the drum beat on this new indie album he found. I like big books and I cannot lie

Georgetown students read so much that we end up doing hardly any reading at all. Most classes at Georgetown pack a tremendous number of pages into their syllabi.

And they should. Having a solid grasp on our subjects’ literature is vital to sucking all the marrow out of our studies. But all this academic reading gets in the way of cracking open books for pleasure.

There’s a problem when our rickety dorm-furniture shelves only hold books found on our syllabi.

Before college, I was a voracious reader. I accompanied Nancy Drew on every single one of her mystery-solving adventures. Later, Eragon catapulted me into a world of dragons and Skybreaker plunged

me into an alternate universe. In eighth grade, I grossed out friends as I graphically recounted the horrors of Fast Food Nation and The Jungle while they ate lunch. In high school, poetry transformed, from barely tolerable to refreshingly enjoyable.

And then came Georgetown.

Slowly but surely, my first question upon seeing someone with an interesting looking book was no longer “What’s it about?” but instead, “What class is it for?”

It seemed obvious that coursework was the only kind of reading being done on campus. Even when it was 78 degrees and people lounged in bikinis on Healy Lawn, they were poring over thick vol-

claims that this revolution in indie rock will change how you feel about life. Oh, and also how you feel about your inner self too, bro.

Don’t even dare say that today’s experimental indie recording artists are low quality and unimaginative, because if you do, then you obviously are not intellectual enough to comprehend the avant-garde magnificence of these lyrical trailblazers.

Is there anyone else who wonders what in the world a person would do at one of their concerts? Drink warm milk and discuss serif fonts, possibly.

The world wasn’t like this before.

There was once a time when guys with feathered hair flowing past their shoulders in ripped jeans and leather vests would jump up on a stage and rip on a guitar while pushing their vocal chords to their absolute limits for the sake of turning an audience into a rock n’ roll-induced riot. Day by day we move farther and farther away from the age of hard rock and hair metal.

When I look through my parents’ old pictures of the rebellious life of the 1980’s I have no choice but to laugh. It’s an immediate reaction when I see the poofy hair and flamboyantly fluorescent-colored shorts that dominated the era, but there is still a part of me that pangs with

the feeling of opportunities never received. It has occurred to me that the days of true musical entertainment has surely passed us by.

I have very little hope in any kind of musical revolution that will turn the current course of modern music around and away from the heavily synthetic and digitally-altered sound that is utterly inescapable no matter where you run off to.

The hard rock and hair metal bands of the eighties endure a mountain of flak for their objectification of women and profuse abuse of narcotics but what is so misunderstood is that they provided the most purely entertaining musical scene the music world has experienced.

It is especially clear that the climax of musical entertainment is behind us whenever we are reminded of just how old these once-mighty rock stars are. Earlier this week, the eighties heavy metal legends Mötley Crüe announced that they will be making one more run at a global tour before calling it quits after over thirty years of screaming guitar solos, black leather, and infamous flow. Vince Neil’s soaring high notes and Mick Mars’ heavy licks defined a generation of rebelling against the institutional man that can only be passed on through tales of concerts from back in the day.

Thoughtful dialogue doesn’t need

After slacking off from pleasure reading for most of freshman and sophomore year, it took a friend to remind me why I needed to make time for books outside of classes. In his Village A, I nosily leafed through the volumes on a shelf in his living room, suddenly realizing that all forty or so were checked out from Lau. There didn’t seem to be much of a pattern—lots of classics, some biographies, and war poems—so I assumed he must have been writing a thesis to warrant checking out so many books. But he wasn’t.

I later found out that he would spend his afternoons wandering around Lau, plucking interesting books off the shelves and checking every single one of them out.

All we have to show for rebellious expression today in the musical arts are a bunch of bands who think that rebellion means the obscurely warped guitar sets and squeaky vocals of Vampire Weekend or Kanye West “rapping” about his sexual escapades. The passing of this titan makes the days I can only picture in my imagination drift even farther into the abyss of musical history. There’s only so much that a pair of good headphones and maxed out volume can recreate. Maybe one of these days, my apartment will start shaking at 9:30 p.m. with the hammering of an electric guitar solo. Maybe one of these days, music will take one last shot at returning to its former greatness. Maybe I should keep growing my hair out just in case these hopes turn to reality—but really, who am I kidding.

Though it’s generally good mental health advice to stay as far away from our Brutalist monster of a library as possible, the next time you find yourself there, go ahead and wander the shelves. Let a book catch your eye. Check it out.

If you don’t go to Lau on a regular basis, you can try your hand at my favorite drinking game, “big book, little book.” When you’re headed back from a party, instead of going straight to your dorm, corral all your friends into the library.

The objective is simple: whoever can find the biggest book in Lau and bring it back to the second floor wins the round. You can repeat the game with other iterations: littlest book, raunchiest book, most ridiculously irrelevant book. While you’re stumbling through the Spanish poetry section (fifth floor, excellent for finding small books), you might just find something you want to read in your free time.

Just imagine taking a cold shower for an hour and a half and think about how cold you would get ... and that was after climbing four miles and expending all our energy to get up there. We all had to crouch in lightning position, which is basically to make your body as small as possible and wait in the rain until the lightning passed. ... It ended up being worth it because we eventually found the shelter and really bonded over the experience. And, I had to make sure that the kids got as many calories as I could because they had just spent so much energy just climbing and trying to stay warm so we had some fun with that at the shelter. ... I actually had a bottle of maple syrup that I brought with me and pulled it out, took a swig, and passed it around and made everyone take syrup shots. ... The trips are great because you really get to see people open up through experiences like these.”
