Outreach News Session for Teachers: “Learning and Teaching about the Arab World and Islam” A group of about 45 teachers from a number of schools in Maryland visited CCAS on February 9, 2011 for a session with Director of Educational Outreach Zeina Azzam Seikaly. She offered background information on teaching about the Arab world, the Arabic language, and Islam, and covered such topics as Arab-Americans and American Muslims; stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims in American popular culture; how to teach about sensitive issues such as religion and political conflict; and literary works that are appropriate for the classroom.

Mini-workshop: “Addressing Islamophobia Through Film and Dialogue”

Speaker’s Bureau: Master of Arts in Arab Studies Students Speak at Area Schools Over the last few months, six students from CCAS’s M.A. in Arab Studies (MAAS) program tackled several Middle East subjects at local schools. In October and November a group of four (Kimberly MacVaugh, Zachary Foster, Jonathan Rose, and Nour Joudah) visited Washington International School to speak about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, covering topics including the Palestinian diaspora since 1947, the Suez crisis, Camp David and the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement, and the current situation. In November, Anny Gaul volunteered to speak on Morocco to a group from the African and American Women’s Association. She showed pictures from her experience with Peace Corps in the country and discussed the history, culture, society, and religion of Morocco. Nour Joudah also spoke to three ninth grade global studies classes at Georgetown Day School in March about the history of Libya and the current revolution. During the same month, Nada Ramadan participated in a panel discussion with teachers and parents at Stone Ridge School on the subject of Islamophobia.
