A Match Made in Georgetown During freshman orientation I remember the speech given to all the first year students. It was said that we would likely meet forever friends and the love of our life right here in these residence halls. Well that couldn’t have been more true for me and my wife Jamie. As a freshman I came into college with a different mindset than most 18 year olds. Like everyone, I was eager to make new friends and have a good time, but unlike everyone, I had my eyes set on finding the future Mrs. Collier from the very minute I stepped onto campus. As we settled into the semester, I noticed early on that there was this one girl who seemed to stand out from the rest. There was only one problem…she was a senior! I am naturally optimistic and ambitious, plus, we had a mutual friend that kept introducing us, but Jamie didn’t seem interested in dating a freshmen. So, while she was still part of a larger friend group, I put her at the back of my mind. As the weeks went by, I came to the revelation that I was trying too hard to find a relationship. I remember getting down on my knees beside my bed in Anderson Hall and saying a prayer that went something like this, “Lord, I feel like I’m ready for a relationship, but I’m going to stop seeking it out, and I’ll wait for you to bring forth the opportunity.” It’s amazing how quickly that prayer was answered, because not even a week later, that same mutual friend approached me and asked if I was interested in Jamie. After giving him an obvious yes, he made it his mission to convince Jamie that age was nothing but a number. After small subtle approaches, including placing letters in her campus mailbox, we had our break through at a NEXUS event. So if your student complains about having to

attend NEXUS events, just remind him or her that something wonderful could happen at one of these gatherings. I invited her to a play our class was required to go to, and during the course of the play, we exchanged phone numbers.
