A Match Made in Georgetown During freshman orientation I remember the speech given to all the first year students. It was said that we would likely meet forever friends and the love of our life right here in these residence halls. Well that couldn’t have been more true for me and my wife Jamie.

As a freshman I came into college with a different mindset than most 18 year olds. Like everyone, I was eager to make new friends and have a good time, but unlike everyone, I had my eyes set on finding the future Mrs. Collier from the very minute I stepped onto campus. As we settled into the semester, I noticed early on that there was this one girl who seemed to stand out from the rest. There was only one problem…she was a senior! I am naturally optimistic and ambitious, plus, we had a mutual friend that kept introducing us, but Jamie didn’t seem interested in dating a freshmen. So, while she was still part of a larger friend group, I put her at the back of my mind.

As the weeks went by, I came to the revelation that I was trying too hard to find a relationship. I remember getting down on my knees beside my bed in Anderson Hall and saying a prayer that went something like this, “Lord, I feel like I’m ready for a relationship, but I’m going to stop seeking it out, and I’ll wait for you to bring forth the opportunity.”

It’s amazing how quickly that prayer was answered, because not even a week later, that same mutual friend approached me and asked if I was interested in Jamie. After giving him an obvious yes, he made it his mission to convince Jamie that age was nothing but a number.

attend NEXUS events, just remind him or her that something wonderful could happen at one of these gatherings. I invited her to a play our class was required to go to, and during the course of the play, we exchanged phone numbers. The rest is history, and since that moment, she’s been a part of life every day.

Life on Campus The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is happy to help campus celebrate Black History Month.

This month we are offering multiple opportunities for students to learn about Black History and about Black culture. Students had a chance to hear speakers of color talk about faith, read poetry, discuss social justice and much more. We are working with many individuals across campus and an awesome group of student leaders to provide events that celebrate Black history and educate the campus community about the history and way of life of our African American student population.

Our goal is to create a place of belonging for all members of our campus community. We work

towards that goal in everything we do.

Educating our community about marginalized and minority groups, providing spaces for community members to hear new ideas and viewpoints and, supporting every member of our community are things we do every month of the year, but Black History Month allows us a time to highlight one part of our population.

Georgetown College has a long history and we are working to ensure that our future is one that supports and uplifts a diverse student body and creates well rounded future leaders.

Academic Success & Your Student The GC Writing Center: Providing Support for Academic Writing The Georgetown College Writing Center is a valuable, free resource for all Georgetown College students. Our mission is to help writers improve by supporting them throughout the writing process. In doing so, qualified peer tutors approach each tutorial holistically, focusing first on higher-order concerns of meaning and organization, as they work with students in a one-on-one setting with the goal of supporting students in their growth as academic writers.

Staffed by trained undergraduate students, the Writing Center welcomes students from any level and for any course to discuss their writing assignments with experienced tutors.

Typically, tutorials last approximately thirty minutes, and during the tutorial, students share their writing with a tutor, discuss their ideas or questions, and consider feedback for revision. This process, of engaging with qualified peer tutors, is a great step for students looking to improve their writing skills, fluency, and confidence, as well as their understanding of various academic writing tasks. In addition, students at any skill level benefit from the extra set of eyes tutors can bring to a paper, which can prove especially useful in helping students consider various audience perspectives as well as in sharpening their revision and editing skills. Whether looking for support with brainstorming topics or editing a final draft, students benefit from working with an experienced tutor at any stage of the writing process.

The Writing Center is conveniently located in the Ensor Learning Resource Center, room 016.

To make an appointment, students may call the Writing Center at 8423 during normal hours of operation, or they can make an appointment via GConnect. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The theme of food, faith, and community was explored by scholars, environmentalists, and student researchers when the Georgetown College Center for Christian Discernment presented the “For the Beauty of the Earth” conference on campus Feb. 1-2, 2018.

Spring Fever Events Tue, March 27: Chapel Service

The conference objective was to focus on the shared character of human life and its dependence on basic sustenance in terms of food and its production as well as the connection to communities of faith that have traditionally gathered around food production and sharing. Featured speakers were Norman Wirzba, Professor of Theology and Ecology at Duke Divinity School, and Mary Berry, founder and Executive Director of The Berry Center, Newcastle, Ky. They discussed faithful stewardship of the environment necessary for good food and the fair distribution of food necessary for justice.

Dr. Wirzba pursues research and teaching interests at the intersections of theology, philosophy, ecology, and agrarian and environmental studies. He lectures frequently in Canada and the United States and is a published author. His work focuses on understanding and promoting practices that can equip both rural and urban church communities to be more faithful and responsible members of creation. Current research is centered on a recovery of the doctrine of creation and a restatement of humanity in terms of its creaturely life. Dr. Wirzba was a Georgetown College Professor of Philosophy from 1995-2008. .

Mary Berry is the daughter of Wendell and Tanya Berry. She grew up on the family’s Lanes Landing Farm in Henry County, Kentucky. She started out in dairy farming and growing Burley tobacco, later diversifying to organic vegetables, pastured poultry, and grass fed beef.. Berry speaks all over the country as a proponent of agriculture, particularly in defense of small farmers, and in the hope of restoring a culture and an economy that has been lost in rural America. Her essays are included in recently published books.. Dr. Wirzba’s lecture was entitled, “The Moral and Spiritual Significance of Eating.” Ms. Berry’s keynote lecture was entitled, “The Work of the Berry Center and Its Importance for Land Use Questions.” .

In conjunction with the conference, students were invited to submit research and artistic interpretations on the theme categories. A cash prize was awarded in each and presented at the conclusion of Ms. Berry’s presentation.

Leadership on Campus While maintaining the legacy of Bishop College, the Revival brings a cultural richness to the campus and community that continues to celebrate the partnership of Georgetown College and Bishop College! Sponsored by Georgetown College’s Bishop Scholars Program, the annual event is an uplifting commemoration of the partnership between Georgetown and the alumni of Bishop College. The 8th consecutive Bishop College Revival is scheduled for April 9-12, 2018 at Consolidated Baptist Church in Lexington, KY where Rev. Richard Gaines is Senior Pastor. Rev. Gaines is a longtime friend and former Board of Trustee member of the College. Hosting the Revival at Consolidated Baptist, was a change made to give more exposure to The Bishop Scholars Program and Georgetown College. Bishop College Scholars are students who are descended from or recommended by Bishop Alumni and who receive a scholarship to Georgetown College. The program began in 2007.

This year’s theme is “Journey of Leadership: In His Excellence.” Scripture text: Isaiah 12:5. The speakers are four outstanding pastors, all graduates of the historically black Baptist Bishop College which closed its doors more than two decades ago in Texas. Services with special music from local college choirs are scheduled for each of the four evenings beginning at 7:00pm. Speakers this year include: Rev. Dr. David Wade, Mesa, AZ; Rev. Dr. Stephen Thurston, Chicago, IL; Rev. Dr. Denny Davis, Grand Prairie, TX; and Rev. Dr. Ralph D. West, Houston, TX.
