Outstanding Student Leaders .

On April 24, 2018 Georgetown College honored students at the Outstanding Student Leadership Award Banquet. To be considered for the award, they must be a graduating senior with an outstanding record of involvement at Georgetown College and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Nominees are students who have influenced the Georgetown College Community, made a lasting impact, and are great role models for the other students on campus.

Georgetown College staff members, faculty members, or peers can nominate students for this award. This year’s winners of the Outstanding Student Leadership Award were Nico De Villalobos Paz and Allison Card.

Nico De Villalobos has been a member of Residence Life for three years serving as a Resident Assistant for one year and a Resident Director for two years. Nico has also been involved with the JV Basketball team, the Spanish Immersion Program, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society , and Sigma Delta Pi Hispanic Honor Society.

Allison Card has been an active leader serving in the Awaken Love ministry group, volunteering to lead the National Day of Prayer event, and creating other campus programs to minister to students. Allison has also been a member of Residence Life for two years as a Resident Assistant.

First day of classes for the 2018-2019 school year will be Monday, August 20!

A Note from Faith & Service On Saturday, March 10, 2018 a group of 28 Georgetonians (including 24 students) journeyed to Orange Beach, AL for an Alternative Spring Break trip that was part service and missions work and part retreat.

After arriving Saturday night, on Sunday morning several student participants led Romar Beach Baptist Church (our hosts) in worship and I (Bryan) preached the sermon.

What a blessing it was to help lead worship in a sanctuary that looked out over the Gulf of Mexico!

While there was plenty of rest on this trip, it was not all relaxation and sleeping in. Students served for three days in a community they had never stepped foot in before. But there was no complaining. Students painted a missions

house, walked and cleaned up the shores with large trash bags, and helped move furniture for a church that had suffered a massive fire last year. On Wednesday night, we led a worship time at a local state R.V. park. We also enjoyed a campfire and making S’mores with the campers who attended.

Probably the sweetest impact of all, though, was not on anyone we served down there, but on ourselves. On Friday morning, our team headed down to the Gulf and watched as four students demonstrated their faith in God and were baptized in the salty waters of the Gulf. It was a beautiful culmination to a week of unity, service and growth in the Lord.

As we enter into the end of the spring 2018 semester, your students are starting to worry about their final projects, assignments, and finals. They may reach out to you for help in this trying and busy time and you might not always have the answer. Do not worry – we do. .

If your student needs help with finding resources for a paper, we can help with that. If your student needs to know how to complete an assignment that requires proper citation, we can help with that. If your student just needs a quiet place to study, we can help with that as well. .

A college campus in spring is one of my favorite places. Trees are blooming, the spring weather is setting in and students are working toward final exams. Unfortunately, this also means that we will be losing great students as they graduate and move on in their lives after Georgetown College. One of this year’s graduates is someone I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know over her four years at GC. Ericka Conley came to GC in the fall of 2014. Quickly, Ericka became involved in many leadership opportunities on campus. From the beginning, Ericka gravitated toward roles where she could help incoming and new students successfully transition to life at GC.

For three years, Ericka was instrumental in GC’s New Student Orientation programs as an Orientation Leader and a Peer Educator. She furthered her love of helping students as an Orientation Coordinator for two years. I was always amazed at Ericka’s ability to juggle multiple tasks while also keeping an eye out for students who were facing challenges as they began their college careers. As I’ve gotten to know Ericka more, I know that she was not just performing the duties of her role, but she truly cared about making sure each new student felt like a part of the GC family.

Her care for other students did not stop after orientation. Ericka has served on the Georgetown Activities Council (GAC) and has helped to plan events to enrich the lives of all GC students. She has volunteered for the Children’s Miracle Network, the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office of Victim Advocacy and the Georgetown Police Department’s Victims Advocacy program. Ericka had a direct hand in creating a resource guide for victims of sexual and domestic abuse during her time with the Attorney General’s office. Her work with the Georgetown Police Department has also allowed her to work with victims of violent crimes to connect them with the appropriate resources in the community and support them through a difficult time in their lives.

After graduation, Ericka plans to attend the University of Alabama to pursue to a Master’s degree in Social Work. When I asked Ericka why she chose this program she told me that she wants to “change the world.” Ericka attributes her success to Dr. Jennifer Price, as well as the Psychology Department, as a whole. She also told me that her internships with the Kentucky AG and the Georgetown Police Department opened her eyes to a societal issue that she is passionate about.

If any student I have known during my time at Georgetown could change the world, it’s Ericka. She is resilient, dependable, and passionate about the work she does. While her graduation will be bittersweet, I cannot wait to see what she does next and what change she inspires in our state and beyond. .

Reasons to Visit the Career Center Among the national class of 2017, 85.6 percent of students who had begun a job search had visited their college’s career center at least once in the past academic year (NACE 2017 Student Survey). Georgetown College is doing everything we can to ensure our students receive quality career services through our individual appointments. We reach additional students via classroom presentations, programs and career fairs and group mock interview days. While statistically we tend to fall below the national average, but we know that this is in part because we benefit from being a small liberal arts college with a 14:1 student to faculty ratio, creating strong relationships across all departments that allow for quality conversations and discussions of careers. The college understands that we ALL are here to support student career exploration.

Still, the Graves Center can provide your student with additional resources beyond these conversations, giving your student an edge in the job or graduate/professional school search process. We have greater success in assisting students who have visited the Graves Center early and often, beginning in their first year. The better we know your student, the better we can serve them and the more likely we are to be able to make connections and provide references to our alumni and professional network.

Seniors typically come to us for assistance with their application materials (resumes, cover letters or personal statements) for their job search or graduate/professional school applications. We also provide guidance on how to best approach a job search and how to utilize your network and manage your contacts and social media using tools such as LinkedIn. We also provide input on interviewing skills and conduct mock interviews to provide your student with the practice they will need to ace their job or graduate school interview process.

Often recognized as the place to go for the job search, the Graves Center also offers services and programming that will aid your student in determining a good career fit for their talents and interests so they will be prepared and focused in their job or postgraduate education search. We offer targeted assessments and coaching to assist a student in determining careers of interest and connect them to professionals in their field of interest to continue their exploration through informational interviewing, job shadowing, internships and part-time jobs. We also host a variety of workshops and fairs that further support their exploration and networking.

Outside of meeting with us in person, we also encourage students to connect with the Graves Center via our online tools, including career assessments (TypeFocus), exploring and researching careers (Vault) and searching for employment opportunities through Tiger Net. Students can access these resources through the GC Portal via the Graves Center for Calling and Career department page.
