ON THE COVER
The original watercolor Through the Woods was painted by Ranulph Bye P’70, ’73 and gifted by the artist to George School in memory of Ellen L. Passmore ’65. Ranulph was the son of A.E. Bye, Class of 1904. In a remarkable George School moment, Ranulph’s nephew Randy Bye P’05, ’08 took the photo of the painting used for this cover.
DEAR FRIENDS,
Walking to meeting for worship, socializing on Red Square, looking out on South Lawn—on this beautiful campus, we are surrounded by symbols of George School’s legacy as a given place. For almost 130 years, our campus—and our mission—has been shaped by generations of individuals committed to sustaining this remarkable community.
Our warmest thanks to all of you who chose to extend this legacy by giving to the school in the past year. Your commitment serves as an important reminder to our students, faculty, and staff that they participate in something much larger than themselves.
Over the last year, our students distinguished themselves in science and math, in the arts, and in athletics. Perhaps most importantly, they sincerely invested in rebuilding the George School community. And they moved forward into the larger world having gained the ability to treasure learning, embrace citizenship, and eagerly contribute to a global community that will benefit from their unique perspectives.
Bolstered by your support, our faculty are instrumental in these achievements. Modeling lifelong learning and thoughtful risktaking, over the last year George School faculty have developed and implemented our Signature Academic Program, affording students opportunities to explore their own academic interests in greater depth while still receiving a first-rate college preparatory education.
We are grateful for your active participation in fulfilling our mission. Your support strengthens the culture and academic quality of George School every day. Thank you.
In friendship,

With Quaker tradition as its touchstone and academic excellence at its core
A personal greeting from Tom Hoopes ’83 P’19, ’20 before meeting for worship. Being challenged in the lab, on the stage, and in the classroom. An evening study session in the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library. Each day—and each space—is a reminder of the distinctive Quaker approach to education and the legacy of George School as a given place.

Gifts to the George School Fund for athletics generously provided by friends like Carol Powell Heller ’71 support the education that happens through coaching, team dynamics, and testing of physical limits. Participation in athletics at George School provides lessons and friendships that stretch far beyond high school.

To service and peace, and to the faithful stewardship of the earth
Deeply embedded in the culture of the George School community and generously supported by gifts to the George School Fund and Curricular Development Funds, opportunities to serve on campus and beyond, to pursue learning outside of the classroom, and to develop practices of mindfulness and quietude contribute to the unique experience that is a George School education.

Above all, we want them to “let their lives speak.”
“ Grateful for George School’s gentle touch, we are inspired to look over our shoulders to those who are coming behind us and ensure that they, too, can experience the spirit, the warmth, and the support we did. Giving to George School allows us to let our lives speak as a chorus.”

John M. George (1802–1887), for whom George School is named, was a strong and vigorous farmer. The sole survivor of a wealthy Hicksite family of six siblings who never married, John chose to will the bulk of his estate to the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite) for the purpose of establishing a Quaker boarding school. In 1993, George School pays tribute to its founding donor by establishing the John M. George Society, which honors individuals who provide for the school in their wills or estate plans.
John M. George Society
THE JOHN M. GEORGE SOCIETY recognizes and honors alumni, parents, and friends who remember George School in their will or estate plans and who have informed the school of this commitment. If you are not already a member, we invite you to join the John M. George Society by including George School as a beneficiary of your will or trust or by establishing a life income gift.
When you make a planned gift to George School, your generosity has an impact far beyond your lifetime. Your gift supports generations of students whose lives will be forever changed by their George School experience.

Supporting Financial Aid for George School Students
A George School education wouldn’t be nearly as amazing were it not for the bright, talented, and diverse students we attract and enroll thanks in part to the school’s robust financial aid. One important part of that financial aid budget comes from an unlikely source— the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Through a group of related programs, individuals and businesses who owe Pennsylvania state taxes can contribute to tuition assistance at George School and receive a tax credit for up to 90 percent of their contribution. Donated funds are earmarked for Pennsylvania students with demonstrated need.
In 2021, donors contributed over $200,000 in financial assistance to George School students through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs as well as through the Friends Collaborative, a Special Purpose Entity.
We are grateful to these donors and welcome others to join them by putting their Pennsylvania taxes to work for future George School students. It’s easy and only costs a dime to give a dollar.
Contact Chris Jackiewicz at cjackiewicz@georgeschool.org or call 215.579.6572 for more information.

SHARED VALUES AND A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
When searching for a boarding school for their son, the diversity of the community was a top priority for Natalie and Andrew Otoo P’25. Having raised their children across North America, Europe, and Asia, they sought a school that could continue cultivating their son’s understanding and appreciation of global cultures.
“From the moment he stepped on campus, our son felt at home,” said Natalie. “One of the first things we noticed was the impact that meeting for worship plays in his life. He not only sees it as valuable time for personal reflection, but also as a time to connect and understand the experiences of others around him.”
The Otoo’s believe that knowledge is the cornerstone of global citizenship. “Supporting George School was an easy decision for us because we firmly believe in its mission,” Andrew commented. “The more you understand the
context and culture of people in and beyond your immediate community, the more equipped you are to serve these communities.”
At George School, students immerse themselves in a learning environment where curiosity and compassion collide to create an understanding of the world around them — through its Signature Academic Program, diverse student body, and service-learning opportunities, both domestic and international.
For the Otoos, giving to the George School Fund is about providing opportunities to others. “Being part of a ‘given place’ inspires members of our community to give in any way that they can,” Natalie explained. “For some, it is their time. For others, it is their resources. Nothing can compare to the sense of community that George School creates. When you invest in your community, you improve the outcomes of those who live in it.”

“ Let George School absorb you, lean into everything George School provides and take part. Have fun and enjoy it. You are never going to experience a place like George School again.”
NATALIE HOWLETTE ’22
“ Being treated by teachers as equals, learning the value of not showing off, of caring for others, of learning for the joy of learning rather than as a competition, all formed me in ways I wasn’t even aware of at the time.
George School continues to be an important place to me.” N. WEST MOSS ’82

SUSTAINING GENERATIONS OF GEORGE SCHOOL STUDENTS
For Betty Mae Siegel, it was important to encourage her childrens’ curiosity and to illustrate that learning isn’t just academic — it also comes from interactions with others.
“Being open-minded, honest, and kind are necessary traits for living in the world, where we are all entitled to thrive,” said Betty Mae. Those concerns are part of what drew their son, Lee Siegel ’81, to George School.
Lee immediately embraced the George School community, making friends, running cross country, and becoming an involved student. A member of the Jewish faith, Lee enjoyed meeting for worship. At home on school breaks, he would share his school experiences, engendering thought-provoking discussions at the family dinner table.
“Lee was always a good listener, which is critical for learning,” remembers Betty Mae. “But
at George School, he was encouraged to question and offer his opinions, which augmented his intellectual growth.”
After Lee passed away in 2019, Betty Mae contacted the school to establish a scholarship in his name.
“George School made a big difference in my son’s life,” she said, “and I hope this gift, in his memory, will do the same for others.”
The Lee Howard Siegel ’81 Scholarship Fund provides meaningful tuition assistance to qualified students who may not otherwise be able to attend George School.
“My wish for George School is that it continues to sustain new generations of students who listen to others, embrace differences, and create a world they are proud to live in for years to come,” Betty Mae said. “And I know Lee would wish the same.”

“
I was lucky enough to go to Tanzania for a servicelearning trip–called work camps back when I was a student at George School. These experiences give students the opportunity to become engaged global citizens. I know George School is already committed to that, but the more experiential learning that can be funded by alumni, the more connected current students will be to the issues they are going to have to face as they grow.”

30 GEORGE SCHOOL
LIFTING UP MENTAL HEALTH
Ashley: I was raised in a Quaker family; my parents believed strongly in Quaker education. George School was the most wonderful place to be a high school student. I began as a day student my first year and then boarded for the following three. I played sports and was involved in theater. I have such glorious memories of wonderful friends and teachers. I came back to campus after college and taught in the Arts and English departments for a couple
of years, and I’ve recently joined the Board of Trustees. George School has been a constant in my life.
Caroline: It is a remarkable community. I came to George School from Northern Virginia, and arrived here shortly before the pandemic. This is my fourth year working here, but my husband and I just moved to campus this year. We have a baby on the way and we feel so fortunate to bring our baby into this place that is special to us.
Ashley: Congratulations! You are likely well-prepared for sleepless nights after working with students in all different time zones during the pandemic. I can’t imagine what a heavy lift that was for you as the sole counselor for George School students.
Caroline: It was challenging, but Zoom was a great bridge for us. Being able to speak with students while they were home actually provided wonderful insight into what they were experiencing. We were able to maintain real connections with students even
though some of them were a 12-hour time difference and thousands of miles away.
Ashley: One of the things that drew me to supporting your department at George School was seeing the experiences of my two daughters during that time. Both are strong women, but it was clear that it was a fragile world out there, especially for young people.
Caroline: Yes, it was. Working with our students during the pandemic led me to pursue licensed professional counselor certification. I wanted to gain therapeutic skills to meet the needs of these students and offer the highest quality counseling to them.
Ashley: That’s wonderful. When I spoke with Sam [Houser] and Jaime [Zamparelli Abramov] last year, student mental health was on my mind. As an undergraduate during the pandemic, my younger daughter and a friend co-founded a magazine in college devoted to using art and literature to support other students struggling mentally and emotionally during that period. I was so impressed that they came up with this solution to help both themselves and others. And it was in that conversation that the possibility of supporting counseling services at George School came up.
Caroline: The relief that I have felt professionally has been instantaneous since Alejandra Carranza joined us this year. She’s such a warm person; she has the qualities I’d want in both a counselor and a colleague. An ability to connect with students is priority number one in our profession. Alejandra is able to build quick bonds with students and also brings a wealth of experience, resources, and perspectives to the role.
Ashley: It sounds like she is a perfect fit for this community. And I hope that increasing
the availability of counseling services helps to de-stigmatize mental health. Why is it that we’re comfortable sharing that we see our doctors but ashamed to admit that we see a therapist? It feels important to normalize conversation in this area.
Caroline: We are fortunate that the George School community as a whole is very pro-mental health and encourages sharing emotions. Still, we enroll high-functioning students with ambitious goals and a lot on their plate, so it’s critically important to help them understand that they need to take care of their brains in the same way that they would take care of a sprained ankle. And your support of this work will only help to improve this kind of programming and the services we are able to provide George School students.

32 GEORGE SCHOOL
“ So much of my George School experience was about the community that was created inside and outside of the classroom more so than the substantive education. The environment of valuing every voice is at the core of my leadership and how I have built teams during my career.”

GRATEFUL FOR A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Thinking about traveling halfway across the world for high school is a big decision, but right from the start, George School felt like the right fit for Valarie Cheng ‘24. After hearing about the school from her educational consultant, she and her parents, Arthur Cheng and Vivian Ng, participated in many of the virtual events offered by the admission office. Meeting welcoming staff and friendly students during these events convinced Valarie and her parents that George School would be the best next step in her educational journey.
Arriving on campus from Hong Kong, Valarie quickly learned to thrive in her new environment, and found that George School’s global view and mission matched her perspective and her family’s values.
It is Valarie’s positive experience that has inspired her parents to give to George School. “The unconditional care and love that Valarie and her fellow students have received from the faculty and staff has been remarkable,” Arthur and Vivian shared. They chose to contribute to the George School Fund as a way of expressing their gratitude for everyone who has had a hand in Valarie’s education both in and out of the classroom.
“We cannot thank George School enough for everything that everyone there has done for Valarie and for our family. The George School staff and faculty have contributed so much to make George School feel like a second home for Valarie. We are really blessed for her to be at a place that cares so much for its students.”
