HEAD OF SCHOOL

George School is a given place— established and sustained by those who understand the thoughtful excellence with which we prepare students for lives of purpose. Thank you to those who have supported the school in the past year. Thank you also to our faculty and staff for their inspired commitment to foster growth in our students every day. In turn, our students accept the gift of a George School education and accomplish the most remarkable things.

In a challenging year, George School students won prestigious academic and athletic scholarships and awards and they were actively engaged in social justice and entrepreneurship. We made great strides in athletics, and our students were honored for their achievements in mathematics, filmmaking, creative writing, and chemistry —to name but a few areas.

We are a remarkable community. I am proud of our success, but prouder still that the chief questions that define our truest conception of excellence are: Do students feel challenged and enriched? Are students able to follow their creative and intellectual passions?

Are we preparing students to lead lives that speak?

With this report of gifts, I celebrate George School and the people who nurture and support our vital mission now and for future generations.

As always, thank you.

In friendship, Sam

2020–2021 A YEAR IN REVIEW

By any measure, 2020-2021 was an extraordinary year. Of course, the new ways students learned, studied, ate, played, created, and lived on campus were anything but ordinary, but what makes the year memorable goes beyond COVID. From enrollment to graduation, here are some of the highlights.

Admission

After a successful virtual 2020-2021 admission season, 165 new students from five continents, 18 countries, and 15 states arrived on campus for full in-person learning—the first time in more than a year. This brings the total enrollment to 540 for the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. Among our new students are artists with work hung in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and China’s National Children’s Art Exhibition, a champion birder, a pianist and dancer at Carnegie Hall, and a top-thirty regional ice hockey player in South Korea and a member of the Olympic Development Program in soccer. As always, incoming students add their own distinctive threads to the rich tapestry that is George School.

2 GEORGE SCHOOL

Academics

While dealing with the challenges of a pandemic, GS faculty and administrators embarked on a broad reimagining of the academic program and schedule that has already yielded new courses, more cross-disciplinary learning, and greater flexibility.

George School was named the best private high school in Bucks County, the most diverse private high school in Pennsylvania, and in the top 15 percent of boarding high schools, top 4 percent of private high schools, and top 6 percent of high schools for STEM nationwide in the 2021 Niche rankings.

Thirty students were awarded IB diplomas in 2021, and the school maintained its ten-year 95 percent diploma rate, well above the global average of 89. In addition, George School had thirty-one AP Scholars, twenty-eight AP Scholars with Honors, and twenty-five AP Scholars with Distinction.

David Xi ’21 was named a National Merit Scholar and received a $2,500 award, while Ellen Zhang ’21 was named a National Merit Semifinalist. Seven other seniors—Ryan Bencivengo ’21, Ziyou (Milano) Hu ’21, Siyuan (Justin) Liu ’21, Aniketh Phalcomepely ’21, Jackson Swartz ’21, Ilinca Vilceanu ’21, and Sean Whalen ’21—received National Merit Letters of Commendation. Chris Toala ’21 was named a Hispanic Scholar.

Zhuoxun (Wilson) Chen ’23 qualified for the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad, Ellen Zhang ’21 received the 2021 Akamai AMC 12 B Certificate of Excellence from the Mathematical Association of America for scoring among the top five in her section. The George School Math team was the top Pennsylvania team in the Purple Comet Spring

Competition, placed 14th out of 288 small high schools and 21st out of 884 teams worldwide. The team also captured their third straight first place in the Philadelphia Math League and again excelled in the annual Math Madness competition.

In chemistry, Forest Ho-Chen ’22 and Vinay Thulasiram ’23 scored high enough on the US National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Local Examination to advance to the USNCO National Examination, as did Sicheng (Jimmy) Ding ’23, who was ineligible to advance due to citizenship.

Shelby Williams ’21 received the Certificate of Accomplishment from The Philadelphia Committee of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Pranav Sabapathi ’22 received the Army of One Award after raising nearly $30,000 for The Thirst Project by selling retired Lego sets.

GS students took home sixty Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, including ten Gold Key awards. Elliott Brown ’21 was nominated for an American Voices award for his poem “Ask No Questions, Hear No Lies.” The GS Readers team earned a blue ribbon in the Reading Olympics. Two students, Annika Crawford ’22 and Rhianna Searle ’23, were named runner ups in the Bucks County High School Poet of the Year contest.

Among the faculty, Meredith Baldi ’01 and Scott Seraydarian ’90, co-teachers of the new interdisciplinary course Producing Peace: Civic Media Literacy & Production, earned PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification from KQED.

Arts

Despite COVID, the school managed to mount a number of innovative performances that combined live and virtual artists: the plays The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, Talking With…, Heathers: The Musical, Dance Eclectic, and a winter instrumental concert.

George School was again recognized as an Outstanding Visual Arts Community in 2020 by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association.

Two student films—Healing Justice and Hero for Humanity premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and tied for third place in the Robert F. Kennedy Speak Truth to Power video contest. At the Greenfield Film Festival, Seeger’s Seek of Truth by Eric Guo ’21 and David Xi ’21 earned first place in the Documentary category, Face Your Waste by Eric and Ziekii Oluyede ’21 won first place in the Public Service Announcement category. At the Bridge Film Festival, Seeger’s Seek of Truth and Integritas by Jess Zwall ’22, Maddox Malave ’23, and Hassan Murtaza ’23 both won Judge’s Choice awards.

George School’s Amnesty International club was recognized for its artistic activism as one of eight winners from more than 200 who entered the 2020 Amnesty International USA ActivismX challenge.

Athletics

The new Hall of Athletic Honor inducted its first class: coach and Girls’ Athletic Director Anne LeDuc, teacher and coach Paul Machemer ’65, coach and Director of Physical Education Robert Geissinger, multi-sport player Elaine Maddox ’83, and coach and Director for Boys’ Physical Education Stanley Sutton.

La’Keisha Sutton, former professional basketball player, joined the coaching staff as co-head coach of varsity girls’ basketball.

Hana Oh ’24 won the individual championship in the Friends Schools League Golf Championship, the second George School student to win it.

Six members of the Class of 2021 committed to college athletic programs: Jacob Bright (cross country/track, Connecticut College), Lauren Hanna (soccer, Hamilton College), Angelo Leon (football, Washington & Jefferson College), Kaliyah Myricks (basketball, Georgetown University), Alexis SemideyMartinez (basketball, Colby College), and Aqua Withers Carello (basketball, Swarthmore College).

4 GEORGE SCHOOL

College Counseling

After submitting 1,410 applications, the 125 members of the Class of 2021 headed to 82 institutions in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These accomplished graduates were admitted to varied programs, including cinematic arts and media studies at the University of Southern California, sports management at the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sports at New York University, and the Ujima Global Leaders Program at Northeastern University. Our students plan to study subjects from fire science, peace and conflict studies, and international economics to aerospace engineering, archaeology, and game design.

Alumni Programs

The George School alumni network grew to include 9,390 living alumni—with more than 7,900 residing in the United States, and more than 550 alumni residing abroad. George School is truly a global community.

Under the Trees debuted in November 2020 sharing stories of alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and students who are making an impact at George School and around the world. In February 2021, the Alumni Speaker Series debuted with Andy Chen ’91 discussing COVID and vaccine distribution.

Alumni Weekend 2021 featured four days of virtual events and activities that brought together George School alumni in a new and creative way, while maintaining the traditions that we all hold dear. During the Alumni Awards Ceremony, Jaki Shelton Green ’71 received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Lila Anton ’01 received the Young Alumni Award, and Betty Lou Thompson ’56 and Mike Kosoff ’56 received Lifetime Service Awards.

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

So, too, is an appreciation for all that has been given before. George School has a longstanding tradition of philanthropy— from 1887, when John M. George bequeathed the seed money from which the school grew, to 2020, when Steven Kauff ’80 and those who joined him helped cover the significant additional cost of reopening amid a pandemic. Our campus is graced with buildings and our community graced with scholarships named for people who gave their treasure, time, talent, and love to the school—names like Spruance, Alden, Campbell, Walton, McFeeley, Bancroft, Bourns, Streetz, and Anderson,

I am thrilled to be here and look forward to getting to know today’s students as well as alumni across the generations. I am thankful for your gifts—those already received and those yet to come. And I am delighted to be part of this given and giving community.

Like many others, when I arrived in May, I was immediately taken by the warmth of the George School community. I saw how faculty members do so much more than teach their students, how students help and mentor their peers, and how every person on campus looks out for one another, especially during COVID. The sense of giving is palpable.

THE POWER OF THE GEORGE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

The George School community came together in celebration of the school we love for our day of giving—the Great Green Give—on February 5, 2021. Thank you to all 625 donors who contributed more than $245,000 for George School.

We felt the GS love from around the world, receiving gifts from twelve countries and forty-one states. Given the uncertainty that this year has presented to so many, we were humbled by the generosity of our students, alumni, parents, trustees, faculty and staff, grandparents, former faculty, and friends who supported George School with a gift. A special thank you to our challenge donors; this group of alumni and parents of alumni inspired the philanthropy of hundreds of people in this community. We are grateful for their dedication to George School and for pushing us to rise to the challenge.

Gifts made for the Great Green Give support the George School Fund. The funds raised in the George School Fund and all its designations provide the critical resources needed to enrich the George School experience for today’s students. Gifts made during this giving challenge benefit the people of George School—our faculty, staff, and students—in countless ways and ensure that the school can continue its mission of providing an exceptional Quaker education.

John M. George

John M. George (1802-1887), for whom George School is named, was a strong and vigorous farmer. The sole survivor of a wealthy Hicksite family of six siblings who never married, John chose to will the bulk of his estate to the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite) for the purpose of establishing a Quaker boarding school. In 1993, George School pays tribute to its founding donor by establishing the John M. George Society, which honors individuals who provide for the school in their wills or estate plans.

SUPPORTING FINANCIAL AID FOR GEORGE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Through a group of related programs, individuals and businesses who owe Pennsylvania state taxes can contribute to tuition assistance at George School and receive a tax credit for up to 90 percent of their contribution. Donated funds are earmarked for Pennsylvania students with demonstrated need.

In 2020–2021, donors contributed nearly $200,000 in financial assistance to George School students through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs as well as through the Friends Collaborative, a Special Purpose Entity. We are grateful to these donors and welcome others to join them by putting their Pennsylvania taxes to work for future George School students. It’s easy and only costs a dime to give a dollar. Contact Chris Jackiewicz at cjackiewicz@georgeschool.org or call 215.579.6572 for more information.

14 GEORGE SCHOOL
A George School education wouldn’t be nearly as amazing were it not for the bright, talented, and diverse students we attract and enroll thanks in part to the school’s robust financial aid. One important part of that financial aid budget comes from an unlikely source—the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

When the Sabapathis toured local secondary schools with their older son, Pranav ’22, they fell in love with George School. They found the community refreshingly friendly and diverse and, according to father Mani, “It felt like anybody would fit in and be welcomed.”

The Sabapathis have had such a positive experience that they enrolled younger son Keshav ’25 this year; and chose to give to the school via the Friends Collaborative, capitalizing on a state program that lets you earmark your income taxes to fund tuition assistance for students from Pennsylvania with demonstrated need.

“The main reason we give,” reflects Mani, “is because we are so appreciative of the quality of the character of the students. Other boarding schools have international diversity, but George School has domestic diversity as well as a great financial aid program.

George School makes good use of its endowment to support students. They make a pretty substantial commitment.” And now so do the Sabapathis.

REPORT OF GIFTS | 2020–21 15
“The state offers a tax credit for folks to support education in Pennsylvania,” explains Mani.
“If you give $30,000, the state will give you a tax credit for 90 percent of it, and you can identify a particular school, like George School.”
Mani Sabapathi

“As a George School student, one of the fundamental things that you learn is that you are part of a larger community and how each person has a responsibility to provide positive impact upon their communities. I wanted others to have a similar opportunity large or small to join this effort and more importantly to assure that this tradition of community support continues.”
