In this newsletter you can read about what we have done to overcome these challenges and offer some innovative solutions to enable our customers’ businesses to grow. From night deliveries across Scotland to fast and efficient 24 hour deliveries through our UK pallet network, Fortec, we’re finding bespoke solutions for customers and flexing our networks to accommodate very different needs.

We’ve also been working on opening up new trade lanes, including Turkey. Globally we have had a significant change through the purchase of OHL in the United States.

OHL ACQUISITION PAVES THE WAY FOR EXTENDED GLOBAL REACH GEODIS has completed the acquisition of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics (OHL), a strategic move to reinforce GEODIS’ presence in the US logistics market.

GEODIS BARBOUR BECOMES GEODIS UK GEODIS Barbour, a long-standing name in the transportation of whisky in Scotland, has become GEODIS UK.

Trade from Barbour European to GEODIS UK. This was a natural progression for the two companies after five years of ownership.

Back in 2010, GEODIS UK bought the Barbour European business, creating GEODIS Barbour, and as a result we have been able to significantly develop our service offering to our customers in Scotland over the past five years.

This transfer will have no impact on the business we do with you as customers. Our operational model will remain the same, as will our staff and the systems we use. The only difference you might notice is the change of name on your invoices – from Barbour European to GEODIS UK.

GROWING OUR OWN TALENT GEODIS UK has launched a new apprenticeship scheme as part of our continuing commitment to ‘grow our own talent’ and promote careers within the logistics industry.

This year, five apprentices have been recruited between the ages of 16 and 19, based at our sites in High Wycombe, Northampton, West Thurrock, Warrington and Watford Gap for an initial programme of 12 to 18 months.

The apprenticeship scheme has been set up in partnership with the Tess Group, a learning and development provider based in Northampton, and will enable apprentices to learn customer service, warehouse and planning skills whilst working towards a level two or three National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

As part of the scheme the apprentices are assigned a full learning and development plan and a GEODIS mentor for the duration of their studies. In addition to

on-going work-based learning, the apprentices will also have the opportunity of in-house personal development and will gain a useful insight into the way businesses operate and the range of GEODIS careers available.

DELIVERING AFTER DARK

GEODIS in Scotland has introduced a brand new ‘Out-ofHours’ service developed with the retail sector in mind.

The new solution is inspired by the success of our ‘Out-of-Hours’ services already in use daily throughout France. Garments from a customer in Spain are transported to regional hubs before being delivered to high street stores across France overnight.

The preference for out-of-hours deliveries to the retail sector is growing, particularly for city

centre stores. The benefits can be substantial for both retailers and logistics providers; improved stock flow, fewer conflicts between deliveries and customers on the shop floor, shorter journey times and reductions in fuel consumption.

In Scotland, our ‘Out-of-Hours’ service currently operates to five cities, with dedicated out-bound vehicles delivering to stores in Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.

Each city has several stores that require delivery before 7am

every morning, allowing time for store staff to get their stock out on to the rails before opening time.

THE TURKISH CONNECTION Winning a valuable new contract with URBN Outfitters has led to the creation of a new trade lane from Turkey to the UK. URBN Outfitters, which owns the brands Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN, has awarded GEODIS a contract after working closely with OHL on other global accounts.

The new route was specifically designed to enable us to meet the needs of URBN Outfitters and involves us collecting finished clothing products from its suppliers around Europe and Turkey.

Christian Weber, Director European Network & Key Accounts for GEODIS UK, says: “We won this new contract through a combination of tried and tested routes across Europe but also having the ability to flex and create a whole new trade lane from Turkey.

This was only possible due to our propensity to work with our clients and make things happen quickly and effectively. This really does prove that

we want to grow and develop with our clients, wherever they move in the world.”

The new contract involves shipping clothing out of Istanbul direct to the port of Toulon and then via road through France and across the Channel into Dover.

From Dover, they are carried on our trucks to our main hub in Northampton, customs cleared, checked and re-palletised. We then manage the inbound vendor collections to URBN’s distribution centre down the road in Rushton.

The whole process is managed and shared on our online portal to give URBN Outfitters total transparency and visibility.

In addition to the seamless process, we also involve our drivers who proactively manage the collection process by checking items individually, meaning there are no anomalies when the garment shipments arrive back in the UK.

INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT

BELGIAN ROAD TAX CHANGES New road tax rules in Belgium will come into effect on 1st April 2016, bringing a change in the way tax is calculated for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The Flemish, Walloon and Brussels regions joined forces in January 2011 to improve the quality of Belgium’s transportation routes and as part of their plans have reformed road tax to introduce a kilometre tax for HGVs of 3.5 tonnes and above.

These new rules mean that any vehicle using the toll roads in Belgium will need an on-board unit (OBU) which will track the kilometres clocked up by each vehicle and a tax will be applied as appropriate.

FORTEC WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS Fortec welcomed two new members to the network at the start of this year. EUR Service UK and Roberts Transport joined in January further strengthening the network in key postcode areas and enhancing the services available across the UK. EUR Service UK, based in Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, offers a wide range of logistical and supply chain solutions in the UK and across Europe including priority delivery and collections, container movement, warehousing solutions and trailer rentals.

Roberts Transport, in Littlehampton, is a family-run transport, distribution and warehousing business, set up in 2006. They offer same-day, next-day, chilled, ambient and frozen services as well as delivering to Europe.

INDUSTRY NEWS 36% OF CLICK & COLLECT SHOPPERS EXPERIENCED ISSUES OVER CHRISTMAS Over a third of Click & Collect Christmas shoppers experienced issues with their orders, a JDA/Centiro report has found.

CHINA-FRANCE: AN UNBEATABLE NEW OFFER GEODIS has combined the expertise of both its Freight Forwarding and Distribution & Express lines of business to launch a new integrated offering between China and France.
