When we think of a piece of furniture, we think ahead and anticipate right from the design phase how it will translate into consumption of resources. Some of our initiatives include using woods harvested close to our workshops rather than import it from the other side of the globe, promoting bamboo-based fabrics that can be recycled and need little water to develop, or using natural finishes and water-based dyes rather than toxic solvents. Every reflection, every action is a manifesto of Roche Bobois initiative to corporate social and environmental responsibility.

glossary BRONZE: This term is aged to define all the metal parts in a piece. It refers to the material originally aged. Bronzes are an essential part of furniture decors and are aged only for outstanding pieces.

“QUEEN’S BACK”: Named after Louis XV’s wife, it refers to the back of a seat that is wider and more vertical than the usual bergere arm chair. These chairs are often placed against the wall of a room rather than its center.

SKIM COAT LACQUER: Originally a resin harvested on certain trees in India, it is now a cellulose-based lacquer with the same properties: a subtle shiny finish comparable to that of waxing wood for centuries.

CANING: Since the beginning of the 18th century, thongs of canes (rattan) are strapped on the backs, sides and sometimes seats of chairs. This technique originated in the Flemish region of Belgium and has remained much in use. Caning gives to seats a unique comfort and lightness in design.

CABRIOLET BACK: It refers to smaller armchairs with a curvy back. Usually of Louis XV style, they are placed in the center of a room where their elegant back can be seen.

ROPE SPRING SETTING: Following the interweaving of the jute straps to the chair structure, the upholsterer sews the springs and sets them with the help of a rope knotted on each one. This ensures a perfect control on the height of the seating, the type of comfort and the shape of the seat. It requires strength, technique and experience to adapt to each seat structure.

CHESTNUT: This hard wood with a grain similar to oak’s is aged for the inside parts of furniture. Its high content in tannins is a natural repellent for insects and worms. OAK: Considered a noble wood, oak is much appreciated in furniture design for its look and durability. Certain pieces are entirely made of oak, but it can also be aged only for the inside of a piece or the sides and bottoms of drawers. CHIFFONNIER: High chest of five drawers, the chiffonnier is traditionally aged for storing clothes. With seven drawers it becomes a Semainier (from the French word “semaine”, which means “week”). COVER: In upholstery it refers to the positioning of the fabric on a seat. It is a critical stage in the upholstering process. Cutting the fabric, aligning and joining the patterns, stretching the fabric all need the attention and experience of a skilled upholsterer.

ESTAMPILLE OR STAMP: It is the signature of the cabinet maker, its seal. All pieces from Les Provinciales collection bear the Roche Bobois stamp. FINISH: For case goods, it is a combination of the stain, the antiquing process (patina) and the finishing varnish (matte, satin or shiny finish). For upholstery it refers to the choice of technique used to hide the fixing of the fabric (piping or plait). TRADITIONAL UPHOLSTERER FILLING: This traditional technique goes back to the 18th century. Springs are sewn to interwoven jute straps, compressed with rope, and then covered with heavy fabric. Horsehair, natural fiber or cotton wool is then added and covered with the upholstery fabric. This traditional technique guarantees an excellent durability and a perfect appearance.

BEECHWOOD: This pale wood is aged for seats. It can be easily sculpted and gives richness to the staining. Highly resistant, it is a perfect material for crafting chairs requiring precise joinery. HYGROMETRY: It refers to the level of humidity in the air and is an important factor for furniture crafted in solid wood. Traditional joinery was designed to give room for wood parts to contract and expand freely with humidity.

SLATTED PANELS: To control the contraction of wood panels in dry surroundings, solid wood is replaced by panels composed of solid wood slats assembled and veneered. The wood slats are covered by a thin wood panel which grain goes perpendicular to the slats. It ensures that the contraction of the different panels parts are offset. Such panels allow to craft furniture with solid woods with little sensitivity to hygrometry. CHERRY WOOD: It actually refers to wild cherry trees. Its warm color and fine grain are widely aged in cabinet making. MORTISE: The receiving end of the joinery of two solid wood pieces. Its hollow shape holds the tenon and the assembly is secured by one or two wood pegs. WALNUT: A highly resistant wood, walnut has a very fine grain and smooth finish. Its darker color and marked veins are aged for decorative purpose. DECORATIVE DETAILING: It refers to all the elements aged to decorate a piece of furniture. Each period and style has its preferred details: flute and interlacing for Louis XVI. Acanthus leaves, leaf curls and small flowers for Louis XV.

PANEL: Central element on the side or the door of a piece of furniture; planks or slats are assembled, not glued, in a frame. The frame must not be glued to let the inside panel contract or expand with changing hygrometry. PIPING: A little “pipe” of fabric, piping is aged as an alternative to upholstery nails in the finishing of seats. It can be simple or double, and its more refined aspect is aged for the more stylish pieces of upholstery. ANTIQUE PATINA: It includes all the techniques aged to “age” a piece of furniture. Among these are the “breaking” of the edges, the “hits”, worm holes, stains, dusting, shadowing, etc. The purpose of this complex set of techniques is to give a piece the glow of the furniture of the past. DOVETAIL: Of trapezoid shape, the dovetail is a piece of wood that is aged to assemble the front and side parts of a drawer. This traditional technique is a sign of good cabinet making and a guarantee that the piece will last. STAIN: It is the “color” applied to a raw wood. Unlike paint that is only superficial, stain goes deep in the fiber of the wood. It is the first step in the finishing process.

TENON: The protruding end of the joinery of two solid wood pieces. This part locks itself in the hollow part (mortise) and the assembly is secured by one or two wood pegs. LIME TREE: This finely grained wood allows for a perfectly smooth finish. It is therefore widely aged for painted furniture. BUFFED VARNISH: This technique refers to applying skim coat lacquer with a pad of cotton wool through a repetitive circular movement. The result is a glossy finish with a remarkable polish. The “à la manière de...” collection is a tribute to the great cabinetmakers of the 18th century and their extensive use of this technique.
