An Daonchartlann Reopening on July 28th The Society’s Archive & Research Centre—An Daonchartlann—based at the DLR Leisure Centre in Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin, is set to reopen on Wednesday 28th July 2021 at 11.00hrs and each Wednesday thereafter.

Restrictions will apply (see page 4) and only fully vaccinated Members and visitors shall be permitted on the premises. This is a temporary measure that will be reviewed in December 2021 as the national vaccination programme covers a greater proportion of the population.

The Society has already installed protective Perspex screens between each work station and provided hand sanitisers, gloves and masks. All visiting the facility will be required to comply

with the necessary regulations and to provide proof of vaccination.

The various work stations and each computer will be sanitised after use and the regulations on the restrictions on numbers in the building will be strictly applied.

For all Members and visitors intending to use the facility, please carefully read the requirements on page 4 of this newsletter.

Operating an Archive & Research Centre is a very important aspect of the Society’s work in the promotion of genealogy and related subjects and therefore, we are hugely grateful for the support received from Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council in the provision of this facility.

Eddie Gahan, FGSI, Director of the Outreach Programme, is the coordinator of the weekly “Drop-Ins” which are proving to be hugely popular with our Members around the world.

These informal weekly “Drop-Ins” are only for fully paid up Members and they are designed to allow you to join the Zoom meeting at any time between 11.00hrs and 12.00hrs on Wednesdays—with the exception of the fourth Wednesday due to the Monthly Morning Open Meeting.

An Daonchartlann—the Society’s Archive and Research Centre - has several different and collections.

These consist of published works, family papers, photographs, manuscripts, maps and family charts.

Members and friends are encouraged to deposit copies of their research to the Society. Other donations such as that received from David Doody (see below), are hugely welcome to build up this wonderful resource.

Items such as school yearbooks, sports clubs annuals and traditional memorial cards have been deposited with the Archive over the years. Indeed, the Society’s Archive will soon receive Ireland’s first “credit card sized” digital memorial card containing the complete service for the late Andrew Gerard Ball, a former Associate Member of the Society.

Antrim - The Irish Revolution 1912-23

In the year that some in Northern Ireland will be marking its centenary, the latest in ‘The Irish Revolution, 1912-23’ series is both timely and, indeed, hugely important in its contribution to our understanding of this period in “The North”. ‘Antrim—The Irish Revolution, 1912-23’ by Brian Feeney. ISBN: 987-1-84682-860-7 : 180pps : B+W Ills. P/bk. €24.95 : Web-Price €22.50 : published by Four Courts Press in July 2021, is the tenth in the series. Previous volumes covered Sligo, Tyrone, Waterford, Monaghan, Derry, Limerick, Louth, Kildare and Leitrim.

When we think of the Irish revolutionary period from 1912 to 1923, nowhere in Ireland is more the situation more complex or multi-layered than in the north east in the County of Antrim and, especially, in Ireland’s largest city at the time, Belfast. Culturally, religiously, economically, and politically quite distinct from the rest of the island, with the exception, of the northern parts of its neighbouring counties, Down and Armagh. Belfast was Ireland’s only industrial city with heavy industry, factories and, in many cases, world-leading manufacturing plants and, as such, it more resembled the cities of Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester than Dublin or any other Irish city. This difference was also reflected in the social fabric of the city with its rows of back to back redbrick tenements like cities in northern England.

Religiously, as Feeney explains in detail, Co. Antrim was certainly an outlier – more like neighbouring Scotland, a mere 19kms away, than anywhere else in Ireland. With Presbyterians making up circa 50% of the population, Church of Ireland (Anglicans) at 21.7% and Roman Catholics only 20.5%, Antrim in 1911 was the most homogenous Protestant county in Ireland. This religious make-up clearly shaped the county’s politics and its allegiances as staunchly unionist and with its wealthy industrial and manufacturing centre in Belfast, it was vehemently opposed to ‘Home Rule’ and fully prepared to resist its implementation. Brian Feeney brings together new research and with a politically sharp analytical approach, interrogates this evidence and contextualises the events, people, and circumstances, in which, a very complicated and nuanced set of organisational inter-relationships in the nationalist/Catholic community are explained. These included Gaelic language revivalists, revolutionaries, Ancient Order of Hibernians, clergy, local politicians, and Irish National Foresters amongst others. Given the unique circumstances of this county, tightly integrated into Britain’s politics and economy, Irish nationalism was caught between revolution and survival. As matters deteriorated for the Catholic population from 1920 and especially, after the establishment of Northern Ireland in 1921, the full force of the new state was employed to repress the nationalist community. The various events between 1920 and 1922 which became collectively known as the ‘Belfast pogrom’ are meticulously examined and carefully explained. The political and military/counter-insurgency measures that ensured the security of the newly established northern state are explored where the unionists wasted no time in ruthlessly consolidating their position against, what they viewed, as the enemies within their new Protestant state – the Catholic minority. In many ways, Brian Feeney has shone a long overdue light on what became over the years an almost forgotten front in ‘The Irish Revolution’. Dr Brian Feeney is a political columnist with the Irish News and was Head of History at St Mary’s University College, Belfast. He is co-author of the award-winning Lost Lives: the stories of the men, women and children killed in the Northern Ireland Troubles and author of Sinn Féin: a hundred turbulent years (2002), A Short History of the Troubles (2007), Insider: Gerry Bradley’s Life in the IRA (2011), Seán Mac Diarmada (2014).

GSI BOARD NEWS & UPDATES The Board of Directors met via Zoom on Thursday July 1st 2021 at 11.00hrs where it was decided to prepare to reopen An Daonchartlann from Wednesday 21st July 2021 if volunteers are available. (see page 1) This decision followed the careful consideration by the Board of a report produced on the reopening An Daonchartlann presented by the Leas-Chathaoirleach, James Walsh, as Health & Safety Officer & COVID19 Officer, and the Director of Archival Services & Education, Ann O’Neill.

The Board compared the observations with the measures already adopted, both infrastructural and regulatory, and given the demographics of our membership base and of our visitors, considered what extra measures should be taken for the reopening.

The Board adopted Res: 20/07/1599 which formally noted the report and thanked its authors, stipulated that reopening should be agreed with a temporary provision that all persons entering onto the premises must be able to produce proof that they are fully vaccinated.

This provision will be reviewed in December 2021.

Eddie Gahan, FGSI, Outreach director, updated the Board on the weekly “Archive Drop-Ins” held each Wednesday morning, except on the 4th Wednesday, and pointed to the popularity of theses Zoom sessions amongst the Members in Ireland and overseas. Members seeking research advice or wishing to discuss their research have benefited greatly from this essen-

tially collaborative and informal advisory service.

The Director of Membership Services & Cemetery Projects, Barry O’Connor, FGSI, advised the Board of the wonderful gift to An Daonchartlann – the Society’s Archive and Research Centre – by David Doody.

MGSI. The collection included, ‘The Coleraine Chronicle – Births, Marriages and Deaths 1844-1869’ published by the Coleraine Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society 2003. ‘The Scottish Genealogist’ the Quarterly Journal of the Scottish Genealogy Society (47 vols) published March, June, September, and December of each year. December 2002 (1 vol), March to December 2003 (4 vols), March to December 2004 (4 Vols), March and December 2005 (2 vols), December 2007 (1 vol), March, September and December 2008 (3 vols) and March 2009 to December 2016 (32 vols). The Board was delighted to receive such a substantial collection for the Society’s Archives and Research Centre and requested that acknowledgement be duly published in the ‘Gazette’.

The Board The Deputy General Secretary, Paula Jones, advised the Board on the steady progress by the Select Committee on the Journal of the Genealogical Society of Ireland and that the publication date of September 2021 will be met.

There is no Board meeting in August, therefore, the next Board meeting will be on September 2nd 2021.

Précis of the June Lecture On Tuesday June 8th, 2021, the Society was delighted to welcome James Scannell as our guest speaker via Zoom on the topic ‘Published local history—a much overlooked resource for the genealogist?’.

James revealed that there no national listing of local history publications currently available, though of late, the Federation of Local History Societies, the national body for local history societies in the Republic of Ireland, is attempting to established a database of publications for future reference. However the Local Studies Section of most country library services hold details and sometimes copies of local history society publications published within their county which can be consulted.

Some local history societies may have back and current issues copies of their publications for sale and sometimes post those issues out of print on their web-site. Contact details for local history societies on a county by county basis is published in he annual Journal of the Federation of Local History Societies which is available for purchase from the Federation James pointed out that journals such as the Dublin History Record [The Old Dublin Society], Journal of the Irish Railway Record Society, and The Irish Sword [The Military History Society of Ireland] and numerous others often contain a vast amount of family history/genealogical information in their articles but in the absence of a proper index can be hard to access. Since the production of a professionally produced index is expensive, the Dublin History Record is one of the few publications that is fully indexed, Vol. 1 covers 1938 to 2003 and Vol. 2 2004 to 2019 while The Irish Sword index covers issues 1 to 74 but a second index bay be published in time. Many local history societies publish as an index to their publications a list of the articles featured in their publications but these listings, unlike a proper index, do not reveal the contents of the articles listed.

Remarkably the Dublin Historical Record is only one of three Irish local history publications available on-line from JSTOR [Journal Storage] in which articles can be read on-line and downloaded if required James concluded by observing that as local history publications often contain detailed families histories and those of local businesses, they should be not be overlooked by those researching their family history or undertaking genealogical research, as frequently these articles are very detailed and written by those who have good knowledge of local history/ family research or have been awarded history degrees as frequently local history publication provide the opportunity for many to have the research work published and made available to a wider audience.

For ‘Truce’ Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc looks at the myth and truth surrounding events that occurred between the announcement of the Truce on July 8th 1921 and its implementation with effect noon on July 11th 1921 when the military campaign in the War of Independence ceased to allow political discussions and negotiations to take place with the aim of finding a solution to the Irish Question resulting in the signing of the Anglo-Irish Peace Treaty on December 6th that year which created the 26-county Irish Free State but allowed the 6-county Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom.

For this book the author looks at the numerous events and incidents that took place over these three days in which sixty people were killed but points out that for over a century the truth surrounding these killings has been conveniently overlooked and replaced with myths and propaganda invented by politicians, historians and newspaper columnists to support the idea that the IRA embarked on a campaign to kill as many people as possible before the War of Independence ended, most of whom were ‘soft targets’.

In this excellent and engrossing book Ó Ruairc goes back to the facts to reveal what actually happened and looks at events such as Belfast’s ‘Bloody Sunday’, the kidnapping and execution of four unarmed British soldiers in Cork, IRA attacks on off-duty British troops, the shooting of spies, and proceeds to separate fact from fiction to show what really happened.

The book opens with a chapter outlining the long road to establishing the Truce with many false starts and where intransience shown by both sides, often over very minor issues, delayed its implementation which although anticipated at various times, did not happen until July 1921 with the result that the ordinary rank and file in the IRA and British Army had no idea what was going on as the negotiations were carried out in secret to the extent that when the Truce was announced it came as a surprise to many of them, and to the general public as well.

Once the Truce was agreed, Ó Ruairc make the point that it took times for details of the Truce to be conveyed to IRA and British Army units all over Ireland due to the means of communication in use at that time so a three-day interval between announcement and implementation was instituted to allow this to take place but some IRA operations which took place during this interval were due to that fact that unit commanders had not received this information in time was and not a last minute attempt by them to engage with Crown forces as portrayed by some commentators. According to statistical analysis of the IRA’s operations, contrary to views expressed by a number of commentators, journalists and historians, there was no specific campaign against those considered ‘soft targets’, members of the RIC, Protestants, or those considered informers.

Indeed Ó Ruairc makes the point that some of those killed allegedly during this three-day period were killed on other dates and cites a number of examples where these have been incorrectly included in this three-day period When the Truce was announced those under sentence of death by the British were reprieved while a number of persons held by the IRA were released unharmed.

While a number of people were killed by the British forces during this three-day period, some were as the result of ill-disciple rather than as part a planned campaign to get last minute revenge on their opponents, a few fell into the latter category. Two distinct chapters - ‘PreTruce Offensives and IRA Operations, 8-11 July 1921’ and ‘Fatalities Inflicted by the British Forces’ look at what happened during these three days while ‘Belfast’s Bloody Sunday’ looks the wide spread civil disorder that took place there including a full table of those killed in that city on July 10th/11th 1921.

One excellent Appendix is one listing ‘Fatalities mentioned in the text that occurred after the announcement of the Truce’ broken down by name, status i.e. civilian, IRA volunteer, Black & Tan, British Soldier, RIC member, and cause of death.

In the chapter ‘The Execution of Suspected Spies’ Ó Ruairc reveals that 184 civilians were killed by the IRA during the War of Independence, discussing some of the cases citied in it and providing in-depth tables by county showing who was executed, supplemented by a table ‘Suspected spies killed by the IRA listed on the Compensation Commission’ which includes the interesting column ‘Acceptance of British Liability’ which reveals that on some cases the suspected executed spy was working for the British or had provided them with information. In any event the decision by the IRA to execute someone for spying or providing information to the Crown forces was not taken lightly.

In the chapter ‘Fatalities inflicted by the British Forces’ Ó Ruairc reveals that the term ‘shot while trying to escape’ was a euphemism frequently used by the British forces to cover-up their killing of captured IRA men or those suspected of being IRA members even though there was a specific instruction that all those arrested were to be handcuffed though in some of these cases cited, this was not the case. Many of those serving with Crown forces had served on the Western Front where summary execution of those suspected of spying or assisting the enemy was the order of the day. An excuse used for killing enemy prisoners was ‘killed by enemy fire’ which had the same status as the term ‘shot while trying to escape’ used in Ireland.

The activities of a Murder Gang in Dublin is also explored as in the city and suburbs a bitter intelligence war was waged between Crown forces and the Squad and the Dublin Brigade Active Service Units with the former engaging in the shooting of targeted individuals, usually at night, operations which continued right up to the start of the Truce, with Ó Ruairc citing several of these.

This is really a fascinating book in which the author has taken great care and carried out research in depth, with attention to details, to expose the many myths associated with this period which have been repeated down through the years in newspaper and magazine articles, books, and to reveal what actually happened during the period of July 8th to July 11th 1921 in a very clear and concise manner and has successfully separated myth from fact to provide the reader with a true and accurate picture of what happened in Ireland from the time the Truce was declared to its commencement.

An essential book to add to one’s collection of titles on the War of Independence and Irish History in general.

4 ‘Dates and Time - a handbook for local historians’ by Lionel M. Mumby The need to establish precise and accurate dates for the creation of documents, maps and other written sources is fundamental to the methodology of local history. We need to be able to place events in their proper order, and therefore must place documents and other sources in a comparable chronological order, and also need to establish the context of an event, a process, a specific source how does the material or event which we are studying fit into the pattern of time and events in the wider world. The first part of the book discuses issues of the concept of time and how people in the past have measured it and evolved a variety of dating systems, so that local historians and others can begin to appreciate just what ‘time’ and ‘date’ may have meant in the past. It also shows how historians can use older dating methods, such as regnal years, to ascribe dates to documents which they are studying, and elucidates confusing topics as the date of the New Year’s Day and the Julian and Gregorian calendars.

The second part of this book comprises a series of twelve detailed appendices which tabulate the regnal years, other calendars, saints’ days and similar information of importance to local historians.

Mumby lectured at Cambridge from 1946 to 1985, and worked extensively with groups there and Hertfordshire to produce parish and regional histories. He edited ‘The Local Historian’ published by the British Association for Local History, from 1955 to 1975, and became its president in 1995. He died in 2009. First published in 1997, reprinted 2015. An Daonchartlann & COVID-19 An Daonchartlann - Archive & Research Centre will be open on each Wednesday from July 28th, initially from 11.00hrs to 15.00hrs.

Members and visitors please note that due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the following shall apply.

(1) All visits to the archive, for members and non-members, is by appointment only.

All appointments to be made, in advance, to Archivist@familyhistory.ie only.

(2) Maximum time for each visit, is 1 hour for non- members and 2 hours for paid-up members. Maximum number of visitors per appointment is one person.

(3) Gloves supplied in the archive, must always be used while in the archive.

(4)

Face mask/covering must always be worn while in the archive. You will be refused admission to the archive without a face mask/covering.

(5) A name and contact phone number will be required from each person visiting.

(6) All visitors, members and non-members must leave the archive as soon as their allocated time has finished.

Please do not visit the archive, if you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with someone, who has been confirmed as having Covid-19 or are waiting for test results.

(The Archive cannot be a drop-in centre under the current Covid-19 regulations and we hope to be able to revert to such at a later stage.)

“HALL’S INDEX” The “Gazette” is Ireland’s longest running monthly genealogical newsletter and it is read by thousands each month around the world.

The past issues of the Society’s newsletter from 1996 to 2016 had been fully indexed by the late Brendan Hall, MGSI. The “Hall’s Index” now includes all issues right up to date and is available on www.familyhistory.ie Although we’re not members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the team at the “Gazette” always endeavour to operate in accordance with the NUJ Code of Conduct www.nuj.org.uk/about/nuj-code/ and in line with the 'National Policy Statement on Ensuring Research Integrity in Ireland' which was endorsed by the Genealogical Society of Ireland back in June 2014 soon after its launch at the Royal Irish Academy. GENEALOGY HELP CENTRE An Daonchartlann, the Society’s Archive and Research Centre is located at the DLR Leisure Centre, Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin.

The facility will be open each Wednesday from 11.00hrs to 15.00hrs but with prior booking on Archivist@familyhistory.ie The use of our extensive archival resources is reserved for fully paid-up GSI members, however, day research membership is always available on request.
