Staff spotlight: Kevin Gallacher

Tell us a bit about yourself and your career to date

I started work at 16 as a YTS trainee civil engineer and progressed through the various levels of site management. My last position before joining Mackenzie Construction was Managing Director of Robertson Civil Engineering, where I was responsible for all aspects of the civil engineering division. I have worked on many large and interesting civil engineering projects throughout Scotland. As civil engineers we get the opportunity to be involved in some fantastic projects. In terms of me personally… I’m married, with three kids and a dog!

Tell us about your day-to-day role at Mackenzie Construction

My role at Mackenzie Construction is Regional Manager, and I am responsible for the development and growth of the business in the North of Scotland. I am accountable for all aspects of the business in the North, from winning work to project delivery and commercial performance.

What attracted you to the business and the role?

After working for several years in the Central Belt, I was keen to return to the North of Scotland full time. I was very interested in the opportunity to work with an established civil engineering business, which had an existing client base that we could use as the foundation for the growth of an Inverness office. There are significant opportunities for growth in the North of Scotland and I was excited to have the chance to be part of the growth and expansion of Mackenzie Construction in this area.

What’s your vision for the Inverness team at Mackenzie Construction?

To see Mackenzie Construction recognised as one of the leading civil engineering companies in Scotland, with a robust presence across the country, operating from two key hubs in Glasgow and Inverness. I want to keep our teams focused on exemplary service delivery, impressive efficiency and to have a clear commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. I want our clients, supply chain and staff to continue to feel safe and valued and to see our team striving to be their best - working hard to deliver service excellence to all clients. I also want us to continue to engage and add value to the communities in which we work.

What would you say are the benefits of a career with Mackenzie Construction?

Being able to work as part of a team who are growing and developing together, within a company framework that has the feeling of being a family. We have long established relationships with key clients who provide opportunities for both individual and company growth, so we can challenge and improve our performance on an on-going basis.

What industry innovations have impressed you in recent months?

I am particularly interested in the innovations which have taken place in autonomous and semi-autonomous plant. The people/plant interface is a real area of concern for me. I believe, in the near future, we will have self-driving excavators (controlled by sensors and GPS) which will remove the need for operators and banksmen for certain operations. This will create safer and more efficient sites, which brings a myriad of benefits.

If you could do anyone else’s job at Mackenzie Construction, whose would it be and why?

I wouldn’t want to do anyone else’s job. I’ve got the best job in the world; I get to dig holes with big machines then fill them full of concrete.
