Double award success at the 2021 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards

As well as taking home the top award in the ‘Greatest Contribution to Scotland’ category for Glasgow’s ‘Smart Canal’, Mackenzie Construction and Scottish Canals also scooped the Community Award for their regeneration works at Bowling Harbour. The iconic, 125-year-old viaduct structure at Bowling Harbour in West Dunbartonshire has been developed and transformed into a linear park and active travel connection as part of the latest phase of the regeneration of the western gateway of the Forth & Clyde Canal.

At a ceremony on 30 September 2021, the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards, organised by CECA Scotland and the Institution of Civil Engineers Scotland (ICE Scotland), the industry celebrated outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation, and ingenuity. The Bowline project, together with the recent refurbishment of the redundant railway viaduct arches into commercial units, has ensured the structure will continue to play an important role in the area. The success of the project was based on the involvement and support of multiple funding parties and the local community all coming together to achieve this shared vision. Opening to the public in August 2021, this new £8m infrastructure will transform the area, strengthening Bowling Harbour as a vibrant tourism destination and bustling hub of activity for locals and visitors alike: safeguarding Bowling Harbour’s rich heritage and building for its future. Managing Director, Andy Dalrymple, added,

“We are thrilled to win the Community Award for the Bowline project at Bowling Harbour. We are extremely proud of our people who worked to deliver this project and the way our teams integrated, communicated, and worked closely with our supply chain. The regeneration project at Bowling Harbour has been a long-term commitment and we will be proud to look back on it for many more years to come.”
