/ FOREWORD

ANDY DALRYMPLE

2025 marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Mackenzie Construction. Over the past year, we’ve consolidated the growth achieved in 2024, reaching a turnover of nearly £65 million and a team of 300 dedicated individuals. As one team, we continue to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Our growth is not only in scale but also in reach with operations stretching from the Shetland Islands to the south of Wales. As our geographical footprint expands across the UK, keeping our people connected and informed becomes increasingly important. With more of our site teams required to travel and work away from home, our HR team is actively exploring ways in which we can support these individuals.

This sustained growth is driven by the trust of both longstanding and new clients. Our site teams’ excellent performance has secured continued work through existing frameworks, while our Pre-construction and Estimating Teams have successfully secured new frameworks with clients such as Peel Ports, Babcock, Costain, and United Utilities.

To support this momentum, we are investing in both our people and our infrastructure. Our success has always been built on the strength of our team, and I want to thank everyone who has committed to professional development whether through formal qualifications, training courses, or by sharing knowledge with new colleagues. We are currently refurbishing the annex at our Burnfield Avenue Head Office to create a new and improved Training Academy, which we aim to launch later this summer.

Infrastructure improvements are also underway. Our new Operational Hub at Prism House in East Kilbride is already enhancing collaboration across our Estimating, Pre-construction, Construction, Commercial, and Compliance teams. Our Head Office remains our Administrative Hub and is being upgraded to support our evolving needs. We continue to invest in regional offices, with improvements in Dundee, Inverness, and Newcastle, and plans for a new office further south in England. On the digital front, we are trialling the use of iPads on site to replace paper-based systems, streamlining access to forms and documents.

Our 45th anniversary is a moment to both reflect and look ahead. We take pride in the journey so far, celebrating the achievements we’ve made together and honouring those who helped shape the company and its strong, family-oriented culture. As we look to the future, we remain focused on delivering more for our clients, supported by improved office spaces, digital innovation, training and development. Above all, we are committed to maintaining the culture of care and collaboration that defines Mackenzie Construction and underpins our continued success.

Mackenzie Construction Celebrates 45 Years of Excellence

This year, 2025, Mackenzie Construction proudly marks its 45th anniversary, a celebration of commitment, resilience, and the people who have made it all possible. The milestone is being commemorated under the theme: “45 Years of Dedication: Our Team, Our Story.”

Founded in 1980, Mackenzie Construction has grown from humble beginnings into one of Scotland’s leading civil engineering firms. Over the past four and a half decades, the company has built a reputation for quality, safety, and trusted delivery, but above all, for putting people at the heart of everything it does.

“Our 45-year journey has been defined by our people,” said Andy Dalrymple, Managing Director of Mackenzie Construction.

“From the very beginning, our team has been the foundation of our success. Dedicated professionals who bring passion, pride, and integrity to every project. This anniversary is a moment to honour their

contributions and reflect on the story we’ve built together.”

Throughout its history, Mackenzie Construction has delivered landmark projects across Scotland and the UK, from vital infrastructure improvement works to community-focused regeneration schemes. But beyond the projects, the company has remained firmly committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace, developing future talent, and giving back to the communities it serves.

“While we’re proud of our achievements over the past 45 years, we’re even more excited about the future,” said Andy, “With a strong, dedicated team and a clear vision, we look forward to continuing our story, one that’s built on trust, innovation, and a shared commitment to making a difference.”

Mackenzie Construction Celebrates Expansion with Official Opening of New Premises at Prism House

Mackenzie Construction marked an exciting milestone on Friday 31st January, as we hosted an official opening ceremony for our new premises at Prism House in East Kilbride. The event welcomed industry peers, colleagues, and new neighbours to celebrate the expansion, which reflects our continued growth and commitment to leading the way in quality and innovation.

The new facility will serve as a dedicated hub for the company’s pre-construction, compliance, construction, and commercial teams.

Speaking at the event, Andy Dalrymple, Managing Director at Mackenzie Construction, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion:

“This new premises marks a significant step forward for Mackenzie Construction. It provides an excellent environment for our teams to collaborate and continue delivering excellence. We were delighted to welcome our industry peers, colleagues, and neighbours to celebrate this occasion with us.”

The move to Prism House highlights Mackenzie Construction’s long-term investment in its people, infrastructure, and the wider industry. With a strong reputation for high quality and a focus on innovation, the company is well-positioned for future success.

As Mackenzie Construction embarks on this exciting new chapter, the new premises will play a key role in driving efficiency, fostering teamwork, and supporting the company’s ongoing growth.

Futureproofing Scotland’s Canals: Vital Winter Works

Each winter, Mackenzie Construction plays a crucial role in preserving and enhancing Scotland's historic canal network, working alongside Scottish Canals to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades. This winter, the team tackled key projects along the Caledonian and Crinan Canals, ensuring these iconic waterways remain safe, efficient, and future-ready.

At Fort Augustus, the primary works focused on upgrading the lock gate cills—raised sections on the floor of the lock chamber against which the lock gates seal shut. The installation of new steel cills is expected to improve the efficiency and longevity of the lock gates, enhance water management, and provide a better experience for visitors and boaters.

Mark Wilson, Construction Director at Mackenzie Construction, commented:

“Year in, year out, our team works tirelessly through often harsh winter conditions to keep the canal network safe and operational for everyone to enjoy. Our team at Fort Augustus put in an incredible effort over the winter months and successfully delivered the programme ahead of schedule.”

Further along the Caledonian Canal, at Corpach, the team completed maintenance work on another set of lock gates, undertaking a full gate life extension and refit. As part of this, over 600 bolts were replaced, helping to futureproof the structure against age-related deterioration and corrosion.

Meanwhile, works are ongoing at Crinan following three years of winter programmes that have seen Mackenzie Construction working closely with Scottish Canals’ operational team to replace life-expired lock gates 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Danny Brown, Project Manager at Mackenzie Construction, said:

“Whilst the winter conditions can sometimes be challenging, the work we do across the canal network is both impressive and rewarding. Working on these historic waterways is always interesting, but seeing the level of skill and engineering involved in upgrading and maintaining them is what makes these projects enjoyable.”

At Crinan, the 2024/2025 winter programme has seen the most challenging scope of works yet with the replacement of the sea lock, Lock 15. One of the primary challenges lay in determining where to position the crane that was essential for completing the installation. The only viable location with the necessary lifting capacity was on the public access loop road surrounding Crinan Village which posed a significant issue, as it would obstruct both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, impacting local residents, businesses, and tourism. With crane operations expected to last around three months, it was clear that a more sustainable and less disruptive solution was needed.

In response, we designed, constructed, and installed a temporary platform capable of supporting the crane required for the lock gate installation. Drawing on over two decades of experience in canal infrastructure, we also proposed adapting the platform for reuse on future projects offering both an immediate and long-term benefit to the client.

Danny Brown added:

“This innovative solution was a first for Scottish Canals, Mackenzie Construction, and the wider industry. It’s a testament to our commitment to delivering solutions that support not only the project and client, but also the community and environment.”

The focus at Crinan has now shifted to reinstating and improving areas around the basin that have been affected by the major engineering works over the past two years. Throughout the programme of work at Crinan we have been focused on engaging the community at all levels and the final design for the landscaping works will be influenced by Scottish Canals' community engagement sessions. Last year, we were also proud to launch the Crinan Community Fund which saw Mackenzie Construction supporting several local causes.

Mark Wilson added:

“I’d like to personally extend a massive thank you to all our teams who have worked throughout the winter months to deliver an impressive scope of work across Fort Augustus, Corpach and Crinan and to our partners at Scottish Canals for their collaboration and support. It’s always rewarding to see the canals reopen for the summer season, knowing we’ve worked closely with Scottish Canals to ensure these spaces are safe, operational and futureproofed for generations to come.”

Richard Millar, Chief Operating Office at Scottish Canals shared:

“Our 2024/2025 winter works programme included some of our most challenging canal engineering projects to date – all completed in partnership with our principal contractor Mackenzie Construction. From lock bypasses, masonry repairs and lock gate refurbishments – the work was highly complex, involved a high degree of interaction with the public, and was subject to a variety of heritage, environmental and public safety legislation. The team at Mackenzie Construction were reliable, supportive, and responsive to changing needs and circumstances throughout.”

Swift Action and Sustainable Innovation Restore Trinity Road After Sewer Collapse

On 14 August 2024, Mackenzie Construction was called to respond to a sudden sinkhole on Trinity Road, Edinburgh. Working in close collaboration with Scottish Water, we undertook an impressive emergency repair project that not only restored vital infrastructure but took the local community into careful consideration so that disruption was minimised.

The team quickly mobilised, setting up the site and launching an extensive investigation to assess the situation. Using advanced ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and CCTV surveys, the team discovered a severely blocked sewer line, unusual pipe gradients, and a deep subsurface void – but no actual pipe collapse.

By clearing the debris and conducting precision surveys, Mackenzie Construction ensured the safety of the site before installing a trench box system to access the pipe. Rather than undertake extensive excavation, the team opted for a more sustainable patch-lining repair technique to correct joint misalignments within the 36m pipe. This approach reduced both time on site and carbon emissions.

In another innovative step, a 6-meter-deep underground void was stabilised using a resin/grout injection system— avoiding the need for further excavation, limiting disruption to the community, and delivering a faster, greener solution.

The road was resurfaced and reopened to residents, but the story didn’t end there.

During their time on site, Mackenzie Construction identified a separate issue: a sunken area at the Trinity Road and Lennox Row junction. Further investigation confirmed another sewer collapse approximately 3 meters underground.

Employing vacuum excavation to safely navigate around multiple live services—such as gas and water—the team located and repaired the damaged section. Once again, CCTV was used to inspect

surrounding areas, and further damage was remedied through patch-lining, avoiding the need to expand the excavation.

By collaborating with utility providers, safely managing complex service infrastructure, and adopting innovative low-carbon repair methods, Mackenzie Construction successfully completed both phases of work on schedule and with minimal impact on local residents.

This project not only highlights the value of rapid response and engineering expertise but also showcases how thoughtful planning and sustainable practices can deliver high-impact solutions with lasting community benefits.

A tenant in the area reached out to Mackenzie Construction during the works to comment on the emergency repair,

“For the last few months, you have been carrying out repairs outside my property in Edinburgh on Trinity Road, fixing a burst sewage pipe. I just want to leave a note for your staff, they were really helpful and courteous at a time which understandably was quite frustrating for those of us who didn't have road access to our houses.”

Engaging the Community While Delivering Key Infrastructure Upgrades in Dunoon

Mackenzie Construction is currently delivering Treated Water Storage (TWS) works in Dunoon on behalf of Scottish Water, as part of the wider Strategic Projects Management Alliance (SPMA) programme. These essential works play a vital role in improving local water infrastructure but as with many TWS projects, the team has faced the challenge of operating within a residential area with limited access.

Despite the logistical hurdles, our team has made a conscious effort to ensure the project not only runs smoothly, but also positively impacts the local community.

Our on-site foreman, Stevie Lee, has been focused on community engagement, regularly updating nearby residents and donating pallets to locals and the Dunoon Foodbank.

Jonathan Park, our Community Liaison Officer, has also been visiting local residents to personally thank them for their patience during the project. We were proud to receive positive feedback from members of the community, including:

“The team have been fantastic. When I have driven by, they have always been really friendly and stopped what they were doing until I was safely past.”

In addition to our on-site efforts, the project has brought economic benefit to the area, with money being spent locally on lodging, ferry travel, materials, cafes, and shops.

At Mackenzie Construction, we strongly believe in giving back to the places where we live and work. We’re proud of our team's commitment to building strong community relationships in Dunoon and look forward to continuing this positive engagement on future SPMA projects.

“They’ve been great. Always polite when I’ve spoken to them.”

The Dunoon Foodbank also expressed their gratitude for the donation of pallets and plywood, saying:

“The Dunoon Foodbank is incredibly grateful

for

your very generous donation of plywood and pallets, which have been used to create a raised planter for our vegetable garden and to help preserve the exterior of our building."

Building Community at Mackenzie Construction

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week was community. At Mackenzie Construction, we recognise how vital community is in combating loneliness – a major factor impacting mental health. In the construction industry, where work is often demanding and time is frequently spent away from home, fostering connections and support among our people is more important than ever.

We pride ourselves on maintaining a family-feel culture where health and wellbeing are integral. At the heart of this is our commitment to bringing our people together through social and community-focused initiatives. Some of the key approaches we build and nurture our Mackenzie Construction community include:

Creating Collaborative Workspaces

We've invested in our offices and hubs to ensure we have welcoming, central spaces where teams can come together, collaborate and build connections.

Empowering Young People

Our Young Person’s Committee provides a platform for younger team members to communicate directly with our senior leadership, ensuring their voices are heard. The committee also organises social events to encourage connections beyond the workplace.

Hosting Social Events with Purpose

From charity fundraisers to company BBQs, we regularly bring people together in relaxed settings that foster camaraderie and support great causes.

Celebrating Together

Each year, we host annual training days and social events as a chance to reflect on the achievements and milestones, bringing the entire Mackenzie team together in celebration.

Impactful Partnerships

We’re proud of our partnerships with Paralympic Nordic skier Scott Meenagh and the Glasgow Warriors – both of whom inspire our team and share our values of resilience, teamwork, and community.

Supporting Mental Health

We care deeply about our people and are committed to ensuring they return home safely every day — not just physically, but mentally too. To support this, we have a fully trained team of internal mental health first aiders who are available to offer a listening ear or direct people to additional resources if needed.

In addition, we work closely with The Lighthouse Charity – a leading organisation in the construction industry providing mental health support, training, and a 24/7 helpline. They offer a critical lifeline for anyone struggling and we encourage all in our industry to utilise the resources they provide.

CHECK IN. On Yourself. On Others.

Launching our ‘Check In’ Internal Health Initiative

At Mackenzie Construction, our people are the foundation of everything we do. From the work we deliver to the standards we uphold, it all starts with our teams and how we look after one another.

This Men’s Health Week, we launched a new internal campaign, Check In.

This campaign encourages all of us to take a moment to check in — with ourselves and with the people we work alongside. It’s a reminder that health, in every sense, deserves attention before things reach a breaking point. Whether it’s something physical, something mental, or just a gut feeling that something isn’t right, there’s always a way to act early.

Why it matters?

Civil engineering can be physically demanding, mentally tough, and time-pressured. And while the sector has made progress, it’s still true that many people find it hard to speak up when something feels wrong.

Too often, we hear “I’m fine” when someone isn’t.

‘Check In’ is about recognising the early signs, taking small actions, and supporting each other before problems grow.

What’s involved?

Throughout Men’s Health Week and beyond our team have seen new materials and messaging to help embed this approach into everyday routines:

• Posters with prompts to check in on yourself and others

• Practical guidance on what signs to look out for

• Clear information on internal and external support

• Useful resources on how to look after yourself and others

Looking forward

Men’s Health Week gave us a moment to reflect but the message behind ‘Check In’ extends beyond this as we strive to build an open, supportive and sustainable working culture. This is a long term effort, focusing on small changes that can lead to safer, healthier teams and a stronger industry.

Charity of The Year

We are proud to announce that UK Men's Sheds Association has been selected as Mackenzie Construction’s Charity of the Year for 2025.

Men’s Sheds is a remarkable organisation that provides welcoming spaces for individuals to connect, share skills, and work on meaningful projects together. Their work plays a vital role in supporting mental health and wellbeing, combating loneliness, and building stronger communities.

We officially launched our fundraising for UK Men’s Sheds with a bake sale and raffle at the end of April – a big thank you to all involved in organising this and those who contributed to a fantastic cause.

At Mackenzie Construction, we believe in supporting causes that align with our values of collaboration, wellbeing, and community engagement. We are delighted to be working with Men’s Sheds throughout the year and look forward to making a tangible, positive impact through our partnership.

Local Steps for a Global Journey: Mackenzie Construction Walks the Talk for Health and Sustainability

The Mackenzie Construction team has officially wrapped up their inspiring step challenge with Scottish Water — and the results speak for themselves!

Over the course of the challenge, the team collectively walked an incredible 41,747,803 steps, covering 19,249.26 miles. That’s the equivalent of walking 77.3% of the Earth's Equator, highlighting just how far local steps can go when taken together.

Beyond fitness, the step challenge also made a significant environmental impact. By choosing to walk rather than drive, the team avoided an estimated 4,215.53 kilograms of CO₂ emissions — roughly the equivalent of offsetting 21,000L of diesel, cancelling out the emissions of 40+ concrete mixer truck loads.

Throughout the challenge, colleagues supported each other, logged their progress, and turned everyday

moments — from lunch breaks to weekend hikes — into opportunities to move more and connect with nature.

"It’s amazing what we’ve achieved together. This challenge has not only been great for morale, but it’s helped us all think more about the little changes we can make that have a big impact. At Mackenzie Construction, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions, with a 2040 net zero target, and this challenge has been one way in which we have been championing sustainability." said Nina Devaney, Health & Wellbeing Coordinator at Mackenzie Construction.

The Mackenzie team finishes the challenge with a renewed sense of well-being, stronger connections, and a tangible contribution to sustainability. Proof that when you put one foot in front of the other — and do it together — you really can go the distance.

Good Driver Recognition Scheme

We recently launched our Good Driver Recognition Scheme which will see all drivers who complete the Van App and have a driver rating of 90% or more being entered into a draw every three months. Congratulations to John Patrick and Marc Gillies on being the first winners!

HIE Campus Carpark Upgrade Works

Mackenzie Construction is delighted to have undertaken a project for the Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) at Inverness Campus completing carpark upgrade works. The contract, which commenced in February, included the following scope of work; design, earthworks, drainage, lighting, and surfacing. The project, being led by our dedicated team in the North, has now completed on-time.

This contract is particularly significant as it not only marks new client collaboration with HIE, but given the nature of the work, which involves both design and construction, the project team has effectively delivered a design and build service.

A key highlight is the sustainable approach adopted in partnership with a local third-party contractor, which involves recycling materials within the campus.

This initiative not only minimises off-site disposal costs but also contributes to a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with modern sustainability goals.

Beyond its technical and environmental benefits, this project serves as an important milestone in the company’s expansion within the North of Scotland. It strengthens the company’s reputation in the region, showcasing an ability to undertake a diverse range of civil engineering projects while reinforcing relationships with new clients in the North of Scotland.

Supporting Local Projects with Surplus Materials

We were delighted to see the surplus granite setts from our HIE Campus project finding a new purpose at Blackthorn Allotments, a local Inverness charity. Rather than letting the setts go to waste, we're happy they’ve found a new home supporting a fantastic local cause.

At Blackthorn Allotments, the granite will be repurposed in a variety of ways, from creating new paths and edging to building fire pits and raised beds.

Blackthorn Allotments Chairman, Andy Griffin, shared his appreciation:

“We are delighted to benefit from this generous donation from Mackenzie Construction following their work at Inverness Campus. Blackthorn Allotments Association is a self-supporting charity so donations of useful assets are always very welcome.”

Restoring Scotland’s Peatlands for a Net Zero Future

We are proud to be working on Scottish Water’s programme of peatland restoration. This work aims to restore damaged peatlands across Scotland — a vital step toward protecting our natural environment and supporting Scotland’s net zero future.

The process involves reprofiling eroded peat faces to return the landscape to a more natural state, allowing new vegetation to take root and helping to retain water in the land. Crucially, it also reduces the loss of organic matter into source waters and enhances the land’s ability to capture carbon from the atmosphere.

Operating in such remote locations presents logistical challenges, particularly with the extended off-road access required but the clear skies and impressive views certainly help. We’re also taking great care to avoid any disturbance to the local wildlife, ensuring the work is carried out responsibly and with minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem.

Great work by the team so far on a project that’s helping to make a real difference.

/ COMMUNITY Falkirk Flight Community Fund

Scottish Canals, in partnership with principal contractor Mackenzie Construction Ltd, are embarking on the biggest programme of works on the Forth & Clyde Canal in decades.

It has been 25 years since the historic Millennium Link Project re-opened and revitalised Scotland’s Lowland canals. The oak lock gates installed at that time are approaching the end of their operational lifetimes and need to be replaced.

Scottish Canals is investing more than £3.5 million in replacing 10 lock gates and conducting other essential maintenance work along the Falkirk Flight of the Canal throughout 2025 and early 2026. This work is needed to ensure the Canal can remain open, safe and navigable for another 25 years and beyond.

Comprising a fifth of Scotland’s water, Scottish Canals’ network of canals and reservoirs play a variety of roles in the life of local communities. They are vital blue-green corridors running through our towns and cities, providing a rich urban ecosystem, opportunities for culture and tourism, as well as space for people to pursue active travel and leisure.

To give back to the local community during the works programme, we are excited to have launched a community fund to support local groups, organisations and communities in the Falkirk area.

Applicants have been able to apply for a small cash sum to support their activity or an allocation of workdays from the Mackenzie Construction team. Applications closed on 20th June and we are reviewing applications and looking forward to working with local groups to support worthwhile causes.

Tree-planting with New Monkland Primary School

Mackenzie Construction is proud to have collaborated with Scottish Water Horizons, North Lanarkshire Council, and New Monkland Primary School in a recent tree-planting initiative in Glenmavis. This effort was part of our commitment to environmental sustainability, following a £2 million sewer upgrade project in the area.

The essential sewer system upgrade necessitated the removal of several trees to ensure the success of the critical infrastructure improvements. In response, we coordinated a tree-planting event in the local community green space to offset the environmental impact. Pupils from New Monkland Primary School played a key role in this initiative, working alongside our project team to plant new saplings and contribute to the regeneration of the local ecosystem.

At Mackenzie Construction, we recognise the importance of engaging with local communities and inspiring future generations. This tree-planting initiative not only restores green spaces but also provides

valuable educational opportunities for young people to learn about sustainability in a hands-on manner.

We extend our thanks to all participants, especially the enthusiastic pupils of New Monkland Primary School, for their invaluable contributions to this project. Together, we are fostering a sustainable future and enhancing the landscape at Glenmavis.

Supporting Hollybrook Academy with Wooden Spoon Charity

Mackenzie Construction is proud to have partnered with Wooden Spoon Charity to carry out improvement works at Hollybrook Academy.

Hollybrook Academy supports pupils with Additional Learning Needs to get the most out of school in a supportive, nurturing and ambitious setting.

enhancing the school day by creating a safe external space for the kids to play.

As a local contractor, Mackenzie Construction is proud to work within the communities that we live and work in. We are delighted to have worked closely with Hollybrook Academy and many other incredible partners to bring this inspiring project to completion.
