WhatAreDiversity, Equity,Inclusion, andBelonging (DEIB)?
There’sabrightlightshiningoninclusionthesedays.Companieseverywhere arelookingforwaystoimprovediversity,equity,inclusion,andbelonging (DEIB).InboundrecruitingexpertsDatapeopledefinewhatthoseconcepts reallymean.
Althoughthey’rerelatedandthedifferences betweenthemaresubtle,thedifferencesarethere. Andwhilediversity,equity,andinclusion(DEI) appearmostfrequentlytogetherthesedays,that’s alreadychanging.Itwasn’tlongagowhenitwas justdiversityandinclusionasapair.
It’shardtooverstatetheimportanceofDEIBorhowtheconceptsbehindithaveimpacted conversationsaroundhiring.Notlongago,jobseekersdidn’treallytalkaboutcorporatemoralcodes. Theydonow.Today’sjobseekersexpectatleastsomesocialconsciousnessfromtheiremployers. Andthey’renottheonlyones.Socially consciousinvestorsaremakinginvesting decisionsbasedoncorporatebehavior.They useasetofcriteriaforjudgingthatbehavior–environmental,social,andgovernance(ESG) standards.
Butthesearen’tjustsocialconsciousnessconcerns.Unethicalbehaviorinanyoneof theseareascansinkabusiness(thinkoilspill,paydiscriminationsuit,orhugeexecutive paygap).Andresearchshowsthatcompanieswithdiverseworkforcestendtodobetter thanthosewithout.
Diversityisthedemographicmakeupofaworkforce andtheendgoalofallDEIBefforts.Butit’snotjust gender.Itincludesgender,ethnicity,physicalability, age,nationalorigin,socioeconomicbackground,and religion,tonameafew.Plusanycombinationofthose aspects(intersectionality).
Inastudy,theDatapeopleR&DteamfoundthatDEIstatementsonjobpostings(i.e.,equal opportunityemployerstatements)impacttheperceivedinclusivenessofemployers.It’sa pledgetoDEIBandasignaltojobseekersthatthey’llbecomfortableatacompany. Equityisthelevelingofanunevenplayingfield.It meansprovidingeveryonewithequalaccessto opportunity,althoughitdoesn’tmeangivingeveryone thesamelevelofhelp.Becausenotallemployees(or jobseekers)arecomingfromthesamelevelof accessinthefirstplace.
Inclusionistheenvironmentacompanyfostersforcandidatesandemployees.An
inclusiveworkplaceisonewhereallcandidatesandemployeesfeelwelcome.It providescandidateswithequalopportunitiesforemployment,successinthejob,and advancementwithintheorganization. Althoughitcomesthirdintheacronym,inclusion maybethemostimportantfactorinDEIBefforts. Inclusivehiringprocesseswillnaturallyyieldmore diverseworkforces.Inclusiveemploymentpolicies willnaturallyyieldhappier,moresuccessful employeesofalldemographics.
BelongingistheemotionalstatethatisthegoalofDEIBefforts.Anorganization’s inclusiveprocessesaretheretomakeeveryonefeelwelcome.Butforsomeoneto feeltrulywelcome,theyneedtofeelwelcomeexactlyastheyare. Diversityisthedemographicmakeupofyour companyandtheendgoalofallDEIefforts.Equityis thelevelingofanunevenplayingfield.Inclusionisa welcomingenvironmentforcandidatesand employeesofallstripes.Andbelongingisafeelingof comfortataninclusiveworkplace.
