GenLUX I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten, and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I

landed in Paris to find the city covered in a beautiful white sparkly coat. It hasn’t snowed like this in Europe in more than two decades. Traffic was stopped for a while, and airports cancelled all flights. It’s a bit of a mess, but I love being here. Unlike LA, I have to say, I’m thrilled to see the streets and cars covered in snow for a change. I also love listening to the sound of the howling wind—this is how Christmas is supposed to be. I’m on my way to spend the holidays in Courchevel, the gorgeous ski resort in the French Alps. It’s been a while since I’ve skied, and I can hardly wait to feel the air rushing against my face and whipping around me as I zip down the slopes. Ah, euphoria! Naturally, I packed my cold-weather gear. Let’s startwith la pièce de résistance this winter: the ski coat or jacket.

20 GENLUX WINTER / 2010

They come in all colors and shapes, and they all have detachable hoods. Emilio Pucci has a colorful number that can be paired with solids like black, brown or even yellow, if you dare (p118). A must this winter, the ski jacket can be worn not only on the slopes, but also just browsing the cold streets of Gstatt, Aspen or Courchevel, and during the occasional cold Los Angeles night. White is the theme of this issue! We assembled beautiful items that make wonderful gifts. Check out the exceptional Christian Louboutin Big Lips tourterelle suede thigh boot and the gorgeous Perrin Paris 1893 Riva Ball iconic handbag (p114). One of my favorite items right now is the Vertu Constellation phone—chic and sleek (p32). Happy Holidays, my fashionable friends!

GENLUX and Katharine McPhee rang in the holidays (and the Holiday issue) with a glamorous winter event at Two Rodeo, sponsored by David Orgell, Frey Wille, and Dan Deutsch Optical Outlook. Rodeo Drive was transformed into a winter wonderland for the Snow 90210 Rodeo and UNICEF star-lighting ceremony hosted by GENLUX magazine. Snow flurries floated over the GENLUX party as horse-drawn sleighs shuttled guests up and down Rodeo Drive. Partygoers were serenaded by GENLUX cover girl Katharine McPhee with selections from her new Christmas album. Later, ‘American Idol’ contestant Allison Iraheta wowed the guests with a rockin’ performance to close out the night.

We go behind the scenes to reveal how our creative team achieved Emmy Rossum’s cover look! SKIN: “On Emmy’s beautiful skin I brushed a sheer layer of foundation. Then I highlighted the top of the cheekbone with Giorgio Armani fluid sheer for a fresh golden glow. To brighten the undereye area I blended in the YSL Touch Eclat— it’s lightweight and reflective. I powdered just the T-zone with the YSL powder.” EYE: “Her eyes are

soft and romantic. On the lid I used a fleshy shimmer called Night Star by NARS and on the outer corner and the base of the lashes I blended NARS Galopagos. I gave her lashes a generous coat of Hour Glass mascara followed by individual lashes in three lengths to blend with her own.

n the 1965 misog ynist comedy Ho w to Murder Your Wife, Jack Lemmon’s character, Stan, stands trial for poisoning his wife. At his defense, Stan puts his own lawyer, Harold, on the stand. Stan takes out a piece of chalk and draws an imaginary button on the railing of the jury stand. Then he asks Harold, “If you were able to push this button and your wife, Edna, would simply vanish, disappear, cease to exist, and nobody would ever know that you pushed it, would you do it?” If it was Ken Todd on the stand, would he have pushed it? Certainly not. His is the real-life fairy tale marriage to Lisa Vanderpump-Todd. He, the charming, successful global restaurateur, and she, the beautiful, witty, and level-headed star of the Bravo reality show T he Real House wives of Beverly Hills. The two met and were engaged after only three weeks, married after only three months, and have been happily together for almost three decades. “Yep, twenty-nine years, and I can honestly say that my children have never heard an argument between Ken and me,” Lisa says in her intoxicating British accent. “The home is a sanctuary. I may have my opinions, but I’ve never believed in arguing in front of kids. It’s very unsettling and makes them insecure. I take the job very seriously—I’ve always wanted to be the best wife and the best cook,” she says in an eerily Stepford Wives kind of way. Lisa drapes her size-2 figure in a classic CHANEL jacket. On it is a Balenciaga brooch. “I like tapered silhouettes. I like masculine clothes with feminine accessories. I don’t like frilly stuff.” She raises her foot to reveal red soles. So I say, ‘Louboutin boots!’ and I point to her super-wide belt, which I tell her is ‘roughly five inches.’ To which she hysterically retorts, “Ken told me that’s nine inches, Stephen.”

Surprisingly, it’s Ken who’s the clotheshorse. “Ken’s a better shopper for me than I am. He’ll go to Louboutin and have shoes made for me.” She pauses and hits me with an under-the-breath punchline: “I knew there was a reason I married him, and I just remembered it now.” When the two aren’t bouncing between milking their two cash cows—Sur Restaurant on Robertson in West Hollywood and Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills—Ken and Lisa live in the exclusive monster palace enclave known as Beverly Park. Their 17,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style home sits on three and a half beautifully manicured acres. “The house is way too big for me,” Lisa admits. “The closet is ridiculous—it’s like seven hundred square feet. But it’s like a handbag: the bigger the bag you get, the more you’ll fill it up. When I first had that closet I said I’d never fill it up.” And now? “It’s filled up,” she sighs. I pop two questions about T he Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Is it really unscripted? “Yes, you often forget the crew is there. You can’t say ‘Stop! Cut!’ It’s genuine and sometimes it’s hard to watch.” And are all of you really friends? “I like some more than others. But that’s life. If you put people together for six months, things naturally evolve. There are some tense situations, but I tried to remain objective and composed.” If giving back is one of life’s true rewards, Ken and Lisa have amassed yet another fortune. Every week their restaurants feed the homeless, and Lisa can often be found serving. “There but by the grace of God goes any one of us. There are forty to a hundred thousand people on the street every night. Every business I’m involved with has a philanthropic side to it.” Ken and Lisa also wholesale wines under the Villa Blanca brand with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. The Frank Geary–designed facility in Nevada is being planned as a national resource for the most current research and scientific information for the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). It will also focus on prevention, early detection and education. Surprisingly, Lisa Vanderpump herself is no pampered diva. Need some proof ? “I never have my hair blown out. I hate having my nails done. Normally I do my own nails.” She lowers her voice and divulges: “You will die: I wash and blow dry my own hair. And do you know who cut my hair the last time? My housekeeper. With the kitchen scissors. I swear. I said, ‘Cut it around the bottom.’ After she finished I told her, ‘You know, it’s longer on the right than it is on the left,’ and she said, ‘No, Ms. Lisa, that’s your head!’” So what’s Lisa’s advice for keeping a marriage on track? “I say move his socks around so he feels he can’t live without you.” G

Lisa Vanderpump’s dog obsession is blogger fodder. Even during our interview, the phone rings with a message that a Pekingese is about to be put down, and can she adopt it? “I’m obsessed with my dogs,” she admits as she scrolls down the message. “Please don’t let there be a photo. I pamper my dogs, they’re my baby substitutes, but I’m honest about that.” Her dog Jiggy has his own blog on Bravo.com and 5,000 followers on Twitter.

E

mmy Rossum gazes up from the makeup chair at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Her porcelain-white complexion frames warm, Bambi-like eyes. She’s wearing a delicate Valentino couture gown that clings perfectly to her lean, five-foot-eight, size-2 frame. With a slight New York accent and a bit of Broadway bravado, she offers a new take on an old line: “There’s always a hitch, but the snow must go on!”

T

he contraption that was intended to blow snowflakes over our winter wonderland set for Emmy’s photoshoot is AWOL—reportedly having met its demise on a local freeway. The accident sends a silent wave of panic. Nobody is saying much. Photographer Jon Cottam keeps things positive with one word: “Photoshop,” he chirps in his disarming British accent. Emmy’s journey through stage, film, recording, and now television, started when she was only a second-grader. Her prep-school music teacher, sensing her musical prowess, urged Emmy to try out for the opera. So she did, and at age seven became a member of the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus. “It was such an escape from the boring, constricted, nine-tothree ‘girl’s world’ that I just didn’t fit into,” she shares. “Here I was, this weird, freaky musical girl, missing a lot of school to attend rehearsals for La Boheme and Car men.” So Emmy had to make a decision: school or theater. “Fortunately, my mom let me pick theater.” She went on to graduate high school through Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth. Clearly, Emmy chose the right path. I listen intently as she expresses her passion for live theater: “I love the theater in New York! To feel the energy in the audience. You’re seeing something that will never be recreated—ever again. That performance, and those actors’ feelings and that timing and those moments that are so reachable and so present and so touchable…and somehow it always feels like the holidays. It’s home when I walk into the opera. It feels like home at Christmas.” In 2004, at the age of 18, Emmy landed the prized role of Christine Daaé in the film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. Her brilliant performance earned a Golden Globe nomination. On the red carpet, she made ever one’s best-dressed list in a stunning strapless Ralph Lauren gown.

Her personal style? “Feminine, classic, New York, sexy—but not overtly so.” She wears Donna Karan, Dior, Ralph Lauren, Phillip Lim 3.0, and Lela Rose. She adores Pour La Victoire shoes and names the Colette boutique in Paris her all-world favorite. “I absolutely love that place! They have Alexander McQueen there. They have super-cute and tech-y stuff and cool things to buy for gifts. I’m feeling in a very Paris-y mood today. I want to go there right now and get some macaroons at Ladurée, walk in the Bois de Boulogne. We could go together, it’d be a lot of fun.” Emmy is about as annoyingly joyful as they come. “I love everything in life,” she declares. “I love eating. I love laughing. Everyone will tell you I have the loudest laugh—people think it’s a joke. Like I’m kidding. I sing loud. You never know when your last meal or your last laugh is going to be—hopefully, it’s not for 50 years—so be happy every day.” Winning is built into her DNA. Or might it be her fear of losing? “I’m very competitive. I cry if I lose at Monopoly. It’s all fun, but yeah, I hate to lose,” she confesses. “I remember when I was eleven I cried when I lost at mini golf.” Then she brings up another fear. “I love completely, but I’m always scared that somehow it’s not working because…um, it hasn’t yet. And because my parents split up right after I was born, so I always have a little bit of fear.” Coincidentally, on the day of our interview the Internet is abuzz about Emmy and Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz’s split. What the sound-bite mongers didn’t know is that the couple had amicably called it quits more than two months prior, proving Emmy’s proficiency at maintaining her private life. Likewise, when I ask for a comment, all I get is a handful of crickets. Emmy and her friends deal with their personal problems in a most unusual way. “If any of my best friends is having a boy issue or an emotional issue, she’ll call me and say, ‘I need closet time.’ So

we’ll text all of our friends ‘closet time.’ That means to show up at seven and bring clothes. Everyone brings their dogs and their old clothes…and we’ll open a bottle of wine and sit in my walkin closet where we talk and cry through everything. And try old clothes on. So it’s a simultaneous therapy session and clothes-swap. Very therapeutic.” Emmy admits that she’s looking, but not really. But if she were, what would someone so young, beautiful, successful, charming and charitable be looking for in a guy? “Kindness. A best friend. Somebody who is creative and whom I can admire. Creativity is so sexy. Someone who is nice. He could be a museum curator, or an astronaut, or even a banker. Anyone who’s good at what he does appeals to me. A politician. Who knows?” She catches herself, “Well, probably not a politician.” Next on her to-do list is television. Emmy plays Fiona alongside

William H. Macy and Joan Cusack in Shameless. In this remake of the original British show of the same name, Macy plays a narcissistic alcoholic with six kids—each required to financially pull their own weight. “It’s grounded in feelings. It’s an uproarious comedy with heart.” Asked to look into the crystal ball, twenty years from now Emmy sees herself married with kids and running a production company that creates films and music that contribute something to the world. “And I hope I can have a ranch that I can escape to.” She pauses to add a dash of humility. “This is totally fairy tale. I hope I’m still doing work that I believe in and that excites me and challenges me. And I hope I still have the same friends, and I hope that my mother is still alive.” And in the end? “I’m hoping for a happy ending,” she says with a loud laugh. “I hope there’s a heaven with a swimming pool, family, and lots of pretty dresses…and nobody hurts.” G

Niki Sabet is part dadaist, part fluxus artist, and part sculptor. She creates art that evokes questions about the sexual, political and financial struggle for power and other such esoteric concepts. Here we catch her in art of another kind—fashion.

Niki Sabet, artist and sculptor. What’s your background? Half French, half Persian—Fersian. I grew up in Grenoble, France. I graduated from high school when I was sixteen and started traveling the world—Asia, Europe, South Africa. I studied psychology, but after my first year I switched to interior architecture. In 2010 I moved to sunny Los Angeles. I started drawing the moment I could hold a pencil, and began wood carving when I was eight. My parents were quite laid back in letting me play with sharp tools. What are you currently working on? I’m finishing my latest series, “Chromes of Passion,” and I’m in the pre-production phase of an international traveling installation to raise awareness for the protection of tigers.

Who are your art heroes? I love Dadaists and the Surrealists. For me they represent a movement when artists stopped trying to please the crowd. Camille Claudel is one of my favorites. What’s in your handbag? A purple Louis Vuitton wallet, iPhone, iPad, John Galliano sunglasses, Beauté by Beau Nelson lip gloss in Skin Trade—the best one out there. Paul Smith ‘Extreme’ perfume— I’ve been wearing it forever. It’s classic with a twist. Pens and Sharpies. Jana water. Look Ma hand cream by Bath and Body Works. Very important, since I work with harsh chemicals and rough machinery. Where can our readers see your new works? The newest collection is on my website, nikisabet.com. The Luxe Tue is currently at Unici Casa in Culver City. What’s next for you? More art. International exhibitions, functional art designs, a book about my art. I guess the world, then the universe.

Meet the Bloggers: Fashion’s New Voice.

A

midst the throngs of cats playing keyboards on Yo u Tu b e and the camera muggings cluttering Facebook, real influence in fashion is emerging on the internet. Fashion bloggers are stepping into the forefront to become the new influencers. There are bloggers who take fashion, twist it, and then write about relationships. There are bloggers who high-

light their favorite designer’s looks and then pick out their favorite new pieces from Target. There are bloggers who post party photos of pretty young people wearing logo tees with Marc Jacobs bags. There truly are no rules. There’s a whole world of fun bloggers out there, but here are some who fly a little under the radar...and just maybe on the brink of a dazzling explosion. valli dress, Roberto Ca n ima $1495, Ne y verl e B s, u rc Ma 50-5900 -5 Hills, 310 otti shoe, Cesare Paci Pacre $755, Cesa ills, rly H ve e B i, tt o ci 220 310-273-3 e bik B th e Glynn lace, ck e n in a ch dison, LA, $365, Ma 930 310-275-1 g, n rin o ss a W Erin volina, LA, $165, Dia 341 310-550-1

Ami Gan, My Fashion Database, myfdb.com, blog.myfdb.com How has blogging changed fashion? It’s put fashion directly into the hands of consumers and enthusiasts. There’s no lag time between seeing trends on the runway and emulating them on the streets. Thanks to bloggers, and their love of social media, the second a designer’s collection is released, it’s blasted all over the Internet—literally shortening a trend’s lifecycle. What’s the hardest part about blogging? Blogger’s block. It’s easy to get burned out when you’re on a deadline or reporting about timesensitive events such as Fashion Week…er... month. The best way to combat this, besides caffeine, is to go back to the blogging basics and focus on what you like or don’t like about a particular collection, editorial, cover, or ad campaign. How do you promote your blog? I promote the MyFDB blog through our Twitter account, @MyFDB, and Facebook. We have a strong social media following, so a lot of our traffic stems from these sources. We also reach out to the industry for exclusive interviews and contests—all sure-fire ways to increase traffic and engage new readers. Who are your favorite designers? I have love for established and up-and-coming designers. I’m currently coveting looks from Sarah Burton [Alexander McQueen’s new creative director], Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung, Christopher Bailey of Burberry Prorsum, Marc Jacobs because his designs for Louis Vuitton are amazing, Karl Lagerfeld—genius, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Michael Kors, Angela Missoni, John Galliano, and pretty much anything Christophe Decarnin puts out for Balmain! Oh…and if I had to pick shoes to go with all these haute clothes, they’d be from Nicholas Kirkwood.

What do you wear when you blog? When I’m in the MyFDB office, blogging away, I like to be comfortable. So leggings, comfy shirts, and oversized sweaters are a must. However, heels and a blazer will make almost anything officeappropriate if need be.

Sara M., a.k.a. Sara Millionaire Waitin’ Round 2 Be A Millionaire (wr2bam.com) How has blogging changed fashion? It makes fashion accessible to people who previously might have felt alienated or intimidated by it, and often those are the people who are making the most daring choices. I like to think that fashion bloggers represent “real” people. Designers are starting to take notice. What’s the hardest part about blogging? Constantly coming up with fresh content and feeling pressure to be fashionably “on” at all times! How do you promote your blog? I don’t, really. My blog’s growth has mainly come out of my relationships with other bloggers.

Who are your favorite designers? Oh, God, it’s so hard to choose just a few! I love everything Miuccia Prada does, both for Prada and Miu Miu. Christopher Bailey has been absolutely blowing my mind with Burberry Prorsum for the past few seasons. I’m a huge fan of Lanvin and Balmain, and I’m also into a lot of the newer labels that have that kind of rock ‘n’ roll sensibility, like Vena Cava and Cushnie et Ochs. I could go on and on.

What do you wear when you blog? A leather jacket and a liberal spritzing of Kiehl’s Original Musk.

How has blogging changed fashion? People can identify with a much wider range of voices and sub-cultures now. Blogging’s made loving fashion accessible to just about anyone. And of course, blogging fashion has the same edge that blogging any kind of news does. No other medium will ever be able to top the speed at which it’s delivered to the public.

How has blogging changed fashion? I think bloggers are the “new curators” in fashion. We curate and even create content, and at lightning speed. And because blogging is so flexible and inclusive of varied audiences, we’re beginning to see fashion reflect the same.

What’s the hardest part about blogging? Probably dealing with people who don’t respect the medium or understand its importance. When I first started blogging very personally, the most difficult thing was deciding what percentage of my life I was willing to write unabashedly about. I think I’ve landed on about twenty percent. The trick is to make it seem like a hundred percent. How do you promote your blog? Through my readership, word of mouth, and using platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc. And I never say no to anything, whether it be a twentysecond spot on Tosh.0 or showing up to my friend’s live show to tell a story. Who are your favorite designers? Jeremy Scott, of course. I love color. I haven’t been nutso about DVF’s last couple of collections, but her wrap dresses make my heart sing. What do you wear when you blog? Jeans and a flannel shirt or a Brooks Brothers or Hanes men’s v-neck T-shirt.

What’s the hardest part about blogging? Keeping up. The day-to-day world moves a mile a minute. But the blogosphere is even faster. There’s so much stuff to sift through, regardless of your location, time zone, weekends or moods. It’s overwhelming. It’s an effort to stay balanced—on the blog, and in my life. How do you promote your blog? The yello! blog gets promoted through all your various social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, but also does a lot with events around town. The blog, nurtured through and by Smashbox Studios, is all about Los Angeles creative culture, and then some. But in order to understand and support the community, you have to show up. The blog has its own photo booth, sponsored by Smashbox, that you’ll see at various events. Guests stop by, get their photos taken, and find their dapper selves on the blog. It’s a lot of fun. What do you wear when you blog? Chloe perfume.

Almie Rose, Apocalypstick apocalypstick.com, genlux.com

What do you wear when you blog? My 1985 Phil Collins “No Jacket Required” T-shirt and a smug look of satisfaction. Also, I never wear pants.

How has blogging changed fashion? It’s made me more aware of beautiful things that I can’t afford. No, but most of the fashion blogs I look at are of girls around my age and shape, and it’s amazing what they put together with things from H&M and maybe one big designer piece. I find that inspiring. There’s a girl out there who lives in France, and her name is Betty (blogdebetty.com), and when I found her, I had bangs at the time, and it was like finding my French doppelganger. I think the way she dresses is more interesting than ninety percent of what I see in fashion magazines. And of course her look is more accessible than what I would see in Vogue. What’s the hardest part about blogging? Not getting frustrated. With everything—like writer’s block, or worrying that what I write won’t find an audience. Also, I struggle with how much of my personal life I should put out there. But people like that stuff. I just want to give the people what they want. I am basically the perfect victim of blogging. How do you promote your blog? I watch “The Secret” every night before bed. I wrote about how no one dates anymore, and someone picked it up on their Tumblr, and then someone else Tumbl’d it, and then the next thing I knew I had a sudden crop of readers. I didn’t need to promote it much at first, but I like to get the word out there through Twitter, Facebook, networking with other bloggers, making Web videos, letting my mom tell everyone she meets, and so forth. I’m thinking about aggressively stickering the city with Apocalypstick decals, but I don’t want to get fined and I’m too lazy. Who are your favorite designers? Marc Jacobs, mostly because he’s the only one I can afford. And Kansai Yamamoto, for Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust tour.

The winter season is a time of white serenity. Wear Rick Owens’ stark shapes or Christian Dior’s soft and sexy numbers. Mix them all up and remember to grow into a more caring human being. It was exciting to find so many delicious whites. Almost anything goes nowadays, so feel free to explore the lighter and brighter shades of your character. Through the whitest moments you will see glimpses of strong colour for spring. A hint here and there. In most of Europe you will need rugs and warm coats but the beauty of Los Angeles is that you able to take advantage and wear some of the exciting spring collections. Use some real and fake diamonds and morph into a snow-white queen.

All you need is Love —George Blodwell I particularly love this time of year. Mostly because it’s the time when most of us have the opportunity to get in touch with our hearts. In my daily duties running around town, I’m often asked about where to find this or that. One frequent request is, “Who is a good men’s hairdresser?” There are a few notable ones out there, and it is my pleasure to give you the scoop. Gerald Niederwieser at the Argyle Salon & Spa is a master. I personally watched his extraordinary attention to detail, playing with the hair before cutting it to see all the nuances of how the hair fell and where.

How The Hell Do People Get Over This? —Almie Rose

while ago I made a satirical short titled How To Get Over A Break-Up. My suggestion was to drink lots of Stoli. Of course, if you followed this advice, the thing you’re most likely to get out of this method is not closure, but a hangover. And if only getting over a breakup were as easy as getting over a hangover. Some days I listen to my inner Paul McCartney, who says, “I’ve got to admit it’s getting better, a little better all the time.” But then I’ll have a dream where me and my ex are back together and I wake up happy and then confused, and then I move on with the rest of my day. On these days it’s easier to listen to my inner John Lennon, who says, “It can’t get no worse.” This duality of Lennon and McCartney—of positive and negative—produced some of the greatest songs ever written. I’m not going to flatter myself, but I like to think that maybe my similar struggles between happy and sad produce some of my best writing. I think we’re all at our best when we’re able to balance our tragedies with our triumphs, as long as we let our triumphs win. If you’re an alcoholic writer or drug-addled painter, however, your success may lie in wallowing in your tragedies. Isn’t it interesting how much profit there is in sadness? For if we never felt heartache, we would never have movies like Annie Hall. Thanks to Woody Allen, I haven’t found a more perfect explanation for why we keep falling in love even though it may cause us tremendous pain: “we need the eggs.” Anyway, because I need eggs, I’ve been dating. I’ve dated a couple of musicians (proving I don’t learn from my mistakes), a photographer, and a horror-film director who claims that he has a subscription to Genlux and is now reading my column (we’ll see). I think I’m ready to date again, but I’m usually wrong. The great thing is that I’m okay with this. I no longer beat myself up for not being ready. I have a lot going in my life and I feel more like I’m followed by sunshine than rain clouds. Still, if

the memory-erasing procedure from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were a real thing, I would have gotten it yesterday. A lot of people don’t understand why. “Aren’t you a stronger person now? Don’t you remember the happy times?” No. I remember someone telling me they loved me and then leaving me. Please, give me brain damage. Please, punch me in the head. But this isn’t a real procedure and there aren’t any shortcuts in getting over a difficult breakup. And I have to move on. If a hurricane destroyed my house, I wouldn’t be mad at the hurricane. That’s not going to help me and it’s not going to rebuild my house. This is something that I’m realizing and something that keeps me going. People tell me that time helps. I don’t think that time helps. Time just distances you from what happened. Time isn’t even a real thing. If you’ve been in a traumatic car accident and you’re asked to recall it, you’ll feel like it happened yesterday. If time were as good a healer as everyone says, then we would never feel pain again. We would never make dumb mistakes. I don’t understand the people who break up and then get back together. Especially people who marry, divorce, and then marry each other again. Though, admittedly, I find something oddly romantic in it. It’s like admitting we’re so screwed up that we can’t live without each other. Elizabeth Taylor knows what I’m talking about. So, I’m letting this go. I am letting you go. I’m done. And besides, Paul was always my favorite Beatle anyway. And John? You are a jerk. Goodbye.

Now in her third decade at the company, Lubov Azria is excited about the future. What projects are you working on?

gENLUXshop Natural Beauty JAIMIE ALEXANDER is a beautiful girl who pays no attention to her good looks. This straightforward young lady doesn’t waste time with the usual Hollywood nonsense. Then, in the spring, she’ll star in the much anticipated Marvel epic Thor in the role of Sif opposite Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. She also recently wrapped production on the indie dramedy Loosies, with Peter Facinelli and Joe Pantoliano. Not bad, not bad at all! How would you describe your personal style?

White Nights —Vonetta Encarnacao & Sherryl White If home is where the heart is, the place where we keep our bed is the lifeblood of the space we inhabit. Within this chamber we breathe, dream, rejuvenate our bodies, and create love. Awaken to the sweet mysteries of life, or take your next slumber in an inspiring environment that enhances the luxurious lightness of being. Color and tone have proven to be great mood enhancers. Luminescent white is the color of light; bask in its glow and levitate in the pure elegance it represents. Here we have set out ten glorious ideas to turn up the heat in the bedroom. With the setting of the sun, peel away the day’s concerns by slipping into something very slinky. Agent Provocateur’s Classic Corset is fit to be untied. Next, step into a dreamy shoe that brings out the woman in you: Jimmy Choo’s glittering five-inch Niagra heels provide the perfect balance between naughty and nice. Gaze at the stars with Minotti’s shimmery Ugolino “X” chandelier. The brilliantly faceted hand-cut crystals are so hypnotic they may call to you to start swinging from them. If you’re not in the mood yet, these daring gems are sure to bring out your animalistic nature. Enhance your erogenous zone

with edgy diamond and blackened 18K gold earrings, featuring a spider in whose grasp a white pearl hangs. Pair it with the ring to go all out. Once dressed, bask in the glow of Dayna Decker’s sculptural Aston candle in sleek white lacquer. The long wick is specially designed to mimic a warm hearth— its flame should help take you far, far away from life’s stresses. Then glide into the pièce de résistance: the “circle of life” bed from ddc. Its softly rounded lines echo the curve of a woman’s body, and its boldness beckons you to embrace its glamour. Top it off with a sumptuous faux fur throw. Then rest your pretty little head on this exotic beaded pillow by Sachin + Babi for Ankasa. Once you’ve set the scene, fill this gracefully cut decanter with your favorite wine, and raise a toast to a very hot night. Whether alone to relax and unwind, or partnered for fun, may the night be forever young…

GETAWAY: Riviera Maya

gENLUXshop

white sand SAmia arslane finds paradise just a few hours away.

P

aradise does exist, and it’s only a few hours from LA. Nestled along an idyllic coastline on the dramatic Yucatan Peninsula is the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya, Mexico. I’ve always appreciated the Mandarin Oriental hotels for their peaceful atmospheres and Asian-inspired themes—they suit me à la perfection. But of all their properties that I’ve visited through the years, I have to say the Riviera Maya is my favorite. This place is exactly how I imagine Heaven to look. Best of all, it was my birthday! The hotel opened about two and a half years ago. It’s a luxurious hideaway set on 36 lush, secluded acres of tropical forests and surrounded by the crystal-clear blue Caribbean. Here you will find protected mangrove reserves, tranquil lagoons, babbling streams, and a spectacular cenoté—a deep freshwater reservoir sacred to the ancient Mayans

112 GENLUX WINTER / 2010

that serves as the resort’s centerpiece. Upon arrival, I instantly felt a sense of peace…like I was transported into another world—another dimension— where everything is quieter and slower. True to its organic style of natural architecture, the lobby is located outside and is decorated with bamboo and exotic hardwoods. Ceiling fans spin at a slow, rhythmic pace while below, exotic fish gently navigate through the waters that encircle the lobby. The charming staff welcomes you with a cool, refreshing beverage created with green tea and exotic spices from the region. I was instantly addicted. Waking to the surreal white sand beaches, the clear blue water, and the island’s sweet aroma was intoxicating. From my suite, I could see a beautiful pond to which I had direct access. It was unforgettable, not so much because of its breathtaking beauty, but more for what was living in it. The day before, the nice hotel clerk

took me to my room to explain all the amenities. That’s when he casually mentioned the crocodile (or was it an alligator?) that lives in the pond. I started to laugh, thinking he was joking. He wasn’t. But I was told not to worry because, apparently, only a few people had spotted the animal since the hotel opened. The spa experience at the Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya is one of the world’s best. From the moment I walked in, I was speechless. The spa is the centerpiece of the guest experience and an integral part of what makes this luxurious hideaway the ultimate retreat. It was the best birthday I’ve had in a long time. Fortunately, I never saw the reptile. Come to think of it, I’m not even sure he really existed—it might have been a dream…like this trip was. The Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya: the sanctuary of tranquility.

gENLUXshop Catching Up With Tadashi Shoji He has dressed many of today’s hottest icons, from Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to Oprah. Designer Tadashi Shoji sits down with COURTNEY FORTUNE to discuss his muse and prove that indeed, even Mother Nature can be glamorous.

Black pleated georgette and lace dress, $348

Evening sand fanpleated tulle gown, $808

Ecru mini paillette one-shoulder dress, $308

T

adashi Shoji is standing next to his collection prior to his presentation in Bloomingdale’s, Santa Monica Place. Amidst the hustle of his team, the fashion, ruffles and beading, he is perfectly calm. Best known for luxury gowns and an impressive celebrity following, the designer speaks about his work the way a fine chef might describe one of his ingredients. “Make sure you take a very close look at the material,” he says, waving his hand over the racks of dresses, motioning me to touch them. He cites the inspiration for his new collection as the patterns, shapes, and textures he saw in the aerial views of his travels. As we walk by the racks of dresses, he points out the beaded lining of mountains and the movement of wind. In his portfolio there are photos of the desert and delicately winding tree branches. When I ask what intrigues him most about nature, he quietly replies, “I enjoy the raw forms of nature and the sensations I feel from the elements. The colors are rich and they sparkle. Such a Tadashi Shoji eggunique and beautiful texture!”

plant degrade mini paillette long-sleeve gown, $548

What makes this collection different from his previous ones? “The palette is more muted; I experimented with new techniques and treatments this season as well. I wanted to create a feeling that returned to more basic inspiration.” A woman pulls a purple long-sleeve cocktail dress covered

in dark metallic sequins. “My collection is made up of very different shapes and mixed media, so on the rack some women may see it as a risk. But then when they put it on, they are always surprised by their transformation.” I ask the designer how this transformation is realized by the female figure and what he notices in his patrons. Shoji sees the woman he designs for as independent and self-sufficient. He aims to celebrate her inner strength by creating pieces that do not overwhelm her, but instead highlight and emphasize that strength. “Just zip it up and go,” he says. “I design for the woman who doesn’t want to deal with uncomfortable materials.” Shaking his head, he dismisses the word ‘pretty.’ He’s not interested in just ‘pretty.’ Rather, he offers what he defines as ageless concepts that guarantee a stunning performance on any figure. And this is what drives Tadashi Shoji to create and maintain a presence in the fashion industry. Does he have different feelings about seeing his work on the red carpet versus walking down the isle or on the street? “I am not just making fashion for the fashion industry; I want to design for real women—to make them feel happy about themselves. If I only design for the runways or the red carpet, it won’t sustain me. I am interested in the woman who is meeting people, who is dancing, and ready for wherever the night takes her.” All styles available at Tadashi Shoji, South Coast Plaza, 877-Tadashi

Beauty HAIR DO’s

gENLUXshop HAIR TODAY The pros weigh in on what’s hot and what’s not this season. —Dawn Shand Johnson TRENDS IN Color “As the weather cools down, we tend to look a bit pale and washed out, so we start seeing darker, richer, and warmer hair colors. I’m personally not a fan of the one-solid-color look. Even when my clients decide to go darker for winter, I leave the ends untouched; that way, the hair has a natural, grown-out look, which is the perfect transition from summer into winter. Red tones are also seen more during winter because they warm up the skin and soften the face. Trends can be fun, but they don’t work for everyone. My goal is to enhance the natural beauty and color of the hair. I like to keep the natural hair color as the foundation and base and add highlights to give dimension. One approach I’ve helped to popularize is maintaining the lightness at the bottom of the hair. My client Rachel Bilson is a great example of this look. It’s pretty on everyone, creates body and movement, and maintains the health of the hair. And most of all, it’s very low-maintenance.” —Denis De Souza, colorist, Andy LeCompte Salon, 616 N. This winter, warm up with Russia’s number-one premium vodka, Russian Standard, crafted according to famed Russian chemist and inventor Dmitri Mendeleev’s 1894 vodka formula, which resulted in the standardization of vodka’s alcoholic content by the Russian state. This Russian Court cocktail was created by Dushan Zaric of NYC’s lauded cocktail bar Employees Only: Pour honey and vodka into a mixing glass and stir until honey dissolves. Then pour into a champagne flute and top off with Prosecco. Finish with a dash of orange bitters and garnish with an orange twist.

KEEP IT GREEN—George Blodwell

It has been exactly one year since I had a synthetic sod lawn installed at my house in Hollywood, and it looks as fabulous now as it did then. I researched many companies before deciding on Artificial Grass Liquidators to do the job, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. I’ve had lawn parties, badminton matches, storms, heat waves, endless guests in high-heeled shoes, my dogs doing their daily rounds—even the occasional photo shoot—and it continues to amaze everyone who comes here. Naturally, it needs some basic maintenance: leaf-raking, poop patrol, and a hose-down every now and then, but nothing like the weekly crews of gardeners with their lawn mowers and trimmers that I have to endure from my neighbors. And, goodness me, I save mega gallons of water! Of course, all that is such a selfish satisfaction compared to the moral significance of switching to a waterless lawn in this part of the world. It is a fact that 68% of the water consumed domestically in Los Angeles goes to watering our lawns and gardens! This means that if we switched

en masse to waterless lawns, our water crisis would all but disappear! Yes, in this harsh economic climate, there are financial pros and cons about going waterless, but the cons are relatively insignificant. Going waterless pays for itself in a few years with lower water bills and almost zero garden maintenance. The city of LA will even give you a tax break on your water bill. The lawn itself is far more durable than delicate grass. Perhaps the earthworms would be the biggest losers, but their gain is predicated on the massive amount of water needed to keep their food source moist. It would behoove the city fathers to consider installing waterless lawns in all the public places. The manufacturers proclaim that their product even performs successfully under the rigors of professional football fields, public parks, and so on. This is a moral issue that goes well beyond the horrifying economics of water shortages into the arena of conservation and responsible stewardship of our fragile ecosystem. For info on synthetic sod, visit Artificial Grass Liquidators.com, or call Bob Delosier at 909-478-4791.

Genlux Out-of-Towner

Asked where she finds inspiration for her collections, Vera Wang says, “A film, a painting, an artist, a book, a story.” For her Ready-toWear Resort 2011 collection, she drew from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, while her Ready-to-Wear Spring 2011 collection was informed by Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. ¶ Such a wide-ranging palette of inspirations helps to explain the scope of her work, and the growth of her fashion empire is due in no small part to this boundless creativity. ¶ The New York–based designer opened her flagship store on Madison Avenue in 1990. Her bridal designs elevated the genre—before long, if you were someone who was anyone, you were saying your vows in a Vera Wang gown. But since then, the Vera Wang name has evolved to embody a lifestyle aesthetic, complete with not only a readyto-wear line, but eyewear, footwear, fragrance, bedding, mattress, china, crystal, silver, fine papers, luggage, and hospitality collections, among others. ¶ So with the close of 2010, which marks the 20th anniversary of her brand, what’s left to conquer? The designer has her sights set on Asia in particular—and the world in general. “I would love a global presence,” she says. —By Shannon L.
