Last Saturday, as employees, security, and customers looked on, 14 hooded thieves charged into Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills and made off with CHANEL products. Almost weekly, we see videos capturing these brazen broad-daylight heists—presumably happening without consequences.

More disheartening than thieves recklessly ripping off goods is seeing the faces of the sales associates who’ve carefully folded the scarves, polished the glass cases, cleaned the leather goods, and thoughtfully merchandised the fashion to create a positive experience for shoppers—all destroyed in seconds. Are we systematically being primed for an Amazononly world?

Inside this Issue: Artificial Intelligence remains top of mind, so we bring you two AI-assisted fashion stories.

I traveled to uber-shooter Erik Almäs’s studio in Sonoma for a shoot with Elite LA model Kari Riley. Erik has long been one of the best photo composi-

tors using traditional means, so now, with AI-generated backgrounds, he takes things to a rockstar new level (p74).

In LA, my other go-to photo/illustration master, Andrew Matusik, delivered a series using the same technique. His subject—model and actress Karissa Yates— was photoshopped into AI desert backgrounds. First-time

GENLUX stylist Julia Varavkina (a former Russian Vogue editor), makeup artist Caroline Hernandez (CloutierRemix), hairstylist Robert Steinken (Celestine Agency), and nail specialist Amber Studer rounded out the stellar glam team (p58).

In New York, first-time GENLUX photographer Alana Stutsky teamed with stylist Jessie Ajluni and model Koval (The Industry NY) to create beautiful images featuring diamonds, diamonds, and more diamonds (p42).

When we had the chance to shoot at the La Brea Tar Pits, we jumped at the opportunity. We shot two stories: One with museum president Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga (p104) and one with model Isabella Stoll (p64). Unbeknownst to us at the time of booking a model, it turns out Isabella is a huge dinophile, so to her mind, seeing the wooly mammoth exhibit and real archeological dig far outshined any of the fantastic fashion by CHANEL, Armani, or Dolce&Gabbana.

MY PASSION FOR PICKLEBALL DICTATED THE NEED FOR SUN PROTECTION AND A FUNCTIONAL FASHION COLLECTION WAS BORN.

There was a lot of sadness for me during Covid. I lost my father in January 2020, my nephew six months later, and my sister six months after that. The world was at a standstill, and everyone was afraid of everything. Gardening helped me through the beginning of the pandemic, and then I found a sport called pickleball—it ended up being my silver lining.

I started playing almost every day, though no matter how much sunscreen I put on, I noticed the damage from the sun. I tried wearing longsleeve lightweight shirts but could only wear them for a short time. To avoid the sun, I would try to play only in the morning and evening. My friends who liked to play were in the same boat. I found different visors that could protect my face, and I started wearing bandanas, sun sleeves, and boleros. Women would come up to me and ask me where I got them and wanted them too. That’s what gave me the idea to start BESO Shade.

I’ve been raising my children for 36 years, and I turned 64 this year, so why not start a new chapter? So here I am. It started with a few visors, sun sleeves, and a bandana, and now I’ve created an entire line called BESO Shade, besoshade.com —made right here in sunny California! I’ve done my homework. I use 50+ UPF (Ultra Violet Protection Factor) fabrics and I’ve chosen the lightest and the softest fabrics with sun blocking quality without being dipped or sprayed with products. Since pickleball is the lane that I love, I wanted my collection to be colorful so they pop off the court, but I also wanted to make sportswear that you could wear on the court and then go to a lunch with your girlfriends. The sun shrugs, boleros and scarves are not only protective, they complete the looks.

Life is great, there are so many chapters that we have lived and so many more in our futures. I hope you all get your shade on, especially if it is BESO Shade.

On a last little note. My father started in his business in his garage and worked hard his entire life. He was so proud of his business and his employees—many of whom worked for decades. Dad worked until he sold his business six months before he died. He was 90. He wasn’t a wealthy man until he sold his business. His wealth was about building something, not putting it in the bank. I wanted to do something that would make my dad proud. Well this is it; I hope he is. Thanks dad, love you and thank you for giving me such a good example on how to live your life. It’s about the journey!

Thanks to the generous patronage of Maison Francis Kurkdjian, the Perfumer’s Garden at the Palace of Versailles opened its fragrant blooms to the public. A slice of the nearly 2000-acre Gardens of Versailles, Le Jardin de Parfumeur is divided into a trio of unique areas: The Garden of Curiosities (where you’ll find most of the floral essences), Under the Trees (Japanese Cherry trees that blossom from March through April), and The Secret Garden (intimate, as its name implies). The garden holds hundreds of flowering species and fragrance-making plants like rose and jasmine and “mute” or silent flowers, such as hyacinth, peony, and violet, which surprisingly, despite their distinct scents, do not produce extract used in perfumery. These fragrances require lab creation using ionones found in essential oils.

Kurkdjian and the Palace have a storied history. A Versailles’ perfumery school graduate in 1993, he later recreated MarieAntoinette’s fragrance, Sillage de la Reine. In 2003, Kurkdjian met Marc Chaya, and in 2009, the business partners launched Maison Francis Kurkdjian. After years of success, they became part of the LVMH Group, joining fragrance companies like Parfums Christian Dior, Parfums Givenchy, and Guerlain.

September, not January, always feels like the beginning of the year. It ushers in the beginning of the school year (despite being 63, I often still feel like a 12-year-old schoolgirl). September’s also our most important fashion season, and this year I love the mini skirts by Celine, Mui Mui, and Moschino—so let’s put away the floral dresses and get those legs out. I’m also loving the fabulous ‘exploded pleated’ trench coat by Alexander McQueen.

It has been a busy few months, but a few things stick out. The Freddie Mercury Auction preview was a highlight. “Look up to the Sky and See,” is the eclectic and electric auction collection from the singer from Queen, who passed in 1991. He collected Japanese kimonos, delicate teapots, and hundreds of gold disks— all for sale at Sotheby’s. There are furniture items from Garden Lodge in Earl’s Court, the house he gave to his former lover and best friend, Mary Austin. The Yamaha piano on which he wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions,” and “Somebody to Love” will be auctioned for millions. I went to the first viewing night, where we dressed up to celebrate Freddie’s life.

Last month, I worked on a charity design competition for children from the Ravenscourt School, where George Champ won best designer, and tomorrow, photographer Alison Jackson and I are giving photographic lessons to underprivileged children in Chelsea.

I gave a birthday party to the ex-head of BAFTA, Nigel Daly, at the Laboratory Collective. It was full of artists, including Yassi Mazandi, whose work is being shown at LACMA. There are so many crossovers from LA to London; you’re always welcome here! G

As Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga pulls into the parking lot of La Brea Tar Pits, she can’t help but reflect on the rich history of the museum in the middle of Los Angeles. A place she remembers going to with her mother when she was a 13-year-old teen growing up in Long Beach. The woman at the helm of La Brea Tar Pits never dreamed one day she’d be running the iconic institution, where she recalls being fascinated by the fact that mastodons, mammoths, and dire wolves once roamed the grounds thousands and thousands of years ago.

“Angelenos should be incredibly proud of having this in the middle of the city because it is the only place like it in the world,” explains Lori Bettison-Varga, the President and director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, which oversees the Tar Pits. “I think once people understand the timeframe, they can think, oh, yeah, Los Angeles was like the Serengeti, with larger animals.”

The La Brea Tar Pits, in the center of Los Angeles, is a unique natural wonder that has fascinated scientists and visitors for years. It sits on museum row along Wilshire Boulevard, next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The 13-acre facility has bragging rights to more ice age fossils than any other institution.

To this day, it remains an active paleontological research site formed around a group of tar pits where natural asphalt has seeped up from the ground for tens of thousands of years. Over time, this sticky substance served as a natural trap when animals got too close, making it a treasure trove of ancient fossils that allow scientists to piece together the puzzle of our

planet’s past.

Bettison-Varga was always fascinated by science. At one point, she assumed she’d become a marine biologist. But her career path would change after taking a world

central to the space will be more accessible through a pedestrian pathway that will wind through the once bustling hub of prehistoric life. But it isn’t just a physical facelift. The messaging around the museum will change too. There is an important climate change story to tell through the ice age fossils.

After all, the fossils not only open a window into prehistoric times, as far back as the ice age, but also provide clues to the impact of climate change on our world today. “The idea is to really showcase this one-of-a-kind location in the world to explain ecosystem change in the face of climate change,” Bettison-Varga says before adding how the community will continue to have a tremendous amount of input during the entire process. “One of the things we heard from the community is how they want to make sure that there is a usable park area where kids can play and have open space.”

For many Southern Californians, the museum holds a special place in their hearts. It brings back fond memories of going on family outings and school field trips to the museum. During the pandemic, it was closed to visitors for about a year. When they reopened, the geologist was on site to see one of the first sets of children return. “I happened to be at the museum, and an elementary school teacher came up and said how the kids were so excited, and she said, ‘I can’t tell you how meaningful it is to have our first field trip here,”’ she recalls the teacher telling her.

Bettison-Varga hopes more people will walk out of the La Brea Tar Pits and enter a career in the sciences. Because no one knows better than Bettison-Varga, the impact a day at the La Brea Tar Pits can have on a young mind.
