Testing Available through Genex

By: Mary Raether, Beef Support Coordinator

Genex currently offers testing for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH). Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding this testing:

Q. What is the procedure for AM/NH testing?

A. Contact your Genex representative or Genex Customer Service (888.333.1783) to request a testing kit that includes hair or blood cards, sample collection instructions, test submission form and a pre-printed Genex return envelope. Once you receive the kit, collect the samples as instructed, complete the forms and return these items with your payment in the envelope.

Q. How much do the tests cost? Can I charge them to my Genex account?

A. Each test is $26.00 per test per sample. Because NH and AM testing runs on different platforms, there is no savings realized by testing a sample for both. Payment in the form of a check, credit card or Farm Plan™ will be accepted. Payment must be received with your order.

Q. If I previously had AM testing done through Genex, can the same samples be used for NH?

A. Yes, as long as enough DNA matter is available on the original sample. Contact us at 800-927-2855 so we can verify with the lab that your sample will work.

Q. If I want only archived samples tested, is there a way to process my order more quickly?

A. Yes, we can save mail time. You can either request a form be emailed to you or the form can be printed from the Genex Web site. Go to www.crinet.com. Click on Genex Cooperative, Inc., and then on Beef to find the form. Once the form is completed, email it to mraether@crinet.com, or fax to Attn: Beef DNA Testing at 715.526.3219. Payment will be needed at the time of ordering, so credit card or Farm Plan will work with this method. The lab will still require approximately 10 business days to process the test, but time will be saved mailing forms.

Q. How long will it take to receive my results and how will I receive them? Do you notify the breed association of the results?

A. Once the lab has received the samples, it will take approximately 10 business days for them to complete the testing. Results can be emailed, faxed or mailed to you. The lab forwards your results to the appropriate breed association. In the near future, Genex will offer the Osteopetrosis (OS) test along with coat color, parent verification and GeneSTAR® Molecular Value Predictions™ (MVPs) through Pfizer Animal Genetics. Watch the Web site for updates. n
