Nikki Matta (Helraiser), Genetics Camp Committee Head When asked to describe herself, Nikki said that she is a curious individual that tries to explore a lot of things. She is also a dedicated person and will work hard to obtain the things she wants to achieve. Nikki is planning to use online platforms like Zoom, Discord, and Google Meet in conducting an online version of the Genetics Camp, which will include activities like seminars, quiz contest, debate, and more, much like it would in a regular Genetics Camp.

Because of the pandemic, Hannah has opted to conduct a donation drive for One Gene, One Child instead of the usual on-site hosting of activities and interacting with the children at the Hope Intervention Center. The donation drive seeks to provide the center with resources like bond paper and ink that they need for holding online and modular classes.

Hannah is an empathetic person who likes to listen to other people’s stories, although she appears shy at first glance. She

VYLH-LB Holds First Online Orientation by JUSTIN BADLIS (Crypton)

he UPLB Genetics Society continuously promotes the health and well-being of Filipino communities, as one of the pioneer organizations of the Volunteer Youth Leader for Health Philippines (VYLH-Philippines). Despite the pandemic, the organization continues its support of its advocacies in an online fashion. In line with this, the organization called upon the participation of organizations from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, to attend the VYLH-LB Orientation via Zoom this August 25, 2020, aimed to inform aspiring partners to know more about VYLH and its current advocacies. Current advocacies include Folic Acid Awareness, Preconception Health, Newborn Screening, and Rare Diseases.

Aljon loves sleeping and reading about insects. As an additional fact, his favorite movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. As the current Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health Committee Head, he plans to revitalize and increase the number of organizations affiliated with VYLH-LB, and to take part in online awareness campaigns of VYLH. With a new set of officers comes a great responsibility for each of them to guide the organization to even greater heights. Cheers to this term’s officers and cheers to GeneSoc’s continued excellence!

Former junior adviser of the UPLB Genetics Society, Prof. Jickerson P. Lado (Integrons) commenced the program with cheerful greetings on behalf of Dr. Merlyn Mendioro, the VYLH-LB adviser. Prof. Jickerson expressed his joy on how the VYLH’s advocacies are going viral in online platforms. He also reminisced the growth of VYLH, from just starting with Folic Acid Campaign (FAC), to the multiple advocacies and activities it now spearheads to promote people’s health. He ended his opening remarks by calling upon the youth to continue the advocacies for generations to come.
