The Glen Breeze

We write to you at the height of our summer preparations: hiring counselors, building a new bathroom, maintaining and upgrading our facilities, developing staff training curricula, buying new horses, collecting forms, designing creative programming, and so much more. It’s a cacophony of work driven by our year-round staff, the Board of Directors, committee members, seasonal staff, and many other volunteers that will harmoniously materialize in a month to launch the first summer of Geneva Glen’s next 100 years!
We will introduce 322 new campers and welcome back over 900 veterans to experience “The Magic of the Glen.” Our elite counselors and staff will lead us in Council Fires, overnights, storytelling, Vespers and Camp Family Fellowship, the Dirty Derby, Rendezvous, Pulling of the Sword, and the multitude of other programs and ceremonies we have cherished for one hundred years.
The Council Ring, the “heart” of camp, will come alive as we stuff over 300 campers and staff into our theatre-in-the-round set near the hallowed fire pit. We’ll meet here on the first day to introduce the people and programs. After breakfast and lunch, we’ll march across the bridge to announce the daily activities, tell stories, and sing goofy songs. On Sundays, we’ll gather in the long tradition of Council Fire to sing songs passed down from generation to generation, like “We’re on the Upward Trail,” “Peace I Ask of Thee O River,” and, of course, “Geneva, We Love You – your wonderful fragrance of pine…” These moments in the Council Ring will forge precious memories for our campers, and these are the memories that so many of the Camp Family hold dear remembering their Geneva Glen experience.
We’ve given great thought to what we want our campers to gain this summer. We’ve listened to the wisdom of Camp Family members from different generations, our year-round team, and the seasonal staff to get to the heart of “The Magic” and ensure those traditions continue. The response we received was remarkably consistent and tremendously poignant. We want our campers to live in an empathic community of love, support, and acceptance. We want them to develop leadership skills and independence, cultivate authentic friendships, practice timeless moral values, grow spiritually, be unplugged and away from screens, feel support and find their voice, and have fun!
We’ll never forget about the fun! So, campers, get ready to be silly! It’s normal at camp to walk around in costumes pretending to be ridiculous characters. We’ll dance with abandon, sing at the top of our lungs, and laugh until our bellies ache. We’ll do outrageous skits, share stories of gnomes, fairies, and elves, and bond with new and old friends during Cabin & Dorm Fellowship. We’ll ride horses, play dodgeball, shoot arrows, climb and swing at the Ropes Course, splash at the pool, and run up and down the Meadow playing games. Through all the fun, activities, and values, we know there is transformative power in bringing children into a natural, healthy environment that inspires inward growth, character development, and confidence. We hope this helps articulate “The Magic of the Glen” and gives a glimpse into what our campers will experience come June. So, whether you are a veteran camper or staff member, a long-time alum, or a brand-new first-timer, we look forward to offering the same treasured fellowship this summer that has defined our Camp Family for the past century.
We want to extend a friendly welcome to our new campers! About 322 will attend Geneva Glen for the very first time! Almost every single camper attending Seedlings & Stardust is brand-new and we cannot wait to meet you!
Not only do we get to enjoy all the new scents, but we get to watch you play, sing songs, and laugh all around camp. Juniper, the golden retriever puppy, is new to camp just like you! Her tail will wag like crazy on Check-In day when she gets to meet each one of you. Gus will make sure she does not get too excited. He loves to romp around the campers, running all around the Meadow, and his short legs are perfect because our younger campers can keep up with him. Maisie enjoys sprinting up and down the camp trails, searching for the fairies, sprites, gnomes, elves, hobbits, and all the other magical creatures and animals living around Geneva Glen. We have played with all the critters at camp, and we are all friends! Her favorite trail is the “Gnome
Trail” because you can find so many fairy and gnome homes along the way. We cannot wait for you to check it out for yourselves and see all the new homes the magical creatures have been working on throughout the year. We are so eager for you to arrive, and we know many of you are excited about camp too! With this energy also comes the feeling of being a little nervous, which is totally normal! When we first meet the counselors, they make us feel comfortable by scratching our necks, throwing sticks for us, sitting with us in the cool shade, and sometimes slipping us yummy treats. The counselors at GG are ready to meet each of you. Several of the counselors were once first-time campers at GG, so they know how you are feeling. They will have fun activities and adventures ready for you when you arrive. Plus, they will introduce you to many new friends!
Nice to meet you!
Camp is a place where you get to participate in many things that you don’t get to do at home. Juniper has been running all around camp barking question after question about what each building is used for. She says, “What do the campers do here? Where is that sweet smell coming from?” We have been showing her everything we can, even with the snow on the ground. We told her how we love watching our camper friends zooming down the Zipline, eating candy at Umlaut’s Yumporium (our candy store), catching dodgeballs in the Meadow, splashing at the pool, listening to the horses clippity clop around the barn, and hearing the joy and laughter echo around the Glen. One of our favorite places to find you is the Council Ring, where we get to see everyone at once! We love the singing, hearing stories, and having all our friends pet us. We love the scratches! We were trying to explain Jurassic Park to Juniper, and she cannot wait to see it in action. This is one of the campers’ and staff’s favorite evening plays. Counselors turn into dinosaurs while the campers are trying their best not to be captured by the silly dinosaurs. It is a delightful sight! You are in for a real treat if you are new to camp. Just like Juniper, you will experience all the joys that Geneva Glen has to offer. We are thrilled to meet you, and we will try our best not to give you too many sloppy doggy kisses.
Some very silly dinos!
Each year we gratefully welcome back outstanding leaders from past summers. For this savory stew, the returning counselors and leaders are the meat, vegetables, and everything else mixed in to make this sumptuous dish. Together, they are the ingredients that continue to create the “Magic of the Glen.”
We present to you the returning 2023 Staff Stew!
First, we will add one pound of beef stewing meat from Colin Yakely and Zoe Halax as our Head of Hills. We need two cabbage heads for flavor and to lead our new counselors – Lucy Grylicki and Ryan Porter our Heads of Counselor Development. Next, we need some bones from our Crew Bosses, Sally Johnson, Noah Schwalger, and Cole Alsup to enrich the taste and ensure camp is clean and safe. A good old peeled and cut red onion adds sustenance like our Trainee leaders, Grace Romero and Chewy LeBlanc. Some broccoli rosettes bring vibrant color to the dish just like our former Crew members now turned counselors: Ian Jenkins, Sam Wenig, Sam Kanewske, Davis Hummel, Cooper Lees, Lauren Schulman, Ella Nichols, Addie Moore, Abby Romero, Sophia Lisle, and Evie Vogt. Add two cups of broth to increase the stew’s volume with Michael Tidd and Avery Hudson as our Heads of Pool. Peas and green beans are a must on the list, adding creativity and talent like Emory Gerlach and Jules Archuleta will do running Crafts this summer. You need 3 tablespoons of vinegar: Matthew Peters, Head of American Heritage Tracks, Seamus Cassidy, Head of WILD, and Nate Cunningham will fit the bill. A few mushrooms add a unique blend with Ben Malek, Head of Archery, Weston Schwartz, Head of Shields, and Quinn Sweeney, Head of Media. Three carrots, peeled and cut into ¼-inch rounds enhance so much for our program just like Tanner Thomas, Head of Trips & Overnights, Zach Triplett, Program Coordinator, and Jack Prall, Head of Ropes. A ripe tomato is good in a stew – Orson Lankford will be running the popular area of G-Smash again. Celery will improve the stew’s crunch with Tag Lees, Head of Rifles & BBs, and Luca Maffoni, Head of Teen Leadership. A dash of horsemint herb will add a perfect blend just like the trio, Izzi Bryson, Rob Jacoby, and Drew Birdsong, taking care of our herd at the barn. Penne pasta always adds an extra flair in the same way as Ainsley Dodson, Head of Special Events, does at camp. Throw some garlic cloves into the vat with Cassie Dugdale, Head of Sports, and Molly Grylicki, Head of Bracelets. A pomegranate is said to bring good luck, so why not throw it in the pot with Connor Triplett, Head of Ropes, and Ella Jiron, Head of Drama. Adding a few root veggies like rutabagas, potatoes, and turnips keep the stew grounded just like Avery Lankford, Head of Alchemy, Miles Dwyer, Head of Vespers, and Riley Estes, Head of Store. One of the last steps is mixing in all the spices like bay leaves, rosemary, thyme, parsley, and sage. This will come from our year-round staff: Pete Mahan, Grace Campbell, Cas Robison, Nick “Kolo” Kolomitz, Mackenzie DeMoor, Kathy Thornton, and Anne Baalman. Finally, add the salt and freshly ground pepper to make the perfect blend to top it off with Christa Redford and Reid McKnight. Let it all simmer to a delectable taste, and the Staff Stew will be ready just in time for you this summer!
Cas Robison is GG’s newest additon to the year-round team. Cas began his role as Geneva Glen’s Operations Director in the Spring of 2023 and is excited to help Geneva Glen run smoothly. He is greatly looking forward to all the fun this summer!
Mackenzie DeMoor is our new Health & Wellness Coordinator! She started at GG as a “Chiquita Banana” at Myths & Magic and never looked back! Mackenzie began helping with Geneva Glen’s medical team in 2020, and is so excited to help make camp a safe and healthy place for everyone!

“Last summer, an impromptu talent show broke out where campers took turns standing and presenting various acts like magic tricks, comedy acts, solo singing, gymnastics, and many other talents to a cheering and encouraging audience. We witnessed dozens of campers wanting to express and share their genuine selves in a supportive and nurturing environment. It’s incredible how one simple moment can change a camper’s life and give them courage.”
-GG Staff MemberGeneva Glen’s transformative experience is made possible by our generous Camp Family! These gifts from 2022 impacted today’s campers and laid the foundation for the next 100 years of the Magic of Glen. Every donation is valuable to us, no matter how big or small, and we hope you will continue to consider Geneva Glen for your kindness and generosity. Our volunteers have served as the backbone of our traditions and spirit throughout Geneva Glen's history. Thousands of friends and alums have served our camp as board members, program volunteers, ambassadors, and helpers. We present the annual "Magic of the Glen" award to show gratitude for these volunteers' outstanding service. These individuals go above and beyond in leading our volunteer effort through their love of camp. Congratulations to our 2022 Magic of the Glen award recipient, Sara Hazel! Her work in helping form and develop our 100th Anniversary Celebration and the Meadow Time Soirée was indispensable. The year's success is significantly due to her wisdom, creativity, and hard work. Thank you, Sara!
We are tremendously grateful to all who donated their time to GG last year! In addition to the volunteers listed below, we want to thank our board members, committees, and the Round Table! Not to mention our year-round staff, who worked and organized many of these volunteer projects. Thank you to our incredible 2022 Volunteers!

The final design will have 2 large common-space type bathrooms which are able to be separated from each other; one side with 4 urinals and 4 toilet stalls, the other with 6 toilet stalls. The bathroom building also features 2 private toilet rooms accessed individually from the exterior on the west side of the building. The building will feature a total of 9 interior sinks and has been designed to allow for some future upgrades and improvements including the addition of a tooth-brushing and handwashing trough on the exterior.
The GG3 mitigation project is moving forward with the assistance of Jefferson Conservation District foresters. This winter we secured additional grant money for the project and have begun cutting in the approximately 50-acre section. The project area is to the north of The Outlook and GG2 area, and extends into The Saddle, Backdoor Trail and towards the west side of Mt. Winnie. We’re optimistic that once this dense forest is opened up, we will discover cool new spaces and uses for the area. We are also looking forward to the reduced risks and impact of wildfire.
We have been discussing program needs and potential uses to ensure renovations to the CRC (or Costume Room) building meet our present and future needs. We are exploring drainage around the building and assessing the impact on how we may be able to develop or expand use of the building during the remodel. The creek-bed is in close proximity and likely was a contributor to some of the issues the building is experiencing. We’re excited to preserve this historic building and renovate it to meet our future needs.
This winter the kitchen got a little bit of long-needed TLC. The walls and ceiling were given a fresh coat of paint, the floor was patched and refinished, appliances were moved out and given a deep-cleaning, and some long-needed plumbing repairs were made. Special thanks to all the Pendragons who came in February to help move everything out into the dining hall, and then move everything back in March!
We completed roofing and gutter repairs on the Health Center, chapel, and Cabin 8. Cabins 1,2,4,6, and 10, as well as the carport, received new standing-seam metal roofing, gutter replacements and gutter guards. The metal roofing is expected to last longer and help shed snow more efficiently and provide increased resistance to threat from wildfire. We’re excited to be about halfway through our list of well-deserved roofing upgrades to camp buildings and look forward to being able to tackle more in the fall.
In the fall of 2022, Logan MacNair of Troop 633 completed his Eagle Scout service project. Logan and the volunteers he organized built 16 bird houses for 4 different species of birds at Geneva Glen using salvaged lumber from the barn construction project. We are grateful to the troop and Phil Triplett, the Eagle Coordinator at Troop 633, for helping to send candidates our way. If you are interested in completing a special service or volunteer project at camp, contact Pete: pete@genevaglen.org.
We completed and submitted the Preliminary Engineering Report for our new wastewater plant to the state. It’s an exciting step in turning the long-theoretical designs and conversation into reality. We’re tentatively planning on construction beginning during the 2023-2024 off-season and would see the new treatment plan coming online by the end of summer 2025.
Many thanks to the Camp Family members who attended the Annual Round Table Meeting on April 8th! We shared highlights from 2022, Christa and Reid told the “fairytale story” of the 100th Anniversary, and we relayed the most up-to-date financial, facility, property, and committee updates. Most importantly, we asked for advice from our Round Table stakeholders regarding legacy programming, the 100th Anniversary, capital upgrades, land stewardship, long-term financial sustainability, and future hopes for our campers. The feedback we received was remarkable and demonstrated the thoughtfulness and devotion of the Camp Family.
We’re thrilled to introduce three incoming alums to our Board of Directors: Latrice Lee-McInerney, Sandi Pahlke, and Michael Hazel. In addition to their extensive Geneva Glen backgrounds, they bring valuable real-world experience to help guide Geneva Glen into our next 100 years. We look forward to working with you!
We offer profound thanks to our outgoing Board Members, Stephanie Kiley, and Daniel Goldhamer. For their many years of service, we’re proud to honor each of them with a Centennial Brick to live near the Council Ring. Thank you, and you’ll be missed!

Jan Rhodes Moor reflected the “Spirit of Glen” for 7 decades. Her camper years began in 1953, Queen in 1957, counselor years through 1964, and on to alumni Fossil Fame. For Jan, her heart will always "lie beneath the aspen tree."
Ron’s time at Geneva Glen covered many positions from camper to dish crew member, counselor, parent, Board of Directors, and alum. He was engaged in so many parts of the camp experience. He was a quiet leader who was always ready to serve others, whether it was helping a cabin put together a skit for the Council Ring or helping with the everyday tasks to keep things running smoothly. He loved music and bringing people together. Many of the stories he told were about Council Ring songs and the people who would sing with him. He always loved bringing along his guitar just in case the opportunity arose. Ron enjoyed preserving the history and traditions of the camp. He wanted the next generation to be able to share a similar experience as he and his colleagues had witnessed. He was very proud of the Knighthood program, and the values that it teaches. He was a Gold Star and had a Silver Spur. He always supported his son, Tom, through the stages of Knighthood and was present for each promotion. Some of Ron’s favorite memories are of the friends he made at camp. He truly belonged to Geneva Glen.
